Chapter 9
As soon as you felt the slightest amount of sunlight hit your face you groggily open your eyes. You turn to your side but just end up getting a face full of fur.
'Right, Rose fell asleep next to me.' You think and sit up.
You rub your eyes with the sleeve of your shirt and open your eyes again. You look down at your other side to see that Eridan was still asleep in his bed roll. You giggle slightly when you hear a loud snore come from his open mouth. You decide to get some fresh air and let Eridan sleep some more.
'Good morning (y/n).' you hear Rose.
You look behind you to see the white cat stretching.
"Good morning Rose," You whisper to the familiar, "do you want me to brush your fur?"
'That would be appreciated.' She replies.
You nod and stand up out of your bedroll. You slip your boots on before searching through your bag for the brush. You finally pull out one; it was a dark green with golden edges. It was your brush, not Rose's.
'I might as well brush my hair.' You think and quickly brush through your messy hair.
Once your hair is satisfactory, you put it back and go back to fishing through the bag for Rose's brush.
"Aha" you mumble as you pull out her brush.
You stand up and walk out of the tent. You sit down on a grassy patch of the ground. Rose then sits in your lap, ready to be brushed. You begin to brush Rose's fur, which was pretty dirty and tangled. You begin to hum a song to which you forgot the lyrics. You smile when you hear Rose purring from the affectionate brushing.
You hear the entrance to the tent rustle. You turn your head to see Eridan poke his head out of the tent, his eyes were squinting, not really liking the sunlight. You chuckle, making Eridan look at you.
"Good morning, bed head." You laugh.
Eridan grumbles as he steps out of the tent, he brushes his hand through his hair in an attempt to tame his crazy locks, but to no avail. He wanders over to you and looks down at your sitting figure.
"Alright Rose." You say and she hops off.
'Thank you.'
She then proceeds to walk over and sit by the fire pit. The fire was already out so you had no idea why.
"Could you help me up?" you ask, holding your hands out, the brush still clutched in one.
Eridan sighs, but grabs your hand and wrist and tugs you up. You hiss slightly in pain but smile anyway.
"Thank you." You grin.
"So, are going to have breakfast?" Eridan asks.
"We'll pack everything up and then we can eat while we walk." You tell him and head over to the tent.
"Alright, done." You sigh in relief as you put the last of the stuff away.
Before you close your bag you pull out some wrapped bar like things. You walk over to Eridan, who had already swung his bag on. You hand him one of the bars.
"Alright, let's go." You say.
As you bend down to grab your bag Rose jumps back to her usual place around your neck. You put your bag on and you begin to walk towards your next stop, the Blood Kingdom. You begin to eat your bar, giving some to Rose and then yourself and so on.
You glance over at Eridan to see that he had already finished his.
"Wow, you must have been hungry." You chuckle as Eridan's cheeks flush.
"Shut up." He replies stiffly.
"Oh come on, I'm just playing." You smile.
Eridan glances over at you before looking forward again as he tries to avoid smiling.
"Wowee," you sigh, "I forgot how trekking through forest was much more work than taking paths."
"Well, you should have expected it to be tough." Eridan replies.
"How are you not tired?" you ask, diverting your eyes from in front of you to the man beside you.
Eridan just shrugs and you sigh, looking forward once again. You look around at the trees around you. The forest had become thinner; the trees were slightly smaller and parted further.
"I think we're either coming up to a clearing or a village." You tell Eridan.
"How do you know?" Eridan asks.
"The trees are getting sparser." You reply, shrugging.
Eridan looked around at his surroundings, noticing that the trees had in fact, become spread apart than before.
You both go back to being silent, travelling far distances really did take a lot of energy. So instead of wasting energy on talking, you both thought that it would be easier to just stay quiet.
Eventually the trees disappear completely and you manage to stumble across a village. You and Eridan look at each other. You continue to walk into the village, staying close to one another. As you walk villagers you notice that some of them sneer and some just look away.
'Something's wrong.' You think and look over at Eridan, who glanced back at you.
The both of you share worried looks before looking forward again. As you're walking you notice that Eridan had stopped walking. You also stop and look at him. He had a horrified look on his face as he gazed off in another direction. You follow his line of sight. You jaw drops in horror at what you end up seeing.
Only a few feet away were a gallows, and hanging from the two ropes were a man and a woman. They both had random magic items still on them. And attached to the wooden frame of the gallows was a sign.
'All users of magic will be hung.'
