Karan Sharma, he was never fortunate to have a good education in a prestigious university. He was born into a family with low income. In order to support his family, he dropped out of school in his 8th standard and started to do odd jobs such as selling small items like balloons or sweets, working in fruit stalls, offering to clean houses, shoe shining, cleaning cars the list goes on and on. He did all of this just so that his family had some food on their plates.

At 18, he stopped doing these odd jobs and decided to work in a garage as a mechanic. His boss was cruel and strict but he had a beautiful daughter who would help her father out in the garage on the weekends. Whilst his boss was horrible, his daughter....oh you all want to know her name? Okay then, the daughter was called Alisha. Anyway whilst the boss was horrible, Alisha was the sweetest soul alive. The garage would sell sweets and drinks to the customers in the shop section so Alisha on the weekends would come to the workers, offering them sweets and cold drinks. She took an interest in Karan. Karan did have some feelings for Alisha but he decided to put them in the bin because there was no way in hell would a middle class girl for a lower class guy who would go nights without eating.

But you can't just toss away feelings in the bin making it gone forever, feelings don't work like that. If feelings did work like that, I am sure we would have all saved ourselves some heartbreaks.

Alisha loved being around Karan so she would talk to him about his life experiences, she would sometimes offer to help him out with the mechanic work even though she didn't like to get her hands dirty, when they conversed she would twirl a strand of her hair, sometimes let out a flirtatious giggle. Karan soon got the message that she liked him and he soon realised that he never put his feelings in the bin in the first place.

They soon started dating, a few years passed and Karan was earning well and soon he asked his boss for Alisha's hand in marriage. Their love story pretty much went smoothly since his boss agreed.

Their marriage was a simple intimate ceremony. Only those close to the families came. Karan's boss paid for everything.

Now Karan was earning well, he was married to Alisha, 2 months later everyone was asking when the two would give the good news?

You may be wondering what good news? Basically everyone wanted to know when a small Karan or a small Alisha would come into this world.

Karan and Alisha were lucky in love, lucky in the terms of work but when conceiving a child, they were unlucky. Alisha got pregnant 4 months after their wedding but the child was miscarried. They tried again and they finished the 9 months long wait but on the day of the delivery, the child, a baby girl, was stillborn. A year later, Alisha was pregnant again and she delivered a child after 7 months but the child, a baby boy, died due to being premature. Two years later, they tried again...Alisha got into an accident so the child died in her womb.

Four failed opportunities to become parents and the accident led to the doctor saying that Alisha would never be able to conceive again. After grieving, the couple decided to adopt but very soon, a miracle happened......Alisha was pregnant once again but this time Alisha was scared. Scared that she would lose her child at birth or the baby would die before she and Karan would even meet him or her. But after visiting the doctor, she got to know news that would affect Karan.

Nine months later, news spread in the town that Alisha had given birth to a baby girl with fair skin, beautiful hazel eyes that reminded you of nature's beauty and tiny tufts of black hair. That wasn't the only news that was spread on 10th July 2000. The other news was that Alisha lost her life in childbirth. Alisha had a complicated pregnancy, she wasn't even supposed to conceive. It was a miracle that she managed to bear a child once again but the miracle came with bad news...only the mother or child could live. Alisha knew Karan loved her too much to let her go but she also knew how much Karan wanted a child so she chose the child's life over her own.

Karan was devastated but before Alisha left to live with God, she made him promise her that he would love their daughter with all his heart. He promised her and she closed her eyes forever.

He named her Gauri....Alisha always loved the name Gauri so he named her that. He wanted to name her Alisha since she looked a lot like her late mother but Alisha wanted Gauri so Gauri was the baby girl's name...

Now 20 years later, 8th January 2020 (and no, coronavirus does not exist here):

Karan: Gauri! I need to talk to you.

A young girl of 20 came down the stairs dressed in a simple half sleeved dark blue rayon kurti with some small white buttons in the middle of the kurti. She wore the kurti with dark blue leggings. The black hair was slightly wavy and casaded around her waist like midnight waves on a sandy beach. Her hazel eyes were dove shape and outlined with kajal. She painted her lips an apple red. Her ears carried golden jhumkas and there was one golden bangle on her left hand.

She was Gauri Kumari Sharma, the only daughter of Karan Sharma and the late Alisha Kumari Sharma.

Gauri: ji papa? Is everything okay?

Karan: voh Gauri, I have something to tell you.

Gauri: is everything okay at work?

After Alisha's death, her dad a.k.a Karan's boss kicked Karan out of the job so Karan got a job at another garage but that job was low pay. He managed though because he had a small daughter to educate and take care of. As Gauri grew up, she wanted things that her school friends had like the new Barbie dolls, teddy bears, cute dresses but Karan had to tell her no. It killed him to say no but the money was there for her education and for food on their plate and a roof over their heads. Gauri soon understood about their financial situation so she got help from the neighbour women to help her to make her own clothes and small toys. She was now attending community college.

Karan: well salary is still the same but I kind of want to talk to you regarding my job.

Gauri: tell me.

She said this as she sat down on the small dining table, getting two glasses and filling them up with the water jug. She gave one to her dad and she took some sips of her own glass.

Karan: I am thinking of quitting my job.

Gauri stopped drinking and said: what? Why dad?

Karan: my friend suggested a business opportunity for me.

