Chapter 8
Tears streamed down Lila's smooth cheeks as she read the message again.
Miss Lila.
We regret to inform you your brother didn't pass the trials. He failed a spell and that mistake cost him his life. As you know, no one knows how to bring magical beings back to life. I am sorry for your loss.
-Head of the wizard council
Tears didn't stop. Liam had been the only one truly there for her, the only one who knew she was a fairy and the one who offered her encouragement. Now, she didn't have that. She didn't have anyone. Realization of that brought fresh tears to her face. She didn't have anyone, and she was only thirteen. She was too young to live alone. What would that mean for her? Probably no more fairy studies.
Lila stood up, cheeks still wet from the tears that wouldn't stop flowing. She grabbed a book and said aloud the spell she needed.
Come to me
The one I need
Help me
Come to me
In an instant, Faith appeared in Lila's basement. She looked around, probably wondering where she was. When she spotted Lila, her eyes widened and she ran to hug her. "Lila what's wrong?" She asked. Lila wordlessly handed Faith the note. Faith's eyes widened again and she gave the young girl another hug. "This has to be a joke." Lila said. Faith smiled weakly. "I wish it was." She said. Lila looked around the basement. "I'm the only one who made it. The only one who got through my test." Lila said. Faith hugged her. "Now you must be careful to keep your powers." She said.
Lila took a deep breath. "I will. I promise. I have to be." She said. Faith smiled kindly. "I'm here for you sweetie." She said. Lila gave Faith another big hug. "Thanks. I think I'll... Well, I guess it's my job to make up a story on how he died." Lila said, sighing. Faith smiled again, sadly this time. "Yes it is." When a wizard or any other mythical being got killed during testing, they obviously couldn't tell everyone that, no one could know the person was a mythical being. "You also need to find a lawyer, you need a guardian. Didn't worry though, I'm sure Mom and Dad would take you in." Lila smiled sadly. "That would be nice". She said. "Come to our house after you figure out your story." Faith said, then teleported herself back to her house.
Lila thought for a moment. "I may as well just say he died in a car accident, because he hit a tree." She said, then, after putting a protection spell on Faith, she waved her hands and said a spell she wished she never knew.
Make everyone believe
This story I have conceived,
Make them never know
He died another way.
Now, everyone except Faith would think he died in a car accident.
Lila looked around her house, and walked upstairs. She looked through the whole home, which was quite large. She walked through Liam's room, Lacy's room, her parents room, even the guest room, before she came to hers. Lila sat down on her bed and fingered the soft comforter on top of it. She though about the empty house she was sitting in, and the four members that were missing from it. "I'm the only one still here. Funny, I think I'm the only one who wishes that I wasn't." Lila said softly.
After reflecting for a bit, Lila stood up and walked outside her house. She locked the door behind herself and slipped the key into her pocket.
After walking to the Martian's house, Lila slowly walked up the front walk. She slowly knocked on the door. Mrs. Martian answered it. "Lila! Dear, how are you?" She asked. Lila crumpled to the ground. "My brother was in a car accident." She said, sobbing. "He didn't survive."
