Chapter Four

"Girls! It's time for breakfast!" A cheerful voice snaps me out of my sleep.

"Raina..? Who was that?" I ask groggily, rubbing my eyes as I sit up in bed.

"I don't know.." She mumbles back, turning over in bed to try and fall back asleep.

"Raina! Come on, you gotta get up!" Fern claws at Raina's arm, trying to get her out of bed. I start to move to sit on the side of my bed.

"Fern, what time is it?" Raina asks slowly, sitting up in her bed.

"Uhh.. 7:30?" Fern sheepishly says, grinning at us from where she was floating.

"WHAT?!" Raina and I shout, stumbling down the ladders from our beds. I frantically put everything in my backpack as I realize... Raina and I didn't do any homework last night... I look at her panicked and see she is mirroring my expression. We shove everything in our backpacks and run around trying to make sure we don't forget anything. I throw a whole dragon fruit in my bag before getting some clothes out for the day.

        "Girls?" Our mom yells again.

"Sorry, Mom! We're running late, can we take it to go?" I yell back down as I jump into a pair of leggings and throw an oversized hoodie on. It might still be the end of summer, but I get cold when I'm tired..

"Fern, what happened? Why didn't our alarm go off?" Raina asks Fern, wincing as she frantically tries to brush her hair and hits a knot.

"Well.. Cyre and I mayy have turned it off.." She responds. I look at Cyre with wide eyes as she jumps in to defend Fern.

"But you girls were so tired! It was your first akuma attack and we wanted you to get some sleep!" Cyre butts in.

"We're sorry.." Fern pouts with big dragonfly eyes.

"It's okay guys, just please don't do it again." I pat Cyre's head and both kwamis look a little relieved that we aren't so angry.

"Raina I forgot to ask you, how'd the rest of the attack go? Sorry for having to leave right at the end." I apologize as I attempt to talk and brush my teeth at the same time.

"It was alright. OH, and Storm wanted me to tell you that you have a.. paw-some purr-sonality." Raina replies, and I choke on my toothpaste while I laugh.

"What does that even mean? Is that even a good thing?" I finish brushing my teeth as Raina joins me in the bathroom and laughs.

"Well it can't be that bad if he wanted me to tell you." She shrugs. I shrug along with her and we finish getting ready together.

"He must like cat puns, huh?" I joke as we snatch our bags and run downstairs.

"Here's your breakfast and lunch, girls. It isn't like you both to be so late." Our mom warns, giving us a disapproving stare.

"Sorry Mom! Alarm didn't go off." Raina responds while throwing some scones in her bag. I quickly pack up some crepes for Aleron to thank him for helping me the other day before we're both running out the door. Raina and I sprint to the crosswalk by our house and groan as we both barely miss the light. I decide to continuously push the cross button, I'm convinced the more you press it the faster the light will change for you. 'WAIT. WAIT. WAIT.' The crosswalk says, and Raina laughs as I start making a pattern out of it that we can dance to. I can hear Cyre and Fern laughing from our bags as we amuse ourselves while waiting. The light finally changes and we sprint across the school grounds to get inside of the school. As we run down the hall the final bell rings, making us officially late for class. The door is already open, so Raina and I run in and sit down at the closest table we can get to. I plop down next to Aleron and Raina plops down across from me next to Luke as we both realize where we're sitting. Hold up- where did all the desks go and why are we in 4-chair tables now? Looking around, I see other students look confused as well.

"Miss Adelynn, Raina, you are late." Mr. Monehugh sighs, marking some notes down on his attendance sheet. Raina and I shake our heads slightly and begin taking our school supplies out. I slowly take out my pencil case, careful to not take out any of my unfinished homework as the teacher finishes calling the rest of the names of students in the class.

"Are you okay?" Aleron looks over at me as I take out my pencil. I nod back at him, blinking my eyes a few times while I think of a response.

"Yeah I'm fine, our alarm just didn't go off this morning so we had to run here." I reply, looking over at him. Wow, he looks just like how I feel. With dark circles under his eyes and wearing a hoodie and jeans, it's evident he also didn't get much sleep. Wait- since when do I sit next to him at a table?

