2 The Moon Cave
(POV third person)
The moon was lightening a single cave in the land of eternal frost and ice. This night was no different, she was dancing on the place called Moon lake. The Moon lake was a place of magic where the moon shone during nights from a whole on the caves ceiling. The cave itself had walls covered with shining ice and frost roses.
When the wind blew through the cave it made the ice spikes hanging from the ceiling jingle like sweetest music. That was the music which she used for her dance, every night. The starry sky made the clear blue water shine like diamonds. Each step of hers made the water freeze beneath her feet.
No mere mortal has never found the place of mystery, the place of legends. Neither do the Guardians or other fairy tale characters have ever found the source of all the Moon’s magic, the home of the Maiden of the Moon.
Maiden of the Moon has been living in the cave as long as she can remember, her only friends are the winter fairies, creatures similar to Tooth fairy’s little fairies but also different. These little fairies were once created by the Spirit of Winter, before the time of Jack Frost. Their nature was mischievous and playful, much similar to the man who later became the Spirit of Winter, Jack Frost.
“Maiden,” a dreamlike voice calls from the Maiden who wishes her fairy friends good evening. “Yes Manny?” The Maiden smiles and looks up towards the moon. “Time for your last visit to him,” Moon whispers and the Maiden nods.
The Maiden knew what Manny was speaking of. Each night she visited a certain person’s dreams. She had done it ever since he lost hope as a boy, now he was a young man. The Maiden was there to guide and protect the dreams of the strongest. Normally she guarded the dreams of the Guardians but this person was an exception, Manny told her that he had something in him.
When the Maiden waved her hand in the air a bed of snow appeared. She was the daughter of the Moon, a child of Winter. She placed herself on the bed and started to dream. She could dream through time and space, now she was searching for specific dream and she found it.
“Where are you!” Someone was already yelling and now she walked steadily forward, staying in the shadows that the moon like light did. “I am here,” she whispered gently and someone was running forward. “Don’t exhaust yourself,” she laughed as the young man rushed towards her. He laughed, “I thought that you would not show up!”
“That is close enough,” the Maiden’s gentle voice spoke. The guy sat on the floor and chuckled. “I missed you,” the guy spoke and swayed himself to lay on the floor. “What should I dream of today?” He smiled and was glancing at the Maiden. He had never saw her but he could just imagine her smiling right now.
“You’re quiet today?” The guy laughed warmly and ruffled his messy brown hair. “I am sorry, you know that tomorrow is your 18th birthday,” the Maiden said with a trace sadness on her voice. “I know, so let’s make this night worth remembering,” then the boy closed his hazelnut brown eyes and hummed a tone.
“What is that song?” The Maiden asked. “You sang that to me, on the first night when you came to my dream. When I was having nightmare on my first night ever in the hospital. Don’t you remember?” He sit and looked towards the shadows. He wished that she would show herself.
“Could you sing it tonight?” He asked and his eyes were shining from excitement. The Maiden laughed, “If you really want that.” The brown haired young man nodded. Then she started to sing of how it feels to let go, when you don’t have to think what everyone else thinks.
They stayed in silence for a while after. “I know the dream I would like to have,” the guy suddenly whispered. “What would that be?” The Maiden smiled and looked at the excited young man. She had known him for years now. He was scared before, scared of death. Now he knew that he could live fully as long as possible. Joy was filling her heart.
“Just watch!” The guy laughed and she felt her heart beating fast when the blank space started to adjust to his feelings. She taught him that, that dreams can be controlled and be done the way he wants. She saw now how there was snow raining down, how the earth got covered in it.
She watched how the guy smirked when stars were appearing on the sky. Then she saw the Moon. “You know what else I dream of?” The guy laughed and she started to watch him. “What?” She laughed.
Now she was watching when he was moving his hands in the air, as if he was molding something. She saw how he was creating a snowball from thin air and for some reason her heart was acting crazy. Then he blew on it and his brown eyes were shimmering in the starlight. “You ready?” He yelled and before she could say a thing the snowball was flying towards her.
She waved her hand in the air and the snowball exploded into ice crystals.
WHOOSH.
Now she felt how someone was holding her, arms around her gently. “I also dream of flying,” he whispered to her ear and gave a warm kiss to her lips. She tried to push him aside but he embraced her, “I will miss you.” He whispered and then watched her.
Suddenly the Moon was showing light on the Maiden. He saw her rosy lips, her ice blue beautifully shining eyes and the platinum blonde hair of hers for few seconds. He never knew what she looked like until now, he had only seen her silhouette which was the most graceful of all time but the reality. The reality was even more better.
“Let me go,” she whispered and he let her go. Slowly he backed up, “I.. I am sorry, I don’t know what went into me.” He whispered sadly, he knew that he would not see her next night. She had told him that the night before his 18th birthday would be the last visit of hers.
