chapter five!

season 1, episode 2 - summer dress (pt.2)!

ONCE THEY FOUND the country club, the three of them went inside. Mia noticed Belly and Jeremiah, causing her cheeks to heat up. The blonde boy was shirtless, obviously because he was on lifeguard duty.

"Hey, Jere.  Hi, Isabel."

"Hi, Mia."

Jere checked the imaginary watch on his wrist. "I should get going. You two are going to kill it. Later, Belly! Later, Mia!"

"Bye, Jere!" the two girls stated.

"I'll see you in there." Belly said to Mia as she went inside the dining hall.

Alex quickly told Cam goodbye before going in the room, leaving Mia and Cam alone.

"I should probably get inside now. See you later, Cameron?"

"See you later, Knight. Just text me when you and Alex are ready to leave."

"I will."

The girl took a deep breath before going inside.

KIARA AND SAM were there.  Kiara was sitting at the same table as Belly, Shayla, and Nicole.  Taking a seat next to Kiara, she quickly greeted them before talking to Kiara.  Sam was sitting at a separate table, unsure of which scone to eat.  "Hey, Sam."

The boy looked up, relieved it was Alex.  "Um, hi?"

"Oh, I'm sorry.  Was I disturbing you? Because if I was, I can -"

"No, no.  You can sit."

Alex took the seat next to him, placing a few scones on the plate in front of him.  As he ate one, his face grimaced with disgust.  "This one is a bit too sweet."

"Really?"

"Yeah.  Here." Alex handed him one of the scones, causing Sam to bite into it.   "It isn't even that sweet."

"How? We're eating the same scone!"

"We have different taste buds." Sam stated as he took another bite.  "So are you excited to be an escort?" Alex asked.

"No.  I didn't even know my parents signed me up until my cousin got her invitation."

"Oh.  Well, I'm excited.  I get to dance and eat good food!"

Sam nodded his head as he continued eating his scone.  Alex drank some tea, wishing it was warmer.  "Do you have any hobbies?" Alex asked.

"I know how to skateboard."

"Oh.  That's cool.  I like to paint. Also I think they just opened a skate park here."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"You need to show me around some time."

"Are you asking me to hang out?"

"No."

"Okay, Samuel."

"Don't call me that."

"You kind of sound like my sister whenever she talks to Cam."

"You mean the curly haired guy?"

"Yeah.  They used to be friends but something happened."

"Well, they sure hate each other."

"I bet they'll fall in love."

"I don't think so." Alex placed down his tea.  "Okay, how about this? We make a deal.  If the two of them get together next summer, you owe me a free dinner."

"And if I win?"

"You get brownies."

Sam rolled his eyes, "Fine.  But your going to lose."

The two of them shook hands and went back to eating.

THE TEA PARTY was finally over as all of the debutantes started to leave.  Kiara and Nicole were talking about something while Sam walked behind them.  Alex was placing some refreshments in a doggy bag for the siblings to take home.  Cam was walking up the stairs, only for him to be greeted by Belly.

The two were talking to each other.  "We can go whale watching if you want." Cam told her.

"I would love to..." Belly noticed Mia in the dining room, "But I'm going to be a bit busy."

"Oh.  We can go another day."

"I think you should take Mia instead.  It would be a good opportunity for you guys to get along and maybe learn more about each other?"

"Yeah, that's a good idea.  See you around, Belly."

"Bye, Cam!" The girl waved him goodbye as she walked down the stairs. 

The two siblings finally came out of the dining hall.  "Are you guys ready to go?"

"Yeah."

"Yes, Cameron."

"Okay.  Let's go."

The three of them left the country club and got into Cam's car.  Mia sat in the passenger seat while Alex sat in the back seat.  The three of them buckled their seat belts and Cam drove off.

Finally reaching the Knight household, Cam found a spot.  As Alex got out of the car, Cam helped Mia open her side door.  "Thank you, Cameron."

"No problem, Knight."

The three of them walked into the Knight household. Mia and Alex's dad was in the living room, watching football. "Hey, dad. We're home."

"Hey, kids." their father stated as he got up from the couch and hugged them. "Hi, Mr. Knight."

"Hi, Cam."

"Can I speak to Mia for a minute?"

"Sure!" Alex and his father went into the kitchen, leaving Mia and Cam alone. "Yes, Cameron?"

"Do you want to go whale watching with me? If we go now, we can still catch the boat."

"Sure.  I'll change real quick."

Mia went upstairs to her room.  She quickly put on a blue tank top, a tennis skirt, and sneakers. Putting her hair in a ponytail, she grabbed her lip gloss and her phone.  "I'm ready!" Mia stated as she walked down the stairs.  "Honey, where are you going?" Mrs. Knight asked.  "Hi, mom.  Me and Cameron are going whale watching.  Is it okay if I go?"

"Of course, honey.  Just send us pictures."

"I will!"

Mia opened the front door and walked outside.  Closing the door behind her, she noticed Cam's car wasn't there.

Did he just ditch me?, she thought to herself.  The door opened, revealing Cam.  "Hey, Knight.  I thought you were still inside."

"Oh.  Are we walking?"

"No, I had to find another spot.  I'll show you."  The two of them walked to the car, Cam unlocking it.  The two of them got in and buckled their seatbelts.  Cam started the car and drove away.

