Chapter 29
You slide your bag on and pick up your staff. You look over at the now dead campfire and see that the others were waiting for you. You walk over to them and grin, feeling Rose jump onto your shoulder.
"Alright then, let's head off."
The same thing that has been happening ever since your journey started continues. All of you continue to move on, trudging through the forest. Occasionally you would begin a conversation with one of the others, but usually it wouldn't last long and you'd be quiet once more.
The beautiful silence that almost bored to death was interrupted by sobbing, which seemed to come from nearby.
"Guys, can you hear that?"
Everyone stops, listening out for whatever you told them to. They perk up when they too hear the sobbing.
"I think it's coming from this direction." Vriska points.
"Can't we just keep going?' Sollux asks.
You sigh and hit Sollux's arm. You head towards the direction Vriska pointed out. It was indeed the right direction as the sobbing became louder. Your eyes widen when you notice that you had stopped walking on the soft grass and you were now on a dry lake bed. You look around to see that there had been a large lake here. But now it was completely derived of any water.
You notice a figure sitting in the middle of the dried out lake. You warily walk towards them, your staff still tightly gripped in your hands. Rose nudges your cheek, still comfortably sitting on your shoulder. As you get closer you notice a pair of wings springing from her back.
"Um, excuse me." You try to talk to them in a soft voice.
They visibly flinch and lift their head from their knees looking over at you. Her watery eyes blink a few times, either to get rid of her tears, or she was confused by the sight of you.
"Who are you?" she hiccups.
"I'm (y/n)," you speak up, "my group and I were walking close by and heard you. Are you alright?"
She shakes her head, her bottom lip quivering, "my lake, it's gone."
Your brain clicks, so this was her lake. You feel stupid, as you probably should have noticed this earlier.
"I'm so sorry," you try to sympathise, "that must be devastating."
"I don't know what to do." She wails, her hands bunch up into fists as she tries to wipe away all of her tears.
You can hear your travel mates walking up behind you. You decide to take a risk and sit your staff and bag down on the ground. You sit beside her, resting a hand on her shoulder. She leans against you, crying into your shoulder.
"I don't know what to do," She sobs, "I've lost everything."
"I know," you soothe her; "I know what it's like to lose everything."
She looks over at you, probably wanting an explanation.
"I lost my entire village, and my childhood," you feel so vulnerable to say this to a stranger, "I was a forced slave for the Grand High Blood."
You look over at her to see that she had stopped crying. She was obviously still destressed, but she stopped tearing up.
"How about you come with us?" you offer.
She lifts her head up from your shoulder and looks back at your group. They were all waiting for you patiently, although Karkat looked a little disgruntled.
She looks as though she was going to say no, but she smiles slightly.
"Alright," she nods, "I don't have anything here anymore."
You get to your feet and hold a hand out for her. She takes it and you help her to her feet. You both dust yourself off and you grin at the group.
"Well, looks like we have a new member." You smile.
"Hi, nice to meet you all!"
She was clearly still in pain, but she was trying her best to not look effected.
The group say their various assorted greetings. You walk over and sling your bag back on and grabbing your staff. You pull your cloth from your back pocket and hand it to the girl.
"Here, you should probably clean your face."
"Oh, thank you."
She thanks you and quickly wipes her face off and hands you the cloth back. You were happy that this cloth didn't get dirty as you shove it back into your pocket.
Just as you all began to walk away from the dead lake, Sollux turns to face you both.
"Wait, we didn't catch your name."
"Oh, my apologies," she giggles, "my name's..."
