Chapter 31

"(Y/n), can you hand me the sauce?"

You sit down your food and pass of the small jar to Karkat, who thanks you and practically dumps all of it onto his food. You look at Karkat with a blank stare.

"What?"

"We might've wanted some of that." Vriska scoffs, rolling her eyes.

"Well too bad." Karkat growls, taking a bite of his lunch.

"Ugh, you child." Eridan sighs.

You snicker as you continue eating. Feferi giggles at the scene before her, seeing as this was quite new to her. As you continue to eat, everyone makes jabs at each other. You were easily the first to finish; you were hungry as hell so it didn't take long for you to chow down. You pull out your magic cloth and begin to clean off your bowl and fork.

Smack!

You wince as you feel the fork land in your lap. You let out a sigh as you look up, glaring at the now silent group. You look around to see that Karkat no longer had his fork. You pick up the fork, twirling it in your hand.

"Shit, sorry," Karkat tell you, "Sol-"

He's cut off when you throw the fork back at him, hitting him square in the forehead. The others burst out in laughter as Karkat falls backwards, clutching his forehead.

"What the fuck? How are you such a mean throw?!" Karkat shouts as he scrambles back up.

"You're forgiven." You smile, wiping the food from your face and pants.

Karkat grumbles under his breath as he picks his fork back up.

You grin to yourself in satisfaction as you lean your arm against your knee, resting your chin in your palm.

~~~
"So, what if you used one fire one and an ice one at the same time?" Karkat asks another dumb question, "Would they cancel each other out?"
"Well, I assume that they would act as they would by themselves," you shrug, "they are magic after all."
"What if they both broke in half and you used two halves of different staffs to make on again?"
"Well, since it's the crystal that gives it power, whichever one was attached to it," you explain, "if you use two crystals it could dual wield two different elements."
"Well, why don't you do that?"
"Because I like fire."
"Oh."
You giggle at Karkat's reaction. You look down at your staff sighing.
"Karkat," you speak up, getting his attention, "do you want to have a go?"
"Really?!"
"Sure, since we're in a pretty open area."
You hand the staff to him, looking around for a target. You notice a large rock.
"Alright Karkat," you speak in a calm voice, "just point you end of the staff to the rock over there."
He does so, holding it still.
"Now all you have to say is 'Ignis'."
"Ignis."
A small ball of fire shoots from the end of the staff, hitting the rock and disbursing.
"Nice!"
You look back at Karkat, who was smiling at his achievement.
"Did you really just let him do that?"
You look over to see Eridan standing not too far away.
"Yep," you nod, "I trusted that he wouldn't do anything dumb."
Eridan just huffs and continues to walk. You look back at Karkat, who seemed just as confused as you. You just smile and shrug, continuing on.
"Here."
Karkat hands your staff back, looking at the ground.
"Hey, you did great." You grin, patting his back.
You both fall into a comfortable silence, the only one you could hear talking was Rose, any you were pretty sure she was hunting a bird. You hum, sliding your staff to fit between your back and bag, allowing you to have free hands.
'All of this will be worth it.'
