Chapter 26: Team Leader

"So," Warren broke the silence in the room after Teresa had just told them a rather surprising theory of hers. "I'm the next target."

"It's very likely if they are targetting the X-men but it's not definite," Teresa replied back.

At first, there were a few disagreements to Teresa's theory, but the more everyone thought about it, the more it makes sense. "As far as I know, you are not part of the X-men, so why did they target you as well?" Erik directed his question to Teresa, but she wasn't the one to answer it and instead Hank did.

"They might have not been targetting Teresa at all. Maybe their target was only Scott and Teresa was just collateral damage. I don't think she would have gotten hurt if she wasn't in that car accident. She was only hurt because she was there," Hank was careful with his words when giving his explanation to Erik. "But it might just be the original plan."

"The original plan?" Warren repeated in a tone of disbelief.

Everyone turned to Hank for an explanation, except Charles and Erik who were thinking of the same thing Hank was thinking. "It depends, but if the attacker's ego is hurt when they found out that Teresa saved herself and Scott from having far worse injuries than they had, then they might be changing their next target from Warren to Teresa. If they know Teresa's strength, it makes sense for them to target Teresa over Warren too," Charles nodded.

"It's not an uncommon thing to happen," he agreed.

"Killing two birds with one stone," a remark was made in the corner of the room and all eyes were upon Peter's figure as he took a bite of his red apple, casually leaning against the wall for support and not paying much attention to the others. It was only until he looked up that he realized the eyes looking at him for an explanation. "If the attacker knows how to play their cards right, they don't need to do much work. They can just kill Warren and Teresa in one attack because we know how much they love to hang out with each other without the others."

Peter gave a suggestive look to Warren and Teresa that Teresa was quick to glare at him for but Warren frowned at Peter's words. Not that he was offended by it, but rather because it was the truth and for their safety, he knew he would not be seeing Teresa as often. "They can't be seen spending time together, even and especially if they are with other people. If the person behind this was willing to get their hands dirty by injuring Teresa in order to get Scott, then they wouldn't be afraid to do the same to others with Teresa and Warren." Erik stated.

"But we are also able to use this to our advantage," Teresa pointed out. "It is still a theory, but it could be the truth we are looking for. If the person who had attacked me and Scott sees me and Warren in public more, they'll feel more confident and plan their next attack on us. It'll be easier for all of you to target him as well."

"You want us to use you and Warren as bait?" Jean asked for confirmation, which Teresa gave by nodding her head. "It's a brilliant idea and a good theory too, but what if the plan ends up backfiring? We'll be risking not only yours and Warren's lives, but also the people at the school. The attacker is intelligent, whether we'd like to admit it or not, and they could be using this to their advantage."

“Maybe it’s their plan all along for us to try and use one of you as bait,” Hank pointed out. “We still don’t know how powerful this attacker is and it’s better to overestimate him than underestimate him at this point after what they had done to Peter, Scott and Teresa.” He nodded to Peter and Teresa. If Scott was there, Hank would have nodded to him as well but he was in his room at that moment with Jubilee keeping him company since Scott needed to rest and being with them to hear about the attacker might trouble him.

"Perhaps they aren't attacking us because of the X-men. Maybe it's because of something else. A more personal vendetta?" Elizabeth offered as an explanation, stepping forward.

Ororo nodded, agreeing with her. "The attacks only started until he came along," she gave a sharp look to Erik. "Now, I'm not saying this is his fault, but we have Magneto in the school and Magneto has tons of enemies who're willing to do anything and everything to get to him, mutants and humans."

"Erik is a close friend to Charles and he was one of the founders of X-men, one of the oldest members even if he is already not in the team anymore. Striking a few people from the team— a team that he still has connections to, even if it's an old one, seems like a good way to get revenge," Elizabeth finished but Hailey disagreed with her sister's explanation.

"If it's a personal vendetta against Erik, then the attacker will think to go for his loved ones," Jean glanced at Teresa and Peter. "He had attacked two of his kids. Scott might have been the collateral damage in this situation if it's personal."

Warren furrowed his eyebrows. "But if it's a personal revenge, then how does the attacker know about Teresa's parentage?" He questioned.

Everyone turned their attention to Teresa but she only shook her head. "The hooded man that was watching me a couple times throughout my life also knows about her parentage and I'm not sure how either."

"Well, other than us, who else knows about your parentage?" Charles inquired.

Teresa shrugged. "Miss Jane is the only one who knows about my parentage— as far as I know —before all of you did. She was also the one to tell me the truth too."

