Discovery
After returning to the house for the night, Harry and Hermione took a bath each before joining the girls and Lewis in the living room to sleep the rest of the night away.
Or that was the plan, sadly all them were too awake to try and sleep. So they asked Harry and Hermione questions about magic and how they learned to control it.
A smile graced their lips as they remember Hogwarts and Hermione decides to go first.
"Before we can tell you about where we went to learn about Magic and how to use it, we have to go back and explain the different categories of magicals.
"There's the Muggleborn, Squib, Half-Bloods and Purebloods. I'm a Muggleborn, what that means is that I was the first in my family to be born with magic from non-magical parents. Half-Bloods are children who have one magical parent and one Muggle parent, or both parents are magical but one is a Muggleborn, which is Harry's case."
"True, my father was a Pureblood and my mother was a Muggleborn. Making me a Half-Blood." Harry tells them.
"Purebloods are those whose lineage can be traced man generations back and have no Muggle or Muggleborn blood within them. Squibs are basically the opposite of a Muggleborn."
"How do you mean?" Emma asks.
"A Squib is a child born to two magical parents, but has no magic whatsoever. Most, if not all the time, this happens with Purebloods as parents. When it does, the parents send the child to the Muggle world, which is the better of the scenarios. The worst of the scenarios is the parents kill the child to hide the shame and stain of their family."
"The would kill their own child!?" Rikki explodes, only for the two magicals to nod. "What's wrong with them?"
Harry took over for Hermione. "To them, having a Squib in the family is not only shameful, but dishonorable to the extreme. Purebloods believe that because their blood has been kept 'pure' they are better than anyone else."
Lewis suddenly turned a green color. "When you say 'pure' do you mean..." he couldn't finish the sentence. Thankfully, Harry knew what he meant.
"Yes. They kept their blood pure by inbreeding." When he confirmed their suspicions, Emma quickly got up and ran to the tunnel, retching on the ground. Rikki was pale and Cleo and Lewis were sickly green as they stared at Harry.
Harry waited for Emma to return and the others to calm down before continuing. "They believe that if you aren't a Pureblood, then you're nothing but filth that should be exterminated. Hermione, being a Muggleborn, suffered a lot of...racism because of it. One Pureblood kid called her a Mudblood, which is the equivalent of calling a colored person the N word.
"Muggleborns are handicapped before stepping foot into the magical world. They enter the wizarding world at eleven, while Purebloods have been brought up in that lifestyle. Even some Half-Bloods have it hard, myself included."
Hermione looked at him with a smile and a shake of her head.
"I am...curious about something." Emma states and takes a gulp of breath, "are there any magical consequences due to the inbreeding?"
"You ask the very obvious yet hard question Emma," The voice of Andromeda says, startling them all, as she joins them after failing in her attempts to sleep. "The answer would be yes. Because of so many generations of inbreeding, many if not all Pureblooded families have a curse upon them.
"The Greengrass family for example, can only have daughters and their daughters rarely, if at all make it pass thirty. The Malfoy's can only have one child. A son to be exact, and then there's the Blacks. They suffer from the Black Madness, meaning they go insane as they grow and get older."
"You say the last one like you've witnessed it." Rikki points out, fearing she would confirm it.
"I wasn't just a witness...I was on the receiving end of such insanity." Andromeda says and turns to Teddy, a sad look on her eyes and this causes the group's eyes to widen.
"You saw someone with the Black Madness kill a loved one didn't you?" Cleo asks with some boldness and red tinge on her cheeks.
"No. I didn't need to. I know who did it." The group didn't speak, not wanting to ask her for more. To push her for more when it's obvious it hurts her but she looks at them anyway. "My sister killed my daughter. Her own niece."
Shock marred their faces at her revelation.
"But...that would mean..." Rikki says but doesn't finish.
"Yes. I'm a Black by blood."
The silence that followed was heavy, no one wanted to break it. As a silent agreement, they all laid down for the night after Andromeda had left to her room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Morning came, the smell of breakfast waking up the sleeping group in the living room who made their way to the kitchen and see Harry cooking while Teddy ate his breakfast.
"Good morning. Breakfast is almost ready." Harry says as he keeps cooking before plating the food and setting it on the table. Hermione walks over to Teddy and cleans Teddy's messy face. "Please sit and help yourself."
Needing no other incentive, they all sit and start to fill their plates with the assortment of food and fruits.
"Harry this is delicious mate!" Lewis says as he takes a bit, the girls nodding in approval. Andromeda joins them a moment after with a small smile on her face, but the bags under her eyes told a different story. Not wanting to bring it up, Lewis instead says "good morning Andromeda."
"Good morning Lewis, I hope you all slept well." They all nod as an answer as they eat and Harry joins them. With a wave of his wand, the pots and pans started to get washed, dried and put away. Andromeda chuckled and shook her head in humor.
The group looked on in awe. Eyes wide and their hands frozen in mid air as they watch. Harry chuckles as he eats and helps Teddy eat as well.
"Could you tell us where you learned magic?" Rikki speaks after a moment. Emma and Cleo give her none to subtle looks and shake their head.
"We learned how to use and control our magic in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It's a castle located somewhere in northern Scotland." Harry answers and take a drink of his juice, "we start our education at eleven years of age, some at twelve and it lasts seven years."
"Only seven years? Shouldn't it last longer?" Cleo asks with Lewis and Emma nodding while Rikki just rolls her eyes and keeps eating.
