Chapter 24: Dear Brother
"It doesn't make sense. Summers never goes anywhere without his visors, he even leaves them on sometimes when he's sleeping and Hank had been making sure the visors are near him while he's at the clinic," Warren expressed his confusion as he tilted his head to Scott's direction, trying to get a better glimpse of the dark brown haired mutant.
Teresa didn't say anything and continued to stare at the two mutants's direction. She couldn't see Scott quite well due to the green leaves the large tree was covering him with, but she could see her brother very clearly. Peter had a look of anxiety on his face, which was not normal for him to have, nor was the feeling of fear he was radiating off, though Teresa had a feeling that he was trying to hide it from Teresa and Warren.
"We need to get Jean here," this was the sentence that caused Teresa to snap her eyes away from Scott and Peter, and she raised her eyebrow at Warren.
"What would you have her do if she is here?" Teresa questioned him calmly— too calm for Warren's own liking and he's unsure if Teresa is secretly very mad at him but makes an attempt to hide it in a situation like this as to not startle Scott and Peter or doesn't feel mad at all and agrees with his suggestion. In Warren's mind, the first seemed much more likely than the latter and because of that, he hesitated with his response.
"We can get her to use her powers to—"
"Jean is capable of startling Scott if she tries to contact him through her gifts. He needs the presence of someone near him. That's one of the reasons why he didn't attack Peter by accident. Peter hasn't made a move that's not yet unpredictable to Scott, but we don't know for sure which move would be the one to get Scott to open his eyes, and Peter knows that too," Teresa told Warren, causing him to blink a few times. "I'm able to distract Scott for the mean time and maybe even communicate with him, but i'm not willing to do that while you're still here. I won't be able to protect all four of us from Scott."
Warren frowned at her words, knowing what she was implying, but didn't say anything about that. "All four of us?"
"Well, we have to find a way to protect Scott as well. He is more capable of injuring himself than injuring us all actually, even Peter himself," Teresa said, before going into deep thinking a few moments after.
That was also one of the reasons why Peter didn't use his superspeed to get away from Scott and to warn the others about the situation. Teresa knew that Peter wouldn't forgive himself if Scott ended up getting hurt if he had left him alone, so even though it would put his life in danger, Peter decided to stay behind and keep an eye on Scott to make sure that he doesn't hurt anyone, including himself. However, it was also going to be a challenge for Teresa.
By keeping an eye on Scott to make sure he doesn't hurt anyone, Peter is not going to let Teresa be anywhere near Scott, and he continued to try to tell Teresa to stay away from Scott by continuing to wave his hand at her as a 'no'. The situation wasn't as bad as others may think but it could all end badly easily with one wrong move and Teresa needed to think of a plan to get Peter out of the way fast before any one of them makes a wrong move.
"He's not going to make things easy for us," Teresa murmured under her breath, which Warren caught onto.
"Peter? Is he being the protective brother now?" Warren questioned but Teresa shook her head. "He's being more of a protective brother towards Scott actually. It isn't good either because he's not going to let us near Scott, but i need to get near him physically, so that he would be used to my presence and not get startled."
"I can help distract him," Warren stated, and was about to move closer to Peter, but Teresa pushed him back with her left arm.
"No, your sudden presence would most likely startle Scott and he would be too distracted with it to notice mine. But it'll all lead to failure because you won't even be able to distract Peter," Teresa paused, "well— be a good enough distraction for him at least. He would see right through you and think you are just annoying him. We would need Jean for this one."
Warren nodded. "I'll go get her, i suppose," he said with a bit of hesitance. Teresa gave him a slight nod and glanced at Warren as he left Teresa and entered the school building. She let out a sigh and turned her head to Peter, meeting his eyes with her own. He felt quite suspicious at Warren's sudden departure, but before he could make another movement, Teresa narrowed her eyes at him and Peter could feel a strong but deep female voice that sounded similar to Teresa's inside his mind saying the word, "sleep".
Peter's whole body went stiff as he suddenly felt quite tired and had the urge to shut his eyes closed. Peter's head kept on threatening to fall down, but it never did and he would always bring his head up, trying his best not to fall asleep. He was trying his best to fight against the urge, but in the end, Peter lost the battle and his head backwards with his eyes shut closed as he lost his consciousness. However, before Peter's body could fell to the ground, his body was levitated above the ground, before he was gently placed onto the grass with no loud movements. Teresa let out a small hum, feeling quite satisfied, before she turned her head to Scott's direction and redirected her focus onto him again.
"Peter will forgive me for that... eventually," she murmured to herself as she walked closer to Scott, though she did it rather quite slowly as to not startle him.
