Chapter 60: Known by its Song
A/N: While Qrow is out looking for Huntsmen, Yang has a chat with her mother.
Rain was heard pouring outside as Qrow opened up a sliding door leading into a small restaurant. A man was seen sleeping at a table in the corner, while the Ramen Shop Owner stood behind the counter sharpening his kitchen knife on a wood block. Qrow walked up to the owner, who was still paying attention to sharpening his knife.
Ramen Shop Owner: Regular? Or the Special?
Qrow: I'm actually looking for someone, goes by the name Shiro Wan. Ever heard of him? I heard he's a regular around here.
Ramen Shop Owner: Who's asking?
Qrow: Hey, I'm not some cop if that's what you mean. I need Shiro for a gig. We go way back.
Ramen Shop Owner: Way back, huh?
He asked while looking up at Qrow.
Ramen Shop Owner: So, he's a friend of yours.
Qrow rubbed his chin in response to the question.
Qrow: Hm, yeah, I'd say so. He's a pretty alright guy.
Ramen Shop Owner: Well, in that case...
His tone then turned hostile, pointing his knife threateningly at Qrow.
Ramen Shop Owner: You tell that jerk that he better not show his ugly face in here until he pays me the Lien he owes me!!
Qrow: Uh, did I say friend? I, uh ....I meant acquaintance.
He said as he backed away a bit, nervously and the owner angrily slammed his knife into the counter.
Qrow: Really, we're just colleagues! Anyways, thanks for your time, buddy. I'll just be taking off now.
Qrow exited the restaurant, quickly closing the sliding door. He quickly turned around, leaned against the door. He took a drink from his flask before pulling out his scroll, which had a list of "CONTACTS". One of which, he had to cross off.
Qrow let out a sigh.
Qrow: Great start.
Suddenly, the owner's knife was stabbed through the door cloth, barely missing Qrow's head. Time would go on as Qrow walked up to several people asking if they knew any of the Huntsmen on his list; first, a pair of two men standing on the rainy street. Next, to a one-eyed, blonde blacksmith selling her wares. Then, he seeked the help of a beat-up man filled with bruises, resting while two other men are currently fighting in a match. After every person he asked, Qrow's expression and body language grew more aggravated, and each time, the number of Huntsmen he crossed off the list increased.
Finally, he walked up to a small house with boarded-up windows. He looked at his Scroll for his two remaining contacts, the first of which had been crossed out. Now, only one was left.
Qrow: Heather Shields.
He knocked on the door. A group of small children were seen near the house. After Qrow turned around from looking at them, since there's been no response, he banged it loudly with the side of his fist. As he was about to bang on the door again, a man opened up the door.
Qrow: Oh, uh, hey there. I'm looking for Heather?
The man just stared back at him.
Qrow: Look, pal, I've had a rough day. Do you know where she is or not?
Small Girl: Daddy?
She said as she walked up next to her father.
Small Girl: Does he know where Mommy is?
Having realized that Heather was missing in action, or worse, Qrow immediately regretted his mistake.
Qrow: I um ...I'm sorry to bother you.
The man and his daughter went back into their house. Qrow walked back out into the rain. He removed his flask from his shirt and considered taking another drink from it, but decided not to. At the park, he looked up at the Mistral Bounty mission boards. Some had things like village security, others were in progress weeks ago, and some were terminated. After looking at the boards, Qrow crossed off the following names on his Scroll. He then checked for more names on the mission board one last time. Some on search and rescue, search and destroy, in progress or terminated. Qrow sighed and took a seat on a nearby bench, realizing that all of his contacts, let alone many others on the mission board, were nowhere to be found. After a while, Qrow went back into the restaurant from earlier. The owner had more wood carvings on his counter now. He noticed Qrow walk in.
Ramen Shop Owner: You've got a lot of nerve showing up back here, unless you've brought that idiot with you.
Qrow: How much did Shiro owe you?
The owner noticed Qrow's somber expression.
Ramen Shop Owner: Well, I'd say about ...16,000 Lien.
Qrow then tossed a Lien note, which clattered softly on the surface of the bar.
Ramen Shop Owner: Wait, what? Man, you must be in some serious trouble with him if you're paying me off.
Qrow: His name is clear.
The owner frowned.
Ramen Shop Owner: Yeah.
Qrow started to leave again, and the owner returned to his carving.
Ramen Shop Owner: That idiot...
Qrow: Yeah...
He said before opening the door and leaving. At the Branwen Tribe camp, Vernal poured cups of tea for Raven, Yang and Weiss. They were all inside Raven's tent with the latter three seated around a table.
Raven: You can wait outside. Thank you.
She said to Vernal, who did so.
Yang: So, what's the "truth"?
Raven: First, I want to ask you if you didn't bring the Arcosain with you.
Yang: What?
Raven: Your little friend there threatened Vernal by saying that she knew an Arcosain. The same one that you were with at Beacon to be exact.
Yang: (Y/N)?
Raven: If you lead him here, I won't hesitate on taking certain actions.
Yang: I don't even known where (Y/N) is and he probably doesn't know where I am. Even if he did, he would've found me by now and possibly level this whole camp.
