MORE SHORT STORIES

My breaths came quickly, as I shoved papers off a dusty, old desk, hoping to find what I needed in the stack of random objects. No no no no no... It's all gone WRONG! WRONG!

A voice inside my head screamed, as a loud siren began to blare over the normal calm music that filled the lab. I jolted up, looking at the open door I'd escaped from, seeing flames starting to spread.

I screamed, turning around and sprinting for the door. Smoke was spilling into the room, making my vision hazy and begin to cough. As the door neared, my lungs heaved, trying to hold onto my last bits of clean breath.

My chest tightened, as a familiar scream filled my ears. Skidding to a halt before I reached the door, I spun around, seeing my lab in flames. Terror made me choke, as well as the smoke, as I tried to locate my beloved Grey.

As smog filled my lungs with every breath, I sputtered weakly, finally spotting the small coyote screaming, trapped beneath a fallen bookshelf which had already been covered in the fire.

I ran as fast as I could, eyes squinting from pain as I grabbed his hand, tugging the young creature to his paws and up into my arms before sprinting to the door again. I released one of my arms, tucking it over my chest and face before ramming at full-force into the door.

It swung open with a loud bang, making me and Grey topple into the concrete of road. I pulled him closer to my chest, turning and racing for the nearby woods, coughing and sputtering with smokey lungs and red eyes.

Soon, I collapsed, making sure Gray didn't catch my fall. I quickly rushed to his side, breathing heavily as sirens came into the noise, my lab in red and golden flames. As I turned the young coyote over onto his back, I gasped, dry tears swelling in my eyes.

I let out a forced gasp, seeing half of his face's fur burned off, leaving black and blistered bare skin. The burn mark stretched down his arm, to his side, and ending on his thigh. I quickly wrapped him up in my arms again, running towards the multiple police cars and firetrucks that had gathered around the burning lab.

As I reached the parking lot, I tripped on a stone, me and Grey collapsing to the hard concrete again. My vision began to fuzz up and darken, panting as it faded to black, hearing the voices of paramedics before I passed out.

About three months later

I stood with depressed eyes and a weak figure, staring down at the rain-soaked grave of the one I'd raised from a pup - and it was all my fault, wasn't it?

Tears stained my cheeks and burned my eyes, as I looked down at the name. It'd been etched out - by me. I just couldn't stand staring at it.

The date of his death was also etched out. I just couldn't handle seeing the day he died, and his name - it was all my fault, and because of my stupid experiment, Grey was dead. DEAD.

A pain stung my heart, making another flow of tears come. I collapsed to my knees, burying my face in my guilty hands, sobbing. ITS ALL MY FAULT, ITS ALL MY FAULT.

ITS ALL MY FAULT.