Scott noticed Teresa's presence and he indicated that to her by moving his head towards Teresa, his eyes were closed, though it was with no effort and seemed almost as if he could easily open his eyes at any second. At that moment, Teresa's instincts were on a higher alert than it was before if it were possible, but she tried her best to make herself relax.
"Scott?" Teresa spoke up in a gentle voice, hoping that he would be able to recognize her voice. "Do you remember me?"
When Teresa asked him that, she stopped her movements but she stood quite close to him and was able to see him entirely, taking note of how all of his injuries had seem to healed, even the deep scars everyone thought he would have for the rest of his life. In fact, Scott looked exactly the same as he was before the accident, except he looked as if he had lost a bit of weight and was paler. He was wearing a blue hospital gown with no shoes to cover his feets, causing it to become quite dirty.
Scott's closed eyes were still on where Teresa was standing at, but he didn't open his mouth to reply to her. She couldn't blame him, it had been a while since he heard his voice or anyone's voice in general that it can make him hard to tell who is who.
"You're Rosalie," Scott said, causing Teresa to pause for a split second.
"Close enough," Teresa muttered to herself, before saying out loud for Scott to hear, "You can call me Rosalie if you'd like."
Scott tilted his head at her response. "That isn't your real name?" He asked her.
Teresa shook her head, before remembering that Scott couldn't see her and told him, "It's my surname actually and only one person has called me that in the past."
"Was the person 'Blondie'?" He was quick to question her, eager to know the answer. Teresa wore a confused look as she went closer to Scott, now only a few feets away from him.
"Blondie?" She furrowed her eyebrows. "Oh, do you mean Warren?"
"Blondie is the one with curly blonde hair and big wings," Scott informed her and Teresa nodded again. "Then, you are talking about Warren and yes, he used to be the only one to ever call me that."
"But why? Didn't he know your first name? I forgot what your first name is..." Scott went silent at the last part, furrowing his eyebrows, trying his hardest to figure out what was the girl in front of him's first name is until Teresa stopped him.
"No need to bother remembering, it'll make your head ache," Teresa told him, almost in a scolding tone. "Warren knew my full name, which is Teresa Rosalie, but he has this habit of calling most people or in this case, people he just know by their last names."
"Used to?" Scott questioned. "He doesn't call you that anymore?"
"I said that he used to be the only one to ever call me that until now since you are too," Teresa was now standing right in front of Scott and he knew that as well since he was now looking up to Teresa, his eyes still closed.
"That doesn't answer my question," he responded back.
Teresa let out a hum. "May i sit beside you?" She asked Scott.
He nodded and patted on the empty space beside him, gesturing for her to sit there and Teresa proceeded to do so. After she managed to find herself a comfortable sitting position, she began to tell Scott, "Warren had mixed emotions about me. As you know, we got along with each other after our first meeting and he liked me for some unknown reasons, but he also felt a little annoyed with me. I noticed both of his emotions and asked him about it."
"What did he say?" Scott asked, prompting her to respond back.
"He said that he likes hanging out with me, but the reason for his annoyance was because of my name," Teresa told him, causing Scott to furrow his eyebrows in confusion. "Rosalie had been Warren's favourite name. He wanted to name his future daughter— if he ever has one— that but he said he couldn't do that anymore after meeting with me because the name just reminds him of me. I got annoyed with him because of his answer and told him to start calling me by my first name instead. That way, Warren could use the name in the future and he would stop feeling annoyed with me for something i can't control."
"I also wouldn't have to get confused when someone calls me Rosalie instead of Teresa," she added.
"Did you think Warren was a strange guy because of it?" Scott inquired.
"Everyone is a strange person when they are put in a group where the others are similar with the other, except themselves, which would turn them into a black sheep, but i didn't think Warren was a strange person because of that, i just thought he was acting strange. That's all," Teresa shrugged.
"Do you wanna hear what i think?"
"I honestly don't. Your opinions don't make any sense sometimes, but i know you're going to tell it to me either way, so do tell," If Scott was able to open his eyes, Teresa knew that he would be rolling them due to her words but since he couldn't, Scott decided to just ignore her words as he usually does and began, "You know, it's kinda weird for someone to be doing that to someone they only hang out with."
The expression on Teresa's face turned confused. "What do you mean by that?"
Scott shrugged. "I'm just saying that Blondie doesn't usually does that with people he only hangs out or other people in general and before you go say that it's because of your surname only, then let me tell you a story about him and this other student," he spoke out, before Teresa could say what Scott had predicted that she would say. "There was this new student in our school and her name was Rosalie. Blondie and Peter were assigned to give her a tour like they were told to do with you, but Blondie was completely uninterested in her. Peter had to take over the tour to make sure she doesn't make a complaint about them to Charles."
