Chapter 18
Alright guys, as you can see, this is a very slow moving book, but the pace should pick up eventually. I had planned out this story, but I never knew how many chapters it would be. This is the first time I've ever had a book this long, and I'm so excited to see how far it will go!
You had paid for the supplies and already headed out from the uneventful village. You were quite surprised that nothing had happened, since every other village you had visited something had happened. The grass you were walking in was much shorter that it had been before; it now only reached your knees, so you were now itching free.
"We're moving faster than I thought we would." Karkat confesses.
"That's good," you sigh, "if I have to deal with any more sun or high grass I'm going to lose it."
The other two agree on that statement. While you were buying supplies, you had managed to buy a bag for Karkat to carry some things in order to lighten your and Eridan's carry weight. So now each of you had a fair amount of supplies in each bag, a bed roll and you and Karkat had a tent each.
You glance up at the sky, where the sun indicated that it was around 3 in the afternoon. So the three of you had been walking since around 8, for 7 hours you had been travelling. Which didn't sound like very long, but when it was in the hot sun and through an annoyingly itchy grass it seemed like it dragged on for much longer.
As you walk along, you begin to hum a familiar tune from your childhood, a faint smile on your lips. Memories of your friends and family return to you for the second time this day.
Ignore the cold whispers
Of all of the past
Feel the warmth
Of the ones you love
Take my hand
I'll show you the way
Don't let go
You'll be left behind
The gods of the old
Will lead us home
You stop singing when you remember that you were currently walking with two other people, who could most definitely hear you. You glance over to see that the other two travellers were staring at you.
"Sorry." You apologise, looking down at your feet.
"No, it's fine." Eridan says.
"You actually sound nice." Karkat finishes.
"Thank you?" you reply, not sure he was complementing you or not.
The travelling had not felt any better as you continue. Your feet were sore and you were pretty sure your feet were probably now covered in blisters. You glance over at the other two were sweating from the heat as you were.
"It shouldn't be too long until we reach the bridge," Karkat explains, "then we'll sleep before we take the last stretch of land to the Doom Kingdom."
You sigh in relief, knowing that you were almost out of this dreadfully hot landscape. You look up at the sky once again, where the sun was now much lower than it had been a few hours previously.
"We should probably set up camp soon." You say, looking back down.
"Yeah, well we're almost at the bridge, we can set up camp then." Karkat negotiates.
"Yeah, alright." You sigh.
"Here." Eridan says, handing you a plate of food.
"Thank you." You reply.
You give majority of the meat to Rose before digging in. You were currently sitting comfortably on a fallen tree, alongside Eridan and Karkat. The fire in front of you was keeping you warm from the cold air around you.
You were almost one kingdom closer to your destination. Your hand brushes against the bracelet on your wrist, the white crystal glowing slightly at the contact.
Once you finish eating you quickly clean the utensils with some of the water from your bottle. You then pack them away in the bag before standing up.
"Guys, I'm going to get some sleep." You say and walk towards your tent.
"Okay, goodnight." Eridan replies.
"We'll be leaving before the sun rises." Karkat tells you.
You nod before you hop into the tent. Since you now had two tents, the boys would share a tent and you would have this one to yourself.
"It's nice, isn't it Rose?" you hum as you pull out your brush.
You run it through your tangled and dirty hair. Once your hair was not free, you put away your brush and pull out the one you use to brush Rose's fur.
"Come here." You tell Rose and pat your lap.
She trots over and lies down. You begin to brush her fur, which was still in good condition, but she still loved it being brushed.
"I feel kind of bad," you begin to speak to Rose, "like I'm using them just to get to the Grand High Blood."
'They wouldn't have come along if they thought you were using them,' Rose tries to comfort you, 'Karkat also has his own reason to go."
"But what about Eridan?" you ask.
'I'm not sure,' she sighs, 'but we'll find out eventually I guess.'
Once you finish brushing Rose's fur, you put it away and close your bag up. You hop into your bed roll and snuggle in. Rose lies down beside you, cuddling into the warmth.
'Now I have the whole tent to myself,' you think, 'but now I just feel alone.'
