There Shall Come Silence That is Left Speaking
There was always something about death that enthrals her, moves her, drives her to patiently do everything she needs to just to arrive to that outcome. I had always been thinking about how easy it is for her to wish for something most would avoid, most would fear, and most would everyone else suffer. Surely she isn't the only woman in the world to desire for such, but she is the only woman I've ever known so fascinated by the thought of it.
I feared dying most of all, and when I did die—it felt like everything stopped. I had consciousness, thoughts...but the rest of me was dead, like I was wandering for no particular reason, my purpose forgotten. I then realize I was indeed very weak. I could be everything I want because her blood runs through me, because I was made with half of her existence.
But deep inside, I was deliberately ignoring that potential because I fear I might turn out like her, that I might get despised for being powerful. I am not like her who had long stopped caring about other people, I still do, I still fear their judgements. I am not strong like her who is able to accept everything she has been misunderstood with. At the same time though, I still hope I could change her fate—for I knew she deserves far more than this.
But I wouldn't be able to do that if I won't become powerful, if I won't embrace that potential—especially if I still choose to drown myself in fear. I won't get anywhere I want to be if I continue to be the way I am now. I have to change. I need to actually to do something now.
But how?
I found myself asking that question for some time now. Surrounding me was darkness—nothngness. No life, no death—like an abyss that clouds everything around, my consciousness barely hanging with me, and I refuse to let it go. There was that path beneath me though, a clear, white crystal path that seems to glisten whenever my foot took a step forward.
My reflection would cast on it, creating a low sound that would ring throughout and continuous steps would result into a symphony, a chilling one which reminded me I'm alone. I couldn't remember how long I have been walking, there was no sense of time in this place—as though there was an enternity that exists along with this road.
There aren't any particular emotions that well up inside me, no exhaustion, no pain, but there were those hints of loneliness, like I was empty like I was...fading, diminishing. The thought of leaving without even doing anything significant in this life is frustrating, and that drive is enough for me to hold on to this small bit of consciousness threatening to slip pass my grasp.
I stopped; my feet halting as I began to sense something loud, engraving against the sudden silence of the place. Heartbeats, pacing one after another—echoing like a wave of vibrations shaking up the entire stillness. Then there were those silent footsteps, one that came from the sidelines where the black shade of darkness is.
"Who are you?" My voice sounded hoarse, as though breaking because of the lack of speech.
"Who are you?" The figure asked back, emphasizing the 'who'. It came from a female, she had a low tone but it sounded erased of any emotions, appearing to be asking with blank words.
"Are you some kind of an entity tasked to take away my remaining consciousness?"
There was silence for a few passing seconds. "Do you wish me to be so?"
"So you aren't." I sighed, realizing it was relief. "Are you like me? Dead but couldn't quite fade away to afterlife just yet."
"This is an afterlife."
"There's nothing in here."
"What did you expect afterlife to be?"
"Religions said it was supposed to be a paradise, a world where everyone's in peace and contented."
"And where did those religions base that belief on?"
I shrugged, looking around. "Who knows? Books of Prophecies, Words of God, the Bibles. There are too many actually."
"You can only reach unto something you experience yourself." Perhaps it was because she opened her sight, but two bright, gray eyes then outshined a small circle of her reach. "Humans take on different paths after they die, those paths are called afterlife. Some are connected, some are not, some walk alone, some have companions."
"And they continue taking on that path forever?"
"For an eternity, yes. Those who do so always hope they reach the end of the road, but unless they are reborn once more, they can never. Each one has different paths according to how they have lived their lives—whether they remember or not."
"Like what?"
"Some walk on an infinite desert which remind them of their hard lives, some walk on fire which remind them of their sins, some walk on water which remind them of their hardwork—and many different ones, made out of different forms reasons. But all paths are always surrounded by darkness."
I looked beneath me, a white, crystal path—then my gaze shifted to the black and eerie terrains around me. "What happens if they step out of their paths?"