Gauri: business opportunity?

Karan: yeah. My friend told me that he is going to Dubai and he is giving me an opportunity to go with him and hopefully gain a better life for me, for you. Gauri, community college is okay yeah but a better university or college will help you in life. I don't want you to be like me, working day and night. I rarely can spend time with you so that's why, with whatever time I got left...

Gauri interrupting: papa, please don't talk about death.

Karan: okay I won't. But it's never too late to start again. I am going to Dubai for you.

Gauri: how can you even go to Dubai? You don't have a passport.

Karan: I do.

Gauri: since when?

Karan: way before you was born, papaji made me a passport for if I ever wanted to go abroad. I got it renewed a couple of times so...

Gauri: do you have to go? Am I coming with you? I don't have a passport.

Karan: Gauri, you're not coming.

Gauri: but why? Where will I go?

Karan: I was thinking about leaving you with the neighborhood women but turns out my friend is friends with my childhood friend Tej Singh Oberoi. Now my friend is going to Dubai but Tej isn't and he offered for you to stay at his place. I said no a thousand times but he wasn't taking no for an answer. So in a couple of weeks, I will be in Dubai and you will be in Mumbai.

Gauri: Mumbai? As in the city Mumbai?

Karan: as in the city Mumbai, yes.

Gauri: what about college?

Karan: I will be filling out some forms, hopefully you can get through the sports quota.

He said that only because Gauri played on her college basketball team. She may be only 5 foot 3 but she could dribble, guard and shoot hoops easy.

Gauri just sighed and gave her father a smile, saying: well I wish you good luck papa. I know you are going to succeed.

Karan gave her a smile and hugged his daughter. Gauri hugged him back, not wanting to let go.

...

Two weeks later:

Today was the day that Karan would be going to Dubai and Gauri would be going to Mumbai. She had heard so much about Mumbai, after hearing so much about the grand city that tourists love to visit, she had came to the conclusion that Mumbai was the city that could make or break dreams.

Her father's friend Tej had ordered his driver to come and pick him and Gauri up from their small town. After bidding bye to everyone in the town, the driver came and the father-daughter duo went in the car with the driver putting their suitcases in the trunk.

Karan had sorted out his passport and other stuff, he also managed to get Gauri admission in a decent university via sports quota. Gauri was kinda upset to leave the small town she grew up in, she had made so many wonderful friends and now she was leaving them for God knows how long.

But who knew that in Mumbai, she would meet a very special friend?

Soon they reached Mumbai then they reached a pearly white mansion. Gauri looked at that mansion in surprise...she had never seen a mansion in her whole life like in real life, she had seen mansions on TV but never in actual real life. She saw a middle aged man, not much older than her own dad, dressed in a really expensive suit smiling. Next to him was a middle aged woman, dressed in an expensive sari and she was also smiling. Karan and Gauri got out, going up to the couple whilst the driver got out of the car and opened the truck for Gauri's suitcase.

Karan: Tej, thanks once again for letting Gauri stay here.

Tej: it is no problem Karan. I owe it to you, you saved my life years ago. The least I can do is look after Gauri.

Gauri: papa, you saved Tej uncle's life?

Karan: voh, we had this lakeside and it was very popular. I was 9 and Tej was also 9. He visited the lakeside and decided to swim.

Tej: I can't swim and I was an idiot for going into that lake but if I hadn't, I wouldn't have met your dad. I nearly drowned, your dad was at the lakeside, he saw and saved me. Ever since then, we became friends but we lost in touch.

Karan: and now we are in touch again.

The men laughed as the woman in the sari continued to smile and Gauri gave a proud smile.

Tej: do come in Karan.

Karan: I can't. I need to go. We need to pick up Mihir.

Tej: aww, well good luck for Dubai.

Karan: thank you.

Gauri: good luck papa.

Karan hugged his daughter, kissing the top of her head then went in the car. Gauri waved bye to him as the car started to move. She then went with Tej and his wife.

Once they reached inside the mansion, the wife turned to her and said: hi I am Jhanvi aunty. Do you want anything to eat or drink?

Gauri shook her head, Jhanvi stroked Gauri's silky hair and said: finally another girl in the house. I get so tired being around men all day.

Gauri: you don't have a daughter?

Jhanvi: sadly no, I do have....

She couldn't complete her sentence since yelling was suddenly heard. It sounded like a man.

Man: I AM GOING TO KILL YOU!

Then another man was heard.

Man 2: I only did it because I care for you meri pyaar O.

Man 1: care for me, my foot!

Gauri saw two men running down the stairs. One man looked like he was going to die whereas the other man looked like he was going to actually kill.

Jhanvi: boys, calm the hell down! You two aren't children anymore!

The two didn't listen as they continued to run around the mansion. Gauri was just amused by this...they had to be siblings, this is how siblings act right? I mean she didn't know since she never had any. She had four older siblings in heaven though.

Jhanvi: talk this out! Don't do these childish antics!

Yet again they didn't listen, one man passed through Gauri but the other man accidentally bumped into her. Gauri lost her balance due to this and nearly fell when that man held her firmly by the waist.

The moment he held her, she locked eyes with him. His eyes, so black and deep, like a bottomless well. They were dragging her in, those eyes of his, and she could see the coffee beans that were her eyes falling under that dark well.
