CHAPTER TWENTY, andi's big time relationship dilemma
Andi had been spending more time with her new boyfriend, Jax. She and Jax had hit it off quickly; his energy matched hers, and she enjoyed their time together. He was funny, spontaneous, and had a way of making her feel special. She found herself laughing more often, feeling lighter when they were together. And Jax genuinely seemed to care about her, always asking about her day and supporting her projects. But every once in a while, her mind would drift to that moment with Kendall. The way he'd thanked her, the look in his eyes, the warmth in his hug—it was all unexpected and stirred something inside her that she hadn't fully come to terms with. She knew Kendall cared for her as a friend, and that was all she could ever expect. After all, she was with Jax, and she wanted to make it work.
Andi was happier than she'd been in a long time, feeling like she'd finally found someone who understood her. Jax's spontaneous adventures and lightheartedness kept her on her toes, and he was endlessly supportive of her passions, always asking for updates on her latest project or cheering her on during late nights of work. She loved how he listened and made her feel valued in ways she hadn't even realized she craved. Yet, despite her happiness, she couldn't quite shake those moments with Kendall. She'd been caught off guard by his gratitude, by how deeply he'd looked into her eyes that day. The hug he'd given her was more than friendly—it lingered in her memory, unexpected and confusing. Though she cared deeply for Jax, her thoughts occasionally drifted back to Kendall, wondering what, if anything, she should make of it.
Andi pushed those thoughts aside, reminding herself that she was with Jax now, and she wanted to make their relationship work. Kendall had always been a close friend, nothing more, and besides, Jax was everything she could hope for in a partner. She tried to focus on the happiness and excitement her relationship brought her, Andi felt a warmth bloom in her heart every time she was with Jax. His energy was contagious, filling her days with laughter and a sense of lightness she hadn't felt in a long time.
She loved his spontaneity and the way he made even the smallest moments memorable—like surprising her with coffee on long workdays or planning last-minute adventures that made her feel alive. Andi felt truly seen and appreciated in his company; he asked about her projects, encouraged her when she was tired, and always made her feel valued. She was happier than she'd been in a long time, convinced she'd found someone who really understood her.
But then there was Kendall, he had become a best friend to her quickly over the months she'd gotten to know him. She had never had a friendship quite like this one. He was always there for her, and he understood her in a way she'd never experienced before. He made her laugh and pushed her out of her comfort zone in the best possible way. He was there for her when she needed him, and he always seemed to know when she was having a bad day, instinctively knowing how to cheer her up. His hugs were warm and comforting, and she always felt safe in his presence. They could talk for hours about anything and everything, and they always had fun together, no matter what they were doing. She had never felt so close to anyone before, and she treasured their friendship.
Yet, the more time they spent together, the more those confusing feelings began to resurface. She didn't want these feelings (right?), she was happy with Jax (right?) but something in her heart tugged toward Kendall in ways she hadn't expected. She kept telling herself it was natural to feel close to a friend like him; after all, they'd grown so close, and he was a safe space in her life. But every time his gaze lingered on hers a little too long or his hand brushed hers, it sent a spark through her that she wasn't sure she wanted to acknowledge.
Jax made her happy—she knew that. He brought a light into her life that she hadn't realized she needed, and she felt a genuine sense of excitement and joy with him. But as much as she wanted to focus solely on that, the little moments with Kendall wouldn't fade. They'd become more frequent, more intense, and she found herself questioning her own heart. Was she just overthinking? Or was there something she was missing?
Andi knew that eventually, she would have to confront these feelings, but for now, she kept pushing them aside, hoping that in time, they would fade. She reminded herself of how lucky she was to have Jax and the happiness he brought her, yet she couldn't shake the thought of Kendall and the warmth of his friendship that seemed to linger just a little too close to something deeper.
****
Andi and Jax are sitting in a cozy coffee shop, surrounded by friends. The atmosphere is lively, but Andi feels a slight disconnect as Jax scrolls through his phone, barely engaging in the conversation. If he did, it would just be a nod or a short sentence here or there, not much of a response. She glances around, trying to see what the others are talking about. They were having a fun time, they all were supposed to be having fun and hanging out.
