8 Rabbit Hole
POV Jack
Whispers, that’s all I can hear while I’m sitting on a gigantic head made from rock. They’re having some sort of intervention meeting. About me, yeah. I’m a screw up right now. My fingers are twitching eagerly around my wooden staff while I wait. At some points they even argue and once in a while one of them glances at me and I do a fake smile as a respond.
Who am I talking about? Well, about the guardians of course. Only one silent is her, the Protector of them all who is also known as the Maiden of the Moon. Actually is kind of funny, in it’s sad and twisted way. Funny because of why? Well, let me tell you. Maiden of the Moon is actually my first crush who looks like my late wife and my head is now all messed up because of that fact.
I mean, heck. She was always there in my childhood, in my dreams, telling me that everything is going to be alright and better. How I should aim towards my deepest wishes and never give up. She gave me courage and guided me through my nightmares. I developed feelings towards her and then I saw her, only once before it was my 18th birthday. Then she vanished, puff, just like that and I was alone. I forgot how she looked like, haha, actually I forgot everything when I helped out a little girl. She was the girl that I fell deeply in love with when she grew up. Then I married her, ended up with kids and was it happily ever after? Nah, she died of old age. Did I mention that I died too? Well, now I did.
“If we soak it long enough it will be white again!” Bunnymund said in excitement and I sighed. “Oh dear, I doubt that. We need to figure out something else to get him back the way he was,” Toothiana laughed nervously. I turn my back at them and I roll my eyes. My legs were tightly against my chest as I lifted my staff in front of me. There’s no magic left, practically I’m not a Guardian anymore.
I reached my hand behind my back and I pulled my hood on. “Shut up,” I muttered and they ignored me. I buried my head on my knees and I embraced myself. Then I felt a gentle touch on my shoulder and I lifted my head up. There she is, looking at me and smiling.
“Jack,” she started, “what are you thinking?” My heart wanted to scream from pain but I said that nothing is wrong. How could I tell her that I’m doubting of her existence, how my center is damaged and I just wish that they would give up.
She sat next to me and pulled her legs against her chest. “Mind if I sit here.. Frosty?” She said with a slight amount of playfulness in her voice. She glanced at me and smiled slyly. “So.. who are you?” I whispered for my surprise.
Her laughter was something that made even the Guardians to stop their argument of how to fix me. Last subject was to send me into circus to have a fun experience. “I’m Maiden of the Moon, the Protector of the Guardians. Other than that I’m still searching of my identity,” she smiled and took my hand.
My laughter was shallow, “Is that so?” Then she glanced at me and my cheeks warmed up a bit. “You kissed me a while ago in a dream,” she whispered and I blinked my eyes. “I haven’t dreamt about you,” I murmured.
She leaned against me and her fingers laced up with mine. “What rope are you trying to pull Maiden?” I said strictly and she hummed. “You were human back then, Jack,” she smiled and my heart skipped a beat.
“So what?” I groaned and stood up. She also stood up and fixed up her dress a bit. “I also remember my feelings towards you, Winter’s heart,” she said and jumped down from the rock head. My eyes follow her as she walks away.
“Where are you going?” I asked quickly. “Oh but Mr. Frost, you’ll always find me,” she giggled and went inside one of the numerous rabbit holes in Bunny’s island. My breathing became fast and my eyes were moving rapidly while I remembered something. “I will always find her.. I will always find you,” I said quietly and my heart ached.
“Elsa!” I yelled and jumped down from the rock head. Toothiana smiled warmly when I passed her and other Guardians when I went after the Maiden of the Moon. My walk was slower when I reached the hole where she went. I practically sneaked inside and my heart was racing.
Then I heard her, she was laughing to some small walking eggs that Bunnymund has for Easter. She saw me and I took a step backwards, “S-sorry I will—. “ I mumbled but she asked me to stay.
