Chapter 31: Round One
A/N: Team RWBY takes on their first challengers in the tournament.
Ruby was standing infront of her mother's grave.
Ruby: Hey, mom. Sorry I haven't come by in a while. Things have been ...well, things have been, pretty busy. Oh, Dad's here, too! He's, uh, you know ...Dad. He's still teaching at Signal. But he told me that he's going to be on some mission soon. I think he misses adventuring with you. I miss you too. Haven't gotten kicked out of Beacon yet! So that's cool. I think being on a team with Yang helps. Keep her in line ...That was a joke. She's actually a really great fighter! You can tell she's learned a lot from Dad! Oh, so are Weiss and Blake. Oh! They're my teammates! Together, we form Team RWBY! And yes, before you ask, that does cause a lot of confusion. Anyways, I made a bunch of new friends, and then I met some ...let's just say, uh, odd teachers. Oh! We've also stopped some bad guys, too! I guess it's like they say: "like mother, like daughter"! I still wonder why Ozpin let me into the school early. But uh, I guess he'll tell me one day. You know how he is. It's funny, the more I get to know him, the more he's starting to sound like Uncle Qrow.
She looked over to see Zwei and her dad, Taiyang Xiao Long.
Ruby: Oh! Looks like Dad's back! I gotta go! He's dropping me off at Beacon for the tournament match before he goes on his next mission. Wish me luck! It was good to talk.
Ruby then lowered her hood and headed over to her and Zwei barked as she approached.
(Timeskip).
At the tournament stadium, crowds were cheering in the stands, visitors from all over the world. In a field of volcanic earth and icy glaciers below, Ruby fired and swung Crescent Rose at her opponent as Blake exchanged blows with her weapon, the blades of her Gambol Shroud colliding with the hoverboard of her opponent until she flipped away, readied herself, and charged in again. Behind her, Weiss waved Myrtenaster against her opponent, and finally Yang dodged the explosive force of Arslan Altan's fist before returning fire with her own Ember Celica. You weren't in the ring since it was a 4 on 4 match and they had to make things fair. Plus, you had already gotten through a match earlier.
(Flashback).
https://youtu.be/o0bQdpTkLTc
You were fighting a Reptile-type Faunus. You were clearly holding back your strength and power, but even then, the Bearded Dragon Faunus was pretty touch and even fast in his own right. He was able to get some hits on you, But that didn't mean that he was beating you. It just meant that you both were able to go toe to toe with each other. Not to mention that the spikes on his body were a bit of a issue to deal with given how sharp they were.
(Y/N): Not bad. Rather impressive actually. As if the spikes weren't enough of an issue, you're pretty quick on your feet as well.
Bearded Dragon Faunus: Getting worried that I'm gonna take you out.
(Y/N): Not really. I'm just more surprised this match managed to last this long. Had a feeling it was gonna end a lot sooner.
Bearded Dragon Faunus: Don't worry, it's about to be over soon enough!
(Y/N): Couldn't agree more!
You said as you threw a punch at him, only for him to quickly dodge it and landing some quick punches to your chest before kicking you back a few feet away.
(Y/N)'s mind: Damn, this guys a bit of trouble. It's hard to land a hit correctly when he's running that fast. Not to mention his whole body has those spikes.
You soon took notice that there was no spikes in the front part of his body. Much like how there isn't any on a Bearded Dragon's underbelly.
(Y/N)'s mind: Bingo! I've found the weak spot! All I just gotta do be able to stop him so I can land a hit.
As the Faunus was charging at you, you looked down to his legs and thought you could try and make him lose his footing. Once he was close enough to throw a punch at you, you used your tail to trip up his foot and caused him to stagger.
Bearded Dragon Faunus: Huh?!
You took this to your advantage and landed a punch onto the Bearded Dragon Faunus' stomach. He gasped in pain for a moment before he was soon flung off of the ring by a swat of your tail. High above the action, two familiar teachers were sitting at a sportscaster's desk, with a microphone between them and the holographic image of the four kingdoms' symbols united as one. It was Port and Oobleck.
