Chapter Two
I'm performing on stage, lights dancing around me. The music flows through me and I move on my own without a thought in the world. I see my friends and family cheering me on in the audience... Adelynn! Adelynn! Adelynn! -
"ADELYNN!" I hear a voice screech in my ear and I bolt upright in shock. "Come on, you have to wake up! It's morning already!" Cyre tugs on my arm and helps me up to standing. "Okay, don't panic but.. you fell asleep while doing homework last night and I couldn't bring myself to wake you because you looked so peaceful and you were so tired earlier and-"
"WHAT? I didn't finish my homework yet? No no no... I have to finish it because we have a test today and then I won't be prepared..." I sigh and mentally panic before shoving everything into my school bag and heading over to my dresser to take clean clothes out. "Hey Cyre, which jacket do you like better?" I quickly hold up a slim white jacket and a black vest. "I plan on wearing it with black leggings and a light blue shirt."
"The black one." Cyre suggests, and Fern comes zipping out of the bathroom to nod her head in agreement. I quickly change clothes before grabbing my backpack and heading over to the stairs. "Wait!" She calls, and I stop dead in my tracks, turning around to look at her.
"What? Did I forget something?" I look around the room as Raina comes out of the bathroom looking like a fresh new flower in the spring. "Wow, Raina, you look so fancy today!" I scan the room again, not sure what I missed on my way to get things ready.
"You know it's only 5:45 in the morning right..." Raina trails off, clearly unhappy with how her morning has started.
"Cyre! Why'd you wake me up so early? I don't usually get up until 6:45..." I trail off, staring Cyre down for an explanation.
"You might meet your partner today! What if he's cute? What if you already know him? What if you DON'T already know him? OMG you get to make a new friend, I'm so excited!" Cyre keeps going on and on while Fern aggressively nods along. "Come on, let's get you ready for school!" Cyre announces, while I look at her in confusion.
"Umm.. Cyre I am ready. All I need to do is brush my hair and -"
"No no! You must be more presentable! You could be meeting your partner today! OMG what if he's cute?!?" Cyre flies over to me, holding my hairbrush in her wings and going on her ramble again. "Here, I'll help you do your hair while you put on some makeup!" Unable to argue, I just lazily put on the most minimal makeup I can do while Cyre brushes my hair. Deciding to leave it down again today, I turn to Raina who looks at me with approval. With her makeup and hair pulled to the side, it seems Fern was thinking the same as Cyre.
"Umm.. there's one more thing you guys need to know..." Fern trails off, looking at Cyre.
"Adelynn, we need to come with you to school." Cyre nervously folds her wings behind her back, looking up at me with a small smile.
"What? No you can't, people would look at me like I'm crazy!" I say and she immediately flies over to me, stopping me from letting the retractable stairs down to the main level.
"We have to be with you at all times, Adelynn! You never know when an akuma will overtake an innocent person and you need to be ready to help them! So I'll just make myself comfortable..." She gives me a smirk before flying into my purse and making herself comfortable in one of the inside pockets. Glancing back at Raina and Fern, I see the same thing has happened. I internally sigh as I let the stairs down, making my way to the kitchen where I find my mom baking muffins.
"Good morning girls! I hope you slept well." She gives us each a hug and hands us a box of muffins. "Feel free to help yourselves and then give the rest of them to your friends!"
"Thanks mom!" I pack a muffin into my lunchbox before closing the box and setting it down on the table. Sneaking a peek over my shoulder to make sure our mom isn't watching us, I stuff a few dragon fruits into my backpack while Raina adds scones to hers, and we both hastily zip them up before grabbing the box of muffins.
"We'll get going. See you later!" Raina calls from across the house, and we leave to go to school with way more food than we'd possibly ever need stuffed into our backpacks.
"So I just took a ton of dragon fruit and you stuffed like a dozen scones in your bag..." I trail off, snickering as Raina shakes her head in amusement.
