Chapter Seven: Ivy Sapphire: Rescue Plan A
I'm ready. I'm going to save them. Once I fly, that is. It's apparently one of the things I can do because of that magic running in my family, but I just can't do it. I jump off the ten foot rock and all I get is a cut. And a bruise. And pain. But no flight. I jump again, this time moving my arms up and down like an idiot before hitting the ground.
"Ow..." I moan, even though I've gotten used to the pain.
"Try stretching out your wings and flying," Cinnamon advises. I sigh.
"And how do I do that? My wings are only out if I fly it seems, so how do I get them to even appear?"
"It's like walking. You just do it," Juniper says.
"And babies have to learn to walk just as I have to learn to fly. Could you at least give me some pointers?" I ask.
"Uh, maybe try to will your wings out or something?" Clover guesses, unsure of how to put it.
I sigh before climbing back up onto my rock and jumping, this time going out instead of up. I feel something right before I hit the ground but the feeling goes away once I hit it.
"Your wings appeared!" Ginger says excitedly, bouncing over to me as I brush away debris.
I stand over the cave on a drop that's about twenty feet and look down. I'm not scared of heights, but the fact that I have to jump that far is scary. I gulp, before I jump. I feel that same feeling from earlier, a nice feeling that makes me feel, alive. I spread out my wings as easily as moving my arms or legs and my wings allow me to glide down to the ground, completely unharmed. Cinnamon beams at me and my accomplishment becomes less exciting as I realize I only glided. My next step is to fly. I jump off the twenty foot drop and jump off, this time knowing I can jump safely. I jump outwards again and begin flapping my wings up and down like a bird. I would tell you how, but it's like your arms. You just move them. Slowly I rise into the sky and shout with joy, "I did it!"
Cinnamon smiles and her three puppies jump around like crazy, excited that I've finally flown. I hit the ground and my wings disappear again, while Ginger gives me an affectionate snuggle. I begin to flip through the pages of the book, looking for stuff on flight in case it can give me some pointers. I don't find any pointers but I do find something.
In order for one's wings to remain open while they are on the ground he or she must think of their wings, every detail, until he or she feels the "wing feeling," an indescribable feeling that one feels whilst wings are out. In order to stop the wings from showing one must fold his or her wings in and the wings shall disappear. In order to change the color of one's wings he or she must think of the desired pattern and it shall appear on his or her wings. However, if oneself is falling the wings will appear automatically.
I look it over and decide to test it. I begin to imagine my angel-like, white wings and I feel the so-called "wing feeling." It's hard to explain, the wing feeling, you have to feel it to understand it, like the book said. I think it might be similar to the feeling the Darlings got when Peter Pan showered them with pixie dust, but I don't know. Next, I fold in my wings and the wing feeling goes away. I don't feel like changing my wing color, figuring Leila might notice, so I keep my wings white. But more importantly, I'm ready.
"Any of you coming with me?" I ask the dogs. Ginger steps forward while all the other dogs take a step back.
"Cinnamon? Juniper? Clover? None of you? Just Ginger?" I ask, making sure the other three dogs don't want to go.
"I'm getting older, and these two are too used to this lifestyle. If Ginger wants to she can, but we're not going," Cinnamon says, probably wishing she had the bravery to go.
"Okay, you can move back into the palace once we, you know, beat the Savvys," I tell Cinnamon and she smiles before I wave goodbye.
Ginger and I walk out of the cave, and if this was a movie there would be some epic music playing. Until I trip.
"Fuck."
Ginger helps me up and we start our mission. I imagine my giant angel wings and they appear, as white and beautiful as ever. I nod to Ginger, who takes out her wings, and we jump off the cave and fly towards the city.
"We're headed to that cloud," I tell Ginger, pointing at the giant gray cloud. She nods and I start soaring upward, towards said cloud. I look down at the city as we get closer and see Daisy with an older girl, who I'm assuming is Kendall. Cassandra and Emira have surrounded them and they have no way out. Daisy's crying while Kendall attempts to defend them.
"Book of Magicae, come to me," I say. I watch the book fly over and I catch it. Opening it, I find the invisibility spell and say it,
"Invisible are we," I say, which makes me and anyone within ten feet of me become invisible (except that invisible people or animals can see other invisible people or animals). I nod to Ginger, and we fly down to the ground and fold up our wings. I sneak up behind Cassandra and kick her in the chin. She reaches her hand up to the bloody spot and the twins look around for somebody. Seeing no one, they turn back to the sisters. Ginger jumps up and scratches Emira's nose, blood everywhere on her face. It's disgusting and Emira thinks so too because she shrieks.