Raven: Hmph! You better hope that your words are true. I already have enough to deal with. I don't need an Arcosain as well.
Yang was getting a bit frustrated.
Yang: What's. The. Truth?
She asked in a tone where she sounded like she wanted to tear Raven's arms off.
Raven: You know, it's better when it's hot.
She said after taking a sip from her cup.
Weiss: You know, you're really obnoxious.
Raven: The truth is that "truth" is hard to come by. A story of victory for one person is a story of defeat for someone else. By now, your uncle has surely told Ruby and her friends plenty of stories.
Yang: Well, he's never given me a reason to doubt him before.
Raven: That doesn't mean those reasons don't exist. You know, you and your teammates might as well be the poster children for the Huntsman academies. Your motives vary, but you all enrolled to try and make the world a better place. It's adorable.
Yang: It's what Huntsmen and Huntresses do.
Raven: Not all of them. Some people are just in it for the money and the fame, but there's even more that are just looking to grow stronger. Your Uncle Qrow and I didn't attend Beacon to become Huntsmen, we did it to learn how to kill Huntsmen.
Yang and Weiss gasped at this, exchanging a brief look with each other.
Raven: Daddy and Uncle left that part out, hm? Aside from the Grimm, Huntsmen were the only ones capable of ruining our raids and hunting us down. Our tribe needed a counterforce. And Qrow and I were the perfect age.
She stood up.
Raven: The entrance exams were child's play compared to what we'd already been through. We were good. So good, that we caught the attention of Beacon's very own headmaster, Professor Ozpin. Even after we were put on a team, I could tell he was keeping his eye on us. Back then, I thought it was because he knew, but it was Team STRQ he was interested in.
Yang: What do you mean by that?
Raven: Constant attention, extra training missions, turning a blind eye whenever we happened to break the rules and get into more trouble than we should've. Sound familiar?
Yang and Weiss shared another glance at each other. Weiss gestured Yang to keep going.
Yang: What's your point?
Raven: How much do you know about Professor Ozpin? About his past?
Weiss: He was .. a prodigy. One of the youngest headmasters to be appointed to a school.
Raven: Because that's how he planned it. Because the man you know as Ozpin designed those schools and has followers inside every academy on Remnant that are loyal to him and no one else.
Yang: That doesn't make any sense! How could he have...? No. Why would someone even do that?
Raven: Because old man Oz has a great and terrible secret. One that could spread fear across the world. One that he eventually entrusted to our team, and once I knew, there was no going back. I needed to know more, but with every new discovery I made, the more horrifying the world became.
Yang: Okay, then tell us. What's the big secret? What's so crazy that the rest of us don't know?
Raven: The Creatures of Grimm ...have a master named Salem. She can't be stopped, she can't be reasoned with, and she will not rest until humanity crumbles at her feet. She's arguably an even worse threat than Frieza and his rouges were.
As she spoke, Weiss and Yang's eyes widened more and more as they sat in silence.
Weiss: What?
Raven: You know, you two haven't even touched your tea.
Raven took another sip from her teacup, while Yang stood up.
Yang: Why should we believe any of this?
Raven: Now you're catching on. So far you've done nothing but accept what others tell you,
She put her cup down.
Raven: but you need to question everything.
The two stared at each other face to face, before Raven turned around.
Raven: Otherwise you'll end up just as blind as Qrow...
Yang gritted her teeth, and her eyes narrowed, seething.
Raven: ...and your fool of a father.
Yang fired a shot from Ember Celica, destroying the table. Raven's empty teacup clatters across the floor, stopping when it hits the heel of her boot. Raven looks toward Yang, faintly smiling. Yang's eyes have turned red.
Yang: Don't you dare talk about my family like that!
While Yang spoke, Weiss stared up at her wide-eyed and flinched when she raised her voice for emphasis. A weapon was heard being drawn at Yang.
Vernal: You need to calm down.
Weiss held Yang's hand.
Weiss: Yang, please.
Raven: Listen to your friend, Yang. Your teammates never let you down before.
Yang: You don't know the first thing about my teammates! About me! You were never there! You LEFT US!!
Her eyes then turned back to normal.
Yang: Why?!
She hung her head in sadness.
Raven: I know more than you realize. Not just about you, and not just what I've been told, but things I've seen with my own eyes. I know the Grimm have a leader, I know people who can come back from the dead, I know that magic is real, and I can prove it.
Weiss stood up, while Raven continued addressing her daughter.
Raven: You said Tai told you all about my Semblance.
Vernal lowered her weapon while Raven headed toward the back exit of her tent.
Raven: Well, I doubt he ever told you what Oz did to my brother and me.
As Raven exited her tent, Yang and Weiss exchanged confused looks.
Vernal: Go see for yourself.
Vernal left. Yang and Weiss took her advice and exit the tent. They saw no one there.
Yang: Mom?
Weiss: Yang, are you okay?
Yang: I'll be fine once we can get her to take us to Ruby.
Weiss relented while Yang continued to look around.
Weiss: It's okay if... you're not okay.
Yang: You didn't believe what she said, right?
