A New Beginning

Making it big in Japan wouldn't be easy, but this horse girl was willing to give it her all to live her dream.

Sunny Blaze was taking her first step into Tracen Academy, the most popular horse girl school in Japan located in Tokyo. She had never been to a big city, spending most of her time in Kagoshima when she first arrived to Asia. It kind of intimidated her in a way.

“Come on, Blaze.” She encouraged herself, “This is where you can make your mark.” Today was her first day at Tracen Academy and she wanted to make a good impression.

“Hello!” Greeted a human girl. She wore a green uniform and a matching hat. Sunny Blaze could see that she wasn't a horse girl and recognized her as the chairman's secretary. “Hi.” Sunny waved kindly and bowed in greeting. “You must be the new student, Sunny Blaze?”

Sunny nodded confidently, “That's me.” The secretary beamed at her, “Fantastic. I’m Tazuna Hayakawa and I’m the secretary. If you need any help, please just inform me or any of the other school staff.”

“Thank you.” Sunny smiled and walked through the door. There were so many other horse girls, Sunny had never seen so many. She didn't spot some specific girls, though. They were still in school hours so they couldn't be training, could they?

Blaze’s jaw dropped when she saw a popular horse girl from Team Rigil; Grass Wonder. She was one of the faster horse girls, just recovered from a leg injury almost a year and a half ago. Wow, this place is the real deal! Sunny thought to herself.

She was so starstruck by some other famous girls that she didn't notice Grass Wonder approached her. “Hello! You're new here, aren't you? I don't recall seeing you here before.”

“Ah- um yes!” Sunny answered mildly still in awe. “My name is Sunny Blaze.” Grass clasped her hands together, “Ah, Blaze-San. Nice to meet you, I’m-”

Sunny interrupted, “Grass Wonder from Team Rigil. Yeah, I know who you are. You're on TV a lot.” Grass stared for a second and chuckled, “Yes, I can't believe you recognize me. I’m not as popular as some other girls here. I hope we can be good friends and you have a good time here at Tracen Academy. “

“Friends?” Sunny gasped. Grass nodded and stepped to the side, “Anyways, I gotta go to class. See you later, Blaze-San!” She waved. Sunny grinned and turned around to see if she could meet some other horse girls from Team Rigil. This would be the racing team she would want to choose. There were many other options, but Rigil was the team that would really make her improve and stand out. After all, how else would she beat her competition from Team Spica?

Sunny Blaze had never personally met her ‘competition’ from Spica but had set goals for her against this particular horse girl. She would show that she can beat even the best horse girl in Japan.

As Sunny entered the classroom, she eyed all her classmates, trying to spot some familiar name. Seiun Sky was there, dozing off on her desk, she was very popular. A younger horse girl that Sunny recognize as Haru Urara was walking around the class, though she was obviously an underclassmen.

She walked to an empty desk, quickly greeted Urara and examined Seiun Sky. Seiun was known to be a sort of trickster, but even seeing her up close, Blaze couldn't notice why this girl won so many races. Her face was always stoic and laid back. This girl couldn't take anything seriously, it seemed like.

“Ah! I was almost late! I’m so sorry!” A slightly familiar voice cried. The next horse girl to come in the door was none other than Special Week from Team Spica. She chattered about her waking up late to Urara as Sunny stared in awe and wonder.

There she was, Special Week; the best horse girl in Japan. The one that was said to beat Broye, the legendary horse girl of Europe.  She was from the small town of Hokkaido but became a very popular racer here. This was the girl Sunny wanted to beat. Her main competition. Though Special Week didn't even glance at her yet, Sunny already confirmed her own promise to herself deep inside her. She couldn't wait to show herself off on the track later in the day.

Finally, after a while of staring, Blaze got the courage to speak up when Special Week would go to her desk, which happened to be one seat ahead of the desk beside her.

Special Week plopped her stuff next to her desk and leaned back on her chair, “I’m still tired from yesterday.” A classmate asked, “Was practice rough again?” Special Week nodded slowly and sighed. “Yeah, but I think I got a little faster. I can almost keep up with Suzuka-San completely now. It just takes a little more effort.”

Silence Suzuka: another legend from Tracen Academy. She was well known for her high speed racing and endurance as well as strategy. She was probably even tougher than Special Week. But from the Winter Dream Trophy Race she saw on TV, Special Week was able to stay with Suzuka at the last round and all eighteen racers in there managed to tie.

It was something of a miracle to see, but Sunny promised herself if a chance like that came for her, she would come in first place.

“Say, Special Week,” Sunny added in. Special Week turned her head to Sunny and hummed a question. “You said it’s an effort to stay neck and neck with Suzuka, but would it be hard to keep up with you?” She sounded even more challenging than she meant to.

Special Week waved her hand and chuckled nervously, “No, no. I don't wanna make myself sound like that. I mean, I am really proud of what I have accomplished, but I don't want to brag about myself. You must be a new student here?”

Sunny smirked and propped her head on her palm, “Yes I am. Sunny Blaze.” Special Week smiled, “Wow, a new student! I can't wait to see you out in the track. Will you be joining a team for racing?” Sunny nodded, “I’m looking out for Team Rigil.”

Special Week’s eyes widened, “Wow, those girls are pretty tough to compete with.” Sunny replied, “I’m sure I could manage. I do hope I can race with you someday, I’d love to see what you got in you.”

“Well thank you. I’ll make sure to keep an eye on you.”

“You better.” Special Week opened her mouth a bit and looked at Sunny curiously as she went on. “My goal here is to beat the best horse girl in Japan, which is you. I’m going to prove to everyone and you that I’m just an impressive racer as you.”