But why did it feel like she was the only one putting in the effort with Jax? And why did it feel like he didn't care as much as she did? These aren't even her friends, they're his friends he had introduced her to finally a few weeks ago and he had asked if she wanted to go out with them. She only went because he wanted her to. If he wanted her to, he should at least show a bit of interest.
She tries to get his attention again, nudging his arm. "Hey, wanna go grab some food with me? I'm kinda hungry."
Jax finally looks at her, but he seems annoyed. "Why don't you go by yourself? I'm not that hungry."
She blinks, taken aback. Why is he being so short with her? She bites her lip, trying to keep her composure. "Oh, okay. Well, I'll be back in a few, then."
Jax nods and returns his attention to his phone. Andi can't help but feel frustrated and hurt. This isn't the first time Jax has acted distant or disinterested, and she doesn't understand why. She's done her best to be supportive and patient, but it feels like he doesn't care as much as she does, and it's starting to take a toll on their relationship. She knows she shouldn't compare their relationship to others, but it's hard not to when she sees how easily the couples around her seem to connect. They have fun, laugh, and genuinely enjoy each other's company. She tries to tell herself that her and Jax's relationship is different, that they have their own dynamic, but it's becoming harder to believe.
She takes a deep breath, reminding herself that relationships aren't perfect and everyone has their own way of showing affection. Maybe this is just Jax's way of expressing his feelings—after all, he's never been one to wear his heart on his sleeve. But the more she thinks about it, the more she realizes that his distance goes beyond that. He's become more detached over the past few weeks, rarely making an effort to spend time with her outside of their usual dates. He used to text her throughout the day and call her whenever he got the chance, but now, she feels like a last-minute thought. The texts become short answered, dates becoming less and less. It's frustrating and confusing, and she doesn't know what to do.
Andi heads into the bathroom and stares at herself in the mirror. She can't believe this is the same person she used to be—so confident and carefree. Now, she feels insecure and unsure, constantly second-guessing herself and her relationship, making sure to carefully tread the waters. She doesn't want to lose him, but at the same time, she's not sure if he's worth the effort anymore. Her heart ached at the thought and her nails dug into her palms, a habit she had grown over the past few weeks. It was one of the few ways she could release her frustration and confusion. She was torn between wanting to fix things and giving up.
She had invested so much time and energy into this relationship, but it was becoming clear that it wasn't going anywhere. The longer she stayed, the harder it would be to walk away. She had tried to bring up her concerns, but Jax always brushed them off or changed the subject. She took a deep breath and splashed some water on her face, trying to compose herself. She had to make a decision soon—she couldn't keep going on like this. Either she needed to give it her all and fight for the relationship, or she had to let go and move on.
But the decision wasn't easy. As much as she was hurt and frustrated, she still cared for Jax. He had been there for her in some of her hardest times, and became someone she grew to care deeply about. It was hard to give up on a relationship like that, especially when you've invested so much time and energy. But if it was meant to be, it would find a way. Though she couldn't be the only one putting in the effort. A relationship was a two way street. And she didn't want to waste her time with someone who didn't feel the same way.
"Are you okay?"
She jumps, startled by the sudden voice and jumps back from the sink, her gaze glancing down at her fists, holding back the grimace at seeing the creseant moons imprinted in her palms by her nails. She had been so lost in thought, she hadn't heard anyone come into the bathroom. She shoves her hands into her pockets, forcing a smile at the girl who was looking at her with concern. "Yeah, I'm fine...Just needed a moment."
The girl raises an eyebrow, looking unconvinced. "Are you sure? You seemed pretty upset. Did something happen?"
"Yeah, just...Relationship stuff, you know?" Andi shrugs, not wanting to get into it. The last thing she wants is to have a breakdown in the girls bathroom in a café in front of a stranger. "I'll be fine, but thanks."
"No problem, have a good day." The girl gave her a sympathetic smile before heading into one of the stalls. Andi sighed, staring at herself in the mirror once more. She had to figure out what to do about her relationship. If she wanted to fix things, she had to be willing to put in the effort. But if Jax didn't feel the same way, then it would be a waste of time.
Andi shook her head and took a deep breath, deciding to push the thought out of her head for the time being. She had come here to enjoy herself and hang out with her boyfriend. She couldn't let her thoughts consume her. With a final look at herself, she headed back out into the café. She didn't even bother to get something to eat. She lost her appetite.
