Chapter 20: Acquaintances

"Are you two siblings by any chance?" That was the question Devin casually asked Teresa and Peter while they were showing Devin around the school. It made Teresa and Peter feel taken aback, and the silver-haired mutant turned to his younger sister with confusion in his eyes.

Peter communicated with Teresa through his eyes, asking her what they should do since this was the first time anyone ever asked them if they were siblings.

Teresa shook her head. "We are not siblings. Peter and i met at the school when i first came here. He and Warren showed me around the school just like what we are doing with you now, except i remember Warren doing all the work that time,"

Peter snorted in disagreement at that. "I offered to show you around the school with my superspeed. The kids love it, except after they actually experience it. The parents were always busy taking care of them afterwards," he snickered.

"And that's the reason why i politely declined the offer and didn't let you do it with Sofia too," she rolled her eyes.

"If i may ask, who is Sofia?" Devin questioned from behind the siblings.

"Sofia is a little girl who i came to the school with," Teresa responded back, glancing at Devin.

With that, Peter and Teresa continued the tour, although Peter was the one who did all the talking while Teresa kept her eye on Devin curiously. Devin didn't look particularly interested in what Peter had to say throughout the tour, but his eyes were still paying attention to the siblings. Teresa took note of how observant Devin is with them and she was more than convinced that he was like this as well when he was with Erik and the others.

Much to her embarrassment, Devin caught Teresa looking at him a couple of times, which made her look away, but she could always see him giving her a smile every time he caught her too.

Odd. That was what Teresa thought about Devin but she didn't say anything out loud. She didn't want to be thought as 'rude' to this new guest. It certainly won't be good for her image and it would be best to be in someone's favor rather than be on someone's murder list. However, Teresa's purpose to call someone odd isn't to offend him, but in her own perspective, she finds it as a compliment. She likes odd people– she finds them far more interesting than the ordinary mutants she associate with at the school or rather the mutants who are trying their best to be as ordinary as they possibly could.

"What did you and Charles talk about?" Teresa brought the question up in the most casual tone she could muster, and Peter's eyes widen.

He glanced at Teresa, wondering if she was crazy to openly ask Devin that question.

"Grown-up stuff," Devin shrugged. "If you want to know about it, you have to ask Charles."

"Why Charles? Couldn't we ask you about this? From the very source?" Teresa questioned, trying to get some sort of information out of Devin.

"You are not my children, which makes the both of you not my responsibility, but if i give you a piece of information that i shouldn't have and you two decide to do something reckless, i would be held responsible and get in trouble," he said.

Peter snorted, "How are you sure that we might do something reckless?"

"It would be insane for someone to think that the children of Magneto would never do anything reckless in their lives, especially when they are young," that response made the siblings freeze in their steps.

What–

Teresa and Peter narrowed their eyes at Devin, one out of curiosity and the other out of shock. However, Peter was quick to respond to him– too quick for Teresa's own liking.

"Magneto's children? Do you think we are his kids?" Peter asked him while Teresa mentally facepalmed herself, before she looked at Devin, waiting for his reaction.

Teresa knew that the speed of Peter's response has made Devin more suspicious or maybe even confirm his suspicion of them being Erik's children, but Teresa couldn't add anything else to the conversation. She knew that if she did, she was practically screaming that she and Peter were Erik's children, and Teresa didn't want to confirm Devin's suspicion in any way.

"Perhaps," Devin responded back, a small smile gracing his face, which made him look like a beautiful angel.

Teresa didn't like the smile on Devin's face. She didn't find it creepy or anything of that sort, but she certainly felt as if Devin was trying to tell her something through that smile. The smile felt as if he was trying to tell her that he knows– that he knows about everything. That made her a little uneasy, but Teresa told herself that she must not overthink things in order to concentrate on the situation at hand.

If anyone were in Teresa's position, no one can blame her for wanting to know more about Devin, but it was crucial for Teresa to put Peter as her main priority for the moment, even though he doesn't seem like he needs her protection nor does he want it.

"Do you have kids of your own?" Teresa questioned Devin, wanting to know more about him.

Devin shook his head. "I don't have any children,"

"You can think of your pets as your children too," Peter offered to Devin, but he shook his head again.

"I don't have pets either, but yes, if i did, i would have considered them as my own children," Devin nodded his head.

"Do you have a significant other?" Peter questioned, which caused Teresa to secretly roll her eyes.

The girl thought that the answer to Peter's question was pretty obvious and so did Devin, but he shook his head nonetheless and answered, "No."

Peter was not an observant person. If he was, he would have known the answer as soon as Teresa did and he wouldn't have to ask that question to him.

"And here, we have the library," Peter ran up towards the entrance of the library with his superspeed. Teresa and Devin followed him at the entrance shortly after a few minutes.

"You can go in if you like, but no one has been in there for a little while since the lockdown, so it's a little messy," Teresa told Devin and he hummed, leaning his head forward to take a peek of the inside of the library. Teresa repeated Devin's action and saw a long table in the library, which made her clear her throat. It was the same place where she had written a letter to the hooded man and she was still unsure whether or not that was a good decision.

"I think you would love to meet one of our brilliant teachers," Teresa spoke out all of a sudden and she glanced at Devin. "Professor McCoy is currently in his lab, and i'm sure he would love to meet you as well."

"McCoy?" Devin's eyes widen. "Hank McCoy? Oh, i would love to meet him! I have many questions that only he could answer. It is mainly about his mutation, of course, so i hope he doesn't mind."