"And how did she know? Did she saw who had left you—?" Erik asked almost immediately. To those that do not know him, Erik sounded demanding when asking that question but Charles and Teresa could sense the hint of desperation in his tone and they couldn't blame him for it. He didn't know anything about the family he has in the picture the hooded man had given Teresa and he wanted to get every bit of information he could get his hands on.

"There was a letter in the blanket I was in and it told her that but she didn't see anyone when she found me and she burned the letter as soon as she was finished reading it like it had instructed her to do," Teresa explained to him, causing Erik to falter slightly.

"Perhaps the hooded man is a family friend of yours?" Elizabeth suggested, taking the attention away from Erik and Teresa. "Uh, Teresa's family's friend, I mean. It explains why he has been there throughout her life."

"We still don't know his actual identity though. For all we know, he might be an enemy pretending to be a friend," Hank stated.

"Keep your friends close but your enemies much closer," Warren agreed with him, still not trusting this mysterious hooded person.

"Either way, who ever and what ever is the target, we have to be cautious and stay close to one another," Charles told them all and the team nodded.

Warren glanced at Teresa and noticed her in deep thinking. She wasn't paying much attention to Charles's words— well, she wasn't exactly paying attention to anyone's words ever since she had informed Erik of how she came to find out her parentage.

Just as the team gathered closer to focus on the next step of the school's security plan, Teresa walked out of the classroom, leaving the door slightly ajar. It was a little unusual of her since she would usually close them shut wherever she goes. The team became confused and puzzled at Teresa's sudden departure, and Erik wanted to go after her but Warren held him back. "I'll go talk to her." Warren told him and Erik looked at Warren dead in the eye in a way he would usually look at a person he doesn't quite trust— which is almost everyone —but Erik reluctantly followed Warren's words.

Erik might not trust Warren either but he knew for a fact that Warren is Teresa's close friend and a person whom she has a close bond to seemed like the thing she needed at that moment. Even if it meant he wasn't the one she needed at that moment.

Meanwhile, Warren was quick to catch up with Teresa. She noticed the sudden presence but made no effort to acknowledge it, knowing exactly who was behind her. "Where are you going? The meeting's not over yet," he asked her, but Teresa still didn't even glance over her shoulder to see him.

"I'm going to be checking on Scott. Jubilee might want to rest soon," Warren narrowed his eyes and touched Teresa's shoulder. "This is not the way to your room and we had left Scott in your room, not to the entrance or the living room."

Teresa stopped when Warren said that and she turned around to look at him and crossed her arms against her chest. She narrowed her eyes at him as well and although both of their expressions towards each other are quite terrifying to others, they held their grounds and showed no sign of stepping back. Warren decided to stand down first since he knew that if they continued, it would only last for a longer time, which would lead to nothing. However, stepping down first could show Teresa that he meant no harm and he didn't want to fight her.

"What's going on?" Warren's eyes softened as he spoke and although Teresa's eyes hardened from the change in Warren's behaviour, Warren managed to get an answer out from her. "I'm planning to leave soon."

"Leave now?" Warren asked for confirmation.

Teresa just nodded, her eyes still narrowing at him. "Any reason why? Last time you went out to buy McDonalds, your car got hit," Warren reminded her but Teresa just waved it off.

"I can handle myself just fine. I wasn't prepared back then but I am now, especially at a time like this. Let me be and go on my own," Teresa ordered him and she was about to walk again, but Warren prevented her by grabbing her arm.

"What's going on?" Warren asked Teresa again in a concerned voice with the same softened eyes.

Teresa stopped narrowing his eyes at him but she held a look of caution on her face as if she was fearing to tell him of her plan. However, what seemed like much consideration in her head that it was just Warren and no one else, Teresa chose to answer him truthfully, "Miss Jane hasn't talked to me in several days."

Warren furrowed his eyebrows and Teresa was quick to mentally prepare herself for the thousands of questions headed her way. However, it never came and instead Warren only gestured for her to continue, staying silent the whole time and letting Teresa speak. "Miss Jane would usually talk to me or Sofia at least twice a week. She had never missed a single call ever since we had both gotten here. She was always there ready to listen to us when we got the chance to finally talk with her about our lives, but she missed Sofia's and my calls ever since last week and no one had heard any new information about her. I can't sit around waiting because with everything that's going on," Teresa's eyes widened slightly and Warren urged for her to take a deep breath, which she did a few times before continuting, "they might have gotten to her and if they have, it's going to be my fault. I just need to visit her and see if everything's alright. She might just be busy, but I want to make sure."