"I asked myself the same thing. As it turns out, Hogwarts curriculum has changed a lot over the years. So much so that classes that would've helped a lot of Muggleborns and opened up more job opportunities have been all but forbidden and forgotten." Hermione says, going into lecture mode. "Some of those classes would've been an Introduction Into the Wizarding World, Etiquette, even how to use ink and quill correctly. There were even classes about the different kinds of rituals; what they do, how to do them and when.
"Other classes were Alchemy, Musical Arts, Languages, even some sports." The expressions on the group's faces were almost hilarious, but they let Hermione continue. "Sadly, because of...well Muggleborns, those classes and traditions aren't taught anymore."
"But why? Most of those classes sound amazing," Cleo says and the others nod, even Rikki.
"Because by the time Muggleborns are introduced into the Wizarding world, they already believe that such things are horrible, evil and Dark. Think about it, you're raised to be religious and about to enter a magical world." Hermione states, not needing to finish the sentence after seeing the understanding in their faces.
They ate in silence and once done, Hermione waved her wand and the dishes cleaned and put themselves away.
"I'll never get used to that." Rikki says with a smile, the others nodding.
"Right. So, I don't believe I have to tell you to keep our magic and existence a secret," Harry begins as they shake their heads in agreement. "We will share the books and scrolls but only when we are together and here as a group. It's too risky to do so anywhere else." The girls and Lewis look at one another and nod in agreement after a moment. "Lastly, we would like to know anything you guys already know about the Moon Pool."
"We have some stuff and information back at my place. We can go over that and anything else there." Cleo says.
This however, causes Harry and Hermione to be a bit wary. It's not that they don't trust them; but the fact that said information and items could be taken, lost or misplaced.
Andromeda spoke before they could voice their concerns. "How about I follow you all over towards Cleo's house? That way I know where you're going to be and I can take Teddy for a ride as well."
"Vroom vroom!" Teddy says and claps, making everyone laugh.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Half an hour later, everyone headed towards Cleo's house. Andromeda driving a safe distance behind them.
About another twenty five minutes, they arrive at Cleo's house and park their bikes while Andromeda waves at them and drives away.
"Dad, I'm home!" Cleo says as she opens the door and a man comes to greet her. After the hug, the man stepped back and saw two new faces in the group before looking at Cleo. "These are Harry and Hermione. They are new here and we became pretty good friends rather quickly."
"Well, welcome to the Sertori household."
"Thanks you Mr. Sertori. Cleo invited us over for a couple of hours." Hermione says after shaking his hand.
"Oh of course, come on in. Would you like anything to drink?"
"Water would be great."
After being given bottles of water and their straws, they headed to Cleo's room only to find another girl already in there, looking inside the drawers.
"Kim! What are you doing in my room?"
The girl, Kim, simply turned around to her sister and notices the group of people behind the door. "Looking for a top Cleo, duh."
"Get out!"
Kim simply rolls her eyes and gets out. However she stops at noticing two new faces, or more specifically, the emerald eye boy staring back at her with a raised brow. Kim freezes for a moment before running downstairs, a blush on her face.
Shrugging, Harry enters the room and closes the door behind him. As an extra precaution, he cast a silencing charm on the door so no one could hear in on them but they could hear what happens outside of the room.
While he was doing that, the girls had taken out and set up the information for everyone to see. Along with the picture of a young girl.
"Who is that?" Hermione asks as Cleo puts the picture on the board with a magnet.
"This is Gracie. She was one of the original mermaids."
"Like Ms. Chatham?"
"Yes, they were friends."
"Okay! So what we know out of all of this is that the Moon Pool is connected to the moon and the planets themselves. What we don't know is how or why other than 'magic'. For example, the girls got new powers during a Super Moon."
Hermione looked at the charts and information and calculations. "It's connected because Mako Island was formed due to a piece of a comet crashing down on earth." Lewis turned to her with wide eyes and she shrugs, "we did some research of our own."
"Right...so Mako was formed because of an asteroid...I guess that's not too farfetched of a theory."
"Where did you get all of this from?" Harry asks as he looks at the star chart.
"A man who had a relationship with Gracie. He tried to find how it happened, along with a way for her to change back. He never did and Gracie broke it off." Cleo states sadly while fiddling with her necklace.
Harry's eyes move to the picture and back at Cleo. "She's wearing the same necklace."
"That's because it was hers," Emma says. "I found exploring the Moon Pool for any explanation as to how we got our powers. After someone almost stealing it, I decided to give it to Cleo."
"If that's the case...should you really have that picture out in the open?" Harry asks.
"No one comes in my room." Cleo states only to receive a raised brow from both Harry and Hermione. "Okay maybe Kim does, even though she's not supposed to."
"You should hide it, that girl has the troublemaker look to her and not in a good way." Harry states and before he could say more, he hears voices outside the door.
"I can't hear anything! What are they doing!" Came Kim's irritated voice.
"I'm sure they're studying. Maybe I should knock?"
Harry's eyes narrow when he recognizes Charlotte's voice and before he could do anything, Cleo opens the door.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I told you to take it down Cleo!"
"How was I supposed to know that Gracie was Charlotte's grandmother?!"
"Well she is. Now she has that picture and will more than likely start her own little investigation and maybe ask Lewis for help!"
Said boy looks at Harry with wide eyes. "I'd never betray the girl's secret! Not even for my girlfriend!"
Harry could only shake his head in frustration. "Hermione help me out here."
"The best you girls can do is hide all of this. Right now and not leave anything in plain sight or otherwise."
"It's not like she's going to just barge in and take anything from Cleo's room!" Rikki states, not knowing just how wrong she was.
