Chapter 18: Overprotective Father On Duty
Lucky Blue Smith is the cast for the mysterious new character, Devin Spencer! I used to imagine Colton Haynes as his faceclaim but over time, i eventually decided that Lucky Blue Smith was the one.

His voice was calm and soothing, almost as if every word that comes out of his mouth would be comforting, but his tone hinted that he was playful and fun. It matched along smoothly with his features as well, but it only made Peter even more conflicted, because this man- who claimed to be Devin Spencer -didn't seem to be the type of person to beat someone up, unless he has a really, really good reason to.
"Who?" Peter broke the silence between all of them, a confused expression resting on his face.
"I'm Devin Spencer," he repeated himself, looking at everyone.
Silence occured again between all of them and for one of the times in Teresa's life, she felt uncomfortable with the silence and hoped that someone would break it soon. Teresa glanced at Jean, the redhead was narrowing her eyes at the new stranger in front of them and Teresa knew Jean was trying her best to read his mind. However, Teresa knew Jean was not able to when she stopped all of a sudden with a slightly frustrated look on her face. Peter noticed this as well and became more tense within the passing seconds, his anxiety slowly rising in him. In an attempt to comfort him, Teresa held Peter's hand into her hand. He gave her a thankful look while Warren went in front of Peter, his wings moving to show it off to Devin.
Devin looked at Warren and his wings, not feeling bothered at all with him. He only glanced at his wings with little interest, looking at it as if it was the most normal thing he has ever seen.
"Mr. Spencer, welcome to Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters," Charles's voice was heard around the school gate, causing the crowd to split into two to make way for the headmaster of the school. Erik's eyes widened when Charles offered a warm smile to Devin who gave a smile back to him. He made an attempt to push through the crowd and go after them to express some of his thoughts and emotions, but Hank who noticed this, held Erik back and gave him a warning look. "Erik, don't start an unnecessary fight," Hank said to him, pushing him back, not strong enough to make him fall but strong enough to . him stumble to the back a little.
Erik glared at him, anger and annoyance filling his eyes. "He's the one who beat my son up and you're demaning me not to fight with him? You have the nerve, Hank," he hissed at him. Hailey who overheard their conversation can't help but involve herself into the conversation by correcting him, "Until we can prove that he was the one who had beaten Peter up, you have absolutely no evidence to suggest that he was the one to do that. Even Peter is quite confused about all of this and he did not say anything about the silver haired mutant he had seen actually do anything to him, he strongly suggested that the silver haired mutant might because he is desperate for the truth and this mutant may be the key to answering every question Peter has in his mind about it all," she paused to look at Erik's face for a moment before finishing, "he's innocent until proven guilty."
Hailey received a glare from Erik and she rolled his eyes, looking away from him and muttering, "Everyone is always against the truth when they were told to their faces."
"He is attractive though," this caused Erik and Warren to give Elizabeth an annoyed look. "What? I'm just saying what my eyes are telling me. Besides, innocent until proven guilty."
She spoke the last part louder than she did with the other sentences. Warren ignored her and noticed something about this man. "He looks kind of like Peter," he remarked, feeling something strange in his stomach. Jean, who was still narrowing her eyes at Devin, made a remark of her own. "He looks more similar to Teresa than Peter."
"I don't really see it," Jubilee scrunched her nose, trying to see the similarities between the siblings and Devin.
Nearly every member of the X-men team, the Horan sisters and the Lehnsherr siblings turned to look at Erik who was still struggling with Hank's grip. "You don't think-" Peter didn't need to finish his sentence, it only took a second for Erik to understand what he was trying to imply and Erik had to resist the urge to sigh and facepalm himself. Erik felt thankful when someone decided to respond to Peter for him, but he was definitely not thankful on who the person was.