Warren stayed silent. He had always known how important Miss Jane is to both Sofia and Teresa. Although Teresa had taken a huge part in raising Sofia as her own little sister, it was still Miss Jane that had raised them both as a mother figure and had taken care of them ever since they were little. Teresa remembered the nights Miss Jane would always cuddle her whenever she had a nightmare when she was a little girl or whenever she got sick. Oh, Miss Jane would stay up all night long just to make sure Teresa was fine. She was the one to also help build Teresa's confidence in herself. Of course, Teresa would never admit it out loud due to her ego— she blamed it on Erik's gene, but she was always grateful for everything Miss Jane had done for her and she kept a promise to pay it back to her someday.

Warren didn't know all, but he had heard most of the stories from Sofia and Teresa, and that was enough for him to know that Miss Jane is a good person too.

"You don't have to explain," Warren said, "but you can't go out of the school right now when the situation is this urgent."

Teresa sighed. "I can take care of myself—"

"Which is why I'm coming with you," Warren cut her off, finishing his previous sentence.

Teresa looked puzzled. "It's dangerous for you,"

"I know," Warren nodded.

"You could get hurt,"

"I know."

"You will definitely get in serious trouble for following me," Teresa told him.

"I know."

"And worst case scenario, you might die a painful death if I'm unable to protect you," Teresa said, but Warren just nodded. He was unfazed by her words and just said another, "I know."

She scrunched her nose slightly. "Why?" You must have a reason. She thought but as Teresa looked into Warren's eyes, she couldn't make out what it was.

"Because Miss Jane is important to you and Sofia, and anyone who's important to you both are important to me too," he spoke of nothing but the truth and after analyzing his face and body language, Teresa realized it as well.

Her eyes softened slightly at the realization but she made no remark about it. They held the same position for a few moments before Teresa cleared her throat. "We should head to the orphanage now. The sooner we get there, the better." She moved to walk to the school entrance again but this time, with company following right behind her. Teresa wasn't used to doing this with a partner but she guessed that she was glad it's Warren than anyone else.

"What are we missing?" Erik rubbed his forehead as he tried to think of solutions to his current problem. He had been looking over the old newspapers scrambled all over the teacher's desk in order to find clues about the house in Westview or anything that could relate to his supposed other family.

"Have you reached out to your contacts yet?" Hank asked him as he took off his glasses and rub his eyes, starting to have a massive headache.

"Of course I have but the only problem that came up recently is only about a quarrel between a human and a mutant in their neighbourhood. No news of anywhere near here," Erik was a little annoyed since Hank had asked him the same question not too long ago, but he knew that he was just making sure. "What do you know about that woman?"

"Which woman?" Hank furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. He put his glasses back on and sat up straighter. "The woman who raised Teresa in the orphanage— Miss Jane, what do you know about her?"

Hank opened a cabinet near him and inspected all of them one by one until he took out a file and handed it to Erik. The dark haired mutant noticed Teresa's name on the file and was quick to take it and open it. "We don't have a file on Miss Jane but you can read some of the information about her in Teresa's and Sofia's files."

"Why don't you have a file on her?" Erik inquired while reading the contents of Teresa's file, which wasn't much since Teresa had made sure to keep her powers hidden for a long time. The only power that was mentioned in her file is telekinesis and telepathy. However, other than that, there wasn't much information about her, except her classes, her room and basic informations like date of birth.

"Not all of the students have guardians and most of them that do prefers to not tell us about them, so Charles didn't make it necessary for us to have a file on the guardians of the students. But for the students who do have guardians, we keep their contacts in their file," Hank explained to him.

"What about the other children who came here with Teresa from that orphanage too?" Erik asked again, still not looking up from the file.

"All of them have the same information on their file about Miss Jane as Teresa's file does, so you only need to read Teresa's in order to get the information about Miss Jane." Hank informed him. He tilted his head when he saw the confusion in Erik's eyes. "Is something wrong?"

Erik didn't answer Hank's question and only continued to furrow his eyebrows as his eyes went over the specific letters that had been typed down on the file. "Her full name is Amara Jane Maia Watson?" He read her name out loud, before staying silent for a few minutes, in deep thinking.

"Yes, it is— is something wrong?" Hank repeated himself, growing concerned with Erik's silence. He thought something was up but Erik just shook his head slightly. "I've heard of this name before."

