'Catch me if you Can!'
Ravenpaw's POV (Warriors universe)
The sound of rushing water filled my ears, as I crept along the riverbank on that bordered RiverClan. The pile of rocks known as Sunningrocks drew closer, and as my paws stepped onto the smooth boulders, I noticed the dimming sky and setting sun that sent streaks of pink and purple throughout the darkening clouds.
I quickly hopped from the rocks, racing into the trees that bordered the clearing. As soon as I entered the familiar woods, the strong smell of my Clanmates, as well as the area dimming even more. I skidded through the trees, passing the Dusk Patrol who had recently left camp. "Ravenpaw?" Graypaw, who was within the patrol, along with some other cats I didn't have time to recognize.
Just as I passed them, I skidded down a steep hill, tumbling into camp with a loud huff as I collapsed onto my belly. Firepaw hurried over, meowing, "Are you alright?". I quickly scrabbled to my paws, tail fuzzing out. Firepaw smiled softly, following me to the Freshkill-Pile.
"Why'd you fall?" the ginger cat questioned, tail waving as he crouched down beside the pile of prey. "No reason." I mumbled, not very hungry. "I'm heading to my nest.." I paused a moment to yawn, "I'm tired. I had the Dawn Patrol, and didn't sleep good." Without waiting for my friend to respond, I quickly trotted over to the patch of ferns that surrounded the apprentice's nests.
Dustpaw glanced at me, laying in his own nest across from mine, beginning to eat a mouse. I locked eyes his him for a moment, us both staying silent as I tore away my gaze and laid down in my bed of moss. As the sky dimmed, my vision went fuzzy as I closed my eyes and drifted into sleep.
I awoke in a strange, dark version of ThunderClan camp, shuffling out of the den and looking around. Everything looked gray and empty, making my heart pound and my fur rise. "Uh, hello? Graypaw, Firepaw?" I called out, pushing my ears back as I frantically looked around, scared.
"Hi there!" a chirpy voice caught my attention, making me look around for the source. I soon found what had made the noise, which was a strange-looking greenish-brown rabbit, with a sharp-toothed gaping smile and strange gray things connecting it's limbs. I stared wide-eyed at the terrifying creature, which stood on its hindlegs with white eyes which held black dots for pupils. I shook, eyes wide in horror.
"Well, aren't yah gonna introduce yourself?" it asked, seeming expectant for me to speak. But I couldn't even mutter a single word, let alone introduce myself. "Eh, who cares! Care to play a game?" I cautiously nodded - anything to rid myself of the horrifying thing. "Great! Well, your Ravenpaw right? Course I'm right. So, here's the-Wait! How'd you know my name?" I cut off its words sharply, bristling when it stared at me for a moment.
"Well, here's the rules." It had skipped completely over my question. Strange... And terrifying. "So you gotta find me! I'll hide and you find me! If you don't catch me by the time the sun rises, times up!" it chirped, then disappeared. Had it left? But, it said it'd hide. Must've already went? Who knew. All I wanted to do was find it - I didn't want to know what'd happen if I didn't.
I swiftly - but shakily - hurried through the dim fern tunnel that led out of camp. I roughly shoved through the brush and undergrowth, avoiding the thick oak trees that rose up at every angle. Soon, I heard a quiet shuffle aside from my own, making her ears perk and heart pound.
I remained silent, staring into the dimly-lit undergrowth where the sound came from. Another shuffle or two were heard, before the forest went oddly silent once again. After a minute of standing there silently, I continued on, this time moving much faster and staring into the darkness surrounding me. My heart beating fast as a bird's wing, I hurried through the plantlife, freezing when I heard the scuffling once more.
Terror clenched in my chest as it tightened in fear, watching as that same horrifying rabbit scurried across the grass in front of me, seeking to take my breath with it as it disappeared into the brush as fast as it came. I soon regained normal heart beat, scampering into the ferns in fear. Surely I'd reached the river by now? Did the forest go on forever? The questions swirled in my mind, making me skid to a halt.
Suddenly, I realized how close it must be to dawn. The thing hadn't ever said what would happen if I didn't find him, but surely it wasn't good. I raced into the undergrowth again, my chest beating faster than a struggling magpie's wing as I veered around a tree's trunk and continued on. Quickly, I burst into the same clearing I'd been before, spotting Sunningrocks and the river. Everything beyond the misty waters was to dark to see.
Without thinking, I bounded to the pile of boulders, scraping my claws along them to scamper to the top. I kicked aside pebbles, begging to find the rabbit within them. Soon, I found that the scraped away pebble had led to a rock, and as I shoved it harshly down the pile, it led to a small cave. Strange, I never remembered seeing that before.
With much hesitation, I forced myself to leapt into the shadows, which swelled around my furry body and blocked out the moonlight from above. My paws made contact on hard yet soft stone, and as I opened my eyes, I found myself in a pitch black void. I began to panic, tail and fur fuzzing out and eyes widening and I begged for light or that rabbit.
Quickly, my hopes were answered, as the creature stepped up to me with its insanely sharp smile. I quickly dreaded asking to see it. "Well done! You win!" it congratulated, it's smile seeming to widen.
I hesitated to open my muzzle to speak, stepping back into the shadowy world. "You win the best price of all - you get to live!" it announced proudly. So that's what would happen - this thing would've killed me. As quickly as the rabbit appeared, it's body merged with the shadows, disappearing. It's terrifying smile was etched into my mind, as I stared around into the blackness in terror.
The world began to brighten, at first slow and welcoming, though quickly speeding from dark gray to bright white in seconds. I squeezed my eyes shut, as the world disappeared, leaving me to jolt awake in my den, hyperventilating and terrified. I laid there for a moment, the soft sunlight shining into the den. I quickly hoped to never see it again, as I began to groom my pelt, it's insane smile and creepy voice stinging my mind.
There it is, my entry for Cole's contest. I'm sorry if you aren't familiar with the Warriors universe.