"Shut up. It's just some blood. We'll clear it up at the palace," Cassandra snaps.
Emira makes a whining noise and I'm about to punch Cassandra in her...private area, when she falls over. I look at Daisy and see that her sandal has some of Cassandra's blood on it.
"Wow!" Daisy says, excited that she had done something. She then turns to her foot and makes an ick face.
Kendall seems to know what the heck happened, so I ask her, "Do you know how Daisy did that?" she doesn't answer and instead seems confused. I'm invisible. Duh. "Visible are we," and with that Ginger and I become visible again.
"Do you know how Daisy did that?" I repeat.
"Uh. Who are you?" Kendall asks.
"I am Ivy Sapphire," I tell her and she bows.
"It's an honor, your majesty, but shouldn't you be trying to reclaim the kingdom?" Kendall asks.
"I was heading to the palace but I saw this so I came and helped," I reply. "Anyway, what did Daisy even do?"
"She kicked Cassandra. Really quickly. Also, was it you who hit Emira?"
"Yeah."
"So that's what that was. I wasn't quite sure what it was. Anyway, my family, the Sparks' job is to deliver all the messages on the planet. To do that we have the power to do things extremely fast, and the power to fly. That's why Daisy could do that, it's part of the family's job," she explains.
I nod, "What about those two? They're still on the ground and can wake up at any moment!" I say, nodding towards the twins.
"We'll deal with them," Kendall says while hugging Daisy.
"They can teleport," I remind her.
"We'll try and keep them down until we hear you've got their mother beaten."
"You'll be risking your life though. I don't want you to risk your life just for me."
"I'm doing it for my home. If I do lose my life I'll be remembered as a hero, as I've always wanted to," Kendall replies bravely.
"Okay. I'm headed to go beat Leila!" I say confidently before bringing my wings out again and flying into the sky with Ginger behind me.
A minute or so later I've landed on the cloud. I pull Ginger closer to me before saying, "Invisible are we."
Both of us go invisible and I whisper to Ginger, "She can still hear us, so be quiet."
Ginger nods and we open the door and fly through it, worried that we might need our wings, so we keep them out. We're in the throne room and luckily Leila's out.
"Visible are we," I say, the spell no longer a necessity.
"Ivy!" Holly, Nari, Snapdragon and a bunch of other people call.
I look up and am surprised at one of the people up there, "Jade?"
"Yeah. It's me. Leila did it," she says and I don't bother to question it.
Those four girls are hanging over a lava pit with three other girls, one of whom is holding on for her life, not even tied. I grab her first, before she falls, and she thanks me as I set her on the ground. I look to the other side and notice there's another lava pit which has a bunch of adults hanging over it.
"Mom? Dad?" I ask, confused.
"This weird lady came and took us here. We started to write a note but..." my mother's voice trails off. My eyes are full of tears but it's interrupted by Nari.
"I hate to break this up but Leila can come home any second. We need you to untie us and run!"
I nod and begin untying people and bringing them safely down to the ground. I start with the adults and once they're all on the ground I begin to save my friends. I look at Ginger and she begins helping too, so we're untying everyone twice as fast.
"Leila's coming!" says the girl with brown skin and black curly hair.
Everyone stops and listens.
"Lily's right!" Snapdragon exclaims after a few seconds, and I make everyone stand close to me.
"Invisible are we," I whisper and everyone goes invisible. Leila walks in and everyone stands against a wall.
"I heard something," Leila says to herself.
"Invisible am I," she says the invisibility spell that makes only you invisible. She looks over at us.
"So we meet, princess," she sneers, using something in a chest to sweep everyone else into a net she conjures. The net shuts and everyone begins to struggle at it.
"It seems only yesterday that I sent you off and made this castle my own. Now look at you, all grown up and here to challenge me," Leila says in a fake-sweet voice. I'm beginning to dislike her more and more by the second and I fly up to the ceiling, scared.
"You really think that's going to work," Leila says and she uses the stuff in the chest to conjure herself some wings and fly up to the ceiling. Leila flies over to me and pins me against the wall. Before I can teleport she conjures a little box.
"Can't teleport in here!" she laughs maniacally and pins me to the wall.
"How sweet. Perhaps I'll take this frame and incase you in it. That should look pretty on my wall," she says and she's about to do something with the frame behind her when a bolt of lightning zaps her. In the palace.
"D-Did I just do that?" I ask, confused. I leave the box, which can be exited just not teleported out of and look at Leila dumbfoundedly as she lies on the ground, unconscious.
"Nope!" says Nari. "It was me!"