She walked to me and took my left hand. “Your wedding ring?” She asked and her fingers touched the smooth surface of the ring. I nodded my head without saying anything and she smiled when she placed her left hand in my hands. “My Moon, My Star. That’s what is written on the inside Jack,” her eyes were sparkling when she said it.
It truly was the ring that I did for my wife when I proposed to her. “This is not a dream?” I whispered and she embraced me. “No it’s not. I still don’t remember everything but.. I remember loving you,” her voice sounded as soft as her hair that was touching my cheek.
“You will be alright Jack, I promise,” she smiled and kissed my cheek. “Let’s have some fun,” she grinned and pulled my hood from my head. Before I could do a thing she was tickling me. “Stop!” I shouted as we fell on the ground.
“No way Frost!” She chuckled and tickled my armpits. “I don’t tickle!” I said with high voice. She ignored me and continued. Then I smirked mischievously and she gasped from surprise when I turned us around in a way that I ended up sitting in top of her. “You’re the one who tickles,” I chuckled and tickled her. She laughed a lot.
We were both panting afterwards and the moment got me. Almost simultaneously we ended our laughter and we were watching each other. “Jack?” She whispered and I hummed. “What’s wrong?” She asked and I smiled faintly. “You know.. before this thin that we did now, well, it was one of the things that made me fell in love with you once,” I said .
She blushed and turned her head away. “Yeah, you don’t remember,” I said with the words sounding bitter. “Wait,” she pleaded and her hand grabbed on my sleeve. “What?” I said and shook her hand away.
“Do you love me?” She asked and I look at her. “Well, I don’t know if you’re really her.. Elsa I mean because Manny has his strange ways,” I sighed and gave her a faint smile. “We will figure it out,” I told her and she nodded her head.
Again she pulled my sleeve when I tried to get up. “Can I try something?” She asked shyly and I nodded my head. She lifted herself a bit so she was holding herself up with the help of her elbows. Her left hand cupped my cheek and she leaned closer. “Are you going to?” I asked but she hushed me and closed her eyes. I did the same and soon I felt her lips against mine.
My arms went behind her back and after our kiss I held her close to me. “I’m afraid,” I whispered to her ear as I embraced her. “What are you afraid of?” She asked and her fingers went through my hair. “That if I let go, you might disappear,” my voice broke down and I buried my head against her hair. “What if Manny wants you to go,” I said and felt a lump inside my throat.
She chuckled and her fingers were constantly brushing my hair, “I have my own will Jack. You don’t have to let go of me.” When I watch her she surprises me, she’s much stronger now and secure. It makes me kind of happy, to see her like this. “Why are you smiling?” She grinned and pinched my cheek. “I’m smiling because you’re here and so strong, beautiful. I’m the weak one now,” I laughed a bit bitterly.
Her French braid waved in the air as she shook her head. Her rosy lips narrowed and she frowned a bit. “Frost, you just need to have some fun and then you’ll be yourself again,” then she smiled and I rolled my eyes. “How? Kids are not believing in me anymore, I can’t use my wind or winter powers and I just don’t feel like having fun,” I shrugged. She glanced at me and brushed her away from her face.
Suddenly she broke the silence, “We need to see the trolls.” I raised my eyebrows, “Your sisters parents-in-law?” I gulped. “My sisters?” She whispered and I bit my lower lip. “Anna, you do remember her?” I asked and she shook her head. Yeah, she’s like me. Nicely done Manny, first you screwed my head with the help of Winter Spirit and now my late wife’s head. Great, just perfect.
“How are we going to go there anyway? This thing is useless,” I mumbled and threw my staff on the ground. She picked it up and placed it on her shoulder. “Don’t give up so easy, try to have some fun.. we have an idea,” she grinned and took my hand. From inside the rabbit hole we went back to outside and there were all the Guardians waiting for us.
Just when I was about to ask what are they all waiting for I heard the sound of bells ringing somewhere far but I noticed how the sound was getting louder and louder. When I turned around I saw a sleigh flying towards us. Elsa glanced at me and smiled. “We are going on a ride Frostie,” she said and kissed my cheek when she passed me.