"Good job Adelynn, now just keep acting normal like I'm not here and no one will get suspicious." Cyre peeks her head out of my purse for a second before ducking back down as I hear footsteps approach. I whip my head around to see Aleron and Céleste walking side by side, with Aleron smiling at something Céleste must have said. Raina and I reach the crosswalk and unfortunately have to stop walking, giving Céleste the time to catch up with us.
"Oh look, Aleron, I found some ugly frogs." She gives us each a demeaning smile and hugs Aleron's arm while pulling herself closer to him. I frown and look down, trying to avoid eye contact before I give a remark I'd regret later. "Hey Adelle - look at me when I'm speaking to you! Gosh, don't you know what etiquette even is?" My name is Adelynn... She steps away from Aleron to give me a hard shove in my shoulder, rendering me off balance.
I drop my backpack and purse as I start to fall forward into the speeding traffic, my life flashing briefly before my eyes as I wait for the impact on the ground and the oncoming car to finish what was started. My ankle twists and I know I won't be able to get off the ground in time.. Right as I am about to hit the pavement I'm yanked back up into someone's warm embrace, who then proceeds to pick me up and carry me back to the sidewalk.
"What is your problem Céleste? Do you realize what could have happened if she had been hit by a car?" The voice says before wrapping their arms around me tighter. I look up and gasp when I see that Aleron was the one to save me from getting hit. I start breathing heavily, the scenario playing through my mind and realizing I was about to die, or at least get severely injured. "Raina, you go on ahead and tell the teacher we'll be late to class. I'm going to take Adelynn to the nurse to make sure she's okay, I'll also take her stuff with us. Céleste, just go, you've caused enough trouble." Raina looks at me concerned and I give her a small smile to show her that I am unharmed, and with that she takes off running to the school as soon as the light changes and Céleste stomps her way across the street. Aleron turns to look at me before he gently sets me down and picks up my things. "Can you walk?" He asks before I nod in silence while looking at the ground.
"Thank you." I mutter and he nods back. Taking my hand in his, Aleron walks me across the street and we slowly make our way to school. As we reach the nurses office Aleron sets both our backpacks (and my purse) down on the floor before knocking on the nurse's door. I quickly snatch up my purse and bend down to look and make sure Cyre is okay. She gives me a smile and nods before shooting back down in the pocket when the door opens.
"Aleron, what a surprise. Is there anything I can do for you?" The nurse asks, and Aleron gives her a small smile before turning to look at me.
"Adelynn here nearly had a close call with a car this morning. Would you be able to check if she's okay?" He asks, helping me to my feet. The nurse nods and leads me into the room, Aleron following and closing the door behind us. She sits me down on a chair and leaves to go get her clipboard of information. Aleron sits next to me, looking at the floor for a moment while he is deep in thought. I copy his actions, staring at the floor thinking about what's all happened this morning. From waking up I had a close meeting with death and was saved by Aleron.. the new kid who joined our school just yesterday. I flinch as a hand lands on my shoulder before pulling me in for a hug. Sparks shoot where our bodies make contact, and I have no explanation for it.
"Ummmm... hi?" I try to say as my words are muffled by Aleron's shirt. He shushes me and takes a deep breath before pulling away.
"I'm really sorry about Céleste's behavior this morning, endangering you and all." He shudders slightly before giving me a smile. "I'm just glad you weren't seriously hurt." I smile back, turning my gaze back to the floor just as the nurse walks in.
"I'm going to do a few things with Adelynn now, Aleron would you mind leaving the room for a few minutes?" She asks and Aleron immediately stands up and walks out, closing the door silently behind him. "Now dear, does it hurt anywhere?" I shake my head no and she performs a few tests before standing up with a smile. Writing something hurriedly on her clipboard, she peeks at the door before turning back to me. "You look fine to me, you must be pretty lucky!" I laugh a bit but stop as her face suddenly turns serious.
"Umm.. is something wrong?" I ask as she stares between me and the door over and over.
