Chapter 5
After the first half of the school day, I made my way to the rooftop of the school building, as it tends to be a popular place to hang out in school whenever a break occurred, or a good place to hide if you were a loner. It's something I would know from first-hand experience back when I was reluctant to fully integrate with Illya and her friends.
There could be a chance that Nanoha, Arisa, and Suzuka were up there but there was also the chance that they were spending their lunch in the classroom or the cafeteria. The bento I carried with me was one that I made personally, and I also made Nanoha's bento for her as well earlier. Entering the rooftop area and passing through the door, I found that it was indeed a populated area with quite a few students playing as well as socializing, something to be expected. To my surprise, I did in fact manage to find Nanoha, Arisa, and Suzuka and they had seemingly just arrived.
"Hey! Nanoha-chan!" I waved as I ran over to the three of them. "Kuro-chan!" Nanoha looked up from where she had just sat down, only to find me jogging in her direction to join them at their spot. Nanoha scooted from her spot closer to Arisa, giving me more room to sit at the edge of the bench. "Hey, Kuro-chan. Earlier when I was in class, our teacher gave us a talk about the different jobs in Uminari City. In the end, she said that we should think a little bit about what we want to be in the future." Nanoha explained to which I made sure to listen.
"Not everyone knows what their future is going to be like, some people want to follow in the footsteps of their parents or older siblings and other people want to make their own path and many more people don't have an idea on what they want to be. I'd say it's fine either way." I shrug casually, opening my bento and grabbing my chopsticks to take a bite from it. "I see... but I still want to know anyways. Arisa, Suzuka, Kuro, do you guys have a good idea about what you'll be when you grow up?" Nanoha asked to the three of us.
It was Arisa who was first to answer. "Hmmm, well mom and dad both run a company. I guess I'd have to study really hard if I want to take over." Suzuka was the next to answer Nanoha's question. "I like machines, so I'm considering an engineering specialty." Suzuka replied. Wait a second, aren't these two jobs high paying and wealthy jobs that only the top 1 percent of Japan or highly qualified and educated personnel could have?
I've been exposed to my fair share of wealthy people like mama, Rin-san, and Luvia-san, but even I'm impressed. Then again, this is a private school so even the most ordinary student here had a high percentage of inheriting a business. "As for me, I just want to go into a good university. I haven't thought of a major, but I'll find an answer eventually." I shrug, giving a typical textbook answer. "I see..." Nanoha sighs at our answers. "You three already having some ideas is pretty amazing." Nanoha comments with a heavy undertone of self-deprecation. "But Nanoha, won't you inherit Cafe Midoriya?" Arisa asked to Nanoha, proving my point.
Nanoha nods to Arisa, replying "That's one of my visions for the future but... I have a feeling that there's something else I want to do. I want to be helpful, or useful. But would I even be successful? I don't have any special traits or talents...." Nanoha's mood begins to change into a melancholier one, though it's quickly interrupted by Arisa throwing a lemon landing straight on Nanoha's face.
"You idiot! Don't say that about yourself!" Arisa shouts with outrage. "That's right, I'm sure there is something only you could do, Nanoha. You said you wanted to help people, there's lots of jobs for that." Suzuka adds. "In the first place..." Arisa points dramatically in Nanoha's direction. "Your math and science grades are better than mine! So which mouth is blabbering that she has no talents at all, huh?" Arisa rants to Nanoha, rushing over to Nanoha before pulling onto Nanoha's face. "But I'm not good at Japanese and I'm terrible at P.E!" Nanoha shouts in response to Arisa's antics. "Both of you.... stop it... Come on... Come on already!" Suzuka nervously attempts to interject, only for it to fail. "Kuro-chan, please help stop them..." Suzuka pulled onto the sleeves of my shirt, though I turned towards the view of the ocean. "This place is really pretty; I should make a trip to the beach when I get the chance." I comment casually, pretending as if I didn't notice Nanoha and Arisa. "K-k-k Kuro-chan!!!" Suzuka shouts in despair.
Soon after lunch break was finished as well as the second half of classes for the day, the bell range and I was eventually able to meet up with Nanoha and her friends once again. After exiting the school building, the four of us made our way through the park, taking a more scenic route to get back home. "You were awesome in dodgeball today, Suzuka!" Arisa praised. "Yeah, she was really awesome!" Nanoha says in agreement. "So, you're not just some damsel in distress, huh? Not bad. Too bad I wasn't there." I also comment in praise. "Oh.... not at all..." Suzuka begins to blush. A woman with a dog begins to pass by our group, though the dog turns back to face the four of us and begins barking. "Be quiet!" Arisa shouts in English.
