It doesn't take long for Ashanti to call me, laughing as both our phones start pinging again.
"Are you still going round?" She asks without giving me any opportunity to answer, "Morgs just facetimed me and the twins are fighting again. Apparently Apollo bought the wrong pasta and, upon Donnie's annoyance, started playing 'Truth Hurts' and 'Pretty Hurts' and I personally aspire to be that level of petty."
"Why is he freaking out so much?" I question rhetorically, imagining the 6 '2 male singing 'You could've had a bad bitch' at his twin. Apollo definitely did not give a dancing or singing vibe.
"Because he doesn't want you to think they're all weird. And his Dad's like seriously excited about meeting you." 'Shanti makes a suggestive noise, and I know exactly what she's thinking before she continues slowly. "I wonder where his Ma is, none of them have mentioned her."
"Yeah I know."
We both stay silent for a minute, before she perks up. "Right bitch, be good, be kind and be a legend. Phone me when you're home, babes, loves ya."
Inhaling deeply, I place my phone onto my desk and check my outfit.
It was far out of my comfort zone. A short sleeved t-shirt with black jeans definitely differed from my hoodie and leggings, but I wanted to make a good impression.
Regardless of the risk.
Not even a half hour later and I'm at the place that Google maps told me is Adonis' address.
I nervously stand outside The Walker's door, hand hovering over the letterbox as I hesitate to knock.
Getting over my anxieties, I knock and it takes less than 30 seconds for the door to swing open. Adonis' Dad stands in the hallway, his smile welcoming as I take in his appearance.
He's pale, just like Adonis said, his skin tone almost identical to Phoenix's and a striking contrast to the remaining Walker siblings.
"You must be Evan, my name is Oscar. It's a pleasure to meet you." He holds his hand out, which I take with acquiesce and he smiles.
"It's nice to meet you too, Mr Walker. Thank you for letting me come round."
Now that's all Adonis.
I follow him into his home. Pictures lined the walls, decorating the ivory walls with collisions of colours that looked so brazen between the gentle white undertones.
"I'm going to fuc-"
"Son, we have a guest so mind your language." Mr Walker scolds, gesturing to me as we walk into the kitchen.
Adonis straightens up, his eyes widening as he finally notices my presence. He's in ripped, black jeans and what must've been a simple black t-shirt that's now covered in flour. Apollo very obviously stifles a laugh at the sight of his twin.
"Go take a shower, take Evan up with you while Apollo and I sort this mess out." Adonis' Dad tuts, muttering to himself. "Have kids, they said. It'd be fun, they said."
He leads me upstairs in silence, walking into the bathroom without so much as gesturing for me where to go. I take a while guess anyways and end up in the room adjacent to Apollo's. The rest of the siblings had signs on the front of their doors but Dee's was completely bare.
I take a seat on the one section of his bed that wasn't covered in dirty clothes or books, looking instead at the single photo frame on his bedside table.
It's Adonis. With the rest of his brothers and sister, with Morgan stood in the middle. They couldn't have been more than 8 years old, with Morgan's two front teeth being non existent. Adonis doesn't look much different either, his own gapped smile was wide as Rory sidehugs him.
The bedroom door opens as my eyes are drawn away from the cute picture and my jaw drops open. Water droplets dribbled down Adonis' lean but built chest, my eyes followed them until they disappeared down into the towel that was wrapped snugly around his waist. My throat was thick, a lump preventing me from talking as I bit my lip. Random tattoos were scattered across his upper body, and I hear Adonis begin to chuckle as he notices my stare.
"Take a picture, it'll last longer."
I shrug, "Don't mind if I do." Before getting my phone out and taking a snap.
Adonis blinks at me, surprised, before bursting out in a fit of laughter.
"Fair play to you, Eva. Would probably do the same to you."
I can't help the blush that arises on my cheeks at his words, but try to shrug it off either way.
"Sorry about that, it's been a bit hectic here."
"Let me guess, Apollo?" I laugh as the sheepish smile on his face drops at his twin's name. "I kind of figured judging by the group chat."
"He's actually a prick."
"He's your brother. What do you expect?" I roll my eyes at the sibling rivalry. "The more you tell him to stop doing something, the more enjoyable you automatically make it."
Adonis just shakes his head, "Come on."
We walk downstairs, still being able to hear a commotion in the kitchen. I stand behind Adonis as we stopped in the doorway.
"SHUT THE FUCK UP." Apollo screams as the door opens, a packet of flour held threateningly in his hand.
Rory shakes her head at him, signing. "I can't. I can't do this anymore."
She continues after Apollo's eyebrows furrow.
"I can't speak to you when you're so emotional." Her eyes fill with sarcastic sympathy.
The rage that crosses across Apollo's eyes is of an entire new level.
"You're so cute when you get angry." She coos, to which he glares further at, opening and closing his mouth without saying anything. "Calm down, Apollo. You're not a fish."