Oobleck: And (Y/N) is the winner!
The crowed cheered.
(Y/N): Who needs to blast an enemy off the ring when you can just use a simple tail swipe to do it?
(End of Flashback).
Port: Hello! It seems that we have another astonishing bout ahead of us! Wouldn't you agree, Professor?
Oobleck: Doctor.
He said in an annoyed tone. But soon brightened up excitedly again.
Oobleck: And yes Peter, I think it's safe to say this match may be the closest we've seen of the four-on-four round of the tournament!
Port: For those of you just now joining us, welcome to the Vytal Festival Tournament, broadcast live from the Amity Colosseum!
He waved his arm to gesture at the entire event from his place on the gigantic screen over the crowds. The Coliseum was shown in it's full glory, as shuttle craft transport people to and from the various floors while the entire structure hovered around the airspace of Beacon Academy. Explosions were seen throughout the battlefield, but the view shifts back to the announcers as they begin speaking again.
Port: If this is your first time watching, allow us to break down the rules.
Oobleck held up the appropriate number of fingers for each of his explanations as a hologram to his side illustrated the rules.
Oobleck: Aside from the rounds given to (Y/N), The tournament is divided into three distinctive rounds; teams, doubles, and singles. Age and school year are irrelevant! In this tournament, your only attribute being tested ...is skill.
Port: Correct! The winners of this battle will elect two of their members to represent them in the doubles round, followed by the winners of that round choosing one member to advance once again. The remaining combatants will then fight their way through the final bracket in the hope of achieving victory for their kingdom!
Oobleck: And yes, Peter, these certainly are some spectacular spectacles on which to spectate on! I don't think anyone tuning in around the world is going to disagree with me on that!
Port: Ahh, and why would they? Now, let's get back to the match between Team RWBY of Beacon, and Team ABRN, of Haven.
Reese steered her board through the ice. She twirled herself until the board got launched at Blake, but she was able to knock it away, only for Reese to direct it back at her opponent. Blake blocked it again, but the board rotated back to it's wielder just in time to defend Reese as Blake delivered several slashes and kicks. Reese deflected each attack and spon her weapon around until she could flip way and ride it again, rushing toward a smirking Blake. She collided with the frozen shadow clone, and Blake used the opportunity to slice the board in two, only for the halves to become dual katars that in turn fold up into bayonet-bladed revolvers. Reese managed to fire off a few green rounds before her tailbone collided painfully on the cold ground. Blake winced with sympathy.
(Y/N): Ouch.
Meanwhile, Yang landed mere feet away from Arslan, who backed away before being pounded by a flurry of punches and kicks until she delivered her own hits, ending with the two smashing fists and creating a shockwave of force from the impact. Yang and Arslan were both thrown back, but Yang reached her and tried delivering more blows before Arslan used her rope dart to tangle up her blonde adversary and land a kick of her own to send Yang skidding on the ground. While Yang tried to get her balance back on the slippery surface, Arslan rushed forward and knockd her back even further. Nearby, Nadir Shiko tried aiming with his assault rifle at Yang before a sudden burst of frosty blue exploded behind him and left the whimpering gunner in a block of ice up to his thighs.
Ruby: Got your back!
Bolin: But who's got yours?
Ruby looked up behind her as Bolin twirled his staff, right when a black snowflake glyph appeared to his left and Weiss kicked him through it into a rock.
Ruby: My BFF!
Weiss: No.
She ran off. But Ruby Pumped her fist while whispering to herself.
Ruby: Yes.
Bolin crouched with his weapon as he saw a white glyph appear in front of him. A second later, Weiss dashed by and slashed at him, then leaped up and attempted an aerial attack, which he was able to block. She readied her sword while preparing a glyph behind her, and Ruby used it to launch herself straight up and came down spinning on Bolin, who managed to block the curved blade. Ruby grimaced and blasted herself away to Weiss' side, and Bolin rushed at them, rolling away from the shards of ice that rain on him and jumped over Ruby's swing as he continued running.