"The small bits of what left of their souls would be gone, vanish to forever without a trace, without getting a chance to ever be reborn."
"Then why do you have nothing to walk on to?"
"Those with paths mean they have lived their fates." She replied momentarily after, her steps drawing even nearer, until I see her bare feet just inches away from the edge of my path. "But I do not have one. I am a being that exists though life and death, I travel beyond realms, have seen and know far more than those who who got reborn for many lifetimes over."
"As old as time?"
"Perhaps."
"You have been alone for quite some time then."
"I have my time indulging through another's company in her lifetime. She is..." she trailed, almost seemed to be watching a memory. "She is enthralling, beautiful, and powerful. She is simply different."
"Where is she now?" I sighed, deciding to continue on my walk, and I heard her follow.
"Waiting for her death."
"Dying is such a waste. She appears to be a person who can have everything."
"Albeit all that, she takes none."
"Do you enjoy her company?"
"Somehow," she lightly chuckled. So she does have emotions. "Somehow I always find myself feeling so. But I cannot meddle with those with fates, and I can only watch from somewhere far how her fate writes the pages of her life." Her voice went low at the end, and I just knew she was somewhat disappointed with that fact.
"Then why isn't she dead yet?" But she didn't answer. Perhaps I went to far with that question. "If you enjoy her company, you could simply help her out."
"That is what I will be doing."
I once again took my stop, looking at her now that my view of who she is—is more clear as the glowing shades of light from my path hits her face. She had long grayish hair, eyes as distant as the skies, and energy as cold and silent as this whole eternity. Suddenly, I found myself so strangely drawn to that sight.
"I got a feeling I know this woman you're speaking of."
"You do."
I looked ahead, the path seemed to have only extended even more. "You said it yourself, you cannot meddle with those with fates."
"I can't because I decide not to. It is more of a personal rule, one that I do not wish to break."
"Yet you will."
"Indeed."
"How do you exactly plan on breaking it?"
Stepping right into my path, her bare foot landing on the cold ground and as she did, the crystal underneath her force shattered. But her gaze remained solely at mine, as if she isn't letting me look away. She walked forward, unbothered by the broken light fragments below.
And I couldn't stop myself from letting out a sharp breath, there were just something about her gray eyes that kept drowning my soul, as though trapping it yet at the same time, letting it slip away. But deep inside, a part of me hoped to be engulfed in her energy, alluring yet dangerous, calm yet cold, and visible yet mysterious.
She was already inches away from me, her height thoroughly matched mine, but her long grayish hair stretched just below her hip. Her skin reminded me of a jaded porcelain, fragile and smooth. But despite being aware of the the cracks surrounding me, shattering down the whole path, dividing my reflections into several forms as if being in different mirrors simultaneously—I couldn't bring myself to look away.
"By meddling with your fate." Her voice resonated throughout the whole space, filling in those gaps of loneliness all around and as it did, the cracks beneath me started meeting their ends, shaking.
"It's more like you're breaking it."
"In order for you to change it, I have to."
"I care too little about mine—"
"If you want to change her fate, you have to care about yours." She sighed. "But I do not want you to kill her, Celeztie."
I flinched, my eyes widening for a second only to be replaced by a gentle smile. "That's new. People around her wish her death more than anything."
"My reason is more selfish than theirs," her hand then traced the lines on my temple, caressing my face. "They want her dead for it is the only way she can take her rest, her peace, and the only way she can save herself from all those sufferings she has been through."
"And what about yours?"
"Her presence alleviates my loneliness." She leaned her face closer, and I was left immobile, trapped. "When you bathe in power for too long; you get drowned and when you do, you forget how to breathe—to live. And I have come to a point where no one else could pull me out of that suffocation nor anyone could simply drown with me. But Caelesti did—and she still does, but unlike me; something could pull her out of that suffocation."
"Something?"
"Death."
"And in the end of the day, you still wish her death."