"Apollo, I dare you to throw that as if I won't make you clean everything in this damned house." Mr Walker threatens, Phoenix by his side as he wordlessly takes in the state of the kitchen. "Go sit at the table, I'll bring the food in."
I follow Adonis to the dining room table, sitting down between him and Apollo. Phoenix is completely silent as he stares down solemnly at his empty plate. Rory is typing away on her phone and Apollo is watching the door, desperately waiting for food.
"What's on the menu today?" I ask cheekily, nudging Adonis with my shoulder.
"Tagliatelle, chicken and leek sauce. It's my personal speciality." Mr Walker cuts in, placing 3 large dishes onto the table.
My eyes widen at the amount of food, but each of the Walker kids shovel a decent amount onto their own plates.
With the exception of Phoenix.
I join them, enjoying the food as we eat in silence.
But even at the quietness of the table, I feel a small sense of belonging at the Walker's home. The typical family dinner was never a tradition that my home possessed, as my Mums were too often in work either at the same time or different. That, and my Dad's been in the army for pretty much my entire life.
Sitting here now makes me realise just how much I've missed out on due to my father's absence, Jonah's death and my Mother's mismatched jobs.
A part of me would've loved to have these small comforts.
"So Evan, what are you studying at college?"
"Biology, English Literature and Psychology. I'm aiming to study English Literature at University, I want to be a writer."
"That's quite interesting. The twins have quite diverse paths so I think it's good they surround themselves with people with strong career goals." He says with a smile. "It's weird not having Morgan here, to be honest, the boy never leaves my kitchen."
But his statement makes me curious, so I direct my next question at the twins. "What do you both want to do?"
"Navy or a mechanic." Adonis replies.
Apollo seems to ponder on the question for a moment, "I want to do Performing Arts, preferably singing."
There's something about the 6 foot tall, built like a God boy wanting to be a singer that surprises me greatly, I almost choke on my chicken.
"Wasn't expecting that, won't lie."
"Do you have siblings too, Evan?" Mr Walker questions aimlessly, finishing his food.
Before I have the chance to reply, Adonis' cutlery drops onto his plate and he stares at his Dad purposely. "Dad-"
"I have a younger brother, Atlas, and I had an older brother called Jonah." I swallow the lump in my throat at my words, keeping my eyes trained on my plate to avoid the looks of pity.
"Ah." Now Mr Walker settles his knife and fork on the table, "May I ask...How?"
I inhale deeply. "Killed on his way home, a stabbing. He was 18."
"I'm sorry you had to go through that. The loss of a sibling must be unimaginable."
All the Walker siblings now look solemn, probably pained at the idea of losing one of them.
"Ev, come on." Apollo gestures for me to follow him. I give the rest of the table a sheepish smile and follow him to the basement.
He pulls a cigarette box out of his pocket, getting a blunt out of it and lighting it.
"Ain't your Dad going to smell it?"
He shrugs, "He won't say anything. Doesn't really bother him."
Apollo's phone beeps a few times and my eyebrow cocks.
"Someone's popular. Any cute boys hitting you up?" I ask with a smirk.
He smiles back at me, "I guess Logan's pretty cute, huh."
"Ah." I nod my head, "So you found out then?"
"Yeah, he told me. I wouldn't have guessed."
"I always thought it was pretty obvious but I suppose that's what happens when you know someone for so long."
"I never thought I'd like London this much, man." Apollo rasps, coughing in way that he could've pulled off as a chuckle before taking another drag of his blunt.
I honestly never imagined being friends with another other that Ashanti, Logan and Morgan but here I am, in a basement where none of them are in sight.
"You want some?" He holds it towards me, nodding his head in invitation.
"Sure." I smile in thanks and reach my hand out.
And then I freeze.
I went out of my comfort zone today, ditching my long sleeves and hoodies. Instead, I'm wearing a short sleeved shirt and my inner wrists are visible.
Apollo's eyes are on the pink lines before I have a chance to move, standing out brazenly on my dark skin.
Taking a hit from the blunt, I stomach the courage to speak. "Ashanti's cat never liked me very much."
I attempt pathetically to shrug it off but Apollo eyes me knowingly.
"You want it gone?" He nods towards my arm.
My eyebrows furrow and he must have noticed my clear confusion as he pulls his hoodie off to reveal his upper arms covered in tattoos that lead to just below his elbows. But even amongst the collision of grey and black, I can see the little white lines seeping through.
Our eyes meet once again, his warm brown strikingly different to Adonis' ocean blue, and he shrugs.
"I had a dog instead." He sighs, "Just find something you want and I'll book you in with my artist, he needs to pay me a visit anyway."
"Thank you." I said, biting my lip.
"It ain't worth it, is it?" He takes the blunt back, inhaling deeply. "But it's fucking weird reaching the age that you thought you'd have killed yourself by."
"I know what you mean."
Confession: A part of Apollo is still at war with the rest of him, and that's why I think we get along so well. Both of us have internal battles with our hearts and minds. Both of us have had or have shit that we don't want other people to know.
