Chapter 28
You take a piece of meat from your bowl and toss it down for Rose, who happily eats it up. The voices of Karkat and Sollux bickering faded behind you as you begin to converse with Rose.
"You do know that you can catch your own food, right?"
'Of course,' she meows, 'but why do that when you can feed me.'
You roll your eyes and go back to your food. You notice that Karkat and Sollux had stopped their arguing and you look up. They had indeed stopped and were looking at you, confused.
"What?" you ask, tilting your head.
"Were you just talking to your cat?" Karkat asks.
You were confused for a moment, then realised that they had probably never had familiars before.
"Oh, right, well she's my familiar, so I can talk to her and vice versa." You shrug.
They didn't seem quite convinced, but just shrug it off.
"Oh yeah, Eridan," you begin, look over at him, "why don't you have a familiar?"
"Hmm, well, I never really wanted the company." He replies.
You found that quite odd, but you don't push the conversation. You quickly finish up your food and use your cloth to clean it up. You would stay up and talk with the others, but decide that sleep would probably be a good idea.
"Well, I'm gonna get some rest." You sigh as you get to your feet.
"Didn't you take a nap earlier?" Vriska asks, a grin on her face.
"Yep, but we'll be heading off early as usual, so I'd like to get some extra sleep," you smile, "I'd rather not be sluggish tomorrow."
With that you head straight into your tent. You snuggle up into your blankets and close your eyes.
~~~
Your eyes slowly blink open, and the first thing you realise is that it was still dark out. You knew that you wouldn't get anymore sleep, so you decide to go for a walk. You sit up and notice that Eridan wasn't in the tent. For a moment you think that he had fallen asleep in the other tent, but then realise that they'd probably bicker all night. You slip on your shoes and walk out, looking around as you do so. The others seemed to have gone to bed, and you could just catch Vriska's hair dangling down from a tree. You roll your eyes and head over to the lake you had decided to camp near.
'Oh, so that's when Eridan went.' You think as you head towards him.
"Hey."
Eridan jumps slightly at the sound of your voice, but smiles when you stand beside him.
"What're you doing awake?" he asks you, looking back over towards the lake.
"Hmm, well, guess I've slept too much already." You laugh.
"Well, that's what you get for napping."
"Hey, you could have woken me up!" you snap playfully, nudging his shoulder with yours, "anyway, why're you awake?"
"Couldn't sleep." He shrugs.
"Well, guess we're in the same boat." You sigh.
You look over at the lake, which was glowing, the full moon reflecting off of the surface.
"I'd love to live near a lake," you admit, "not in any village where things are always busy, and I could have a giant garden where I can plant as much as I want for potions."
"That sounds lovely." Eridan hums, looking over at you.
"Well, what about you?"
"What do you mean?" Eridan asks.
"What do you want to do after this quest?"
"Well, I guess I'll return home," He shrugs, "I never really had much more I wanted to do with my life."
"Well, you can always come with me." you look back over at the lake to avoid eye contact.
'Dammit you idiot, why would you say that!'
"Really?" you glance over at Eridan to see that he too was looking at the lake.
"Of course," you smile, "unless you don't want the company."
"I'm always happy for your company."