The reindeers were digging the ground with their hooves. “Oh c’mon! Mate, their ruining my place,” Bunnymund whined to North who went to head reindeer, Rudolf, then patting it’s back. Rudolf huffed and glared at Bunnymund who closed his mouth and pouted, crossing his arms and tapping his foot on the ground.
“You two should get going,” North said and opened the door to inside of his sleigh. “I guess that Jack can drive?” He glanced at me and smiled. The suggestion made me a bit surprised but I shrugged and told him that I can do it. My hands took the leash and I went inside the sleigh and Elsa sat on the back.
Then North frowned, “No stupid stunts Frost since you--.” He said but I interrupted him with my groaning. “Because I can’t fly?” I snapped and he nodded. “Yeah, I promise to not to do crazy stunts,” I muttered and then I asked the reindeer’s to fly.
Elsa threw a snow globe as we flew into the sky and then we went through the portal. I look down and I see that we’re closing to Arendelle. I look at her quickly, she is sitting behind of me and looking at the view with innocent look. Then she notices me looking at her and she flashes a smile which caused me to turn around again.
“You really think that the trolls might know the solution?” I asked from her and she hummed. “Yes Jack, they may. Manny has told me great things about them, they know a lot even though they might be a bit.. different type of people. They know a lot of treating different conditions, they might know how to help you,” she said with warmth in her voice.
“Well, we’re here,” I said when I saw an opening in the middle of the forest. There was a small river that circled around some rock. The river was running smoothly and was a lot calmer compared to my heart when she placed her hand on my shoulder. She came to look over my shoulder as I ordered the reindeer’s to take us down.
When we landed we left the sleigh near the tree line as we went to an open area. Normal eye can’t see them, not until they want you to see them. Trolls are shy creatures that look at you first before showing you their true form. Before that they just appear as large rocks with plants growing out of them. Now they had done enough of their supervising of us as the rocks started to shake and roll towards us.
Elsa laced her fingers with mine when she took my hand. “Hello Papi,” I smiled to the leader of the trolls. “Long time no see Jack,” Papi smiled and then looked at Elsa. “Same goes for you too Queen Elsa of Arendelle or should I say.. Maiden of the Moon?” My jaw dropped and I stare at Elsa. She seems calm when she kneels down and patted the trolls head.
“We would like to know what’s wrong with him?” She looks at me and I was pulled to ground by two female trolls or I think that they were females. Papi approached me and touched my forehead, “He has lost his powers. Jack, when you accepted your role as a Guardian there are consequences if children are not believing in you anymore. You remember?” He looked me from top to down and I sighed.
Then I pulled myself away and sat on the ground. “Yeah I remember. Bunny became a small rabbit back then, North became old and weak, Toothiana suffered from it too I whispered.. So I lost my abilities to bring winter and use the wind? And got black hair instead?” I look at Papi who shakes his head, then he comes to me and points my chest.
“You’re heart has a dark crust Jack. It is concealed by darkness and fears that have crystallized on top of your heart. Yes you have lost your abilities but to bring them back you need your core back.. And your core comes from your heart, if you cannot have fun you can’t get the children to believe in you again. Open up again and you might be saved but you need to hurry or that crust will slowly be your whole heart. Then it’s impossible to bring you back and you’re just shallow being that’s only good for Pitch’s doings,” he said and looked at me with sadness and pity in his eyes.
My hand went through my hair and messed it up. Fun? Could I experience it again? Then I felt a pair of hands coming from behind of me and going around my waist. A gentle embrace was comforting me and I felt a warm chin on my shoulder. “Let’s go and get you fixed up,” Elsa whispered to my ear.