"That's delightful," Teresa exclaimed and Peter looked at her weirdly, wondering if someone had hit his sister in the head since it wasn't like her to act like that. "But yes, you may want to be a little cautious with your questions for Hank. He's not one for violence, but sometimes–"

"–emotions can get the best of people, especially anger." Devin finished Teresa's sentence.

Teresa raised one of her eyebrows, hinting that she was a little surprised. "Yes, emotions can get the best of people sometimes, especially the negative ones."

Devin and Teresa looked at each other for a few minutes until Peter interrupted by saying, "Are you sure that you two are not the ones related? Because you both are literal copies of each other."

Teresa rolled his eyes at Peter's remark and shoved his arm away gently as Peter let out a small laugh.

Devin looked at their interaction with a thoughtful look on his face. If anyone were in his position, they would react the exact same way as he did because at that moment, Teresa's and Peter's behaviour with each other made them look as if they were siblings and though they try to deny that they were, their interactions with the other will always say something different.

"What?" Warren's eyes widen in surprise, his mouth was apart.

Jean nodded. "I know, it's a lot to take in," she said.

Warren opened his mouth a couple of times, wanting to say something, but closed it again each time due to his shock.

Not too long ago, before Jean told Warren and Jubilee everything she heard from Devin's and Charles's conversation in secret, Charles had asked the teenagers to give him and Erik some privacy to talk, most likely about the same thing the teenagers were talking about. Warren was the one in the group to protest the most when Charles requested that since he wanted some answers to his questions. However, Jean gave Warren a look that told him she needed to tell him something in the middle of his protest and that quickly made Warren shut his mouth and let the adults talk on their own.

Now, Warren was trying to process the information that Jean had told him. "Elizabeth's father was the person behind these attacks?" He finally spoke out.

"It would explain why the hooded man had attacked some of us for an unknown reason– it's because he had none and it's also because he wasn't the one behind these attacks. Elizabeth's father had more than one reason and he isn't too shy to start a fight with a mutant by what Devin had told Charles," Jean frowned.

"We've met the guy a few times, Jean, without knowing who he was and he's alright for a human parent of a mutant or mutants if we include Hailey too and their... alleged brother who had passed away," Warren replied back, finding it a little hard to believe that the nice man whom he met with a few months ago was the same person who killed a mutant just because they entered his neighbourhood, although most parts of him find it believable. Blame it on his trust issues.

"And why don't you look shock at the things Jean has told us about Elizabeth's father?" Warren suddenly asked, glancing back at Jubilee.

He found it quite strange that Jubilee wasn't trying to defend Elizabeth's father like she usually does with other people, and Jean found it strange as well. She narrowed her eyes at Jubilee, before her eyes widen in realization.

"You knew?" Jean questioned the unusually quiet black-haired girl.

Jubilee slowly nodded, her lips in a thin straight line. Warren made a noise of disbelief and looked at Jubilee, wide-eyed. "You knew?" He asked through a whisper.

"You knew and you didn't tell us?!" The disbelief in his voice turned into anger, and fury was evident in his eyes.

"Jubilee doesn't know that Elizabeth's father was behind all this, Warren. It's not her fault," Jean snapped at Warren, trying to defend Jubilee from his rage. "She only knows that Elizabeth's father has a history of violence, nothing else. Jubilee didn't tell us any of this in the first place because it wasn't her business nor her place to tell us, but if she had known that the situation was somewhat relating to Elizabeth and her family, she would have told us this immediately since it is necessary."

Warren's eyes flickered from Jean for a few moments before they went back to Jubilee. "Teresa, Scott and Peter could have been killed," he stated, nostrils flaring.

"Jubilee wasn't the cause of those accidents in the first place," Jean glared at Warren, silently demanding him to back down.

You know how Jubilee is, Warren. She's not the type of person who woyld betray her friends, which includes telling your other friends their dark secret when it is unnecessary to. Warren gave Jean a glare for entering his mind without his permission but he thought about what she said for a few moments before he paused at the Jean's next words. How would you feel if one of us decides to tell other people about your involvement with Apocalype for no reason?

The glare Warren was giving Jean turned darker and more dangerous if it was possible. Jubilee noticed how dark the atmosphere between Jean and Warren had gotten, and looked back and forth at the two. Much to Warren's and Jean's surprise, Jubilee gave Jean a frown as if she had known what Jean had said to Warren. Warren looked away from the two girls with a huff and turned to exit the hallway, but stopped halfway and turned his head slightly to Jean's and Jubilee's direction. "What you know is able to help us more than you think. Better tell all of them to Jean before someone ends up dead on the school grounds," and with that, he left the two girls alone to give them privacy to talk and to get himself together before he lose control and do something that he would regret later on.

Unbeknownst to Warren, Jean and Jubilee, there was a female mutant lurking around in the hallway opposite of where Warren went to and she had been secretly listening to their conversation the whole time. Jean was unable to sense her presence due to the unknown mutant's gift and how distracted she was in trying to prevent a fight from occuring between Jubilee and Warren.

The mutant walked back to her room and hummed a small tune, her voice was quite small, only loud enough for herself to hear.

However, unfortunately, i wasn't able to make a chapter as long as the usual ones are. But be on the look out for another chapter because i will be updating a new one faster than i have with the other chapters. Anyways, that's enough for me.
