Out Of Reach (2)

3rd Person POV

January 16, 2XXX

"Why the hell is this light bill so much?" For the past few weeks, Y/N had been going through hell. Due to his lack of income, Y/N had missed his cousin's wedding, he was met with multiple bills, and he was also faced with an eviction notice. It had seemed like getting a job around his area was nearly impossible. "So... damn it! Why is it always me?" Y/N formed his hand into a fist and raised it above the table before sighing and putting his hand down gently. Getting angry wasn't going to help him pay all of this off. If only he had stayed awake during work! If only he hadn't used those damn pills! If only... he hadn't fallen in love with Ruby.

Another sigh escaped Y/N's lips as he thought about the redhead. Truly, most of this situation was his fault. If he didn't tell Ruby how he felt, he wouldn't be in such a damn mess. He wouldn't have to pay all of these damn bills. He most certainly wouldn't be getting an eviction notice. "I was right to calm myself a dumbass." Just before he could slam his head on the table, Y/N heard the sound of light knocking. Slowly, he rose up from his seat and walked towards the door, opening it to see his neighbor Quentin. "Hey, uh... you mind keeping it down a bit Y/N? It's just that... you okay?"

"Yeah I... I'm fine. Just... dealing with stress."
"You... wanna talk about it? I mean, I could try to help."
"Really? Help me with bills and rent?"
"..."
"Sorry, I... I didn't mean to sound like an ass. Recently I got fired and everything is kind of... screwed."
"Well if you needed help with a job, why didn't you just ask me?"
"I... didn't want to bother anyone."
"That's kind of weird and dumb."
"Hence why I call myself a dumbass..."
"Anyways, if you'd like I can help you get a job at where I work."
"And that is?"

"Joey's." Quentin answered with a chuckle.

"Joey's? The bar on Seventh?"
"That's the one. Come on man, it pays well and you get the benefit of watching people fail at singing."
"...Honestly, I'll take whatever help I can get. I'll make sure to check it out."
"Nice. I just know you'll get the job. You seem like a nice guy."

As Quentin walked back to his door, Y/N, for the first time in a while, smiled briefly. If this was a gift from the heavens, then he would certainly take it. Shutting the door, Y/N turned around and threw his fist into the air "YES!" He then covered his mouth, remembering that there was other people in the apartment building. "I mean... yes."

"I guess Sean wasn't lying when he called me an old man." A small chuckle escaped Y/N's lips as he cleaned another used glass. When Y/N first came to Joey's, he hadn't expected to see something right out of a classic movie. It was as if the mob themselves ran this bar. It was just that great looking. "Alright ladies and gentlemen, tonight is gonna be quite different. Tonight... we have a classy little lady by the name of Jessica Elsely. Take it away Jess." Y/N's curiosity got the better of him as he looked over at the stage. Quentin, who had just came back from the bathroom, walked up beside him and whistled lightly. Jessica had long, curly black hair which went down to the center of her back. Her eyes were a piercing crimson. Her figure was also that of a model, and her scarlet dress had shed light on her more... perfect parts.

As the lights went on her, Jessica let out a small smirk. And thus, the song began.

You had plenty money 1922... You let other women make a fool of you... Why don't you do right, like some other men do?

Get out of here and get me some money too?

You're sitting there wondering what it's all about... You ain't got no money, they will put you out...

Why don't you do right, like some other men do?

Get out of here and get me some money too?

If you had prepared 20 years ago... You wouldn't be a-wanderin' out from door to door...

Why don't you do right, like some other men do?

Get out of here and get me some money too...

I fell for your jivin' and I took you in... Now all you got to offer me's a drink of gin...
Why don't you do right, like some other men do?

Get out of here and get me some money too

Why don't you do right, like some other men do?

Like some other men do...

As the song ended, everyone stood up and cheered, while some people even threw roses on stage. "Now that beauty right there... she knows how to sing." In that brief instant, something in Y/N... moved. "Quentin, I'll be right back." Y/N then hopped over the counter and ran up to the stage. "Oh? What's this? It looks like Jessica here inspired one of our bartenders." The crowd chuckled, but began to clap for Y/N. Jessica, who was returning to her seat, winked and smiled at him. "Alright Y/N, show us what you're made of!" Quentin called out. Y/N, smiling, began to select a song. It took awhile for Y/N to decide... but he finally picked a song that was for him.

"Alright, here goes nothing." Once again, the lights focused all on Y/N... and the next song began.

Each place I go only the lonely go... Some little small cafe... The songs I know only the lonely know...

Each melody recalls a love that used to be...

The dreams I dream only the lonely dream... Of lips as warm as May... That hopeless scheme only the lonely scheme...

That soon somewhere you'll find the one that used to care...

And you recall each fun time... Those picnics at the beach when love was new...  It well could be the one time... A hopeless little dream like that comes true...

If you find love hang on to each caress... And never let love go... For when it's gone you'll know the loneliness... The heartbreak only the lonely know...

For a brief moment, everything went silent. The crowd, including Quentin, looked at him with wide eyes... before cheering for the new bartender.

"I swear, I will never understand why people put things in the wrong spot. Seriously, who put this loaf of bread in the body wash aisle?" An irritated sigh escaped Y/N lips as he picked up the lone loaf of bread. This was the fifth time he had seen something like this. The first time was when he saw a bar of soap sitting by a gallon of milk. The second time was when he saw butter in the meats section. After that he saw a bag of chips sitting right on top of the bananas and fourth time he saw something that didn't even belong in the grocery store. It was something rather... unsanitary and by the looks of it, it looked used. If it weren't that type of object... maybe it would have fit right in with the zucchinis.

"I swear this bread better not taste like-"

"Y/N?" Suddenly, Y/N felt his body freeze up at the sound of the familiar voice. "I... I haven't seen you in so long." Slowly, Y/N turned his head to see his former boss, Ruby, looking at him with her head tilted. In her cart were certain things he figured she would eat. Strawberries, cookies, bananas, ice cream, eggs, bread, milk, a zu...cchini? "Oh... hey bos... I mean, Ruby. How... How are you?" If Y/N were being honest, it was weird to see Ruby outside of her normal suit, skirt, and tie. In fact, it was both weird... and heartbreaking seeing her in front of him. "I'm doing well. You?"

"F...Fine. A few months ago I got a job at Joey's."
"The bar on Seventh?"
"That's the one. It... It's pretty nice honestly. The atmosphere feels... right to me." Y/N's eyes slowly moved away from Ruby at the last part of the sentence.
"Thats... good. I'm... I'm glad you found somewhere that's cozy."
"...I'm sorry, I believe I need to go."
"Wait I-"
"Ruby, there you are!"

For a split second, Ruby turned around with wide eyes. "J-Jaune? I thought you were still out with Ren!" Ruby then turned back around to see... nobody. It had appeared that with the short amount of time Jaune gave him, Y/N was gone in an instant. "Well he had to leave early to tend to Nora. When you told me that you were going shopping I didn't want to wait too long at home so I came to you." Jaune then hugged her up from behind, squeezing her a bit too tight. "So, who were you talking too?"

"It... was just one of my workers. I saw hi... her and talked to her before she had to leave."
"Sorry that I ruined your girl talk. Well, you ready?"
"No, I still need to get some meat."
"Oh trust me... you will."

A/N: That's right, there is gonna be a third part! And I'm gonna have to start on it very soon since I will be moving soon. Gonna let this sit though. Part 3 will have more development between Y/N, Ruby, and Jaune. Oh and here are the songs in case you were curious.