As she walked back over to her boyfriend, she saw him now chatting with his friends, but he hadn't even glanced her way when she had approached the table. She had sat down and stared at him, waiting for him to look at her, but he didn't. Her heart dropped, her throat closing up and her stomach twisted. This isn't the first time he's done this. He would act like she wasn't there, like she didn't even exist. It hurt, and it made her feel like a ghost.
She felt her nails dig back into her palms, but she didn't even notice. The pain helped ground her. She swallowed the lump in her throat when she noticed him side glance at a girl and her friend who walked in. His eyes followed them, a look of interest and intrigue. It made her feel sick. Her nails dug deeper into her palm, she felt her jaw clench. He didn't even try to hide the fact that he was checking the girls out.
"Dude, don't be checking other girls out when you got yourself a beautiful girl right next to you." One of his friends spoke up, reaching over to hit the back of his head, causing his head to snap back.
His eyes narrowed. "Don't worry about it, bro. Andi knows I'm loyal. Right, babe?" He sent her a fake smile, placing his arm around her shoulders. She tensed at his touch, her body wanting nothing more than to jerk away. His arm around her didn't feel comforting or safe anymore. Her heart pounded against her chest, and she was sure he could hear it. Her jaw clenched, and she could feel the anger bubbling up inside her.
"Of course, Jax." She forced a smile, the lie feeling bitter on her tongue. He didn't deserve her loyalty. Not when he couldn't even show her the same respect. She didn't deserve this. She deserved better.
"That's my girl." He smirked, squeezing her shoulder. She felt her stomach turn, her nails digging even deeper into her palms. The pain grounded her, but she wanted to scream. She wanted to tell him off, to tell him how disrespectful he was being, but she didn't. She just sat there, seething in anger and pain. She had to get out of there.
She quickly stands up, the chair making a loud screeching noise, causing everyone to stare at her. "I, um, I'm gonna head home early. Not feeling that well. Great seeing you guys." She muttered before she turned and walked away, ignoring Jax's calls for her.
****
Andi stood in front of the mirror, adjusting her hair for the third time that morning. She wore a cute sundress that she knew Jax loved, and she could feel the butterflies dancing in her stomach. Today marked four months since they officially started dating, a milestone she had been eagerly anticipating. She had planned a sweet surprise for him—a picnic at their favorite park, complete with all his favorite snacks and a little gift she had picked out just for him.
As she finished getting ready, she glanced at her phone, half-hoping for a message from Jax. The clock ticked down, and her excitement began to tinge with a hint of anxiety. She shot him a quick text, reminding him about their plans later. A few minutes later, she received a reply that made her heart sink a little. Andi frowned at the screen, confusion settling in. She had reminded him about the date just a few days ago. She wished she didn't have to remind him of their four month anniversary though.
After a few more minutes, her phone finally buzzed again, but this time, the message was less than encouraging. She felt her heart drop as she read the words over and over, unable to process them. It didn't make sense.
A knock at the door to her apartment startled her out of her daze. She walked over to open it, knowing her mom was still at work at the studio, half-expecting to see Jax standing there with an apology and a bouquet of flowers. She can't help the frown and disappointment on her face when she didn't see him. Kendall stood there, his hands in the front pockets of his jeans with a smile on his face. Though it faltered at her expression.
"Wow, that excited to see me, huh?" He tried to joke, hoping to cheer her up. He never liked it when she was sad, it made him want to do anything he could to see her smile.
She forces a smile, leaning against the door. "Sorry, just thought you were someone else."
Kendall can't help the disappointment he feels, but he brushes it aside, not wanting to read too much into it. "Yeah, sorry I'm not your boyfriend. I can leave if you want."
Andi rolls her eyes at his teasing tone. "Shut up and get inside."
He chuckles and walks inside, taking a seat on the couch. She sits next to him, and he immediately notices her slumped posture and sad expression.
"Hey, what's wrong? Is everything okay?" Kendall asks, concern evident in his voice. "Isn't today your fourth month anniversary with Jax?"
Andi looks up at him, not being able to hide her surprise. Her eyes wide, and a small smile forming on her lips. How did he know that? "Yeah, it is...How did you know?"
Kendall shrugs, trying not to make a big deal out of it. "I pay attention. Plus, you've talked about it a lot, remember?"
