Adrien, What's Wrong?
The next morning, I woke up even before my alarm went off. I layed in bed for a moment, tossing and turning, trying to go back to sleep. But what happened last night was still fresh in my mind. It was really getting to me and I didn't know why.
I also didn't know why I promised to meet up with him tonight. And the fact that he almost kissed me. That was the biggest thing on my mind. I was just a split second away from being kissed by the Chat Noir. Not that I really cared or anything, but what if I did? What if I couldn't sleep because of the shear adrenaline that shot through my body just moments before his attempt.
Or maybe, it was that he said he didn't know how to feel about Ladybug anymore.
I don't know.
I gave up on sleeping eventually and got up and dressed for the day. Tikki slept through the alarm clock. I decided to let her sleep since she stayed up most of the night watching the window for any other intruders. I carefully picked her up off of her pillow and ever so gentally slipped her into my purse and went downstairs.
Mom had already made breakfast and Papa was already seated with his plate, coffee, and newspaper. I seated in front of him across the table and began to eat my breakfast.
"Marrinette," Mom began. "Don't forget to bring some volunteers back from school with you to help out in the bakery! We need the extra hands!"
"I know, I won't!" I said, snapping out of my daze.
Suddenly, Tikki shifted in my purse causing me to jump from surprise.
"Marrinette? Is something wrong?" Papa asked looking up from his paper and plate of breakfast.
"No! Nothing, I'm fine! Just jumpy, I guess!" I said, loosening up. "I better go! Don't wanna be late for school!"
I stood as both of my parents said goodbye. I ran down the stairs, through the bakery, and out the front door. It felt good to leave the awkwardness back at home, that is until someone else brought it back.
I ran out of the door and almost immediately ran into someone. I bounced backwards before falling to the ground, followed by the thud on the ground from the other guy.
"I'm so sorry!" I exclaimed, looking up.
The other person had already recomposed themselves and was now on his feet.
"Don't sweat it, Marrinette!"
The voice was all too familiar to me!
"A-A-A-Adrien!" I shrieked, shooting up off the ground, quickly recollecting myself.
He cocked his head slightly. "You okay, Marrinette?" He asked stepping forward.
"Y-yeah! I- um- had to- um- hurry to school!" I stuttered, internal facepalming myself.
"Uh yeah, sure! We could walk together if you want?"
"Oh you really don't have to do that! I forgot something anyway!" I said, turning back to the bakery.
"Then I'll wait for you!" he said, half jumping at me.
"Um, okay?" I said running into the bakery.
I slammed the door behind me. The bakery was empty. Tikki flew out of my purse and hovered in front if my face.
"What's wrong, Marrinette? I thought you would jump at the chance to walk to school with Adrien."
"I don't know, Tikki! I think it might have something to do with Chat Noir's visit last night," I muttered.
"Yeah, you've been really out of it since then, now that you mention it." she pointed out.
"Well I can't let that distract me now!" I stated, opening my purse as Tikki flew back into it. I turned on my heals and marched out the door.
Adrien was still there waiting surprisingly enough. However the boy looked startled to see her, almost as if he were up to something and was almost caught.
He stiffened, not moving a muscle except for when he straightened out his back.
"Um Adrien? Are you okay?" I asked.
"Uh? Yeah, sure! Never better,
M-Marrinette!" he stuttered, nervously looking around, as if trying to find a way out of a tight space.
I cocked my own head in curiosity. His face tented pink.
'Wait is he...blushing?' I thought. I leaned in slightly, then his face turned from nervous to caught red handed. He threw himself backwards and landed on his back.
"Adrien!" I shrieked.
His worried stare changed immediately into a smug grin, almost as if he had just caught on to something.
'I wish I knew what was going on inside that boys head!' I thought.
(AN: for those of you who are totally lost, he just realized that Marrinette sees him as adrien right now, not as chat noir. That was his moment of realization for those who hadn't caught on just yet... back to the story shall we?)
He straightened up a little bit, his grin not loosing it's brilliance. His blonde hair flew as the breeze blew softly through his hair.
My face tented pink.
"Hey, Marrinette? You okay?" Adrien asked, pulling me out of my daydream.
"Um, yeah!" I exclaimed, unable to control my mixed emotions at the time.
"Okay, then shall we?" he said, gesturing for us to start walking across the street.
I nodded and took off, not paying attention to see if he followed. When I got to the other side of the street, i stopped and turned to see if he was still on the other side.
To my surprise, he wasn't?
I looked around, left and right. I felt a tap on my shoulder. I whipped around and threw my right hand into a fist and let it fly. It was stopped short by a large, soft hand. I looked up to find Adrien, holding my hand just inches from his chest.
I blinked twice in confusion.
"Um, jumping a little, are we?" His smart like comment slightly irritated me.
I groaned and yanked my hand away. I realized I was acting as if this were Chat Noir standing in front of me. I straightened out and stood up tall.
Adrien looked surprised. He backed away. He thinks I'm jumpy today? I relaxed and looked him in the eye.
"Adrien, what's wrong?"
The question almost seemed foreign to him. Then he looked to the ground.
"Marrinette?" he said stepping closer.
"Yeah?" I said, looking up to meet his gaze.
"Promise me somthing." His gaze was intense. He almost looked like he was going to cry.
"Okay?" I was unsure by this point. Even I was choking on my own words.
"Never let your smile fade."
This statement surprised me.
"Promise me!" His voice grew stern, it scared me.
"Adrien, what are you talking about?" I was in a state of panic.
Suddenly his eyes began to glisten, as if filling with tears. Then he put his hands on the sides of my shoulders and rested his head on my right shoulder. My shoulder grew cold.
"Please, just promise me, Marrinette," he said, calming down. His breath quickened and my shoulder just kept getting colder. He was crying. And a lot it seemed.
"O-okay," I whispered, placing my right hand on his back and my left on his head. Tears began to stream from my eyes as well.
I had never thought in a million years that I'd be the one to see Adrien Agreste let his tears flow freely without caring who would stop to stare. Just wanting to just...cry.
