The Oppertunity Of A Lifetime
"Ms. Black! The Minister has requested to see you in his office immediately!" A secretary, who's name you had not learned yet, shouted down the dim corridor as you nodded and rushed down to the Minister's office. You shifted your papers around carefully, your heels clicking loudly as you ran down the crowded hallways.
You inhaled sharply as you raised your hand to knock. Before your knuckles could come in contact with the dark wood, the door flew open to reveal your boss.
"Ah! Ms. Black! Come in! We have much to discuss and such little time!" The Minister exclaimed as he ushered you into his office urgently, shutting the door with a bang. You jumped frightfully as the door slammed shut and quickly moved to sit down across from the Minister.
"Sir, if this is about that boy who accidentally levitated his mother, I-" You began before you were quickly cut off.
"Ms. Black! I can assure you that that is not the reason I have called you here. In fact, the reason that you are here, is much more serious and much more important. The Ministry will be sending you to New York for an undercover mission! You are to assist President Picquery and her exclusive team of Aurors in solving the unsolvable!" Your boss replied as you stared at him in shock. You blinked slowly, taking it all in.
"It's a great honor to be chosen for this assignment, Sir, but don't you think that someone more experienced and qualified should receive the job?" You asked timidly as the Minister shook his head.
"How old are you, Ms. Black?" Your boss asked curiously.
"Twenty-Eight, Sir," You replied as the Minister laughed heartily.
"Ms. Black! You've been apart of the Ministry for almost ten years! You're one of the best Aurors we have, according to my records! And my records are never wrong! Now, Ms. Black, are you willing to take this job or not? This is the opportunity of a lifetime," Your boss replied seriously.
"I...Yes, Sir! It would be an honor to participate in such a momentous case!" You replied as you stood up and shook the Minister's hand, as if to seal your fate. Your boss smiled as he opened a cabinet drawer and pulled out a file, full of papers.
"This is a file full of all the documents you'll need, including your passport and your wand registration, so please don't lose it" The Minister sighed exasperatedly as he handed you the heavy folder.
"Thank you, Sir! I'll take good care of it!" You replied as the Minister nodded and braced himself against his desk.
"Excellent! Excellent! You leave tomorrow!" Your boss exclaimed as he clapped his hands together, excitedly. You stared at him with your mouth agape.
"But, Sir, I haven't any time to pack or get anything ready for this trip! I don't even know my assignment or how long I'll be gone!" You shouted frantically as you shuffled the tons of lose papers on your lap, your stomach churning nervously.
"Right! Just go ahead and take the rest of the day off, to prepare for your trip! As for the assignment itself, you should be gone for about three or four months!"
"I...Um...Yes, Sir! I should probably get going!" You replied nervously, biting you lip as you stood up again and started towards the door timidly. Your boss nodded as he waved his hand to dismiss you.
You ran back towards your own office and dropped all your papers onto your desk. You swiped your purse and cloak off of the hooks, shoving your new documents into your bag as your ran out of the office door and into the front lobby.
Grabbing a handful of floo powder, you jumped into a raging green fire and transported yourself back to your tiny apartment. You sighed as you leaned against your fireplace, trying to control your rapid and uneven breathing.
You hauled yourself upright as you pulled off your cloak and pulled a large trunk out of your hall closet. You walked into your bedroom and pulled out a large array of different outfits, trying to cram them into the case. You sighed tiredly as you shut the trunk and set your purse on top of it carefully, making sure you didn't forget anything. You couldn't forget anything.
You walked into your small kitchen as you pointed your wand towards the cupboard, making yourself a hot cup of tea. You pulled your (H/C) out of it's tight bun and collapsed into a chair at your dinning room table as you sipped your tea slowly.
"America! God (Y/N)! What have you gotten yourself into now?" You whispered to yourself as you shook your head, staring at your now packed trunks.
You kicked off your shoes as you stared around your tiny and bare apartment. The halls seemed so ghostly and empty as you sat alone, drinking your hot tea. Your stormy gray walls seemed bare, as you hadn't hung any pictures or artwork on them, even after living there for almost ten years.
Out of the corner of your eye a small photograph caught your eye, making you jump. You stood up abruptly, rushing to catch your cup, as you knocked the table askew. You set your tea back down and moved slowly towards the moving photograph, as if it were drawing you towards it, like some kind of magnetic force, like some kind of magic.
Your hands shook violently as you lifted the small frame up towards your face. A tear slipped down your cheeks as you looked down at the picture. It was an old photograph. From your very last day at Hogwarts. But it was the only picture you kept.
His chin was resting comfortably on top of your head as you balanced a beautiful purple butterfly on the tip of your nose. He was smiling down at the winged creature, his freckles dancing across his cheeks and the bridge of his nose as you held perfectly still, trying not to ruin the moment.
Newton Scamander. He was the only one who bothered to make a friend out of the girl that no one else bothered to get to know. He was the only one who bothered to get to know the girl that everyone said stay away from. He was your only friend.
You shook your head as you set the photograph back down. That was ten years ago and you hadn't heard from him since. You didn't even know if he was still around. But none of that mattered anymore. You were on your way to America. To New York. And that would take you even farther away from Newt than ever before. But none of that mattered. But still, you couldn't help it, at the last moment, you grabbed the photograph and tucked it into your purse. You just couldn't leave it. Leave him.