"As you all know, this seating arrangement is now permanent so please continue sitting where you currently are." Mr. Montehugh taps the board with the seat assignments written down. Overall it looks like only a few people were moved. Poor Arielle is still stuck next to Blaize, who looks very annoyed to have to be here. I guess that means I'm stuck next to Aleron, hopefully I'll be able to concentrate..

"Mr. Montehugh?" Celeste raises her hand, with Mr. Montehugh easily ignoring her.

"We have tables instead of desks now which will make group work much easier. Please get accustomed to who you are sitting with since you will be all working together for this next assignment." Mr. Montehugh announces before getting out a folder. Oh no- it's the homework folder! Raina and I share a quick panicked glace as Mr. Montehugh makes his way around the classroom collecting other student's homework assignments. He makes his way to our table before glancing at our empty table with a disappointed look. "Don't tell me all FOUR of you didn't do your homework last night.." He disapprovingly looks at the four of us and Raina and I give him sheepish looks while Aleron and Luka both continue staring down at their desks. Tsking, the teacher makes his way back to the front of the classroom to begin today's lesson. "Allow me to enlighten you all with your next homework assignment, hopefully some people won't forget this one as a group.." Mr. Montehugh gives Jasper a stack of papers to pass out and I begin to skim the instructions. It appears to be instructions for a group project and I look over at Raina with a devastated look. How are we meant to participate in a group if we can't even get our own homework done? I hear commotion from other tables as the other students excitedly begin planning their projects.

"Oh Aleron, before I forget, here." I take the packaged crepes out of my backpack, shoving them on his desk. "These are to thank you for helping me the other day." He takes them, giving me a small smile as he puts them in his backpack.

"Thanks Adelynn, but you didn't have to. I would have helped you either way." He replies as Luke interrupts.

"So I guess the four of us are working together." Luke stifles a yawn.

"Luke, are you okay? You seem really tired today." Raina looks over at him with concern. Awww, does she have a crush on him? Normally she doesn't care so much about other students.

"Yeah, I was just up really late last night. Only got four hours of sleep. How about you? You look pretty tired too." He blinks at her, and she starts blushing, looking down at her lap.

"Adelynn and I only got four hours also. Well, only four if we actually woke up on time." She replies, her eyes still glued to her lap.

"What about you Aleron? Are you okay?" I ask Aleron, concerned. He jumps as if he almost fell asleep and we woke him up.

"Uh, yeah. Only four hours for me too. What an odd coincidence.." he mumbles back. A frown appears on my face as I realize all four of us are sleep deprived and have to work together to get this project done. Plus, what are the chances of all of us only getting four hours of sleep? Maybe they got woken up from all the commotion with Metallion and couldn't sleep from the noise. We all attempt to read the instructions for the project and as I glance at the other three's faces I realize we are all having trouble comprehending what we're reading. My head starts to hurt, and I'm glad I always keep Tylenol and a snack in my bag in case I ever need it. I might need it later.. I turn my attention back to the page in front of me. Let's see.. We need to create a presentation connecting a historical lesson with something modern from today. That doesn't sound too bad.. right? The rubric lays out the specific details we need, including length (15 minutes) and minimum slides (10). Each member of the group must put in the same amount of work, etc, etc, etc. I see Raina rubbing her head, she must be getting a headache as well. She suddenly jumps, flinging her pencil across the room, and looks down at her lap before smiling and holding up a Tylenol and a piece of fruit. Hold up- since when does she carry Tylenol too? I look down at my backpack to see Cyre peeking out of a pocket and smiling and gesturing to Fern. I guess she gave a Tylneol to Fern to give to Raina. I nod and turn my attention back to the project while Raina trudges across the classroom to retrieve her pencil.

"Any thoughts on the project topic?" Aleron asks, looking at me. I blush and quickly look away under his heavy gaze. His eyes are so pretty with that green color and maybe it's because he's tired but I swear they look a little brighter than usual..

"How about those new superheroes from last night? Maybe we can find some history on them and make a presentation on their powers and how they got them" Luke suggests and I freeze. There's no way we could do that, then they would have to look more into them and if we aren't careful they could figure out it's us... Raina comes back to the table and I look at her.

"So Raina, Luke was thinking we could cover those new superheroes from last night and try to find some history on them.. What do you think?" I ask, my eyes pleading with her to say no.

