24: The Baby
ISABELLA AWOKE from a nap when she heard air horn blare from outside of her apartment. At first, she didn't react to it, expecting it to be another prank from her neighbours; however, the banging and shouting that followed made her worry— especially because she recognised the voices.
Isabella opened her door cautiously, her eyes darting around to see Johnny looking up at the second floor balcony in concern; yelling at Robby and Miguel to get down. Her eyes traveled to the balcony: Miguel punching Robby as they travelled closer and closer to the railing.
"Shit!" Isabella cursed, before sprinting up the stairwell to the second floor. She rushed towards Miguel, pushing him back before he could punch Robby again. She yelled, "Miguel, stop!"
The boy did; his breath heavy and his eyes filled with tears. He lowered his fist, staring at Robby who looked frightened yet relieved it was over.
Robby asked, "Why'd you hold back?"
"I didn't get into karate to hurt people." Miguel panted, "I did it to be badass and find balance." He paused, "Last time we fought like this, uh, how come you didn't hold back?"
"I wanted to finish the fight. I mean, not like that, I just... I had tunnel vision and I got so angry I forgot where I was." Robby explained, "I'd take it back in a second if I could. I mean, I was the cause for the worst moment of your life. And if it's any consolation, it was the worst moment in my life too."
Miguel smiled slightly, hesitant, "I'll take it."
Isabella gasped, "Holy shit!"
"What?"
"Are you okay?"
"That was the first nice conversation you've ever had." Isabella smiled, and the two boys let out a chuckle. Miguel wrapped his arm around his sister, side hugging her as a form of apologising for the argument they had previously had.
"So?" Johnny asked curiously, "Is it over? Are you guys good?" He took a breath of relief, "Thank God. If you still hated each other when the baby gets here—"
Johnny stopped himself, his face dropping. Isabella, Miguel, and Robby all shared a confused glance with each other. Miguel repeated, "The baby? Wait, what? Like, you and our mom?"
"Yeah, uh, we're having a baby." Johnny exclaimed, "We were supposed to tell you together, so act surprised—"
Isabella exclaimed loudly, "Fuck yeah!"
"Yeah, like that." Johnny pointed.
"Holy shit!" Miguel hugged Johnny tightly.
"Dad, that's awesome." Robby smiled with a chuckle, "That's awesome."
In celebration of their new friendship, Johnny decided to order dinner together— their first dinner as a whole family. They started eating, waiting for Carmen to come home from her work shift.
"You can't say you know yet," Johnny insisted, "I'm looking at you, Belle."
The girl blurted out again, "Wait, so that technically means that Robby's my step-brother. Meaning that if this baby isn't a girl, I'm overpowered by boys in this house."
"Too bad," Miguel chuckled.
"What about names?" Isabella continued, "Is it gonna be a normal name or a unique name? I bet it's a girl, I'm just saying—"
"You're totally gonna give this away." Robby interrupted sarcastically, "You have to act like you don't know."
Isabella replied, "I know but, wait, when's the— ow!"
Miguel and Robby kicked her underneath the table as Carmen walked through the door. She looked surprised that Robby was sat at her kitchen table, but even more surprised that her twins were not arguing anymore. They all smiled too innocently.
"Hi, Ms Diaz." Robby said, "I hope it's cool I'm having dinner here."
"It's very cool," Carmen nodded hesitantly, "You're welcome here anytime, Robby."
"Hola, amors." Carmen kissed the top of the twins head, "Am I still going to have to lecture you about that argument or have you sorted it?"
Miguel nodded, "We've sorted it."
"I hope those bruises on Miggy's face have nothing to do with it." Carmen replied.
"Yeah, I kicked the shit out of him." Isabella deadpanned; her mother turned quickly to look at her, ready to give a lecture. She added quickly, "I'm joking. That was Johnny's fault."
Carmen sighed, "Please don't tell me you beat them into becoming friends."
"They beat each other into submission." Johnny corrected, "Don't worry, it was all supervised."