As we continued our stroll, Arisa runs ahead before turning back to us. "Over here, if we cut through here, it's a shortcut." Arisa says, pointing out a different path. "Really?" asks Suzuka as she turns to face the way that Arisa was pointing. "The path is a bit rough though." Arisa warns. The four of us proceeded to head through the new path that Arisa pointed out through the park. I turn to see Nanoha pausing in place, with an expression as if she had just spotted a ghost. "Something wrong?" Suzuka asks out of concern. "Nanoha?" Arisa adds. "No, it's nothing. Sorry." Nanoha smiles nervously, shaking her head at the questions, I narrow my eyes in doubt at this, but I remain silent. "Are you alright?" Suzuka asks, Nanoha replies with a nod. "Then let's go!" Arisa declares with a bold smile.
As we begin to proceed forward Nanoha pauses in her steps once again. "If you need to go to the bathroom, you might be out of luck. They're a bit far away. There are plenty of trees and bushes here, so I'll look away." I point out sarcastically. "That's not it, Kuro-chan!" Nanoha shouts with a pout, stomping one of her feet onto the ground, she begins to blush. "I just thought I heard something. Didn't you guys hear anything? Like a voice." Nanoha explains. "Not really." Arisa says. "I don't think I heard anything." Suzuka also adds. The four of us begin to look around our surroundings, I discreetly reinforce my vision and activate Archer's Hawkeye skill. In the distance, I spot an injured ferret. "This way!" I shout to Nanoha and her friends, Nanoha begins to rush ahead while the rest of us followed. "Kuro-chan's right, I think it came from this way!" Nanoha says before we eventually arrived at the sight of the injured ferret.
The ferret lifted its head, only to reveal a red stone lying under it. "What's wrong!? Running off so suddenly like that." Arisa asks as she and Suzuka catch up to the rest of us. "Look, I think it's an animal. And it's injured." Suzuka says with concern. Nanoha, Arisa, and Suzuka begin discussing their possible plans for the ferret while I turn to face it directly. The ferret appeared to be familiar to me, yet I couldn't exactly remember why. "Kuro-chan, you're here too." A voice begins to sound in my head. "What- who-" My eyes widen in surprise at the voice that appeared in my head. Telepathy. That had to be what that was. Was it Yuuno from yesterday?
"What is it, Kuro-chan?" Nanoha asks. "It's nothing, anyway we should head to the vet's office, right? Do you guys know where one might be?" I ask to the three of them. "I know, I'll try calling home!" Suzuka says, grabbing her cellphone. "We better get there fast; it doesn't look like it's in good condition." Arisa says. Nanoha picks up both the ferret and the stone, the animal quickly closing its eyes. After eventually getting directions to the nearest vet clinic, the four of us rushed to there with immediate haste.
As our names were called for an appointment, we quickly headed to the room. A woman in a lab coat takes the ferret from Nanoha's hands and begins doing basic treatment and diagnosis while the rest of us waited in place. Nanoha, Suzuka, and Arisa each showing a clear mood of worry and concern. "The wounds weren't that bad, but it seems to be very weak right now. It might have been on its own for a while." The woman described to us. "Arigatogozaimasu!" The four of us say in unison. "It's no problem!" The doctor replied with a kind smile.
"Doctor, this is a ferret, right? I wonder if it was someone's pet?" Arisa asks as we take a closer look at the animal. "Is it? If it is, it's a breed I've never seen before. And on its collar.... Is this a gem?" The doctor attempts to reach toward it in curiosity before being interrupted by the ferret waking up. The ferret begins to look around the room, turning to each of us, though it's gaze lingers a bit longer on both Nanoha and I, though most of its attention was focused on Nanoha. "Nanoha, it's looking at you." Arisa points out with a whisper. "Oh right, um.... uh...." Nanoha slowly and nervously extends her finger to the ferret before it begins to give her finger a lick. After that, it curled back up and fell asleep once again.
"It's best to let it rest for a while, so I'll take care of it until tomorrow. Sound good?" The doctor says to us. Nanoha turns to the three of us for confirmation before we all turn to the doctor. "Yes, please do!" We say in unison. "So just come by tomorrow to see how it's doing." The doctor adds. "We will!" We reply. "Oh no, it's time for cram school!" Arisa exclaims in worry. "You're right!" Suzuka says. "Then doctor, excuse us... We'll be back tomorrow!" Nanoha says before the four of us head out of the clinic, we wave to the doctor who waves back at us.