Weiss: I ...of course not. Well, not all of it. It was crazy. We have Dust, Semblances ...But, I mean, there's no such thing as magic.
Just then, the two heard a bird caw. They watched it fly in front of them.
Weiss: A raven?
Yang: I've ...seen that bird before.
Weiss: Maybe it belongs to your mom?
The two continued to watch the raven fly in the dusk-colored sky. It descended, flying and weaving between the trees, before shapeshifting into Raven herself. Raven landed back on the ground on her feet, while Yang and Weiss had shocked expressions as she stood back up.
Yang: How ...did you do that?
Raven: Well, I could explain it to you...
Raven then draws her sword, slashing behind her, creating a portal with her Semblance.
Raven: ...or you could ask your uncle.
Yang: You're letting us go?
Raven: I'm giving you a choice.
She sheathed her sword.
Raven: Stay here, with me, and I'll answer all your questions and more. We can have a fresh start.
Yang glared at her.
Raven: Or...
She stepped to the side of her portal.
Raven: you can go back to Qrow and join Ozpin's impossible war against Salem, and meet the same fate as so many others. But can you really go back to trusting someone that's kept so much from you?
Weiss reacted timidly, while Yang just glared at her mother.
Yang: All I care about is making sure my sister is safe.
Raven: Ugh...
Was all Raven gave in Dissatisfaction as Yang and Weiss rode on Bumblebee. However, before they could enter the portal, Raven addressed her daughter one more time.
Raven: Yang. If you side with your uncle, I may not be as kind the next time we meet...
Weiss rolled her eyes and looked ahead.
Yang: You weren't kind this time either.
Yang and Weiss proceeded through the portal on Bumblebee. The portal then disappeared.
Raven: I know...
Back in Mistral, Qrow was leaning against a stone railing.
Qrow: This isn't right. I get one or two of them, but ...all of them?
Qrow sighed and hung his head in disappointment. Suddenly, he heard the sound of Raven's portal behind him.
Qrow: Raven?
The sound of a motorcycle was heard coming from the portal, much to Qrow's surprise.
Qrow: Oh.
Back at the house Team RNJR was staying at, each of the members was helping prepare dinner: Ruby and Ren were cooking at the stove, Jaune was setting up the table, and Nora was cutting carrots, occasionally eating slices.
Ren: Alright, the first batch is just about done.
Ruby: Awesome! Now we just need Qrow and we'll be all set.
Nora was still eating carrots.
Nora: Do you really think he's gonna bring that many people? This is a lot of food.
Ruby: Uh, I don't know, but it sounds like we could use all the help we can get.
Qrow: I'm back!
Ruby: Be right there!
Ren: You're going to overcook that.
He said to Ruby.
Ruby: No I'm not, shut up!
Qrow: Hey, uh, Ruby?
Ruby: I'm coming!
Some smoke came from the pan Ruby is cooking with.
Ruby: Fine! You take over.
Ruby grabbed the tea tray and headed to the living room while Ren helped cook the pan.
Ruby: So, we didn't know how many people were coming, so we just cooked all of it.
She said while looking at the tea try. However, when she looked up, she gasped as she dropped the tea tray and its contents, which shatter on the floor. She stared in disbelief at the sight of not only Qrow, but of her older sister Yang and teammate Weiss. Yang approached her little sister.
Ruby: Yang, I ...I'm so sorry! I .......I should've stayed, and I should've talked to you more! I'd ......I just...
Tears start pouring from her eyes as she continued.
Ruby: I wasn't sure if you wanted me around and.....
Suddenly, her big sister gave her a strong hug. Ruby's lips quivered, and she looked toward her sister.
Yang: I love you.
She said as tears streamed from her eyes. Ruby sobbed as she leaned into her sister's hug.
Ruby: I love you too.
Jaune, Ren and Nora entered the room, smiling at the sight of the two sisters embracing each other. Qrow smiled as well. Oscar entered the room.
Oscar: Uh...
He looked up, seeing Ruby and Yang hugging, and smiled. Weiss smiled as she wiped a tear from her eye, before frowning while looking down.
Ruby: Weiss.
Weiss looked up, and saw the two sisters open their arms up for her. She smiled and eagerly joined them in their hug. Everyone smiled as they watch three of the four Team RWBY members embrace each other.
(Meanwhile).
Within in Salem's domain, Cinder was sleeping within her room, but she was having a nightmare. At first, it was just a darkened plane with only voices being heard. All of them that sounded familiar to her. One sounded like her from a younger age.
Kid Cinder: Daddy:.... N....... No.
The image of a small girl crying was shown crying over her father, who was bleeding out from his wound.
Cinder's Father: C ........Cinder, you must stay strong no matter what ......even through your worst of times, you must stay strong.......
She wasn't able to hear the rest of what her father said as it felt like his voice was fading in and out through the dream. Her father had eventually fell silent and stopped breathing.
Kid Cinder: Daddy? Daddy?!
Cinder had eventually woke up and gasped and breathed heavily as she looked around her room.
Cinder: Why ......Why that damn dream?
She said as she still panted while placing her hand over her head.
A/N: Since the show hasn't done it yet, I'll take the liberty of doing Cinder's backstory.