FINDING A SPOT, the two of them got out of the car.  As they walked on the dock, Cam turned to face her. "Have you ever gone whale watching before, Knight?"

"No. Have you?"

"Yes, a few times actually. It's pretty fun."

"Well, we'll have to see about that."

Cam boarded the boat first, helping Mia get on. Once the two of them found a spot to watch, the boat started to move. They were the only ones on the boat.

As Mia looked at the water, she turned her head to Cam's. "You know, while we're here, we should play 20 questions."

"Really, Knight?"

"Yes, Cameron. Unless you just want to stand and watch the whales in silence?"

Cam rolled his eyes, "Fine. I'll play."

"Okay, I'll go first. What's your favorite sea animal?"

"I would probably have to say seals. They're kind of cute."

"I thought you were going to say whales."

"You really think that low of me, Knight? I'm a bit hurt."

"I was joking, Cameron."

"Alright, now it's my turn. If you could be in any movie or tv show, which one would it be?"

"Shit, this is hard. I'd have to say Beauty and the Beast."

"Why?"

"The Beast literally gave Belle a big library to herself. I'd love to have that."

"So you'd want to live in a castle with the Beast and read books all day?"

"Yes, Cameron. Plus, I get a free show every day when I'm eating."

Cam laughed, "But the Beast sheds so much."

"Sounds like your jealous of the Beast."

"Why would I be jealous of the Beast? He's fictional and he got cursed for not letting a stranger into his house."

"That's true."

"Are you agreeing with me, Knight?"

"No."

"Yes, you are."

"We're supposed to be asking each other questions, Cameron. Its my turn again. What's your favorite book?"

"Shit, I don't know."

"Cameron! Language!"

"Don't act like this is the first time you've heard me curse, Knight."

She rolled her eyes, "Your still not answering the question."

"Fine. I'll probably have to say Percy Jackson and the Olympians."

"Why?"

"It's pretty nostalgic. Also Percy's super badass and him and Annabeth are super cute together."

"I haven't read the books actually."

"What? Your missing out, Knight."

"How am I missing out?"

"Oh my gosh, I can't believe you haven't read them. Tell you what, one of these days, I'll let you borrow the books."

"Really? Your kidding."

"No, no. I'm serious."

"Alright. Its your turn, Cameron."

"What's your favorite book, Knight?"

"Probably To All the Boys I Loved Before. The movies are so good."

"I've watched them with my mom. I tried reading the books before and never read the third one."

"Who do you prefer with Lara Jean: John Ambrose or Peter Kavinsky?"

"Honestly, I felt bad for John Ambrose. Him and Lara Jean were kind of cute."

"Me too. They both are so cute with her though, its so hard to choose."

The wind started to blow as the boat rocked a bit. Mia took some pictures of the whales on her phone. She started to get goosebumps on her arms as the chilly breeze continued to blow. "Its a bit cold."

Cam took off his sweatshirt, placing in over her arm. "I'm kind of curious, though. Is your last name actually Cameron?"

"No, its not."

"What is it then?"

"Rodriguez. Cameron Rodriguez."

Mia's mouth widened. "So I've been calling you by your first name all this time?"

Cam chuckled, "Yes. When we were younger, I never corrected you."

"This isn't funny!"

"But it is. The look on your face."

She rolled her eyes, "So should I call you Rodriguez now?"

"Yeah, I mean, now that you know my actual last name."

"But why didn't you tell me?"

"Because people always assumed that my last name was Cameron so I just stuck with it. Plus, do you know how many people have failed to pronounce my last name?"

"I know what you mean, Rodriguez. People still can't say Gutierrez right."

Cam smirked, "But now I'm a bit curious. Who do you want to make jealous?"

Mia sighed, "You know that blonde boy who was with Belly earlier? Well, that was Jeremiah. I've liked him for a while now and this summer, I really want him to like me back. But I don't know if he ever will."

"Don't worry, Knight. I'm sure he will."

"Oh, please. Your just saying that."

"No, I'm not. Your really awesome and smart. So don't downplay yourself, Knight."

"When did you start caring?"

"It comes with the 'boyfriend' package. Get used to it. You still owe me free food though."

"I'll give some to you by the end of the week."

"Promise?"

"I promise."

The two teens continued asking each other questions as they watched the whales. Soon, the sun started to set and they decided to call it a night. The two of them got off the boat and into Cam's car. He drove off to the Knight household, finding a spot. As Mia opened her side door, she stopped herself for a minute. "Rodriguez?"

"Yes, Knight?"

"I had a great time. Thank you."

"Did I just hear you say thank you?"

"Yes, you did. Don't get ahead of yourself, Rodriguez. Anyways, text me when you get home."

"I will. Knight?"

"Yes, Rodriguez?"

"Can I have my sweatshirt back?"

Mia realized that she still had it on. "I don't know. It kind of goes with my outfit, don't you think?"

"It does but I need it. Please?"

Mia playfully rolled her eyes, "Fine. Since you asked nicely." She took off the sweatshirt and handed it back to him. "But see you tomorrow, Rodriguez."

"Tomorrow?"

"Your invited to Belly's birthday party. I asked her if you could come at the tea party."

"Oh. What time should I pick you up?"

"Maybe at like two?"

"Okay. Bye, Knight."

She watched as Cam's car drove off. Mia then went inside, shutting the front door. I hope things go well tomorrow, she thought.
