Chapter Eighteen
Kai honestly was surprised to find out the Amy hadn't been joking about her house being nearby. After walking for about seven to ten minutes, the group came across a small hut that was so hidden by the forest, if you looked at it from afar, you wouldn't guess that it was a house. It was short, only one story, and a black-brown color. It was made out of wood, so it really was a hut.
Amy stopped at the door and rapped on it with her knuckles, making everyone look at her in confusion. She glanced back at them and shrugged. "I don't live by myself, and she likes to be warned before I just barge in."
"Coming!" called a voice from inside, followed by muffled footsteps running toward the door.
Kai, who was leaning on Chase, looked over at Linda, who seemed to have stiffened the slightest bit. Chase looked a bit wary as well, but everyone else seemed happy to finally have a place to rest for a little.
"Thanks for letting us raid your house," Falte said with a chuckle. "Hopefully we won't stay too long." He looked like he was going to say something else, but a warning look from Chase, Linda, Gabriel, and Kai told him not to mention what they were really doing in the woods with camping backpacks. On the way to the house, they told her that they were on their way back from a camping trip together.
The door handle turned, then the wooden door swung open slowly. A tall, slightly chubby young woman was standing in the doorway. Her eyes were large, friendly, and a creamy brown. Her mouth was tipped into a smile that became a little more confused but welcoming as she looked at the party at her doorstep. Her hair was long, just past her chest, wavy, and brown with streaks of pink through her bangs. She looked down at almost all of them, except Chase - who was her height - and Kai, who was just a tiny bit under her.
"Oh," she said in surprise, tipping her head to the side and studying the group before her. "You brought guests." She paused for a moment, then turned to Amy and swatted her arm. "Amy! The house isn't ready for guests! You didn't tell me we were having any! I didn't even know we had friends to invite in the first place!"
"Your version of a 'ready house' is literally not a speck of dust anywhere," Amy said, cocking her hip with a smile. "Besides, I wasn't expecting guests either. I found them wandering not far from here. Kai here miss-stepped and broke his ankle. I decided that they were fine, because I actually know her." She pointed to Linda with a broad grin.
"You... do?" the girl said, training her eyes on Linda, who was staring right back with an expression Kai couldn't read. Amy and the girl then shared a look (Amy was smiling though) that meant they knew something important.
"Yeah," Amy said, her voice softer. She gave the girl another meaningful look. "She's the friend I told you about." She glanced over at Linda, who was now looking at the girl with a wide-eyed stare.
"You're... Linda, then?" the girl asked, her voice shaking a little.
Kai wasn't sure what was going on, but all three of the girls - Amy, Linda, and the new girl - obviously had something in common. Now that he looked, Linda had the same facial structure as the girl in the doorway...
"Y-Yes," Linda said, and Kai was wrenched from his thoughts because how Linda stuttered for a moment. To him, Linda had always seemed like a person who was always sure of what she was going to say, like she had a script tucked somewhere in her head and she was reading off of them with normal emotions. "Th-That's me."
The girl opened her mouth to say something, then closed it again. She took a deep breath then tried again, but once more, nothing came out.
"Oh for heaven's sake," Amy said, slapping the girl on the arm playfully. "Linda, Rachel. Rachel, Linda. I do believe you two know each other." She grabbed Rachel's arm and pulled her out of the doorway toward Linda, who's bewildered look was getting more intense.
The throbbing in Kai's ankle was starting to get worse, but he didn't want to interrupt, because apparently Linda knew who this girl was.
Rachel, something in Kai's head whispered. He frowned at himself, then realized what that meant. He'd heard the name Rachel before. When he'd first met Linda, she'd told him her story. That was where he knew the name. Rachel was her twin sister's name. This had to be Linda's twin sister.
"You're... here," Rachel said softly, and at the same moment, Linda seemed to have what was happening down on her. Her shoulders slumped and she put her hands in her face, shaking her head a little.
"You're alive," Linda said after taking a few deep breaths. She had looked up from her hands and was staring at Rachel with a confused, happy, and relieved look. "How are you ... alive? I thought..."
Kai realized that Rachel was probably almost a foot taller than her older twin, and he had to hold back a small smile when Rachel stepped forward and let Linda melt into her hug. Linda barely reached her shoulders, so Rachel leaned down just a little.
Amy was grinning broadly, but when she caught Kai's eyes, she seemed to remember that they still had an injured teenager in their midst. "Hey, I'll let you guys catch up out here. I'm going to bring the rest of them inside and see what I can do for them." She patted Rachel's shoulder, then hurried through the open door with everyone but Linda on her heels.
Chase followed Amy to a couch that was set against the wall in what seemed to be the living room. There was a shelf facing the couch on the other wall with a TV set on top of it, and there were a few hanging pictures here and there. The walls were a plain white that seemed to make them glow.
"Here," Amy said, pointing to the couch. "He can sit there for now. Hold on, lemme get some pillow so he can keep his foot elevated." She turned toward a hallway that was to the directly in across from the front door and slightly right of the couch, then she was gone.
Literally.
There was a whoosh of air that blew through the room, followed by a zip sound, and then Amy was simply gone. Kai could hardly tell, but he swore that he saw quick movement flash down the hallway.
Chase blinked at the spot where Amy had been in bewilderment. "What just happened? Can she teleport, or something?" He glanced around him in confusion as Kai slipped off his backpack and sat down with a relieved sigh. He would lean back when Amy came back with the pillows.
Falte was gaping at the hallway, but there was an excited smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Did you see that?" he said a moment later, waving his hands in excitement.
"Well, in a way, no," Chase said. "How did she do that, and what did she even do?"
Kai wasn't exactly sure either, but he wasn't really paying attention. He was tired and thirsty and his ankle was starting to really hurt again. He hoped Amy had a cast or an splint hidden somewhere in her house.
There was another zip, then Amy was standing in front of them again, holding two pillows that matched the couch. Chase jumped back in shock, while Falte broke into a wider grin. Kai simply stared at Amy in confusion as she stacked the pillows on top of each other at the foot of the couch.
"What?" Chase muttered, shaking his head in confusion.
Amy looked up at him with raised eyebrows, then it seemed to dawn on her that she had done something inhuman. "Oh, that's normal with me. I can move faster than light and sound, and I use it to my advantage a lot." She said it like it was an every day thing, which made Chase shake his head again.
"I knew it!" Falte cried happily. "That's amazing! Do you have a limit? Do you ever get tired? Does it come with enhanced stamina? How do you do it? Do you just run like a normal person? How do you control it?"
"I don't know, yes, maybe, I just think about how fast I want to go, yes, and I just do," Amy said in the same quick paced tone that Falte had used. "You guys can set your backpacks in the hallway. I have no idea where you're going to sleep, but I'll figure it out. I can get you guys some water, too."
Kai laid back against the soft couch, grateful that Linda had a friend that wasn't in their group and they had miraculously found. Before he knew it, he was dreaming.