"But how?"
"My family controls the weather. I control the weather. I can even make the weather change inside," she says, as if it came naturally. Everyone else seems to get excited at the topic of family jobs and they eagerly explain their family's job.
"My family trains animals, especially mythical creatures," Snapdragons says. "I didn't get this burn from cooking! I got it from a dragon," she points to a burn on her arm.
"My family talks to animals and heals them. Basically, we're the vets," Lily says.
"My family makes everyone's clothing and runs all the clothing stores. Also we make wigs," one of the other girls says. "Oh. I'm Lana," she says, smiling with her wavy black hair.
"My family takes the job of being doctors and such. Which includes being a surgeon, which is disgusting. Looking at people's hearts and guts and stuff really makes you immune to any sort of blood and gore," a girl with long light blonde hair says. "Also, I'm Ally."
"My family delivers all the messages. Since we're scattered across the planet we're able to deliver every message," Holly says.
"I saw your sisters," I tell her.
"Are they okay?" Holly asks, worriedly.
"They're fine. Don't worry about them," I lie, biting my lip.
"You sure?"
"Yes. I'm sure," I lie again. I smile at everyone and we all turn to stare at Leila.
"What're we going to do with...her?" Lily asks.
"We'll lock her up and take away that chest," I say. "I want to see what's inside it." We grab the chest from beside Leila and I open it slowly.
"It's-It's dust! Like the dust in my hair! It's not Leila's though, it would've been in her hair. Maybe it's my mother's!" I exclaim.
"About your mother," Ally says, "we still don't know where she is and Leila's clearly conscious now." Everyone turns to Leila who is actually conscious. I grab a small amount of the dust in my hair, which conveniently regrows with my hair, and sprinkle it onto Leila who flies up.
"Wh-Where am I?" she asks before becoming completely conscious. "You!" she exclaims seconds later, pointing and glaring at me. I levitate her higher and she doesn't move, afraid of falling.
"Now, Leila. Let's just...dispose of you," I say, smirking. Leila looks a bit scared but she hides it well with a scowl rivaling that of an animated villain. I find the staircase down to the dungeons, mostly with help from Snapdragon and Holly, and I find myself in a room full of flesh and blood.
"Leila's doing," the kids say while the adults just stare in horror.
"Can we be going?" Jade's mother asks, probably worried her sanity will be destroyed soon.
"Sure, we'll take it from here. Just walk back to the entrance hall and use this ladder," I say, creating a huge ladder.
The adults leave us and, we begin to walk down the hall, each room more bloody and gory than the next. We eventually get down to the end of the hall where Lana eagerly points at a door.
"She goes in here. End of story," she exclaims.
"Why here?" I ask.
"That's where she kept all of us," Ally explains. I nod and try to search Leila's pockets, which is impossible while she's conscious.
I begin to give out instructions, "Nari and Lily, take her right arm. Snapdragon and Holly, take her left arm. Lana and Ally, take her feet, both of them. Jade, take her head, and I'll get to her pockets," everyone goes to grab their part of Leila and I begin to search her pockets, while she remains helpless. The first thing I find is a key ring so I stop searching the pockets and look for the bloodiest key, seeing as the keyhole is really bloody. I quickly find a key stained with blood, especially at the tip, and put it in the keyhole. Nervously turning the key, I watch as the door opens. I levitate Leila in and begin to use some ropes on the floor to tie her up. I close the door and begin to leave the dungeon.
"Those were our ropes before we escaped and then got captured again," Holly says, eyeing Lily. I stop moving, and turn around crossing my arms and looking at Lily.
"What happened?"
"I might've dropped something important," Lily mutters
"How important?"
"Our escape ladder!" Lana exclaims, a little outraged.
"It was in the water, Lana! Give me a break!" Lily yells.
"You still dropped it!"
"How was I supposed to know there was water?"
"Nobody said you had to! I just said you shouldn't have dropped it!" While Lily and Lana continue arguing and some of us roll our eyes I hear something. A whisper.
"Mother hasn't called us. Something happened," somebody whispers.
"Stop arguing! I hear someone!" I hiss at everyone.
"How do you expect me to see about a thousand feet down while on a cloud and under pressure!?"
"Nobody does! We just expected you to be more careful!" Snapdragon yells, having joined the argument on Lana's side.
"I was careful!"
"It's not working," Holly says worriedly.
"You heard it, right?" I ask.
"Yeah, I did," she replies. "It doesn't sound good but they won't shut up!"
"You would've down the same thing if you had been the one with the ladder," Jade says, clearly having joined Lily's side.