"I am twenty seven years old and no, i can assure you that i am not his child," Devin's voice startled the Lehnsherr siblings since he was standing quite close to them, it made Teresa and Peter each want to punch him out of defence and jump back while placing their hand on their chest. The siblings had only realized how loud they were being after they looked around their surroundings and noticed the many eyes looking at them. Teresa knew that in this type of situation where Peter would be his sassy self, he would be saying, "I know i'm handsome, but that doesn't mean all of you have to stare at me like i have bright green hair," and she would be mentally facepalming herself at his behaviour, but now, she was extremely worried for him when he did nothing but stare at Devin.
Erik, who somehow managed to get out of Hank's grip, much to the siblings's horror, tried to get to get out of the crowd and walked towards Devin and Charles. "That's uh- nice to know," Warren spoke up, scratching his head, not knowing how to give a response to his words, while Charles was busy reading Hank's mind after seeing him waving his hand at Charles, trying to get his attention.
Charles quickly turned to Devin. "Mr. Spencer, please let me introduce you to one of my oldest friends," as soon as he said that, Erik stepped out of the crowd and revealed himself to Charles and Devin. Peter and Teresa groaned quietly and prepared themselves for whatever it is Erik is going to do that would definitely not be to their liking. "Why does this have to happen to us? What did we do so wrong? Just because i stole that wolf for a few hours back then, it doesn't mean we both have to suffer this," Teresa snapped her head to Peter and narrowed her eyes at him. "You stole Lion?"
"I borrowed him for a few hours," Peter responded with puppy dog eyes to save himself from Teresa's anger. "Of course you did," she rolled her eyes at him and looked back at Erik, hoping deep down that Erik would not make a scene, although it was most likely going to happen.
"Erik Lehnsherr," Devin's eyebrows shot up in surprise when he saw the mutant in front of him. "I never thought i would see the day where i'll be meeting the infamous Magneto," he remarked, lending his hand out for him to shake. "Well, you know how life is," Erik accepted Devin's gesture and shook his hand, "sometimes it's full of surprises."
Charles and Devin were quite surprised yet pleased with Erik's behaviour, though they noticed how tight Erik's grip was with Devin's hand. "Life is," Devin nodded as they began to stare at each other, light blue eyes against sparkly blue eyes. Their hands were still holding the other, both of their grips strong, neither one wanted to back down and neither of them were willing to back down. Erik's eyes was threatening Devin in a way, he wanted him to be scared- to fear him, but Devin raised his eyebrow at Erik's so called threat and looked almost bored at him, but in a way, he was also demanding Erik to challenge him- to give him something to entertain him with. Everyone was looking at them both, waiting for something to happen or for someone to do something. Warren and Jean wanted to say something to interrupt their little staredown, but Teresa and Hailey gave them a look not to. The girls were quite curious and interested to know who would lose the battle first while Jubilee and Elizabeth had an unreadable expression on their faces, but like Teresa and Hailey, they were looking at them with interest. Peter and Kurt were just profoundly confused on what was going on.
"Are they supposed to look at each other like that?" Peter questiones Kurt through a whisper.
Confusion was written all over Kurt's face and he asked back, "They don't want to fight?"
"Don't you think it would be nice to continue this inside the school in private?" Charles asked, reminding the two adults that the students of the school, including Erik's children. Devin was the first one to break the eye contact and turned to look at Charles, his lips formed into a smile. "That would be an excellent idea, thank you, Charles," he redirected his attention to the crowd and said, "and all of you should be in your classes as well."
"We are on a lockdown right now, we won't have any classes for the mean time. We can't even go outside the school without someone watching us," Warren informed Devin, which made him frown.
"Why? Has something happened?" He questioned, curiosity in his eyes. Erik turned to him sharply and opened his mouth to say something, but a strong gush of wind prevented him from doing so. He looked up at the crowd and saw Teresa silently thanking Ororo who had been quiet all this time. "A few accidents happened here, it's not exactly the best time for anyone to be visiting us right now," Charles explained to him shortly, keeping the details of the story to himself. He glanced at the crowd, making Devin do the same and he immediately understood what Charles was trying to imply. "It would be best for us to have a conversation in private," he agreed, nodding.