Teresa narrowed her eyes at Scott. "And where exactly are you going with this?"
"He didn't feel annoyed with her for having the name Rosalie because he didn't care. He was uninterested with her," he pointed out. "That can't be said the same with you. You are an important person to him and he can't use the name anymore because it would just remind him of you, even if he hasn't called you that in ages."
Teresa closed her mouth again after she opened it when Scott was talking halfway to protest that it had been a long time since Warren had called her that and he would have forgotten it about now. She raised her eyebrow at Scott. "Do you have mind reading skills now as well? How did you know what i was going to protest your words against?"
"It makes sense for you to have that reaction, everyone else would be too. Denial is the first step for destruction after all," Scott said, causing Teresa to furrow her eyebrows.
She wanted to question him of those words since they sounded familiar to her, but Teresa's attention was taken away when her instinct was telling her that someone's presence was also there with them and she turned to look behind her. Teresa noticed a familiar figure standing not too far away from her and Scott.
Jean and Warren started to walk towards them, but Teresa held her hand up to tell them to stop, which they did. Jean's eyes went to the unconscious Peter who was still on the ground and held a look of disapproval on her face. Teresa just shrugged it off as if she was telling Jean that she didn't do anything wrong and only what's needed to be done. Jean rolled her eyes and wanted to talk to Teresa through her power, but she was interrupted by a sudden loud snore.
Everyone turned their heads to Peter's direction as he continued to snore even louder, even Scott himself had heard the noise and felt quite confused. "You made Peter fall asleep?" Scott asked, directing the question to Teresa.
"Well, he was supposed to be unconscious for the mean time, not.. asleep," Teresa furrowed her eyebrows, also feeling rather confused, but chose to ignore him and directed her attention back to Scott. "Do you remember how you got here?"
"What do you mean?" Scott questioned back, turning his head to where Teresa is again. "Oh, you mean how i got to the school? It's because i lost control of my power and my—"
"I'm not talking about that," Teresa cut him off. "I meant, how did you get out here? You're not supposed to be here, you're supposed to be in the clinic, lying on your bed with bandages covering your eyes to ensure that laser beams won't come out of your eyes when you wake up. And speaking of ensuring laser beams to not come out of your eyes, where are your glasses? You always carry them around with you."
"I— i'm not supposed to be here?" Scott was quite surprised and confused to hear that.
Teresa furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. "You don't remember anything?"
Scott frowned. "It's all really blurry, i– i don't remember—" SNAP!
Scott's head was quick to turn to the noise but Teresa was quick to move into action and gently but swiftly grabbed his face as his eyes finally opened, startled. Scott's eyes glowed a red colour, laser beams threatening to release themselves at any moment, but Teresa prevented it from happening with her gift. Scott blinked a couple of times in surprise, before he shut them closed again.
Teresa turned to Kurt who had accidentally stepped over a branch. His face was filled with guilt and regret, as he backed away from the branch. "I'm sorry!" He exclaimed, his words heavy with his accent.
Teresa shook her head while Jean sighed in relief. They were both just glad that no one was hurt, but Warren narrowed his eyes at Kurt and wanted to scold him for his actions. Jean held her hand out to show Teresa the thick and large bandages she was holding, before using her telekinesis to move the bandages to Teresa. She took the bandages quickly and wrapped it around his head, making sure the bandages covered Scott's eyes but didn't cover his nose at the same time.
"There, that should be able to keep laser beams from coming out of your eyes for the mean time," Teresa informed him after making sure the bandages weren't going to fall off Scott's face. He nodded to show that he heard her.
"Come on, Scott," Teresa took his hand into hers, tugging it upwards to get him to stand up. Scott noticed what Teresa was trying to tell him and slowly stood up. "We need to get you to Charles." She said, as she led him to Jean and Warren.
As Teresa headed towards the school's entrance, Jean cleared her throat to get Teresa's attention. This caused Teresa to turn her head to Jean and gave her a questioning look, wordlessly asking what she wanted. Jean gave a look to Teresa in return and pointed her finger to the still sleeping and snoring Peter. "Aren't you going to do something about that?" She raised her eyebrow.
"Eh, like i said, he'll wake up eventually," Teresa shrugged, before she headed back to the school's entrance with Scott by her side.
Jean rolled her eyes and glanced at Peter. She held her hand out to him, causing him to levitate from the ground, before she brought her hand forward to the direction of where the school's entrance is at, causing Peter to float towards it.