“Don’t worry and I will miss you too,” she whispered to him and was smiling sadly. “You will live your life and accomplish great things,” she said to him and he gave her a sly smirk. “You think so?” He sounded happy and she hummed. “I am certain of it, just listen to your heart,” she whispered and looked up. She was watching the moon who was already giving her signs to go.
“Time for you to go, I guess?” He sounded sad and moved restlessly. The aching heart of his was now growing bigger. He would miss her, the person who taught him that life, even though a shorter one, would be worthwhile if you do it worthwhile.
“Yes,” she said simply and looked at the young man who was swallowing his tears. She felt pity for him and even her heart had started to cherish him. She turned around and started to walk away.
“WAIT!” He yelled and she stopped. “Do you stop believing in the moon when the sun comes up? I don’t.. I will always believe in you! I will find you again!” He yelled while crying and the Maiden’s heart was aching.
“You are My Moon! My Star!” He yelled again. She turned around, “What’s your name?” She whispered and the guy ruffled his hair and smiled. “Name is Jack, Jack Overland. And you are?” He looked at the Maiden, wishing to know her name. The Maiden was thinking but she couldn’t remember her name.”Just call me Your Moon and I will know,” she whispered and Jack blushed.
“Goodbye Jack,” she said and rushed her steps. Her aching heart would soon cause her to cry aloud which she didn’t want him to see. “We will see one day! My Moon!” Jack yelled after her and smiled.
Maiden was slowly waking up in the cave. “Manny, why did I have to leave him?” She whispered and looked up towards the Moon which was blocked by clouds. She knew that she could never meet him again, she had to travel back through many decades to reach him and his dreams. She wonders how he was after her last visit, what were his thoughts.
“Maiden, there is a reason. There is someone in this time needing for your guidance. A Guardian,” Manny spoke to her and she nodded. “What will I do?” she whispered. “Travel to South Pole and you will find him,” she heard Manny telling. She narrowed her eyes, “But how?” She whispered, she was feeling confused. “The fairies will lend you their powers of wind, you will go in reality this time,” Manny spoke and the fairies were now creating strong winds beneath her, making her body float. She was ready to have something else in her mind right now.
In the past Jack was slowly waking up, he had his alarm turned on early each morning. After taking his medication he rushed downstairs to cook breakfast for his parents and little sister. His sister was just three years old and he loved her really much.
He did American style breakfast, pancakes, bacon and eggs. When his family joined for breakfast he was glancing at his father, “Dad.. you know.” He started carefully and his father put down the newspaper, “Youp kiddo?” His father laughed and smirked.
“I would love to be a carpenter. I heard that in Norway is the best teacher,” he said his business carefully. He knew that it would be hard for his parents to let him go when they knew that he was dying in few years before turning 25 years old. “Son, you could just follow your dad and become a jewelry maker.. we have talked about this?” His father Matthew sighed and Jack pouted.
“Dad, I love doing jewelry but my dream is to work with wood. And.. to be honest I feel like I need to be in this kingdom of Arendelle,” Jack sighed and did his best puppy eye look to his father. His father sighed, “Well you’re eighteen today. I can’t hold you back but just wait until you’re about 21? Alright? So your mom won’t freak out,” his father laughed and Jack yelled in excitement.
“Calm down you two or his heart fails!” Jack’s mother Holly came to breakfast holding little Emma, Jack’s sister in her lap. “Sorry dear,” Matthew chuckled. Jack grinned and went to get Emma to his arms, “Guess what little one! Your brother will go to Norway one day!” Jack laughed in excitement.
Emma was giggling while Jack spinned her around in air. He could hear his parents whispering to each other. “Well.. he just needs to find a nice girl in here and he won’t want to go,” his mother sighed. Jack stopped spinning. “Mom, I’ve told you. I don’t feel like having a girlfriend and it would not be fair to her.. you know, with final goodbyes and stuff,” Jack sighed and he immediately felt bad when he saw her mother tearing up. “Mom, don’t freak out,” Jack sighed and gave her mother a hug. “I am doing fine, let me just live, please,” Jack whispered and her mother nodded.
After having breakfast Jack run to his room and took out his carving gear. He was now carving a profile. It was going to be done from how he remembers her, the Maiden of the Moon. With all of his heart he was creating her profile, her silhouette from wood. While he still remembers her, how she looked for the few seconds that he saw her. He touches his lips and closes his eyes, he managed to kiss her. It was now his favorite dream of all, he loved winter and he loved her. In one dream he had get both, her and the power of winter.
He chuckled when he did the first carve on the wood. She was there for him when he was most scared and now he wishes that he can handle life without her. She was his joy, she made him feel safe and eventually his affection towards her grew into love. Love that could never happen but what he dreams of.
