30: Fresh Start

"IT'S BEEN fifteen minutes, Belle!" Miguel pounded on the bathroom door again, "Robby and I are waiting to—"

Isabella opened the door quickly, a tooth brush resting in her mouth as her two brothers rushed inside to grab their toothbrushes too. Isabella walked out of the bathroom and towards her Grandma who was making their lunches.

Isabella asked curiously, "YaYa, what is that?"

"Ir al baño." Her Grandma shooed her away before any tooth paste dropped out of Isabella's mouth and onto the food she was packaging in paper bags.

"She's right, Belle. Go to the bathroom to brush your teeth." Carmen agreed, holding the small bump on her stomach. Isabella spat her saliva in the kitchen sink, before her mom guided her back to the bathroom.

Isabella attempted to open the door, stopping when Robby shouted from the inside the shower,

"I'm in here!"

The girl backed away from the door, and followed the hallway down to her shared bedroom, where Miguel was getting changed inside,

"Get out!" Miguel shouted.

Isabella rolled her eyes, before walking back towards the kitchen. She placed her toothbrush on the kitchen side, noticing Robby's skateboard which was leant up against the wall. She grabbed it, before skating to her next destination: breakfast.

"Pancakes are here, kid." Johnny said, motioning to one of three plates of pancakes on the counter. Isabella skated towards the other side of their cramped kitchen, dodging the three adults standing in her way.

Carmen called, "Boys! Pancakes are ready. Let's go, you're gonna be late."

Miguel walked down the hallway, followed by Robby who's hair was drenched. Robby remarked, "If Belle didn't take so long, we wouldn't be late."

"Rude," Isabella said sarcastically, chewing obnoxiously loud in his face as he passed her to grab his plate on pancakes. Robby sat at the kitchen table, joining Miguel as they both ate their pancakes which Johnny proudly made.

Her grandma insisted, shooing her away from her kitchen space, "Sentarse en la mesa."

Isabella obeyed, as she made her way towards the kitchen table. However, as Carmen was turning around, Isabella collided her skateboard straight into her foot; the girl picked up the board quickly, apologising.

Carmen sighed, "Ow! Okay, Belle, how many times have we said, no skateboard in the house?"

"It's not mine," Isabella reasoned, snitching on Robby who was innocently eating his pancakes.

Carmen took the skateboard from her, before asking, "Have you taken your pill this morning?"

"Yes." The girl answered quickly, as she sat down at the kitchen table.

"No." Carmen corrected, knowing the girl was lying.

Isabella reasoned, "Doctor Higgins said I could go off them because Karate is a good contact sport to release energy. Ma, please. If I don't like it, I'll go back on them."

Carmen paused, glancing at Johnny who was nodding at the idea, "Okay, fine. But, if anything happens, you're taking them again. Okay?"

"Understood." She replied.

Miguel asked both of them, "Are you excited to be back?"

Robby and Isabella shared a joint answer of: "No."

Isabella lowered her voice sarcastically, "You might find me in our old bunking spot."

Robby smirked, "I'll meet you there—"

"I don't want any phone calls home," Carmen interrupted, "Today is your first day. A fresh start, okay?"

After scoffing down the pancakes, their Grandma passed them all their lunches in brown paper bags, before Carmen hugged them all individually to send them off. Johnny kissed Carmen goodbye before walking outside to start up the car.

Isabella and Miguel looked at each other quickly. They both sprinted towards the car, pushing each other out of the way to get to the front seat first. Minding his business, Robby volunteered to sit in the back seats.

Carmen watched her kids fight from the front door, before calling, "Belle in the front on the way to school, Miguel in the front on the way home."

Miguel exclaimed, "What?"

Isabella opened the passenger side door, sticking her middle finger up at the boy, "Too bad, Migs." She buckled her seatbelt in, before pressing the buttons on the radio.

Johnny watched as the girl skipped music channels repeatedly. He shooed her hand away, "Leave this song on."

"Why?" Isabella made a face, "It sucks."

Johnny replied, "I'm gonna pretend you didn't say that." He began to reverse his car out of the space he was parked in, as a thought formed in the back of the her mind.

Isabella unbuckled her seatbelt quickly, opening the car door while Johnny was reversing which caused the three boys to panic. Johnny stressed, "Hey, whoa. Jesus, kid, what are you—"

"I forgot my phone." Isabella rushed back towards the house.

The truth was, Isabella was very anxious to go back to school; the last time she attended was when she got send to juvie. She was scared that people were going to remind her of the incident and tease her for it. She was scared for the lessons too; Isabella had to try and catch up on the things she had missed. It was hard to do that when she found it harder to focus. She hoped her new prescribed pills worked better than her old ones.

"We have math first," Miguel reminded, as they walked into the building. He looked at his sister, who wasn't as happy as she was at home, "You're gonna be okay, Belle."

Isabella replied, "I'm gonna go to the restroom."

"What?" Miguel questioned, "Lesson starts soon and—"

"Relax, Miggy." She reassured, "I'm not bunking, promise."

"Okay, I'll see you in class." Miguel smiled, before walking over to Sam; after what happened at the dojo a few weeks ago, the pair had gotten back together.

Isabella was telling the truth: she wasn't bunking. She was going to the toilet to meet someone. They had been texting a lot since what had happened, and occasionally meeting up, too. The real truth was that Isabella was dating...

"Tory!" Isabella called her name, as the two walked towards each other. It was too risky to kiss in corridors, hence why the restrooms were the safer option until the two girls were ready to tell their friends.

"I've missed you." Tory smiled, "How are you feeling?"

"Good," Isabella inhaled.

Tory raised her eyebrows, "The truth."

The girl exhaled, "Scared."

"Listen, nobody's gonna say anything. I mean, if they do, tell me. But, they won't bring it up." Tory comforted, holding both of Isabella's hands, "Everyone's too busy thinking about college. Trust me, Issy."

Isabella smirked.

Tory squinted her eyes sarcastically, "What?"

"Issy." The girl cooed, "I like—"

"I'm not saying it again," Tory chuckled, "You're stepping over the line, now."

"Come on, Tory." Isabella laughed, "Just one more—"

The bell rang loudly, interrupting their conversation, declaring the school day had started.