"Are you two a thing?" She asks and I whip my head back and forth indicating a no. "Well I can see he has something for you, and also that you have something for him. I think you two would be really good together. If you ever need any relationship help, you know where to find me..." she trails off with a smirk as my face heats up in embarrassment. I guess I never realized it but now that I think about it... I might slightly like Aleron. Not anything serious, but like.... he seems really nice and he did go out of his way to save me from getting hit by the car... Okay, maybe I do like Aleron now... But wait, I only met him yesterday... It would seem the nurse can read my mind as she instantly laughs and pats me on the back. "Don't worry child, it'll all work out, you guys are made for each other!" I give her a questioning look and she shrugs. "I can just tell. Don't worry, I totally ship it!"
"Okay....?" I gather up my things and head over to the door. "Thank you for your time!" I smile brightly before shaking my head at the thoughts she planted in my head. Walking out of the office, I turn to my left to see Aleron leaning against the wall waiting for me.
"Hey, I guess you're alright?" He asks and I smile at him as he picks his backpack and jacket up off the floor. We walk back to class for a short while before he grabs my hand again, a spark shooting up my arm again at the sudden contact. I flinch and tug my hand away, thinking about everything the nurse had said again. Turning my steps into a brisk power walk - and partly leaving Aleron behind - I quickly make my way to our classroom and knock on the door once before entering.
"Hi, sorry I'm late." I mumble out before running over to my desk and sitting down. I give Raina a questioning look, seeing she must have been paired with Luke for an activity instead of me, but she just shrugs. The teacher nods at me with sympathy before Aleron bursts through the door and walks over to his desk - officially the same one as me. My thoughts are plagued with the nurse's ideas as I can't help but stare at his beautiful black hair, styled in the most perfect way ever.. Mr. Montehugh continues his lecture, but I can't hear anything he says as I zone out staring at Aleron. Raina notices my staring before smirking at me and shoving a notebook across the table for me to get caught up on notes. I nod my head in thanks before snapping out of it and focusing on the lesson being taught right in front of me.
"And then I said, well that's too bad, I ate all the cheese puffs!" Arielle stated, and the three of us start to laugh. We were all sitting down to eat lunch together - that is, Raina, Arielle and I - and telling funny events that happened last night at our houses. "Anything interesting happen to you two last night?" Arielle turns to look at us and we quickly look at each other before shaking our heads no.
"We just kind-of worked on our home-" I start to explain how nothing interesting happened but am rudely interrupted by Travis who had made his way over to our table. Tapping Arielle on the shoulder, he waits for her to turn around before saying the most possibly messed up pick-up line ever.
"You know, I've been.. looking at your butt for a.." He begins to talk, and Raina and I begin snickering at his choice of words. "And I was wondering if, you know, I could have it." He wiggles his eyebrows up and down while giving her a cheeky smile.
"Ewww, what do you mean?" She asks, clearly disgusted. "No!"
"You know, just like, just give me your butt."
"No!"
"Give me that butt!"
"No!"
"Give me that butt!"
"No!"
"Give me that butt!"
"No!"
"GIMME THAT BUTT!"
"NO!" Arielle stands up and smacks Travis in the face before stalking out of the cafeteria. Travis just watches her leave before plopping down in her seat and turning to face us.
"So ladies, what's happenin'?" He asks, giving us each a smirk. We both simultaneously roll our eyes before packing up our backpacks and turning to leave. "Hey girls, no hate on the man! Come on, you love me!" I hurriedly make my way out of the cafeteria to find Arielle sitting by a tree in the courtyard with her fists clenched and a scowl on her face. As I look behind me I see that Raina is nowhere to be found. Huh, strange. Turning to Arielle, I sit next to her and give her a hug.
"Hey, are you okay?" I ask, looking at her with concern.
"Yeah I'm okay. Travis is such a.. such a...." She trails off.
"Such a butt?" I finish for her, laughing after I say it. Insulting him with his own words...
"DEFINITELY a butt." Arielle laughs with me and we glance at the school, seeing Raina walk over.
"Raina? Where were you?" I ask, taking her tray and helping her sit down across from us. "And wait - who's food is that?" We all look at her food suspiciously, moving between her and her new food with a squint in our eyes.
"It's.. Luke's, well I mean it's mine - never mind I'll just explain it." We all nod our heads and lean forward towards her, our eyes as big as plates. "So I was following you guys out of the cafeteria but Manon tripped me and I ended up dumping my food on the floor."
