Chapter 20
You groan as you take a step back, there was now muck covering the bottom of your boots. Now you wished that the Blood Kingdom continued for a few more days. You regret complaining, since now you'd have to trudge through this disgusting sludge.
"Great, now I have to listen to you complain about this too." Karkat groans.
"Oh shut it." You frown, poking your tongue out at him.
You look down at your boots, which reached to just below your knees. You had had these boots for almost a year, so you could just get a new pair later.
"Alright, the Doom Kingdom is bigger than the Blood Kingdom, so we'll have to trudge through here for longer." You explain to the other two.
"My boots will never recover after this." Eridan sighs sadly as he begins walking.
You follow after him, the disgusting squelching sound from under your boots made you irritated. Now you'd have to hear the same sound for the next week.
'You better not let me drop.' Rose shudders.
"Just don't annoy me and I won't." you reply with a smirk.
The only good thing that came from this was that there were now trees to block out the harsh sun. As you walked you made sure not to step into an area that was too deep. You really didn't want your pants to get dirty too. You knew that there were probably areas of grass. Hopefully you could find one of those areas to sleep in so that you wouldn't have to sleep in trees or something.
You could tell the other two were as annoyed as you about the disgusting swamp muck that you were now forced to march through. But there wasn't really anything that any of you could do about it. Earlier you were walking beside Eridan, but now you were behind them. You shift uncomfortably as your rod presses against your back. You grip the wood just below the crystal and pull it from its place. You sigh in relief when you feel more comfortable already. You decide that carrying it would be much more comfortable to just carry it and leave it in your hands.
'Are you really just going to carry that?' Rose asks.
"Yep, because I'm pretty sure that I have splinters in my back," you nods, "even though I have a cloak and shirt in between."
"Who are you talking to?" Karkat asks, turning to look at you.
"Rose, obviously." You reply, blinking in confusion.
"Who the hell is-" Karkat stops himself when you point to the unamused looking cat on your shoulder.
"And yes, I know what she's saying." You answer the question you knew he was going to ask.
In return he just shrugs his shoulders and looks forward once again. The group falls quiet once again. You swat flies from your face as you keep your eyes flicking between in front of you and down at your feet.
"Oh thank heavens." You hear Eridan sigh in what seemed to be relief.
You look up to see that there was now actual solid ground, although it did seem to still be drenched in mucky swamp water. You stomp out of the muck and onto the elevated ground; you look at your disgusting boots and sighed. You were kind in disappointed because you had spent a fair amount of money on the boots and now you would have to get new ones. Or just clean them, but you weren't sure if you'd be able to save them after this journey.
"Well thank fuck for that," Karat sighs, "now I don't have to feel like I'm trying to wash my feet with my shoes still on."
You laugh as you lean against a tree and sit your staff down. You slip off one of your boots and tip out the slushy water out. You slip the boot back on and do the same as the other.
"Alright, I guess we should probably find somewhere to stay." You suggest.
The two boys hum in agreement and you all continue on your way. As you leave you make sure not to forget your staff. You hum as you walk beside Eridan once again, no longer being held down by the muck.
"How about we just stay here?" you suggest, looking down at the ground, which was more solid and less wet than before.
"It'll do." Karkat shrugs.
You look around at the trees that surrounded you. You wished you could use your magic to make a tree house, but unfortunately that wasn't how your magic worked and you definitely had to sleep on the ground.
"Alright, let's set up these stupid tents."
You sigh in relief when you look at your made up tent, you were so happy it was so easy to set this thing up, otherwise you'd be there until the moon rose.
"Do you think we could make a fire the cook some of this meat?" you ask.
"Well, we can try and find some dry dead branches lying around." Eridan suggests.
"Sounds like a plan." You nod.
"Just make sure not to get lost."
And with that the three of you go your separate ways to look for fire wood.