"My desire is for her to live, but I could only simply watch what would happen."
"Why are you telling me this?"
"I travel beyond life and death, far more than any tales of time could tell." She met her forehead with mine; eyes closing.
Then on my surprise, I felt a wave of enticing energy pouring inside my body—it was serene, I felt that sudden tranquility which washed away all of my earlier anxieties. I felt so alive. Blood rushing out, filling every veins underneath my skin, heart thumping that it was all I could hear at the moment, nerves filling my senses one after another, and my pale blue eyes painting colours.
"Y-you're..." I breathed a sigh of relief as it came flooded my entire body, warming up at the contact of blood. "Reviving me."
"You are still not completely alive, but I am certain they can pull you back from here, in afterlife, now."
"Who are you really?"
"That question is unnecessary. This is the last you see of me, though perhaps I'd come around again after many passing lifetimes."
"Are you a god?"
"No." She chuckled, preventing a laugh. "Gods are beings, entities of powerful forces. But I am different, I simply...wander through time." She pulled a step back, a small smile creepinng on her face. "I believe in you, Celeztie, and in whatever you'll do. So grant me a favour and change her fate."
"Your name—"
She extended a hand, her fingers grazing along my forehead—and before I even came to realize it, I was already falling, the shattered fragments of crystals circling around me, as though I was being sucked by an unknown force beneath. But it was a pleasant sensation, one that makes my whole body throb in anticipation.
"Athanasia."
My visions were swallowed up by the growing darkness, blurring my sight of her and finally, I answered to the tempting call of silence.
My breathing came in as sudden as though I was grasping for air, my eyes jolting immediately awake, my body aching in treacherous stabbing pain that I couldn't prevent a scream escaping my lips. My back arching, the heat engulfing all of my senses—like I was burning.
"Celeztie! Calm down!"
"It's normal, alright?! Just calm her down!"
"Normal ba ang tawag mo—"
"Shh! Just hold her down!"
"Aeryn, she's absorbing too much of our energies—"
"She has to Theone! Her life force was completely drained out. She's hurting because we're forcing our unique energies inside her."
"But her body keeps rejecting the energy. If we force it even further—"
"Not the time for being pessimistic, Zen Arkion. Now Silverrium, it's do or die. Do it!"
"Tsk. I hate it when Thana orders me around. But the chant is all ready."
"Millard, double your barriers and Ziandra, make sure her nerves aren't blocked when Silv does the chant."
I growled uselessly as I felt a wave of energy breaking inside me, forcing their different spiritual energy properties through every veins in this body.
"If she can glare like that, then she's fine." A man said with his long silver hair tucked loosely behind him as he crossed his arms.
"What if she falls unconscious again?" Tanong ng isang lalaki—Zen.
"As long as she stays inside that barrier, she'll be alright."
"We need to at least keep an eye on her." Sabi ni Theone.
"Oh feel free, but I'm out. I'm already tired." She waved her hand in dismissal. "I've been constantly holding unto her soul these past few weeks, and I can't take it anymore. I'm more suited in letting a soul go than to hold and pull it back to life."
"Hindi naman mawawasak ng ganoon lamg kadali ang barrier. Kaya pwede na muna kayong magpahinga." Suhestiyon ni Millard.
"But what if she goes on another rampage?" Ziandra asked. "Silverrium! You can't just go and disappear yet!"
"Just like Thana Keres here, I am tired. I am in greater need of food at the moment. Especially those new batch of cookies Ellise has been baking since yesterday—"
"I told her to make those for me!" Thana bursted in obvious irritation.
"Well, you two need to hurry then. I could sense that Athena is already in the dinning room with the rest of her crew." The woman sighed. "I, for one, needs another one of those pills from the alchemist."
"Aeryn, nasa laboratory si Lucis kasama si Finé mula pa kahapon." Ziandra said. "I don't think disturbing them now in a middle of their experiment is a good idea."
"I'm fine. No need to lock me up."
