Chapter Eighteen

Shintaro opened his eyes groggily, waking to the feeling of surprise that he'd even gotten any sleep. As he opened his eyes, however, he had to shield them with his hand momentarily at the blinding light that lit up the tent. It was morning, and the sun was shining brightly outside. Shintaro could hear raindrops dripping off the trees and onto the roof of the tent, which meant the storm hadn't let up into early into the morning. The thunderclaps had effected his dreams, causing his mind to bring up a nightmare of his home being slowly destroyed by bombs and Darks.

Groggily, Shintaro sat up and rubbed his face. Yawning, he slipped out of his sleeping bag, rolled his shoulders in a stretch, and sat crisscross on top of his sleeping bag to comb his fingers through his hair.

Falte, Zeke, and Gabriel were all still asleep. Gabriel was still hidden underneath the folds of his sleeping bag, but the even rising and falling of his sides told Shintaro that he was sleeping. Zeke was lying on his back with a frown on his face, but somehow he was sleeping as well. Falte had his back to Shintaro, but he too was breathing too evenly to be awake.

Gradually, Shintaro began to hear noise from outside. There were sounds of metallic snaps, along with female voices that were talking to each other. That meant that the girls were already up and taking down their tent - but why this early in the morning? It seemed too early for Abby to have woken up because of how heavily she slept, especially when she was tired (Shintaro had no doubt that the girl's had gone through just as much trouble as the guys had.).

Standing up halfway so he wouldn't brush his head and shoulders against the ceiling of the tent, Shintaro smoothed down his T-Shirt and sweatpants. He moved toward the door of the tent, grabbed his shoes, slipped them over his feet, and unzipped the door to step outside.

Immediately, he was met with a strange, confusing scene that made him stand and watch in dumbfounded confusion. The girls' tent was blown over onto his side, the wall caving in while the metal rungs held it somewhat upright. The roof of it was caught in a low-hanging branch, suspending the tent a few feet off the ground. Amy was standing in the tree above the tent, her feet each on different branches that were thick enough to hold her. She was leaning forward and down toward the tent, folding her body almost in half, and trying to detach the fabric of the tent from the lower branch; but she was having trouble doing so in the weird position she was holding herself in. Linda was standing in front of the tent, her arms waving in exasperation as she shouted at Amy - "NO! Not like that! You're going to rip it! Don't just yank it off! You have to lift it! No- AMY!! STOP! ARGH, just STOP!" - in an irritated, impatient voice. Rachel was standing beside Nanami, who was rubbing her eyes in a groggy way. Rachel's face was a mix of slight annoyance (which was strange for her) and pity for Amy, who was grumbling and huffing in annoyance. Abby was standing aimlessly beside the two girls, her hands clasped together and hovering over her middle nervously. She looked very plainly like she wanted to help, but she didn't know what she'd be able to do without getting in the way. Ruby and Moon were standing to the left, underneath the branches of a tree, though it wasn't seeming to help them much. Water was dripping down onto them, but they weren't paying too much attention. The girls' backpacks were nowhere in sight, probably still in the half-suspended and torn down tent to keep dry. Shintaro gaped in stupidly at the girls.

And then noticed that they were all soaking wet. Their clothes were sticking to their bodies, their hair dripping with excess water, and their skin shiny with rain. Even their shoes were waterlogged, which was obviously uncomfortable for them.

"What the heck is going on here?" Zeke's voice asked in startled confusion from behind Shintaro, and he turned to find Zeke straightening up out of the tent with a confused expression.

Abby turned toward them at the sound of Zeke's voice, finally noticing that they were both there. She gave them a lopsided, nervous smile, spreading her palms upward in a small gesture toward the tent.

"The stupid storm decided to get our tent stuck in a tree which meant we have to get out of it and fix it but we haven't been able to this whole time and it's been almost two hours and the storm finally decided to go away in all it's smugness and now we're soaking wet and running off of three hours of sleep."

It took Shintaro a moment to realize that the grumbling, flat voice had come from Amy. She was still holding the tent and trying to pull it off the branch, water dripping from her short hair down onto her soaked shoulders. She definitely sounded tired, but she also sounded extremely miffed and angry. That probably meant that she would be grumpy for the rest of the day, which would probably make everyone else grumpy as well.

"OH MY GOSH, AMY, you're about to RIP IT," Linda cried in frustration. "DROP THE STUPID TENT AND LET ME TRY."

Amy huffed through her nose, opening her hands and leaning back against the trunk of the tree. She put her hands on her hips and stood above, eyeing Linda with a look that said, "Well? Go ahead, then."

Linda mimicked Amy's huff of annoyance, walking around to the trunk of the tree and peering up at the predicament. After assessing it for a few moments, she opened her hand, palm facing down. The tent's position began to wobble, and with a lift of Linda's hand, detached itself from the branch and landed neatly in a heap on the forest floor.

"YOU'RE TELLING ME YOU COULD HAVE DONE THAT THE WHOLE TIME?" Amy cried, throwing up her arms in exasperation. "SERIOUSLY? WHY DIDN'T YOU DO THAT BEFORE!?"

Linda tossed her arms right back at Amy. "It was too dark to do so before, idiot! And even if it was light enough for me to see, I still wouldn't be able to look at it because of how hard it was raining before! It's over with now, so you don't need to yell at me. Get down."

"Both of you calm down," Abby said sharply to the arguing girls, crossing her arms over her waterlogged shirt. "Arguing isn't going to get us anywhere. Get the bags, hang them the driest tree you can find, and start taking down the tent so we can get moving."

Amy grunted as she swung down from the tree, landing awkwardly on her feet due to the extra water weight she was carrying. She straightened, took the end of her T-Shirt, and wrung it out, sending water cascading down her legs.

"You've been awake for how long?" Shintaro asked in concern, stepping toward the tent to help get the bags out and suspended in a tree.

Thankfully, Rachel had a watch. She tipped her wrist back, wiping the surface of her clock before peering down at it. "It's 6:20 now, and we've been awake since 4:30... So two hours and a quarter." She smiled sheepishly at Shintaro.

"What the heck?" Gabriel asked from the doorway of the tent, where he was peeking out. "Why have you been awake that long, and why are you all soaking wet?"

Abby explained to Gabriel, but without the grumbling tone that Amy had used the first time. As Shintaro, Linda, and Amy hung the bags on a low hanging branch of a drier oak tree, Falte stepped out of the tent with a bewildered look - and Abby started her explanation over.

Falte couldn't stop a small smile that crept onto his face; but he quickly waved his hand in apology, trying to wipe it off his face. "I'm sorry. It's not funny. I shouldn't be laughing."

"No, it's NOT FUNNY," Amy said dangerously from her spot, wringing out the other side of her shirt. "I'm freaking wet and cold and tired and sore and I JUST WANT TO GO BACK TO SLEEP."

Falte covered his mouth with his hand, no doubt hiding another smile.

"IT'S NOT FUNNY, FALTE. I SWEAR TO YOU IF YOU LAUGH YOU WILL BE HANGING BY YOUR COLLAR WITH THOSE BACKPACKS."

With a frown, Linda swatted her fried on the shoulder. "He will not. Don't make empty threats."

"Oh, I would so do it," Amy grumbled, turning toward the tent to help take it down.

Falte dropped his hand from his mouth, a blank expression taking a hold of his face. But not long afterwards, another smile was tugging at the corners of his mouth.

Thankfully, Amy didn't notice.

Shintaro caught Zeke shaking his head at Linda and Amy.

"Girls," he muttered.
