34: After Dark
DEVON
Come to my house
ISABELLA
Why?
ISABELLA
Devon?
Hellooo
Isabella had no choice but to get an Uber to Devon's house, mainly because she thought the girl was in need of help. However, her worry faded when she saw Sam and Tory walking towards the house too; she hugged Sam and kissed Tory in greeting.
Isabella asked, "You were called here, too?"
"Yeah," Tory replied, "Does Devon have a home dojo?"
"I don't know," Sam exclaimed, "But, I am wearing shoes in case Johnny throws us in a creek or quicksand."
"Johnny?" Isabella repeated.
"Yeah, Devon told me that he was here." Sam nodded, "Did she not tell you?"
"She must've forgotten." Isabella rolled her eyes, knowing that this late night meet up was definitely a lecture after todays karate class.
Devon opened the door, before the girls could knock, "You made it! We're in the basement."
The three girls exchanged looks of concern, before collectively making a decision to follow Devon down to the basement.
The basement was filled with pink balloons and party decorations: snacks on the table, a bowl of face masks, pillows, board games, and sleeping bags. Johnny stood in the centre of the basement, a proud smile beaming on his face as he opened up his arms to show off the decorated room.
"Welcome to Miyagi-Do After Dark." Johnny welcomed proudly.
Tory frowned slightly, "Wait, is this a slumber party?"
Devon entered the room, carrying in an organised box of nail polish, "I've never had one before. I didn't know what nail polish you guys like, so I just got them all."
Johnny nodded, "I figured since you all are friends, and girlfriends now, we can have a girls night."
"With you?" Tory questioned.
"Hell yeah, I'm a girl dad now." Johnny replied, "I brought cookies and tampons and everything. Come inside, grab a sleeping bag."
Isabella couldn't help but smile. She had never experienced a slumber party before, especially a slumber party that was being hosted by a dad— was that what dad's did? Isabella wasn't complaining, she had missed out on a father figure all of her life but now she had Johnny.
The girls started with face masks, then moved onto a pillow fight, followed by snacks: the five all sat around the circular table, placing their two fingers on the Ouija board.
Devon started, "Will Mitch ever win the All Valley?"
"Who the hell's Mitch?" Johnny frowned.
"Penis Breath." Isabella replied, before the planchette moved across the board to the word 'no'. Isabella squinted her eyes at Johnny sarcastically, knowing the man had moved it by himself.
Johnny asked, "Does Tory want Sam to fall down a flight of stairs, breaking every single bone in her body?"
"What?" Tory frowned.
"Let's see what it says," Johnny urged, as he forced the planchette along the wooden board, trying to land it on 'yes', but Sam and Tory were pushing back. Johnny used both hands to push it to 'yes'; he remarked, "That's ugly."
"Ask it a real question," Isabella suggested, "Like, what does—"
"If Tory could describe Belle in one word, what would that word be?" Johnny interrupted, as he began forcing the wooden planchette towards the letters, "B... I... T... C—"
"Johnny." Isabella scoffed in disbelief, as she removed her hands from the wooden device, watching as Tory stormed away from the table; Sam followed the girl, leaving only Isabella and Devon on the table with Johnny. She added sarcastically, "Seriously?"
"What?" Johnny exclaimed, "It could've said bitchin'."
"This is meant to be fun." Isabella said seriously, "This is my first slumber party and you're making it into a competition."
Isabella walked away, joining Sam and Tory on the couch; she cuddled into her girlfriend, as they watched funny videos on Tory's phone. However, they were interrupted a notifation buzzed at the top of Tory's phone screen:
MIGUEL
Hola, Mamacita
Isabella clicked on the notification with a frown, as she looked between the two girls who shared the same expression. Miguel definitely wouldn't do this, and there was only one person who would.
"Johnny, what the hell." Isabella sighed, as she got up from the couch and walked over to him and Devon; the man quickly hid his hands behind his back. Isabella frowned, "I know the message was from you. It's weird. Can you stop?"
"What do you mean?" Johnny asked cluelessly, "What message?"
Tory showed him the message on her phone, but the man shrugged again. Tory sighed, before calling Miguel's phone... however, the ringing echoed from behind Johnny's back.
"Lee, your phone's ringing." Johnny said quickly, "I didn't know you were such a social butterfly."
"You've been messing with us all night. Now you're trying to get us to start fighting." Sam accused.
Devon reasoned, "We just wanted to help get your edge back. So things can go back to the way they used to be."
"You think things were better when we hated each other's guts?" Tory scoffed in disbelief.
Isabella added, "Or, when we were coming home everyday with a new bruise or cut on our faces?"
"No. Maybe just south of that, like a really strong dislike." Johnny exclaimed, "Look, we're inside with chocolates, pillows, and air conditioning. I just want you all to hate each other in a friendly way."
Sam sighed, "I'm calling an Uber."
"Same," Tory nodded, before looking at Isabella, "You coming?"
The girl shook her head gently, before they kissed in goodbye, "I'll see you tomorrow in class, okay?"
Devon glanced between Isabella and Johnny; she felt awkward, so she left the two to talk things over. Devon exhaled, as she walked away, "I'll clean up."
Johnny sighed, "Look, kid, I'm—"
"An asshole?" Isabella finished his sentence, "You know, this was suppose to be fun. Why did you have to ruin it?"
"I want you to do well in the Sekai Taikai." Johnny explained, "I want you to get the girl's team captain. Not Sam or Tory or Devon. You. You're not gonna have a shot if you don't fight."
"Just because I don't wanna fight my girlfriend, it doesn't mean that I can't fight anymore." Isabella shot back, "I'm not gonna beat the shit out of anyone in Sensei's LaRusso's backyard. It's just practice, not the real tournament."
"I know," Johnny took a breath, "I just want you to be ready. You're gonna have to fight for this spot, kid. It's not gonna be easy." He paused, "But, I'm sorry. With everything going on between you and Tory... I should've been more patient. I'm sorry for being an asshole."
Isabella hesitated, before smiling slightly, "I was being an asshole, too."