"Her name is common, so it makes sense why you've heard—"

"No, I've heard of her full name before. Amara Jane Maia Watson, I've heard it from somewhere but I don't remember where I heard it from," Erik was trying to figure out where he has heard of Miss Jane's full name before.

Hank only let out a breath but other than that, he stayed silent and let Erik do his own activities. He wasn't entirely sure how Erik knew Miss Jane's name but Hank suspected that it's because Erik has heard it before when he was at the school around the same time as Teresa and Sofia were given a tour of the school with Miss Jane. However, Hank decided not to interrupt Erik's thoughts in order to get work done and continue doing his own research on the potential mutants behind the attacks. Besides, even if Erik did find something, it would only benefit them, so it's a win-win situation for the both of them. It would largely benefit Erik though since he wanted to get his memories about his other family back.

At that thought, Hank paused in his movements and looked up at Erik. He inspected him and noticed how there were dark eye bags slowly growing under his eyes and Hank was sure Erik would get them if he continued his current sleeping pattern. However, at the same time, Hank couldn't blame Erik for it after all that has happened and he decided to remain silent. If it turned out Erik knew Miss Jane's full name through his hidden memories, it will help him greatly in recovering his past and who knows? Perhaps he will find peace in himself too.

Erik stood up from his chair all of a sudden and went out of the office. Hank shook his head but said nothing about his actions. It's better to do something in that situation than just lie around and do nothing. Even the smallest hint can greatly benefit them. Hank re-adjusted his glasses, writing several notes down of the potential powers both the hooded man and the attacker might have, and how similar they both are according to their strategies.

"This is a bad idea," Warren muttered it loud enough for Teresa to hear him, "and this is coming from me, Teresa."

"If you think it's such a bad idea, then you shouldn't have come in the first place. I was discouraging you from going too," Teresa rolled her eyes but paid close attention to the road as she drove them to the orphanage.

Warren and Teresa had stolen one of Charles's old cars. It wasn't an expensive one but it wasn't one that could barely work either, so it was perfect for a disguise and to prevent drawing any unwanted attention towards them. It took some time before Teresa managed to argue her way out when Warren protested that she shouldn't be driving yet, seeing as she didn't have a drivers license yet, though Teresa was more than capable of driving by herself just fine.

Scott was actually the one who had taught her how to drive and boy, did she know how to make him use the duct tape to stick himself to his seat. He was definitely proud of her but he was also secretly hoping for Teresa's test drive to end due to how fast she was going and how sudden she kept on using the brakes. He practically jumped out of his seat and his own glasses nearly fell off too but thankfully, Scott managed to catch himself before anything happened and swore not to let Teresa drive a car while he's in it anymore.

Scott had warned the others about this as well and Warren thought he was exaggerating until Teresa got behind the wheels and showed her ability on driving. Let's just say that Warren was grabbing onto his seat tightly while Teresa drove faster than even he ever has in his entire life and he's the type of guy who loves to make people terrified from his driving. "You know, going this fast isn't exactly a good thing—" Warren was cut off by a rough shake from the car as they passed by a bump in the road.

"I did say the sooner, the better, didn't I?" Teresa raised her eyebrow at Warren, only giving him a glance.

"Yeah, but how fast we're going wouldn't really matter if we die halfway through the journey, would it?" Warren countered to Teresa. She narrowed her eyes but Warren could only feel relieved as he feel the car slow down a bit. Teresa hummed and return her focus on the road.

"Remind me again," Warren clicked his tongue, "why couldn't I just fly and carry you there?"

Teresa shook her head. "Have you forgotten the last time you flew with Scott and Peter? You dropped Scott on a tree but you were too busy to notice it because you were entertained with Peter pretending to be a superhero," she reminded him.

Warren shook his head. "He is a superhero," he smirked at Teresa's mistake.

She resisted the urge to roll her eyes and replied back, "Correction, a superhero that can fly and doesn't need a wannabe angel to help them."

Warren pretended to be offended from her words. "People call me an angel because of my personality and I don't blame them," he countered to Teresa who snorted and laughed at that false statement.

Warren being an angel? Teresa couldn't ever remember him being an angel to anyone before except with children. Whether it'd be Scott, Jean, Charles or Hank, Warren would get scolded about being sassy and sarcastic with almost everyone he met, even strangers. However, that can't be said the same when it comes to children. Warren always have a soft spot for children. He's patient with them and there is not a single child whom he doesn't adore. It also explains his close bond with Lily and Sofia.

