Chapter One

Kai Watson was a fine little boy. He did what he was told, he used his manners, and he got good grades in school. He was tall, but he was a little too skinny for ten year old. His mother tried not to worry about it, however. His hair was a dark black and often a tangled mess. Kai's mother never let it go past his ears, but it stayed a mess. His eyes were a dark brown, like his father's. He had is own room, with two shelves full of book that he never read. He wasn't much of a bookworm, unlike his dad. His bed was always neat, and he allowed neither of his parents to sit on it. He often liked to draw, though he wasn't the greatest at it, to the amusement of his parents.

Kai's mother, Haley, was a sweet, kindhearted woman. Her hair was long, thin, and straight. It was a bright blonde, almost white. Her eyes were a pearl blue, and her smile could light up the darkest alley. She was short for a woman, and her hands were tinier than Kai's. Haley didn't mind reading or drawing, but she didn't do it much. She mostly painted what she felt, which was mostly happy and caring. Her paintings were splashes of bright colors here and there.

Kai's father, Falte, (fault-ay) was the bookworm of the family. He was kind and stubborn, and loved his family dearly. His hair was a darkish brown, and he let it grow down to his shoulders. He often kept it in a ponytail. He was short for a man, and Haley often teamed up with Kai to tease him about it. Falte worked at a library close to them, and he worked all day shifts, so he wasn't home during the day unless the library was closed. Falte read the all the books that they had in the house more than once, and helped Haley often with her paintings. Thankfully, he didn't cook. He had tried one time, and the whole family had agreed that it was nasty.

The whole family lived normal, fun-filled lives. Nothing too bad seemed to happen in the town that they lived in. Only a few street crimes that the cops could quickly take care of.

Kai would have never guessed that the worst thing possible would happen to him on the day of his mother's birthday.

Kai Watson woke up to the smell of Crispy Cream donuts and rubbed his eyes. He sat up and yawned, then threw his blankets aside to swing his legs over the side of his bed. He rubbed his eyes again then stood up, turning around immediately to make his bed.

The smell of donuts wafted again into his nose and he smiled. Haley must have gotten donuts for herself and him. It was her birthday, after all.

Kai opened his door and walked down the hallway, pulling off his socks and letting his bare feet touch the cold, hardwood floor. He threw the socks in the hamper and ruffled his own hair.

"What's breakfast?" he called down the hallway, even though he knew what it was. "It smells good."

Haley called back: "I got us some chocolate doughnuts. Dad already had some. He's at work now."

Kai walked out into the living room and passed through the doorway to the kitchen, spotting his mother standing in front of her calendar.

"Dad has tomorrow off," his mother said, tapping the calendar. "He'll be able to be with us."

Kai slipped behind her and gave her a backward hug. "Happy birthday," he said sweetly in her ear. "How many donuts can I have?"

"Two, if you want," Haley answered with a smile, turning around when Kai let go of her.

"I think I'll have one," muttered Kai. "I'm not too hungry." He retreated to the doughnut box on the counter, pulling off a napkin and placing one doughnut on it.

"Eat at the table," Haley reminded him.

"I will," Kai laughed. "After all, I've been taught to by the best mother." He sat down and began eating the savory doughnut.

Haley came up behind him. "Good thing it's Saturday. Otherwise you would have been gone by now."

Kai agreed by nodding. "I like staying home. School is okay, but I'd rather be home." He finished his doughnut and stood up. "I'm going to ride my bike, though. I should be back soon."

Haley smiled. "Be careful." Then she pulled him into a hug. "You're getting so big. You're just my amazing little boy."

"Mom, it's you're birthday, not mine," he laughed, but hugged her back. "I won't be out for long." He jumped as his mother leaned in and kissed his cheek. "Eww, Mom!"

Haley only laughed. "You're still young at heart, like your dad." She ruffled his hair then retreated to the kitchen before her son could lecture her about not kissing his cheek.

Kai rolled his brown eyes and fled to his room. He put on his cap that he'd gotten from Falte and pulled on some socks. Slipping on his sneakers while hopping down the hall, he called goodbye to his mother. "Happy birthday!" he said again before he dashed outside. "See you later!"

Swinging his legs over the bike, he smiled. He loved riding outside. Thankfully, his parents were generous enough to let him go out pretty far. He rolled down the driveway and began pedaling.

Kai returned home hot and sweaty, but there was something wrong. He knew as soon as he pulled back into the driveway. Though there weren't any cars in the driveway, Kai could tell something was wrong - the light to his mother's painting room wasn't on. It was where she usually was during the day, unless she was busy.