"I uh.. Well.. I mean it COULD be an interesting topic but I'm not sure if we could get much information about it." She awkwardly scratches her neck, staring down at the piece of paper in front of her.

"I think it would be really cool! A reporter was able to interview Libelle and Phoenix last night, maybe we could interview them for our presentation too!" Luke exclaims and Aleron nods along with him. Wait - how did he-

"Wait, how did you know about that? It hasn't been published yet." Raina questions, narrowing her eyes in his direction. The reporter that interviewed us only does his reports in the evening news..

"Oh.. I, uh, heard it on the news this morning?" Luke shrugs and looks down at his hoodie. Aleron just nods again and avoids eye contact with me and Raina. I guess that could happen, after all, new superheroes probably make the news regardless if they had interviews or not. I look down at Aleron who looks uncomfortable before sighing.

"I guess we can use it. We might not be able to get a lot of information but surely we can get enough to talk for 15 minutes about it." I cave in, and spend the rest of the class absorbed in my thoughts of how Raina and I can get this to happen.

"One TWO three four FIVE - Raina, you're on the wrong side of the stage!" Victor sighs and she drops her arms as the music stops and we all look over her.

"Sorry.." she mutters and shuffles to the correct spot next to me. He glances over at the group and tells Sophie to move spots also. We also fidget awkwardly in our spots, waiting for Victor's next instruction.

"Alright, let's do this again. One, two-" Victor reaches up to start the music again when the door slams open and Mrs. Ralwag walks in.

"Victor, practice ended 10 minutes ago, why are you all still here?" She lifts an eyebrow as he looks behind him at the clock.

"Oh my bad, I didn't notice. See you all tomorrow." Waving his hand in dismissal, he shoos us out the door.

"Man, what a day." I groan and gulp down some water as Raina flops down on the floor and starts putting her shoes on.

"Guys! They're doing fencing again!" Arielle bursts through the door and runs over to the fieldhouse entrance. She turns back to us, wiggling her eyebrows as we both get up quickly to look. Luke and Blaize are fencing against each other while Aleron watches and intervenes to give comments. Blaize seems to get more and more frustrated as he is unable to get any points while Luke seems to easily be having the time of his life, teasing and bouncing around Blaize while allowing him to almost score a point before beating him to it.

"Luke, how are you suddenly so good at this? I beat you last time." Blaize whines when Luke scores another point.

"Well, let's just say I found a tigress and I'm excited about it." Luke takes off his mask and smirks. I look over at Raina, confused. What does finding a tigress mean? Raina looks a little disappointed.

"What exactly do you mean by that?" Aleron narrows his eyes in suspicion, looking over at Luke.

"Nothing you need to worry about. Now come on Blaize, HIT ME!" Luke smacks his chest and swiftly avoids another attack. Blaize lets out a frustrated groan as Luke keeps dodging his sword.

"Well, I got myself a fireball who I've been training extra hard for." Aleron states, stepping over to Luke and holding him down so Blaize can finally score a point. Hold up- does that mean Aleron already has a girlfriend? I guess it makes sense, he's a really popular guy, good looking, and all the girls swarm him. I would never be his type anyway..

"And what exactly do you mean by THAT?" Luke smirks while staring Aleron down.

"And I quote, nothing you need to worry about." Aleron smugly replies. Blaize looks between the two of them with confusion before shaking his head.

"You guys are weird. Are we done here?" Blaize asks, taking his mask off.

"Yeah, let's go clean up. Nice job today." Luke shakes Blaize's hand and the three of them walk away together. Arielle turns to look at us, her eyes wide.

"What was that about? Tigress? Fireball?" She ponders.

"Yeah I have NO idea." Raina responds. We pick up our backpacks and head downstairs to the locker room to change.

Raina and I's phones buzz as we head up to our room. As I unpack my backpack I open my phone to the group chat between Raina, Arielle and I.

Arielle: What are you guys up to this afternoon?

Me: Not much, just doing some homework. You?

Raina: Yeah, I might bake something too.

Arielle: Okay cool, did you want to hang out when we're done with homework?

Me: Maybe :)

Raina: Let me see how much longer my mom is using the oven for and I'll let you know.