Ruby: Whaaat!?
Bolin managed to reach an orange crystal deposit and sliced off a shard, which he threw to Reese over in the icy half of the stadium. With Dust in hand, Reese fused it with her board, turning the aqua lights to a crimson shade. She winked at Blake, then uses the board's heat to free Nadir from his icy snare. She came back to Blake and slammed her board into her enemy's blade, but propeled herself backwards and knocked Blake through a frozen pillar. Reese attempted to use her board to slam her foe into the ground, but when she dodged that, she spun around in a flaming arc that Blake narrowly missed thanks to her shadows. Changing tactics, Blake launched the pistol part of Gambol Shroud at a nearby glacier and launched herself behind it, as Reese followed her and saw Blake with her back turned to her under an arch. Reese grinned before riding in to deliver a flaming spiral at the shadow clone, only to see the ribbon Blake was launching to trap her opponent a moment too late. She pulled tightly and caused Reese to slam body-first into the string, only to use a final kick to knock her out of the stage. Reese crashed into the wall of the stands before landing on the ground, defeated.
Port: Ooh, a double whammy! Reese Chloris is eliminated by ringout and Aura level!
Oobleck: Oh, she really should've worn a helmet!
Back in the fight, Arslan used her rope to swing around and avoid Yang right behind her, using shotgun blasts to propel herself forward. Nadir came into the picture, aiming his rifle at Weiss as she summoned another glyph and launched Bolin at him. The two teammates were helpless as Weiss created a whirlwind from underneath them and slamming the two together until she formed a giant ice fist straight up from the ground to trap the two. It reformed itself into a ball that rolls around the field, and when Arslan saw her team in this state, she rolled her eyes, annoyed, before changing direction and sliding into the path of the ball. She readied her stance and drove her hand into the sphere, which cracked under her power and freed her allies.
Weiss: Yang!
Yang turned to look just as she created a large frozen slide-like shape.
Weiss: NOW!
Knowing what to do, Yang blasted herself forward and skimmed over the wall of ice, catching Blake's pistol as her teammate used Ruby as a launch pad to jump off of toward the remaining members of ABRN. The three only had a second to look horrified as Blake whipped a screaming Yang around to land a devastating punch that sent the trio flying into their elimination.
Yang: Yes!
Port: And that's the match! Team RWBY is victorious!
Weiss: We... did it?
(Y/N): Way to go, girls!
Ruby: WE DID IIIIII.........
(TimeSkip).
Ruby: ...is anyone else starving?
She said while hunched over as you and the rest were walking through an area with tents.
Blake: I may have worked up an appetite.
(Y/N): Yeah, I could eat too.
Weiss: Gee, if only there was somewhere on campus to get food around here.
She said sarcastically as she pointed to the myriad of tents and small shops wreathed in colorful flags in a large forest clearing as people mill about to experience it all.
Weiss: Oh, wait.
Ruby took Weiss' shoulder.
Ruby: It's okay, Weiss, I forget about the fairgrounds, too.
Weiss knocked Ruby's arm away.
Weiss: I was being facetious?
Ruby: Gah! Well if you were hungry, why didn't you say so!?
Yang: Come on! I know just the place.
You and the others started to follow Yang, but Weiss suddenly stopped as she heard a ringtone on her Scroll. Pulling it out, she saw the caller ID labeled "FATHER", and glared at the device, putting it back from where she got it, unanswered.
Emerald: Hey! Might be hard to eat without this.
She said as she held up a red wallet filled with lien. This made ruby frantically pat around her outfit.
Ruby: No, no, no, no!
Emerald: Good to see you, Ruby.
Ruby took the wallet back from her "friend" and put it away.
