Familiar Faces Lost In A Crowd
Your heels clicked loudly against the pavement as you wrapped your coat tightly around your body, trying to trap the little heat you still had left as you rushed frantically toward the looming skyscrapers. The MACUSA building was one of the tallest in New York, as it housed one of the largest Magical associations in the world, besides your own Ministry of Magic in London.
You had only been in New York for a little over two weeks and you were already missing everything about London. New York was just too different.
Rushing up the steps and into the front lobby, your (E/C) eyes scanned over the Threat-Level Clock, making you shudder. You shouldered your bag carefully as you ducked inside an elevator at the last second, causing the house elf grumble angrily.
"Late again, are we, Ms. Black?" The elf spat out as he pressed several buttons, allowing the elevator to shoot upwards. You held your breath frightfully as you struggled to keep yourself steady.
"Not entirely," You mumbled quietly as you hurried off the elevator and towards President Picquery's office. You inhaled sharply as you opened the door to the office quietly, only to be greeted by the sight of many unsmiling faces.
"How nice of you to join us, Ms. Black! We're just getting started! Please have a seat!" President Picquery stated as she gestured to the last empty seat at the table. You hurried to sit as Seraphina began to speak again. You fumbled with your purse as you fell into your seat with a bit of difficulty.
"As you know there have been many strange things happening throughout our city! And I must say that the No-Maj's are becoming suspicious! Does anyone have anything new to report, that may help us catch the culprit behind all of these attacks?" President Picquery pleaded desperately.
"I witnessed an attack this afternoon! The, well, the whatever it is, tore apart an entire building not to mention, taking most of the street with it!" Percival Graves spoke up as you quickly jotted down several notes. President Picquery nodded as she took in this new information.
"How about you, Ms. Black? Do you have any theories?" Seraphina asked as she braced herself against the large table, making you jump at the sound of your name.
"I'm afraid that I've not witnessed any of these attacks, Madame President, but have we considered that this may be the work of dark wizards?" You asked timidly as President Picquery rubbed her hands together, lost in her own deep thought.
"Yes, we're on the assumption that this is the devious work of the dark forces but we don't know anything specifically," Seraphina replied disappointedly.
"Perhaps Gellert Grindelwald could be behind these attacks on the city?" You added fearfully as Percival Graves smashed his fists down on the table.
"And why would Grindelwald want to destroy New York! That's absolutely preposterous! What would you know about Grindelwald anyway?" Graves spat back at you as you cowered away from him.
"I would appreciate if you didn't raise your voice in my office, Mr. Graves! And I happen to think that Ms. Black could be on to something! I will send word to the Minister of Magic in London as soon as possible, to see what we can dig up on Grindelwald!" President Picquery responded calmly as she nodded her head officially and decisively.
"Madame President, can you really believe such-" Grave began again angrily before he was cut off by the sudden bang of the door, being thrown open.
"I'm so sorry to interrupt, Madame President, but-" A young woman shouted as she rushed into the office, dragging a man behind her. Seraphina looked up and sighed in upmost discomfort.
"Ms. Goldstein! How many times must I tell you that it is no longer your place to be in these meetings!" President Picquery replied impatiently as your eyes flickered to the man the woman had brought with her. There was something about him.
"I know! I know! And I'm so sorry but this man-" Tina began again but Seraphina held up her hand to stop the young woman from saying anymore.
"Ms. Goldstein! I have made it extremely clear that you are no longer an Auror! And now I must ask you to leave my office!" President Picquery shouted as Tina hung her head in defeat. She turned to go just as a lightbulb flickered on inside your head. There was something familiar about his face. But every time you tried to place it, he only got lost in a a crowd of onlookers.
But before you could work up the nerve to say anything, Tina ducked out of the office in embarrassment, taking the man with her. You stood up abruptly, causing everyone to look at you in complete shock as you fumbled to pick up your purse.
"I'm terribly sorry, Madame President, but I must go attend to something!" You shouted as you rushed out the door before anyone could stop you. You turned into the main entry way just as Tina's short dark hair disappeared, heading in the direction of the underground offices.
You fought to catch your breath as you ran down towards the stairs, trying not to lose sight of the woman as you followed her deeper underground. There was something about that man that left you with a shortness of breath. He was familiar. You ran faster, determined not to let the crowds of people swallow them. You had to know. You just had to. You turned down one last dimly lit corridor, just as Tina and the man disappeared into a room labeled; Wand Permits.
You sucked in another uneven breath as you rushed towards the door. What were you doing? Before you could think about it for much longer, you burst through the door and into a quiet office.
Desks lined the spaces around you but only one remained occupied. Two unsmiling faces stared back at you in complete shock. Tina's mouth fell agape as she pointed an accusing finger right at the bridge of your nose, making you jump.
"You! I know you! You're that British Girl who stole my job! You're the one, who they've hired to replace me!" Tina shouted angrily as you stared at her in disbelief but your eyes quickly shifted to the man standing in front of her desk. There was just something familiar about him...
"Newt? Newt Scamander?" You asked quietly as the case fell from the man's hands and he stared at you in disbelief.