" Nanoha-chan, I'll see you at home." I wave to Nanoha. "Right, I'll be back." Nanoha replies with a smile before I go my seperate ways from the three of them. Upon arriving at the Takamachi household I found that it was mostly empty. It seemed that Nanoha's parents were still at the cafe. Heading to Nanoha's bedroom, I change my outfit by projecting a kendo uniform and make my way to the dojo of the Takamachi household where I hear the sounds of grunting and loud noises between Kyoya Takamachi and Miyuki Takamachi.
"Nii-san, is this how I do it?"
"You're good but move slower and adjust your form. Hold it like this and try to match your movements with mine."
"Ah~ You're right, I'm getting the hang of this."
"That's right, you're doing good, Miyuki. Keep going just like that."
"I want to work as hard as I can to satisfy you."
"Your skill is already improving quite a bit."
"I'm starting to get exhausted nii-san, there's no way I could keep up with you."
"You did a good job. It's my turn now."
Upon entering the room, I spot Kyo-nii demonstrating different forms of the Takamachi style swordsmanship to Miyuki. Yes, what they were doing just now was training their swordsmanship skills, it should have been obvious.
"Kyo-nii sensei. Please take care of me." I say, placing my hands together for a formal bow. "I see, so you want to join in with us on our exercises, right?" Kyoya asked, placing his wooden sword over his shoulder and turning to me. "I already have a fighting style, but I'd like to improve it as much as possible." I reply. "I see, why don't we spar then? That way I could understand your position and skillset a little better and where you stand." Kyoya suggest. "Of course." I say as professionally as possible but failing to hide the smirk on my face. Heading over to the weapon rack, I grab a pair of wooden swords and walk to the center of the dojo where Kyoya's waiting.
"So you're a twin sword user as well? I look forward to the match." Kyoya said with a friendly and eager smile. "I'm surprised, I wasn't expecting you to be a dual wielder either Kyo-nii." I remark. "His nickname in the world of swordsmanship and martial arts is 'Godly Twin Short Sword Master - Unbreakable Godly Style.' Nii-san and I are quite famous in that regards, Kuro-chan." Miyuki says to me.
" If I do defeat you, would that make me a God Slayer, Kyo-nii?" I ask provacatively as I prepare myself and mimic one of Archer's stances. "We'll know when we get there, Kuro-chan. I'll have to warn you though." Kyoya prepared his own swordsmanship stance. "I have this nickname for a reason!" Kyoya and I both advanced forward simultaneously with our swords ready. If I activate my abilities in the Archer class mode and fully invoke the powers of the Heroic Spirit EMIYA, it would be quite easy to say that I would win this sparring match. On the other hand, if I were to use my skills and abilities as a human, the match would be far more difficult.
The two pairs of our swords immediately clash in a cross section, only for Kyoya to push me back with his greater amount of physical strength, I take a more evasive set of maneuvers and defend myself while dodging the attacks from Kyoya's wooden swords. I thrust both of my wooden swords forward in an attempt to counterattack but with a double downward slash, both of my swords are brought down and countered immediately.
Throughout most of the fight, any attempts to land an attack are either dodged or blocked. As for me I would have to desperately dodge his attacks and predict where he's swinging since I know that attempting to block them without the strength of a servant would be a terrible idea. Eventually, the match ends when he manages to hit both of my swords and send them flying in different directions. "Match over!" Miyuki announces.
"That was pretty impressive!" Kyoya complimented with sincerity. "Thanks, but I'll only feel better if I manage to land a clean hit on you, Kyo-nii." I reply with a stained smile, causing both Kyoya and Miyuki to laugh. "Most people that are the same age as or even older than Nii-san wouldn't be able to last as long as you did, so it's a sincere compliment." Miyuki says with a grin, patting me on the head. "Hmph...." I grumble in response.
"It should be time for dinner soon. Nanoha-chan and our parents should be almost home." Kyoya comments. "Right, we might as well wait and get ready." I say with a nod as the three of us step out of the dojo. "If you're already that good at swordsmanship, I'm afraid of imagining what your archery abilities are like since you said they were your main talent." Kyoya says with a nervous laugh. "That'll be a surprise to see for later, Kyo-nii." I say with a playful wink.
"Tadaima!" Nanoha announces from the front door. "Okaeri!" Kyoya calls back in response when we enter the house. Nanoha lets out a yawn. "I'm tired from cram school and now I'm hungry." She complains. "Oh, right! Onii-chan, onee-chan, when tou-san and ka-san get home, I have something I want to talk about." Nanoha announces.
"Oh? Alright, guess we'll wait until then." Miyuki replied with a chuckle. I silently watched as Nanoha headed upstairs over to her bedroom with a complicated expression.