Ruby: Oh! Thanks, Emerald! Oh. Guess I dropped it. Girl pockets are the worst!
Yang: What's up, Em?
Emerald: Just left the stadium after your amazing fight! You guys were awesome!
Ruby blushed and mumbled.
Ruby: Oh, shut your stupid little face...
(Y/N): ?
Blake: I heard your team progressed to the next round too.
Weiss: You know, I feel that we haven't seen your other teammates.
Yang: How'd they do in the fight?
Emerald tilted her head up in thought.
(Flashback).
Emerald remembered her blasting opponents with her revolvers, then slashing behind her as Mercury kicked out a shotgun blast with his boots. Cinder did the same with her own target, landing the poor soul at the feet of their teammate, Neo, who was wearing a black wig and different clothes to keep herself from being noticed. She leaned over and stared down at the guy with her green eyes before blinking and they were then pink and brown irises. She soon smirked and then delivered a stomp on her victim's face.
(End of Flashback).
Emerald: Really well.
Ruby: That's great. Uh. Why don't we all go and get a victory food together.
Emerald: Oh, gosh, that's so nice of you, but my teammates are all kind of...
You all looked back at Mercury as he sniffed the inside of a boot, looking perplexed after he did so.
Emerald: ...introverted. Really socially awkward.
Yang: Ooh, yeah, I could see that.
(Y/N): How uh .........very unfortunate.
Emerald: Oh yeah, looks like Merc and I are going to move on to the doubles round. What about you guys?
Ruby: Well, as the leader of this team, I thought long and hard about this decision.
(Y/N) & Weiss: We put it to a vote.
Ruby nervously tried to backtrack.
Ruby: Yes, so, but I decided that we should put it to a vote.
Blake: We voted for Weiss and Yang.
Emerald: What about (Y/N)?
(Y/N): I decided to let this be settled by the girls on their own.
Weiss: I will happily represent Team RWBY.
Yang: Yeah, we're going to kick some butt!
Emerald: Well, if Mercury and I see you down the line, don't think we'll go easy on ya.
Yang and Weiss returned Emerald's confident smirk with their own.
Yang: Wouldn't have it any other way.
Emerald then turned and walked away from them as they do the same.
Emerald: Alright, well we're going to catch some more fights.
Ruby: Have fun!
Emerald: See you later!
She said as she cheerfully waved back before turning around and immediately dropped the act as she walked with Mercury and looked disgusted.
Mercury: So, how are the new friends?
Emerald: I hate them.
Mercury: Orders are orders.
Emerald: I just ...how can they be so happy all the time!?
Mercury: Did you at least get what we want?
Emerald: It's the heiress and the bimbo.
Mercury: Hmm, alright. At least we know who we're working with.
At one of the unassuming huts set up in the fairgrounds stringed with paper lanterns with a sign overhead saying A Simple Wok, You and the team sat at the stools outside, ready to order.
Yang: I'll have a bowl of the regular, please.
(Y/N): Me as well.
Two large bowl of noodles slid in front of you both.
Ruby: Oohhh ...I'll take the same.
A large bowl was slid to her as well.
Weiss: Do you have anything with a low-salt...?
A large bowl of regular noodles instantly slid in front of her instead.
Weiss: Um ...okay...
Instead of saying anything, Blake merely gave a nod and smiled to the Shopkeep, who returned the gesture as he rushed through one door of his shop and came out the other to leave a large bowl of noodles topped with fish in front of her. Blake's eyes lightened up as she drooled over her order. While Weiss looked strangely at her teammate, she gladly offered her Schnee Dust Company credit card to the Shopkeep.
Yang: Aw, Weiss! What's the occasion!?
Weiss: Consider it thanks for sending me to the doubles round.
Her joy was ruined when the card was flung back at her, and the annoyed Shopkeep pointed to his register as it beeped "DECLINED.
Weiss: What?! How can my card be declined? I was barely into my monthly allowance!
