Love Doesn't Have To See
Ian's lying on the bed. The hospital bed. His head is bandaged round the eyes and I can see dark patches where dried blood has pooled beneath the layers closest to the sockets. I remember how that driver pulled out of nowhere. It wasn't our fault, it was his. He'd been driving drunk. I remember the car flipping over, how my world turned upside down. I see in my mind's eye the glass shattering, Ian's shades cracking and snapping in half, the dark glass in the lenses flying into his eyes. I remember my vision flickering and Ian hitting his head hard on the dashboard, passing out. Then my vision went black and I woke up here with a broken rib and whiplash in my neck. Ian didn't get off so lightly. It tore me apart to sit here unable to help him, watching his chest rise and fall as he breathed; already having heard the doctor's verdict. I hoped for his sake he'd never wake up. His eyes had been operated on and the glass removed, but he'd never see properly again. He was at least 90% blind now. I hug my knees to my chest, careful not to press against my broken rib or move my neck too much. I reach out and take Ian's hand. I can't kiss him as I'd like to as there's a nurse in the room. "You'll be ok Ian," I whisper. "I promise I'll always stay beside you. You won't be alone in the darkness." The nurse heard and smiled slightly. "I can leave if you want." I blink my crooked eyes. "You don't have to; he's still unconscious." The nurse laughed. "I don't mind." She leaves the room and closes the door quietly behind her. I get up and go over to Ian. I lean down to him and press my lips softly to his. To my surprise and relief, he starts kissing back. I draw away and I see him start to panic. "D-Derp! What's going on?! W-Why can't I see?!" I stroke the side of his face with the back of my hand, tears stinging at my eyes. "Shh, it's ok Ian. I can explain." He reaches up to his eyes, trying to pry the bandage off his face. Sadly, I let him. I peel back the last layer and that's when the realisation kicks in. His milky white eyes stare up at me in horror. "I-I can't see properly!" I fight back the tears. "I know Ian, I know." I rest my forehead on his and gaze into his faded blue eyes. "How much can you see?" He lays his hand on the side of my face, tears welling up in his near-blind eyes. "I-I can see your eyes. And your face...that's all." I kiss him softly on the lips. "That's enough for me." He smiles but I can see the misery in his eyes still. I kiss his nose and he closes his eyes. "Are you ok, did the crash hurt you too?" I nod slightly. "I got a broken rib from when I fell into the door handle on my side and whiplash in my neck from when the car hit the barrier and my seatbelt jerked me forward." He opens his eyes and mine well up in tears when I see the blindness in his now. I kiss him again, wanting to console him any way I can. He wipes the tears from my eyes and kisses me back. "When can we go home?" I kiss his neck. "In a few days. They have to put some stuff on your eyes and do a last check-up on me. Then we can go home." He nods and closes his eyes. "I'm tired Derp." I lie down on the bed beside Ian and wrap my arms round him. "You won't be alone in the dark Ian. I'm here for you." He smiles and turns his head, kissing me on the lips. "I love you." "Love you too. Now get some sleep, I'll be right here beside you, love." He snuggles up to me and sighs gently. "Ok."