"Wanna bet?" Lana yells.
"Yes. I do," Lily says calmly.
"SHUT UP!" I yell.
"I would've actually used the ladder correctly!" Snapdragon yells.
"Would not!" Lily yells.
"Would too!" Lana yells.
"Would not!" Jade says, not wanting to yell, but reaching her limit by this point.
"They're not listening," Holly says.
"She tried! Just cut the girl a break!" Nari says, now having joined the argument on Lily's side.
"She failed! That's the point! The fact she tried doesn't matter unless something good came out of it! Which it didn't!" Ally yells.
"It's just you and I," I say to Holly, as we watch the two groups argue.
"They're vulnerable. I can hear it," the voice says.
"It's the twins!" I whisper to Holly. She listens again before nodding. I hope Holly's sisters are okay. Especially Daisy, I bet Kendall would be fine.
"I think the adults got out quickly enough. We would've heard something. We're-We're gonna be too late no matter how quickly we wrap this up,"
"What do you think we should do?" I ask.
"Get them to shut up,"
"How!"
"I don't know! Use some of your royal blood or something. There's something in there,"
"I haven't used it before! You're a messenger. You have to have some sort of 'shut up and listen',"
"I'll try," Holly says, taking a deep breath. "SHUT THE FUCK UP!"
Everyone stops to look at her.
"Listen," I say calmly. Everyone else listens and their faces turn to terror.
"The twins!" Lily exclaims.
"That's what they were trying to tell you!" Lana says, glaring at Lily.
"What we were trying to tell all of you, Lana. Not just Lily. You too," Holly says, rolling her eyes. Lana sulks but remembers the urgency of the situation and stops.
"So what are we going to do?" she asks. I hug Ginger, who everyone kind of forgot about with all the excitement.
"You're going to hate me for this..." I start.
"What is it?" Ally asks.
"You'll...have to be bait," I say.
"WE'LL HAVE TO BE WHAT!" Lily yells, before covering her mouth with her hand.
"Oops."
"They're in the dungeon," one of the twins says.
"I think that's Cassandra. Not that it matters, she's always with her sister," Holly says.
"Okay. Everyone, follow me," I say, starting to actually go somewhere.
"I'm watching, you idiots," Leila says from behind me.
"Okay," I shrug. I take some of the rope still on the ground and tie it around her mouth.
"I fucking hate you," she says before the rope comes on.
"I know. I fucking hate you too," I say sweetly.
Leila sighs under her gag and I lead my group onward. We begin walking towards the door, where the cells get less and less disgusting.
"Let's get them now."
"Change of plans. We're going out the window," I say, pointing everyone into one of the cleanest cells.
"It's disgusting!" Lana complains.
"You'd rather be hanging over lava?" I ask sarcastically. Lana doesn't comment as I fly up to the window.
"Let's get outta here and reclaim our kingdom!" I say enthusiastically, but quietly, as I get ready to throw people out the window.
"Not happening," someone says.
"Cassandra!" Lily yells, running over to the door of the cell to leave and kick butt. Cassandra simply locks and closes the door using her stolen dust.
"We only got Leila's!" I whisper.
"Can't you do something?" Jade whispers.
"I'll try," I promise and attempt to unlock the door. Cassandra holds something out.
"Glad this old thing still works," she laughs and I feel something leave my hair. I reach up and feel the sparkling dust leave my hair.
"You monster!" I yell.
"Oh, spare me from your petty insults," she says and she summons some ropes which tie us all to the pole in the middle of the room.
Well, I lied.
Everyone else is tied in the middle of the room, screaming for mercy. Cassandra levitates me out, and Ginger, while leaving Emira to get Leila out. Cassandra steals Leila's box of dust from me and levitates it to her sister, explaining what it is. She levitates us to the throne room, where she takes a rope. She ties one end to the ceiling and the other end around my body so I can't move anything but my head. I feel the blood rush to my head as I hang there, upside down and helpless. I watch as Ginger floats through as well, the sparkling dust gone from her fur. Cassandra levitates her over the other lava pit, since I'm over the other. She gets another rope and tied one end to the ceiling and another around Ginger's body.
"You remind me of a lot of people I know," Leila says to me, having been freed from the dungeon and reunited with her stolen dust, "but the one that comes to mind first is your mother. Evie Sapphire."
"Where is she?"
"In front of you, my sweet little niece."
"YOUR WHAT?"
"My niece."
"I'm not your niece."
"You don't know your ancestry. I do. I'm your aunt."
"She's right you know," someone says sadly. I look in front of me and watch as a woman moves in a painting.
"Mom?"