“You’re just doing this because you’re now the Protector,” I sighed and stood up. Her embrace was broken but she didn’t deny it. “See, I’m just your job now,” I told her. Papi took my hand in his. “Jack, the Winter Spirit and you are sealed now but I’m sure that with her help it’s going to be fixed and kneel down son,” he smiled and pulled me down before I could respond.
Papi laughed a bit and I glanced at him. What is so funny now? “She waited you to remember, twice and you did. Maybe she will too?” He said and lifted his other eyebrow. I look behind of me and see Elsa laughing when a couple of troll children are pulling her dress and she crouched down. Her hands were moving in circles and she grinned in excitement when she created snow. The troll children were laughing and catching the falling snowflakes.
I smiled faintly and look back at Papi, “I hope that she will. It would be amazing to have her back.” My throat felt dry and I wiped my tearing eyes to my sleeve. “She will be as happy to remember, I’m sure,” Papi said and slapped his hands together. “So how about you two going to Arendelle to see the new rulers?” Papi shouted out and Elsa nodded her head.
“B-but,” I mumbled but it was no use. Papi told us that the odds of Arendelle believing in me was the highest since there had always been stories of me existing. We set off the North’s reindeer and then we traveled towards the mountains. Elsa was running forward and laughing while I walked after her. She had forced me to carry my staff with me. She used her trick of making a sad face on me. Did it work? Well, it most certainly did.
My feet hit on a branch and I almost tripped over. “Stupid trees,” I muttered and then I stepped over it. When I lifted my eyes from the ground I couldn’t see Elsa anywhere. “Els?” I yelled and run forward.
WOOSH!
I fell to ground and I’m coughing. Then I wiped off the fresh snow from my face and I see Elsa laughing in front of me. She just threw a snowball at me when she jumped in front of me from behind a tree. At first I pouted but then I smiled a bit. “Need a hand?” She gave me a sly smile as she took support from her knees when she bended over me. “Yeah,” I said and grabbed the hand that she offered. She pulled me up and smiled as she brushed the snow away from my shoulders.
“Let’s go forward, we have some way to go before we are in a good spot for to built up our shelter for the night,” she smirked and turned around. Now I knew that she was planning on something.
“We need to catch up in things that happened when I was gone,” she said quietly when we were in the base of the mountain. “You sure that you want to know?” I said with curiosity and she smiled. “Yes Jack, it might be hard but I need to know so I have a chance to remember it all,” then she stopped and opened up her arms. “Perfect!” She shouted in excitement.
My other hand was stuffed inside to my hoodie’s pocket as I went to stand next to her. “Perfect for what?” I wanted to know and she then stomped her foot on the ground. I jumped back when there was a floor forming from ice. Then the walls were forming and climbing towards the sky. Everything that was appearing before me had lots of details, frosted designs and shimmer.
“Whoa,” I sighed in awe as I looked around me. Then I run to a pair of doors that I saw, she crossed her arms in front of her and followed me. “You’re liking it?” She chuckled as I look over the balconys edge. “You just built a castle.. again,” I gasped and she giggled a bit. “You bet that I like it!” It was more of work of art than a castle made of ice.
“We should rest,” she whispered and I heard her walking away. For a moment I watched the forest at the moon lighting the sky. Then I decided to go to bed even though I’m not a fan of sleeping anymore. That’s the thing that I hate the most.
I laid down but my body was refusing to fall asleep. Many times I turned around to turn back around again. However I preferred to lay on my right side because then I could see her sleeping just a couple of feet away from me. Then I did my ritual of turning to other direction and turning back again to find out that she was looking at me. “Can’t sleep?” She whispered and I bit my lower lip while I nodded.
She crawled closer to me on the floor where she had done mattresses with pure and soft first snow. “Come here,” she whispered and now she was right next to me. She placed my head against her chest and she started to sing a lullaby. My eyes were closing up slowly as she sang with her calming and beautiful voice. Little by little her voice was sounding more blurred and from faraway as my mind was falling asleep.
A/N:
Elsa needs her memories! What is your guess of how she might get them back?