Blake looked around panicked as she attempted to slowly slide her bowl closer to herself before the Shopkeep disappeared with her food, causing the poor girl to slump over in defeat.
Weiss: Nooo!!
Pyrrha: Maybe I could help?
Pyrrha said as she and the rest of her team approached the stand.
Ruby: Pyrrha!
Yang: Aw, you don't have to ...
Blake: But she could!!!
Pyrrha: Well, I think you all earned it after that battle.
Jaune: Mind if we join you?
Sometime Later, the bowls were empty, and each student was either content with their meal or holding their stomachs sickly.
Ren: Are you sure it's wise to have eaten before a fight?
Pyrrha: Of course! It will give us energy!
Nora simply gave a hearty belch.
Jaune: If I barf, I'm blaming you.
Nora: Ooh! Aim at the enemy!
(Y/N): -_-
Ren: Nora, that's disgusting. But if you feel the urge ...
Jaune: Got it.
Pyrrha then stood up.
Pyrrha: Well, we should be off.
Ruby: So, you think you guys are ready?
Nora: Of course! We've got a world-renowned fighter on our team, one's basically ninja, I can bench five of me, Jaune, we trained all year, our weapons are awesome, Glynda barely yells at us anymore, and uh ...Jaune!
Ren looked to Jaune.
Ren: Are you gonna take that?
Jaune: She's not wrong.
Nora: I'm kidding, he knows I'm kidding.
Nora began to talk quickly as she got more worried
Nora: Don't be so nervous! The worst that can happen is we lose, that is just a few more years of walking around school with everyone knowing we're failures, our friends will slowly abandon us to preserve their social status, we won't be able to show our faces in class, no one will sit with us in the cafeteria, Ren and I have no parents, we have no home left to go to, we'll be officially renamed Team Lose-iper!
Her mad laughter turned into sobs as she slammed her head on the counter.
(Y/N):.......
Ren: So, yeah, we're feeling pretty good.
Pyrrha: Don't fret. If anything, we should be looking forward to a fight with actual guidelines, and not, well, ...murderers.
Yang: Yeah, don't sweat it, we've all faced way worse before.
Blake: Let's see. Grimm invasions, violent extremists, a destructive sociopath...
(Y/N): That about sums it up.
Ruby: And that's all while were still in training! Oh, imagine what it would be like to graduate!
Weiss: Maybe then I'll be able to pay for a meal.
Port then spoke over the intercom system.
Port: Would Team JNPR please report to the battlegrounds immediately!
Oobleck: Yes! Like they were scheduled to, several minutes ago!
Pyrrha: Well, it looks like this is it.
Ruby: Go get 'em!
She said to Team JNPR as they walked away with Nora still depressed and Jaune looking queasy.
(TimeSkip).
You and the girls entered the Coliseum through one of it's tunnels and headed to your seats as Emerald and Mercury were walking behind you to do the same. Down in the field below, the scorched ground and cold plains were no more, and only a layer of white mechanics was left, with a central stage on which the two teams gathered. Mercury was in his seat with Emerald and munching on a large tub of popcorn.
Mercury: I wonder who's gonna win.
Emerald: Tch. As if we didn't already know.
Cinder was walking up behind them before taking an unpopped kernel from Mercury's bucket.
Cinder: Oh, come now. Even if you know how the story ends, that doesn't make it any less fun to watch.
She used her fire power to heat up the unpopped kernel into pop corn.
Port: Team JNPR of Beacon versus Team of !
As each team readied their poses, a circle of holographic roulettes started spinning frantically through various symbols and colors before finally landing on a green pine tree and gray thunderstruck mountain. With those random selections, half of the field opened to reveal a tree-filled forest, while the other raised a small rocky outcropping to fill in the circle. Jaune narrowed his eyes in concentration.
Port: Three, two, one, begin!
As the start of the match, each team leapt forward at the other.
A/N: Time for round two.