Raina walks downstairs to check on mom in the kitchen while I organize mine and Raina's desks, preparing them for snack-and-homework time while Cyre and Fern fly around the room playing tag. Raina comes back upstairs and smiles at the two Kwamis before turning to me.

"Alright so Mom won't be finished using the oven until like 20 minutes from now. Should we have Arielle come here?" She runs her fingers through her hair and looks through her recipe ideas book for new ideas before settling on dragon fruit scones. Hopefully Cyre and Fern would like that combination.

"That's a good question. She can't see us, but then again we do have to go everywhere with you.." Fern holds a claw up to her face and ponders the possibility.

"Maybe just tell her another day would be better just to be safe." I respond, and Raina nods before tapping out her reply.

"Too bad you can't hang out with your partners.." Cyre nudges Fern with her wing and winks. They both giggle and fly over to the window to look outside.

"I wonder who it is. We COULD just try to find Phyzz and Thunder and ask them.." Fern looks over at us innocently.

"Guys come on, you know you can't do that! What if someone sees you?" Raina crosses her arms and gives them an unimpressed look. They both sigh dramatically and fly over to me.

"Adelynn, pleeeeease??" They both look at me with big eyes and pout, holding their wings and claws up in a pleading gesture.

"I'm sorry, but you heard Raina! It's too dangerous for you two to be out by yourselves." I groan. Fern and Cyre both sigh and flop onto a chair together in the middle of our room.

BANG

Raina and I's heads turn to the window by her bed so fast we almost get whiplash. Taika stands outside, looking down at Raina with a cheeky smile. She slowly walks over and opens the window.

"Uh.. hi.. Erm, sir. You're one of those superheroes right? Can I help you?" Raina pretends to not know who Taika is, even pretending to look a little scared at him. I glance over at Fern and Cyre and see them pretending to be stuffed animals. Eh, whatever works.

"Hi miss, my name is Taika. You have a classmate named Luke right?" He rubs his chin while thinking.

"Uh, yeah. Why?" Raina asks, confused.

"I ran into him earlier and he said you forgot your homework. I offered to find where you live and deliver it for him." Taika winks and hands her a packet. I snicker, of course Raina forgot her homework after forgetting to do last night's.

"Oh, thank you. I appreciate it." She mumbles, walking over to place it on her desk. Taika nods and looks around the room.

"You guys have a pretty nice room. I like the decorations." He points to the Christmas lights we have hanging around the ceiling.

"Yeah those are pretty cool. We can control them using a remote and they can do patterns, change colors.." She trails off. Taika cocks his head and looks at Raina deep in thought.

"I'm sorry, do you need something else?" Raina awkwardly crosses her arms, leading him back over to the window. Taika shakes his head.

"Ah, no. Sorry. Have a good afternoon!" Taika jumps out the window and bounces away using his giant stick thing.

"What was that? How did he know where we live?" I turn to Raina, joining her at the window.

"I don't know. It was nice of him to bring the homework, though." She closes the window while I look over at the two kwamis.

"Yeah. Oh, you guys are okay now." I giggle as Fern and Cyre give a big sigh of relief and fly back into the air.

"That was close!" Fern exclaims, rubbing her eyes.

"It hurt to keep myself from blinking." Cyre agrees. Raina and I walk over to her desk to look at what Taika dropped off.

"Hey, what's this?" I pick up a post-it note from the top of the first page.

Here's my number

Xxx-xxx-xxxx

-Luke

"Ooooh~" Cyre squeals, giving Fern a knowing look.

"What's that about?" Raina gestures between the two smirking kwamis.

"Nothing!" Fern sings as her and Cyre fly away giggling. I hand Raina the post-it note while she grabs her phone. Putting in Luke's number, her hand freezes. Well, no harm in making the decision for her! I reach over her shoulder and tap the call button.

"ADELYNN!" Raina screeches, pushing me away. Just as Raina is about to hang up Luke answers the phone.

        "Hello?" Luke asks.

"Oh, uh, hi Luke. It's Raina. I got your number from the post-it note." She stutters, slapping herself on the forehead. Fern snorts and we all look away from her due to the secondhand embarrassment. I decide to busy myself momentarily by going over to my desk with Cyre and listening in on the conversation.

"Oh yeah! I'm glad Taika gave it to you!" Luke laughs. "I happened to.. Pass by him earlier and realized that I didn't know where you and Adelynn lived, so he offered to find you." That's odd. Hopefully Taika wasn't wasting his time looking for so long...