Andi felt a warmth spread through her chest. Of course he would remember something like that. He always paid attention to her, and the fact that he cared enough to remember made her heart skip a beat. Realization crosses Kendall's face and he frowns. "Let me guess, he forgot?"
Andi bites her lip, avoiding his gaze. "He said something came up, and he had to work late."
Kendall scoffs, shaking his head. "You've got to be kidding me. Seriously?"
She shrugs, not wanting to make a big deal out of it. Even though that's exactly what she wants to do. She can't help but feel disappointed. "It's not a big deal, really. It's just a fourth month anniversary. It's not like a year or anything." She mumbled, trying to convince herself.
Kendall frowns, his brows furrowed. He can't believe this guy. How could he just blow her off like that? Kendall can't help the feeling of anger bubbling up inside him, knowing how much Andi had been looking forward to this. "You can't seriously be okay with this."
Andi sighs, leaning back against the couch. "I mean, I'm not, but it's not like I can do anything about it."
"Why not?" Kendall asks, frustration lacing his voice. He doesn't understand why she's letting Jax get away with this. She deserves so much better than this. "He should be here, spending time with you, celebrating your anniversary. You're his girlfriend, not some side chick."
Andi's jaw clenched at his words. "Don't say that, it's not his fault."
Kendall can't help the bitter laugh that escapes his lips. "Not his fault? Come on, Andi, don't defend him. You deserve better."
She swallowed hard, tears stinging the back of her eyes that she tried to ignore. He was right. he does deserve better. But she doesn't know what else to do. She cares about Jax, and she doesn't want to give up on their relationship. Kendall took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. He knows he needs to be patient with her, but it's hard. He wants her to see how much she's worth, and how Jax doesn't appreciate her. He wants her to be happy, and he hates seeing her so sad and hurt.
"I know you care about him, and you don't want to give up on him, but Andi, you can't keep letting him walk all over you." Kendall says softly, his voice full of sincerity. "You're an amazing person, and you deserve someone who will treat you right. Someone who will put you first, and celebrate every single day with you, because you're worth it. You're worth so much more than this."
Andi doesn't know what to say, her heart pounding in her chest. No one has ever spoken to her like this before, and she can't deny the feelings his words bring up in her. She wants to believe him, but she's not sure if she can. She's spent so long trying to convince herself that her relationship with Jax is worth it, and that he's a good person. But the more time goes on, the harder it becomes.
"Just think about it, okay? You don't have to do anything right now, but you deserve someone who will treat you like the amazing person you are. Don't settle for less, Andi. You deserve the best." Kendall reached over and squeezed her hand, his eyes meeting hers. She can see the sincerity and conviction in them, and she knows he means every word.
She swallows hard, nodding as she sniffles. "I'll think about it, I promise."
Kendall smiles, his thumb brushing her hand. "Good. Now, let's forget about that jerk and have some fun." He suggests, surprising her as he stands. "What?" He said at the look she gave him. "Ro-Ro, you've been cooped up here for hours, getting ready to surprise that idiot and now he's gone and left you hanging. How about we go do something fun instead? You deserve to enjoy yourself today."
Andi raises an eyebrow, a hint of a smile breaking through her frown. "What do you have in mind?"
Kendall's grin widens as he started pacing the room, brainstorming ideas. "Let's grab some ice cream, then we can hit that new arcade that just opened. I hear they have some awesome games. Plus, you can crush me at air hockey."
"I am better than you at air hockey." Andi couldn't help the smile widening at the thought. Kendall chuckles and rolls his eyes. They were both equally good at air hockey, he had just said that in hopes of cheering her up more. And it worked. Andi had to admit, the idea of spending time with Kendall felt refreshing, especially compared to the disappointment Andi felt earlier. "Okay, I don't wanna mope around here all night anyway. Let's go."
"That's the spirit!" Kendall said as he pulled her to her feet, his eyes bright with excitement.
That light was back in her eyes, the one he loved seeing, and the grin on her face was a nice change from the frown she had been wearing. He was glad he could bring her some joy and take her mind off her jerk of a boyfriend. He was going to make sure he did his best to make this the best night she could ever have. As they stepped out into the warm evening air, Andi felt a flutter of hope. Maybe this was the nudge she needed to reevaluate her relationship with Jax. And maybe, just maybe, she could find happiness outside of it. With Kendall by her side, she felt like anything was possible.