"Her consciousness has returned rightfully this time. I suggest she take more rest to get used to her new life force." Wika ni Thana.
"There is another way for her to get used to it."
"I'm helping her get the hang of her energy, so if you don't want to help then don't interfere."
"That is enough."
"Psh. Spoilsport." Reklamo ni Thana.
"Amakin is here. Go." They all beamed when she said that at agad na nawala sa paningin ko.
"Would you have preferred if I had left you in Cretian Plains?" Her voice reverberated along with the stillness of the waves.
"Perhaps. But I would have probably despised myself if I had stayed."
"Cretian Plains is a warzone. I direct my enemies in there to prevent them from stepping right into this Isle."
"I figured as much."
"Some manage to slip pass by the Plains, some manage to enter Mávro, but no one ever survives. Those who die in Cretian stay in the Plains. Their souls are forever trapped, their times forever unmoving."
"Yet here I am." I watch as her figure cast a shadow upon the sand. "What price were you willing to give to get me out of there?"
She lifted her hand, blowing a soft air above it, energy then pouring like raindrops above the sky and all of the sudden, I found ourselves standing atop a cliff. The rock beneath perfectly held still by the piles of mountains ranging from both of my sides to the ends of my vision.
Gasses of air scattered underneath as they slowly form into clouds which dance through the glowing lights coming from the setting sun. It has always been mesmerizing whenever she takes me to a place which would easily engrave deep inside me, like she was letting me see something so magical for that's all she can give me.
"My trust." A breeze came excusing its way around, her long black hair fluttering effortlessly through it. "That is what I can leave to you behind, Celeztie."
I stood up, dusting the small dust particles off my dress as my skin bathe under the sunlight. "And it's more than enough."
"My fate is unchanging, and it will remain so unless I die." She turned herself around, her gaze finally meeting mine. "Yet I trust you'd prove me otherwise."
"I won't stop until I do."
"I know you won't."
She smiled, a genuine one that filled my heart with warmth at the sight of it. It was such a rare view that imprinted deep in my mind, that figure of her smiling so beautifully at the end of an endless nowhere along with the sun setting behind, the lights leaving feathered kisses through her fair, fragile skin.
"Do not hurt me with memories, Caelesti."
"It is a reminder that my presence will always haunt you. A pain that I am willing to give for you not to forget me. Selfish as it may sound, I do not like the fact that those important to me would rather choose to forget than keep the pain of my memory in theirs."
"Parang sinasabi mo narin na mas mabuti pang mamatay na lamang din kami sa sakit."
"Emotions are powerful, they drive you towards something you either avoid or desire. Yet at the same time, they make you weak—under the pretence that it only makes you a human."
"Pero hindi ko pinagsisisihan na magkaroon ng iba't ibang emosyon."
"You shouldn't." She let out a sigh, one that lets me know she was satisfied of the moment as her eyes drifted to the sight before her. "If there is one thing I regret myself, it is not that I have emotions—it is the reality that I was not able to raise you myself."
"I might have blamed you when I was young, na dahil sa'yo ay hindi ko magawa ang mga bagay na gusto kong gawin. That you abandoned me to suffer...and I was angry at the thought of you only letting me survive just for me to kill you. I still am upset about it."
"I was escaping through the mountains when I was carrying you, dozens of armies tailing behind. Fire raging everywhere, grounds shaking in turmoil, sceams penetrating deep into the trees. Your father was captured, the rest of those who follow me are away doing their specific tasks." She turned to me, her hand scanning the side of my face. "You were a burden, and I hated being slowed. I was weakened considerably for you kept absorbing all of my energies."
I closed my eyes, touching her hand. It was a blend of warm and cold, it was soothing. "I see."
"I was too weak after I had you born with no one but myself. I considered killing you then." Her hand traveled above my head, caressing my hair. "You were so small and fragile like a single crack of your weak bones would kill you. But you never really cried. You kept looking at me with domineering curiosity, your palest blue eyes sparkling, and I didn't know why I thought killing you in the first place."