Devin looked at the crowd awkwardly, not exactly enjoying the eyes still looking at him out of curiosity, excitement, fear and so on. "Show's over guys, everyone go back to your rooms!" Warren shouted at the crowd and some of the students began to leave, not wanting to go against Warren's demand. "We have a guest after all," he murmured, not directing this to anyone, but the people near him, one of them including Teresa and Jean, heard him.
"I hope you'll stick around for dinner," a cheerful Jubilee said to Devin. He shrugged. "Dinner sounds quite nice but there are several things i have to talk with your headmaster first and it might take a while,"
Jubilee shook her head. "No worries, me and my friends like to eat dinner late. The younger kids are usually the ones who wants an early dinner,"
"Well then, i would love to join you and your friends for dinner, Miss..?"
"Jubilee. Jubilee Lee, but you can just call me Jubilee!" She gave him a grin.
Devin returned her grin with a charming smile. "It's nice to meet you, Jubilee. I hope to see you and your friends at dinner later," with that, he walked away and followed Charles into the school.
Erik, who was still standing in the same place when he and Devin had a staredown, was busy staring at Devin, both with caution, interest and confusion. Teresa noticed this and walked up to him, patting him on the back. This startled Erik and made his head snap to Teresa's direction, his shoulders relaxed when he realized it was just his daughter. He moved his head up a bit, a gesture that was asking her what she wanted. Teresa pointed at the direction Charles and Devin were at. "Stop staring at them, especially Devin Spencer," Erik gave Teresa an 'are you serious' look. "He could be-"
"He may also not be the guy we are looking for and you will be known for liking to stare at an innocent stranger," Teresa interrupted him. "Staring is rude. Only do it for a while, but don't keep on doing it like you are doing just now. It's quite odd, and people will get ideas."
"What ideas?" Erik furrowed his eyebrows. "The only idea people will get is how much of a protective father i am towards my children."
"Try overprotective," Teresa snorted.
While Teresa and Erik continued arguing about his staring, a problem between two of Teresa's friends rose.
After Devin and Charles entered the school and are out of sight and Erik was too busy arguing with Teresa, Warren marched up to Jubilee, an angry look on his face. "Jubilee, what do you think you're doing?" He hissed, glaring at her. "You're asking the man who had beaten Peter up to join all of us for dinner! How insane is that?!"
"It's nice of us to ask him to join us for dinner and i wasn't the one who thought of it in the first place," Jubilee responded back calmly, but there was something in her tone that hinted Warren to back off. Her response made a confused expression form on Warren's face. "Wait a minute, who thought of it first?"
"Jean did," she answered with a small smile. "Jean thought it would be a great idea for him to eat with us for dinner to get to know him better, of course."
Warren quickly caught the hidden intention behind Jean's reason to want Jubilee to ask Devin to join them for dinner when Jubilee told him that and he has to admit that it was a pretty smart move to make. He opened his mouth to say something, but he was interrupted by Teresa's voice, "Just because he is attractive, it doesn't mean you can stare at him all day long!"
Erik shot her a warning look. "You know very well that's not the reason why i was staring at him," Teresa shot him a warning look as well. "Oh, so now you do admit that you were staring at him." Erik groaned, covering his face with his hands, some of the wrinkles on his forehead showing in the process.
Warren groaned too and shook his head, before turning it to a certain direction, "Jean, could you say something to Teresa about this-" he stopped himself when he realized that Jean wasn't there, and began to look around, trying to find her, but to no avail, she wasn't anywhere to be found. The mutant turned to Jubilee who was watching him, her head tilted, "Where's Jean? And where's Peter?" He asked, also just realizing that Peter was nowhere to be found as well.