Kai, suspicious but telling himself that everything was probably fine, parked his bike where it normally went and opened the door, walking inside. "Mom?" he called, but got no reply.

At least from his mother.

When he rounded the corner, a man in a SWAT looking suit stepped out and placed the front of a rifle on his chest.

"Don't move," the man said harshly, eyeing him under a dark plastic screen.

"NO! DON'T HURT HIM!" the voice of his mother cried, and Kai gasped. He looked around the man and spotted another man with a pistol to his mother's head. She was crouched on her knees with her hands held behind her back by yet another man.

"Mom!" Kai screamed. "Who do you think you are?" he snapped foolishly at the man holding him back. "You think you can barge in here and -" Kai was cut off by the man pushing him back with his gun.

"Hush, or I shoot," the man stuttered, sounding like he didn't want to, but also sounding like he was trying to be intimidating and failing. His hands were trembling - though the man hid it well enough.

"Now, now," said a voice from outside the kitchen. A tall man in a formal suit came into the room. His eyes were the color of blood, making Kai shiver. His hair was as dark as the depths of the oceans, and when he smiled, his canine teeth were pointed far too sharp to be normal. "I don't want him dead. Just his mother. She isn't necessary."

Kai gasped and took a step forward, driving the man with the gun on him back. "NO! Don't kill her! Don't hurt us! What do YOU WANT?!" His voice cracked and he met his mother's eyes. Haley shook her head.

Don't seem like a threat, she mouthed. Thank goodness she'd taught Kai how to lip-read. That will only make them shoot.

Kai took a shuddering breath. "Please don't hurt her." He locked eyes with the tall man. "Please, do want you want to me. Not her."

Haley's eyes widened, and she finally found her voice. "What?! Kai, no! Don't make sacrifices like that!" Tears welled in her eyes, and the man pushed the gun harder.

"She's going to die anyway," he said to Kai, and Kai barely managed to hold his punch back.

The man in the suit waved his hand. "All of you, hush. I'm speaking." The men shut up immediately, and the tall man took a step forward, towards Kai. "Boy, you have no say in this. Do not speak a word, or her death will be long and painful."

He suddenly felt so much fear that Kai sealed his mouth shut, although he wanted to scream "No! Don't kill her! I already told you to do what you want to me! Let her go!" His brown eyes filled with tears as the man smiled at Kai.

"Good boy," he praised smugly. Then he leaned up and turned around. "Kill her." He waved his hand at the two men holding her. The one holding her hands let go and stood back, while the other braced his finger over the trigger of his pistol.

Kai wanted to scream, to cry, to struggle, to do ANYTHING. But he felt like he couldn't, like the man in the suit had terrified him into doing his will. Kai's mouth remained shut, however, and he couldn't move. He only watched as the man took a deep breath and -

Haley caught her son's eyes one last time as tears spilled down her face. Her blue eyes were filled with fear, but mostly sadness. She would never get to see her son grow up to be a great young man. She would never get to say goodbye to her husband. She would never get to hold them both tightly and say that she loved them. She would never live again.

Kai finally made a noise as the man pulled the trigger. He screamed and screamed, but didn't move, as the bullet hit his mother's head and she jerked sideways. Her eyes closed and her body flopped to the side, blood immediately spilling out from her skull.

Kai yelled and lifted one hand to push the gun trapping him away. The man in the suit caught his wrist and tsked at him, waving his free finger.

"No, no, boy," he scolded, the smugness never ceasing to shine through his voice. "That's unacceptable. I'm your master now, and you must do what I say." He straightened and pulled Kai close to his side, then leaned into his face. "Don't disobey me, or you will feel more pain than you ever have."

Kai wasn't really listening to him. He had the image of his mother stuck in his head, and it wouldn't stop replaying. Tears slid down his face and he sobbed openly. He couldn't look back at her body, otherwise he'd probably throw up. He kept his eyes locked on the tall man's red ones.

"Do I make myself clear?" the man holding Kai said, the smile never leaving his face. Kai could only nod, his sobs echoing through the whole house. What about his father? Where was he? Did they kill him, too? At the library? What if he was alive? Would he come home to his dead wife and son being held captive by these men? Would he ever come home? What would he even come home to?

"Good," the man praised, ruffling his hair.

Kai wanted to scream at him. He had no right to do that. That was something only his parents could do.

"Are you ready to come with me? To serve me?" the man said. "I have good plans for you, Kai Watson..."

~

Here's the first chappy! I hope you all like this. This is a kind of late warning, but this will have lots of gore in it. I am one who can handle gore pretty well, and I have weird times where I'm just like "This person needs to get badly hurt. I'ma do it."

Hope you all enjoy!

Peace!!~~