"Well he did. So um, about the project. Should we meet up to discuss this more? The library is usually open until 10." Raina stutters again and I look over at her trying to silence my laugh. Fern and Cyre bury their heads in pillows to muffle their giggles.

"That's a good idea. Are you free tonight?" Luke asks, and I giggle, unable to conceal my voice and wiggle my eyebrows at her.

"What? It's just for the project, he isn't asking me out." Raina hisses and waves her hand at me. "Adelynn and I should be free at about 7. Does that work for you and Aleron?" She asks.

"Yeah that should be okay. I'll check with him and text you if anything changes now that I have your number." Raina looks at me and blushes, realizing that Luke has her phone number now too.

"Alright cool. Thanks. Um.. talk to you later?" Raina quickly hands up the phone and lets out a big breath.

"Soo~ You guys are hanging out, huh?" Cyre claps her wings together mischievously.

"Well, yeah. It's not hanging out though, it's for the project." I awkwardly scratch my head.

"Right, Well~ Let's get you girls ready!" Fern zips into Raina's closet and begins rummaging around while Cyre flies into our bathroom to look through our makeup.

"What's wrong with what we're wearing?" Raina looks down at her outfit and I look down at mine. What's wrong with leggings and hoodies?

"You must look presentable!" Fern shoots Raina a look of disapproval

"To go to the library?" I ask, raising my eyebrow in confusion.

"Oh, erm, well, Cyre?" Fern flies sheepishly over to Cyre in the bathroom.

"She's right. The library is.." Cyre pauses to think. "somewhere nice? Whatever, come on girls! We can only do so much before dinner and you need to leave after eating!" The kwamis discuss the proper clothing before settling on that we only need to change our hoodies. After much hassle Raina is wearing a pink off the shoulder shirt while I'm stuck in a blue ruffled top. While Raina and I get our things together, Fern and Cyre braid our hair. Maybe it's because they're small, but the two of them really have a knack for braiding. I look in the mirror on my desk and see Cyre adding feathers to the braids while Fern adds leaves to Raina's. Despite my raccoon eyes (covered with concealer now), I swear I look more ready for a date than a project meeting! I look back at Raina, and I can tell she's thinking the same thing. Obviously it isn't a date but I mean if it was... These outfits would be perfect for that.

"Girls! It's time for dinner!" Our mom shouts from downstairs and I hear chairs scraping as her and my dad take their seats at the table.

"Perfect timing! You guys go eat, we will wait up here." Fern exclaims, and her and Cyre go back to playing tag. Raina and I head downstairs to go eat and our parents give us weird looks when we sit down.

"Why the fancy look? Are you girls going anywhere?" Our dad asks, and Raina and I look over at each other.

"Not really, dad. We are just meeting with our group at the library after dinner to work on our project." I reply, and he nods before going back to eating his dinner. Thankfully neither Mom nor Dad asked further or else it would be a bit hard to explain. I mean, we can't exactly tell them kwamis decided on our look and insisted on what we have to wear. As we clean up the kitchen after eating, I see Raina put a few scones in a separate bag for Fern and I guess I should take some dragon fruit for Cyre too. I quietly take a dragon fruit out of the fridge and accidentally drop it on the floor. As fate would have it, it rolls right over to our parents who have their backs to us while doing dishes. Raina quickly walks over and kicks it back over to me as if nothing happened and they don't seem to notice. We make our way back upstairs to see Fern and Cyre waiting for us.

"Are you ready?" Cyre sings while we finish packing our bags. Raina throws a folder to her backpack and groans when it lands upside-down and spills all her papers on the floor. Stuffing them back in her bag, I take a quick look around the room.

"I guess that's it. Are we forgetting anything?" I ask. Satisfied, I close my backpack and join Raina by her desk. "I think I'm good. Ready to go?" I ask, and she nods. Fern and Cyre hide in our water bottle pouches and peek out excitedly.

"Alright, let's go!" Fern giggles. Raina and I walk downstairs to our front door, sharing the same thought: what is going to happen tonight?

Hehehe that's it for chapter four! I promise we have several other chapters we've written already but are finalizing before posting! Until next time!