Special Week’s brown ears twitched a little in curiosity and she took a moment to process what Sunny said. She definitely saw the kindled flame in Sunny’s amber brown eyes. This was gonna be interesting. She seemed like a nice girl, so Special Week nodded with equal determination and grinned, “Don't expect it to be easy, either, Blaze-San.” Sunny nodded, “Likewise to you, Spe-chan.” She winked.

The deal was on between the two horse girls to see who would be the best in the end. Sunny may have not realized it, but beating Special Week practically meant she would then be called the best horse girl in Japan.

After the school time, Sunny changed from her purple school uniform into her school running outfit. She didn't particularly like maroon on her, but she made it work. She brushed out her long tawny hair and tail, dusting the dirt off the lavender highlights and brown streaks. She tied her hair into a ponytail. She tightened the purple bow on her left ear and stepped out onto the fresh, grassy track.

Most of the other horse girls were already out, so Sunny jogged over to them and joined. She noticed they were mostly all from Team Rigil, except for a few ones who didn't have a team and still wanted to train.

The teacher, Hana Toujou, was still not anywhere to be seen, so Sunny Blaze walked over to the rails and leaned against one in a relaxed manner. “Hi, Grass-chan.” She waved at Grass Wonder who was doing some easy stretches. Grass Wonder smiled and waved back, “Hi, Blaze-chan.” Sunny got a little excited, her tail whipped once in joy.

But suddenly, when Sunny was minding her own business, tall, long, fuschia haired horse girl walked over next to her. She had sky blue eyes and wore light pink ear caps on her short ears. “Hey, do you see that guy over there?” Sunny looked to the girl then to where she gestured.

There was a weird guy hanging around the track. He looked a little like a thug to Sunny with his brown ponytail and grey vest over his yellow sweater. He appeared to be sucking on a green lollipop as he eyed each of the horse girls in a somewhat interested manner.

Sunny shivered and hugged her own arms, “Who is he?” Pink chuckled and murmured, “I think he’s the trainer for Team Spica. Rumor has it, he’s got a weird fetish for horse girls. Imagine what the girls there have to go through!”

“He wouldn't!” Sunny gasped. The other horse girl snickered and looked at Sunny, “He must be the weirdest perv I’ve ever seen.”

“Where did you hear this?”

“Around school somewhere. Flower Flash is my name.” She put out her hand. Sunny hadn't ever seen anyone put out their hand like that. “Oh yeah, sorry!” Flash pulled her hand back. “I forget that people here greet themselves with bowing.” She proceeded to bow genially to Sunny. “I’m Sunny Blaze.” She bowed as well. “It’s alright. It took me a while for me to get used to it. Are you from somewhere else?”

Flash nodded and placed her hand on her head in a playful manner. “I’m from the great country of USA!” Sunny’s smile grew bigger, “Really? So am I! I was born there, at least. I spent most of my life here in Japan though. This is my first time being in Tokyo.”

“Great, so we both are the same here.” Flash prompted.

Finally, the trainer, Hana Toujou came out. She still wore her earlier pantsuit, holding a clipboard. “Alright, girls; let’s get started.” she examined some of the new horse girls, eyeing their build and shape. The president of the school was there next to the trainer; Symboli Rudolf. She didn't line up like the rest of the new girls or Team Rigil girls did.

Hana put the pen to her chin and noticed Sunny Blaze. She was new here too, wasn't she? She asked some of the new girls the same questions and nodded approvingly, then she got to Sunny Blaze. “Would you like to introduce yourself?”

Sunny didn't change her posture and answered formally, “I am Sunny Blaze from Kagoshima. I was born in America but I spent most of my lifetime in Japan.” Hana was immediately intrigued and questioned, “What is your goal here at Tracen Academy?”

“My goal is to tryout for and join Team Rigil and someday race against the best horse girl in Japan.” Now this caught some of the other girl’s attention. They looked at Sunny curiously, some in utter shock. All of them knew that the best horse girl was Special Week. Most of the girls from Team Rigil have run against her and haven't been able to beat her. Except for Grass Wonder, who raced against her when she was in a slump over Suzuka’s accident.

“Who does this girl think she is?” The sassy Hishi Amazon hissed under her breath. El Condor Pasa, an American born horse girl, admired, “She’s aiming high, that's what. And that's nothing to be suspicious about.” She adjusted her red and yellow mask and smiled

Trainer Hana lifted her glasses and turned, “Thank you for the introduction, Blaze-San. There's not many other new girls here for a specific tryout race. Anyways, let’s start off with the test run. Let's see if we're all at our usual standards. Remember, this is a warm up, so you don't need to waste yourself. Grass Wonder, I want you to join them to make sure your keeping fine. El Condor Pasa?”

“Yes?” El turned energetically at Hana. “Take it easy on the new ones, join them.” She called a few other experienced girls to take up a few more spaces with the new ones.

Most of the horse girls lined up at the starting gate and entered each of their places. Sunny got next to Flash and challenged, “You look fast, I hope you are as I expect.” Flash retorted, “Well I just got back from a race in Osaka, but I’ll still try my best. I hope you’ll go easy on me.”

“Not a chance.”

“I got this!” A horse girl with black short hair snorted. She had her short hair in a ponytail and her bangs stuck out with a streak of white in her face. Sunny smirked, Not as long as I’m here.

Hana set her stopwatch and began, “Okay, ready!” All girls got in positions. Get ready. Show em what you got. This is where you start your dream. Sunny thought to herself. “Set!” The gates clicked, ready to let the girls out. Just breathe.

“Go!!”