"OH COME ON." I immediately interrupt her.
"OMG SHE'D TOTALLY DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT." Arielle and I both erupt into a rant, completely interrupting Raina from finishing her story.
"Yeah yeah yeah, now are you going to let me finish the story?" She asks, smiling as she takes a small bite of her turkey and cheese baguette sandwich. We all pause our rant to think a bit before I nod my head to tell her to continue. "Okay, so I was going to pick up my tray but Luke beat me to it and threw the food out. Of course, he didn't know that was my only food, but he figured it out eventually. He said he felt bad so he bought me this lunch and told me to come find you guys since I was gone for a while. And, well, here I am." Our mouths hang open at the thought of Luke doing all this for her, especially since it was just a lunch and we'd all be more than happy to share ours with her.
"Wow, Raina, that's... really nice of him...." I say, with Arielle immediately agreeing with me. As I look back over at Raina I see her cheeks turn pink and a small smile forming on her face. "Wait... Raina..." I trail off.
"Do you have a crush on Luke?" Arielle blurts out, and I smack her on the arm before turning my attention back to Raina who just blushes more. "Oh my gosh you totally do!" Arielle shrieks and we all join in with her and start partying around as Raina just takes another bite of her sandwich. When I notice she's uncomfortable I immediately drop to the ground and take a ginormous bite of my muffin before taking out the box our mom gave us.
"Mmmmm this is so goooood...." I make eating my muffin into a show for Arielle, emphasizing the box sitting next to me. "You should really try some!" I shove the box of muffins into the party triangle and it comes back empty with silence following it, both Raina and Arielle stopping their partying and each eating a muffin. Raina gives me a smile and blinks her eyes twice, a sign of her thanking me for changing the subject. I blink twice back and then turn back to my muffin, enjoying the softness in each bite.
"Hey Adelynn, are you ready for the math test today?" Arielle asks, and I immediately choke on my muffin. After coughing for a minute straight, I can talk again and I stare at her in horror.
"No... I fell asleep before studying! Would you guys mind if we reviewed for the rest of lunch so I feel more confident with the whole sine, cosine, and tangent thing?" I sheepishly look back down and stuff the remaining part of my muffin in my mouth.
"Sure, let me just get out my notes!" Arielle begins explaining the differences in equations and soon I feel slightly ready to be tested on the unit. The bell rings, signaling the end of lunch, and we end our studying session to go back to class and begin the ever-dreaded math test.
"Wow, that practice was intense.." Raina and I drag ourselves home after three hours of dance, our homework long forgotten in our ever-so-present tiredness.
"At least that math test wasn't as bad as I thought it was. And hey, Travis getting yelled at by the teacher at the end of class was pretty funny." As soon as we get home we immediately shrug off our coats and gloves and put them away in the closet. Skipping the kitchen, we immediately head to our room and flop down on our beds, only pausing for a moment to let Fern and Cyre out of our purses.
"I could sleep forever and I'd still be tired!" Raina groans into her pillow, burying her face in its fluffiness. Fern attempts to get her to sit up but it's no use as Raina pretends to fall asleep as soon as she gets under her blankets.
"What an eventful day this was..." I sigh and turn to look at Cyre, who is currently enjoying her freedom by flying around the room. "Hey Cyre, are you sure you're okay after what happened this morning?" She zips back over to me before taking one of my hands in her wings.
"Of course I'm okay, you're the one who had a close call! I'm just glad you're alright and nothing serious happened." I nod my head in agreement before noticing the plates on the table in the middle of the room. It would seem that our mom put dinner for both of us on the table when she knew we were on our way home. "Here, I'll leave you and Raina to eat. Fern, let's go look out the window!" The two kwamis rush over to the window and sigh at the beauty of the city lights while Raina and I begin eating our well-deserved meal.
"Hey Cyre, when do you think they'll meet their partners?" Fern nudges Cyre as the two admire the view from the window. The two giggle before Cyre shakes her head.
"I'm not sure, but I can't wait for it to happen." They glance at us and snicker before looking back at each other. "OMG what if they're cute?!?" Cyre gushes and Fern aggressively nods.