She chuckled lightly and continued. "So I wrapped you with a cloth, burned down the mountains, killed thousands of my enemies, then escaped—all as I held you close."
"Paano ako lumaki kasama ang De la Valliere at Klein?"
"I was recuperating my energy when I found the two of them months later, having just birthed their own children themselves. I left you there then I continued on my way."
"How were you so sure they wouldn't kill me when that's all they did in different parallel timelines?"
She let out another smile, poking the tip of my nose as I stepped back, frowning. "Because no matter how much they wish to erase my existence, I still trust them."
I clenched my fists, looking away. "Sometimes you're evil, sometimes you aren't. You're complicated, Caelesti." She laughed in reply, one that pleasured my ears.
"Your mother is known for it." A deep sounding voice came suddenly behind along with familiar footsteps. He smiled at me and rubbed my head against his big palm almost violently, messing my hair. "I'm glad you're all fine now."
The sound of a loud, echoing roar cried through the skies, shaking everything in sight. A huge gust of wind stroke just beside us, realizing a dragon just went pass by, then another from the other side, followed by another dozens more of them—all in different sizes. There were those who moved in groups, while there were those who flew alone.
The dragons roamed the skies, breaking down the cloud formations and as the clouds started dispersing, I saw the waves from kilometers below engulfing the whole sea while monsters came into view, leaping out to the surface then jumping right back down. The sun continued to set, slowly being replaced by the moon that painted the skies into pitch-black.
"War is brewing, Celeztie." He said to me, his face becoming serious—though Caelesti only smiled, as if looking forward to it. "And it signals the halt of time, marking a new era."
"Ano ang ibig mong sabihin?" Nakakunot-noo kong tanong.
Explosions were then heard, and looking from below, different ship vessels distorted the calm waters from distants ahead. Cannons were directed towards the island, shooting without hesitation. Their huge flags waving through the winds...and I recognize those very well.
"...Exodus." A sharp breath escaped my lips.
But among the skies, airships also claimed their reigns from the roaming dragons, shooting the monsters down with numbers of metal bullets. Their flags stood perfectly atop each of their vessels, fleets ranging from more than a hundred slowly dominated the night sky with only lanterns illuminating the surroundings.
"Black Clan." I stated, my eyes widening.
Spaces were continuously formed surrounding the entire Mávro Isle, and among those void of circles were armies jumping right from them like they were some sort of gates being opened. Armies of people ran like ants toward the ceter of the island, fending off the incoming hordes of monsters.
"Iyana's army has arrived." He mentioned, crossing his arms as Caelesti nodded. "The West Mages did involve the Coven. I could also see the Assassins Association making their move."
"Everything is going in motion."
Lightnings cracked though the dark skies, electrical surges hiting the water in precice accuracy along with the spreading fire burning down the scattered mountains into piles of ashes. Another group of warriors appeared floating through the sky, there were seven of them, their eyes glowing that made me shiver.
"The World's Organization is here, along with the remaining seven candidates." He summoned a layer of barrier around us as the raining drops of fireballs poured from above. "When are you going to start your first move, Ke'ala?"
"Watching them all is entertaining enough." She smiled, her anticipation growing by every minute passing.
She closed her eyes, inhaling the scent of the air now filled with the signs of war. When she opened them, my whole body shook, shivering—my heart racing so fast it might bursts, my lungs catching the heat that protruded deep inside me as my own excitement fueled every last bit of senses.
"But soon—there shall be end." Her glowing, deep blue eyes landed on my pale one.
Fear radiated in every part of me and I knew she could easily sense it. Her energy continued to rise that it was almost suffocating, it was different from any other energies I've sensed from her so far. It was intense, powerful—dominating every single colliding energy throughout the whole island...it was dangerous.
Her lips parted, words making out like a deadly symphony threading—unveiling another mystery. "And soon, there shall come silence that is left speaking."