Jubilee shrugged. "Jean told me to stay here for a while with Teresa, Erik and you. Said that she had to do something with Peter and Kurt first," she informed him.
"Peter and Kurt," Warren muttered, a wave of realization came over him. "They want to hear that man's and Charles's conversation."
He looked up at her with a confused look again. "But if they are trying to eavesdrop on their conversation, then why did Jean want us to stay here for the mean time?"
Jubilee opened her mouth to say something, but like Warren, she was interrupted. This time, it was by Erik's voice, "I'm reckless? You're the one who's reckless. Who would have been outside in the freezing cold playing with their pet wolf near the woods and not run away when they see a hooded with red eyes? A reckless person!"
"And who do you think i got my recklessness from?" Teresa narrowed her eyes at Erik.
Warren closed his mouth and nodded. "We have to be a distraction to Erik, just great. Not what i imagined spending my free time today," Jubilee shrugged. "It could have been worse." He nodded in agreement before he joined the argument between the father-daughter duo. "I'm pretty sure she got the recklessness from you, Erik. I've seen her do so many reckless things worse than that."

"Teresa is the best sister ever!" Peter whispered-yelled, resisting the urge to punch his fist into the air, as Jean shushed him, warning him to stay silent, in fear that Devin or Charles might hear them. "We're not too far behind them. If you continue talking so loudly, we'll get caught," Jean urged Peter.
They were currently sitting in the hall outside of Charles's office, waiting for the two mutants inside the office to start speaking. Jean was using her powers to conceal both her and Peter to match the hallway. If someone were to pass them, they wouldn't be able to see the duo. Unfortunately, Jean can't use her powers to conceal their voices, so they needed to be quiet or else they would get caught, seen or not seen.
During Devin's interaction with Erik and Charles, Peter and Teresa had a small and quick discussion with each other to figure out which of them would be the one to spy on Devin and which of them would be the one to distract Erik, knowing that he will be trying to watch the two of them at all times and succeed in doing so. Teresa agreed to be the one to distract their father, which made Peter feel quite grateful, although he didn't show it much. She made Peter and Jean promise to tell her and the others about the conversation between Charles and Devin, even to the smallest details. Jean was surprised that she didn't want to listen to the conversation as well, but she was quick to realize why.
Peter sighed quietly and softly, breaking Jean from her thoughts. Imagine if Scott wasn't still in the clinic. He would have been the best person for the distraction. Because she was using her powers to keep them hidden, she read his thoughts by accident. She could feel the exhaustion and hint of sadness by his thoughts, causing a look of pain and pity to settle on her face, though Peter couldn't see it. Jean wanted to say something to him to comfort him but she forced herself not to, especially when the two started hearing footsteps coming towards them. Jean and Peter held their breath and froze their movements, hoping that they wouldn't get caught. Much to their relief, Elizabeth stepped into the hallway. Peter let out a breath of relief but Jean immediately covered his mouth with her hand.
The girl took note of how nervous Elizabeth was being and the look of disbelief on her face- as if she had heard news about something or someone that she wasn't at all expecting. Elizabeth looked at Charles's office with extreme hesitance, her hand was shaped into a fist and close to the office door, debating whether or not she should knock on the door. But before Elizabeth could knock on the door, the three teenagers started to hear voices coming from inside the office. "Would you like some tea, Devin?" They heard Charles offer, along with sounds of liquid being poured into a cup.
"No thank you, Professor," Devin responded as Elizabeth quietly retreated from the door and sat on the opposite side of where Jean and Peter were currently hiding. She moved her head a little closer to the door, trying to eavesdrop on their conversation. "We should start discussing about the matters at hand."
In the office, Charles placed a cube of sugar into his cup of tea before stirring it with a small spoon. After he was done, he brought the cup to his lips and drank it. He nodded, agreeing with Devin. "Let's," he said, a smile on his face to make Devin feel comfortable, before taking another sip of his hot tea.