"What if they think THEY'RE cute?!?" Cyre and Fern look at us again, and Raina and I look back at them with confusion.
"What's so important about these so-called partners anyway?" Raina inquires, seeming to inhale her chicken right after she asks.
"Your partner will be there for you and you for them. You're soulmates; you are meant for each other. They will be your other half, and together you will balance each other out." Cyre replies, taking note of how I suddenly stuff cauliflower grumpily in my mouth. "Adelynn, what's wrong?" She flies over to me and gives me a questioning stare. "Are you unhappy that you have a partner?" I nod, looking down at my plate with a sad smile.
"I guess, I just...." I seem to be unable to finish my sentence as I end off on a tangent.
"You're worried that he won't be like Aleron, don't you." Raina asks, and I nod again. "Hey, all I can say is that whoever your partner is you're meant to be with. If he's like Aleron, okay, if he's not like Aleron, so be it." I stuff more cauliflower in my mouth before looking up.
"I guess I just don't know. What if he's this total jerk of a guy and takes me for a fool? You know how clumsy and sensitive I am - "
"You mean how clumsy WE are." Raina interrupts as Cyre pats me on the shoulder sympathetically before turning back to look at Fern.
"Let's go looking again Fern, I wanna see if any more lights turned on!" Cyre dashes over to the window before gasping and zipping back to me. "Adelynn! You need to transform! There's an akumatized citizen in the street who will cause major damage and endanger many people if you can't stop them!" Raina and I look at each other in shock before nodding our heads in sync. Dinner is long forgetter as we get ready to transform. "Adelynn, this is really important so I'll make it quick. You have two powers when transformed in addition to flight and invisibility -"
"Woah what? I can fly and turn invisible?" I interrupt Cyre, staring at her in shock.
"Yes but only you will know how to do it! Your power is 'Lucky Feather' and it gives you more endurance and summons a sword with a random power! NOW HURRY!"
"Cyre, let's fly!" I transform in a flash of light, momentarily blinded by how bright it is as I hear Raina do the same. I guess figuring out these powers is going to be a live-and-learn experience..
"Fern, wings out!" Carefully peeking downstairs to make sure our parents didn't know what was going on - they ended up being asleep on the couch in front of the tv -, Raina and I climb up the couch under our window and step out, looking out from the rooftop balcony for a moment before turning back to each other.
"Well here goes nothing..." I say, ready to jump down at any moment. "Raina we should-"
"Shhhh! You can't call me that! Someone might be listening! Call me Libelle when I'm like this, remember?" I nod my head furiously, almost falling off the roof with the force. "Don't worry, I'll call you Phoenix. Now.... where is this person they were speaking about?" We scan the city hoping for a sign of a villain but all we see is the night sky and empty streets.
"Maybe we should split up?" I ask, shrugging my shoulders at the lack of a victim. Raina - sorry - Libelle nods her head in agreement and we split off, each going a different direction. Looking behind me, I see Libelle jump down to the street and run off into the shadows, leaving me alone to go my own way. I cautiously jump between rooftops, pausing every few moments to take another scan through the streets, looking for a sign of anything that could lead me to where I'm needed. Is now a bad time to mention that I am afraid of heights??
I reach the edge of town before I notice something amiss on the roof of the house ahead of me. Slowing my pace down, I tiptoe to the edge of the roof I'm on before something jumps on me from the other rooftop, bringing me to the ground in a heap. I squeeze my eyes tightly closed waiting for something - anything - to happen. A few seconds pass but nothing happens. I carefully open my eyes to see a young man in a black cat outfit holding himself up over my body, careful not to crush me beneath himself. With beautiful green eyes and blue-black hair that goes nicely with his outfit, I'm momentarily taken away in my observations before my train of thought is broken.
"Hello beautiful." He flashes me a smile, his teeth blindingly white. "You must be the partner my kwami told me about."
Aaaand.. That's chapter two! I hope you all have enjoyed reading my story, this is just the beginning and I'm so excited for what's to come. Thanks again for reading!