"What are you going to do when you get there?" Warren asked all of a sudden, breaking Teresa from her train of thoughts. She wasn't startled by it but she mentally scolded herself for taking her focus off the road when she should be paying attention to something that would impact Warren's and her lives.

"Hm?" She responded him back, gesturing for him to elaborate more on his question.

"I'm going to be checking on Miss Jane of course, and I might meet up with the other orphans there if they're not busy. It's the whole purpose of this journey," Teresa answered him and wore a look that was asking if he was going to continue to ask her stupid questions like that.

“No, I mean, after you check on her and meet up with the other orphans too, will you do something?” Teresa raised her eyebrow, gesturing for Warren to continue since she had no clue what he wanted to say. “A lot has happened ever since she visited the school and the last time she did, you weren't there much because you were busy with training," Warren started carefully. "Don’t you have questions about all of it, especially about the.. picture?” Teresa didn't reply anything back to Warren, thinking of a response to make, while Warren took the opportunity to ask her again, "Have you asked her about it?"

“Are you implying something?” Teresa questioned him sharply, seeing Warren right through his questions.

“I’m not implying anything but I think you’re the one who has other opinions about it,” Teresa didn’t reply to him again and Warren continued on by saying, “You think she might know more than she’s telling you, don't you?”

Teresa sighed. “There was more to the letter than Miss Jane told me about. It wasn’t just a statement that I’m the brilliant and powerful Magneto's daughter but there was more to it. I had to wait for seventeen years to know about my parentage and Miss Jane isn’t telling me everything because she wants to protect me. I know that but after everything that has happened, all I want to know is the truth and to know what was in that damn letter after all this time," Warren could see sadness in Teresa's eyes as she tried not to show it on her face.

Warren listened to her carefully and attempted to distract her by asking, “How did you know there was more to the letter than just that? Miss Jane had told you about it?”

"Miss Jane was honest to me about everything and she did told me there’s more to the letter than that but I first found out from an older orphan in the orphanage, Sebastian. He was the one to tell me about the letter in the first place when I didn't even know of its existence at that time and when I did, he told me that there was more to the letter than just what Miss Jane had told me but he didn't know what it was. He didn't get a good look on the letter, you see."

“Is he trustworthy?” Teresa nodded to Warren's question.

“He’s a simple guy, reminds me a bit of Peter sometimes. He doesn’t lie but he tends to not answer questions he doesn’t want to answer,” Warren hummed, nodding at Teresa's response, before a thought occured in his mind that caused him to feel very confused.

"How does he know about the letter and how could he have seen it? You told me last time that Miss Jane was alone when she found you and the letter, and she immediately burned it after she had finished reading it," he tilted his head in confusion. "Sebastian is quite similar to Elizabeth. He's a psychic too but he mostly get glimpses of the past rather than the future." Warren's eyes flickered with realization. "We can ask to get his help on this situation then. He can see who's behind all of this and we'll be on our way to beat them."

Teresa chuckled at Warren's words but shook her head. "Sebastian's power doesn't work like that. He's not able to control his power, you see, and he doesn't want to either. If he did, he would be learning at the school like me, Sofia, Lily and several others are. Sebastian prefers if those glimpses of the past come to him, as he says it himself, though he does enjoy seeing those glimpses when they do appear,"

Warren frowned. "Why didn't he study at the school?" He was puzzled as to why Sebastian wouldn't want to increase his power and skills, seeing as his power seemed to be potentially very powerful and quite useful in a situation they ate in. "There's a law in nature that tells you 'when you take, you give'. All mutants have powers— extraordinary powers they can think of as a curse or a gift but in their power, there will always be a flaw behind it. It could only happen under certain conditions and if Sebastian asks for more than he could give, he could lose his sanity."

"Ah," Warren understood Sebastian's reason. However, if Warren was Sebastian himself, he would have still wanted to know more about his power but it's everyone's choices in the end if they wanted to use their powers or not.

Teresa furrowed her eyebrows, leaning forward to get a closer look. "Do you see that?" Teresa asked Warren, but he had already taken notice of the sight in front of them at the same time as Teresa did. Warren glanced at Teresa as a dawn of realization came onto her and her feet hit the pedal. This time, Warren didn't go against her speed, not after seeing the thick smoke in the sky.

When they had arrived, Teresa quickly took off her seatbelt and went out of the car, not closing the car door. Warren followed after her soon as they witnessed a horrible sight.

The orphanage was surrounded by fire and familiar woman was bleeding on the ground in front of the orphanage.
