Chapter 17
Today was no cooler than it was yesterday. The three of you were still trudging through the hot sun, grass that reached your hips brushed against you, making your skin itchy. You could tell the other two were quite irritated as you. Rose, on the other hand, had made herself comfortable on your shoulder. This added to your irritancy.
"You have so easy, don't you." You huff.
'Oh definitely.' You swear you see her smirk.
Your frown only deepens when the grass rises once more.
There was obviously nothing really to talk about, since you had all talked about your background, so what else was there to say? That's when your thoughts began to drift to your own past.
"Hey mama, can we go see Aunt Callie?" you ask, wringing your hands together.
"Of course," your mother smiles, "just take this with you to give to Aunt Callie."
You cheer as you grasp the handle of the basket that your mother had handed to you. You turn around and run off outside.
"We can go!" you call.
Your brother and two sisters call out 'yay!' and all of you run off down the lane. You dodge through the legs of the adults, since you were so small it was easy to avoid being trod on.
You finally reach the house where Aunt Callie lived. Aunt Callie wasn't actually your blood relative, but all of the children in the village called her that as she acted quite like an aunt to them all. It was about a year before you were born that Callie had moved from another Kingdom to this town.
You knock on the door and wait for her to open the door. Your siblings impatiently wait behind you. Eventually the door opens revealing the white haired lady you called your aunt.
"Hi Aunt Callie!" all five of you chime.
"Oh hello." The woman smiles at the sight of you all.
"Mama said to give this to you." You grin and hand to basket to her.
She peeks into the basket, "oh fresh bread, how sweet."
"Would you like to come in for some muffins?" she asks.
"Yes please." You all smile at the mention of muffins.
"Alright, come on in."
"Hey (y/n), are you alright?" a voice interrupts your flashback.
"Oh, yes," you smile half-heartedly, "just remembering something from my past."
"Well, you're crying." Eridan points out.
You frown as you wipe your hands across both of your cheeks; you look at them to see that they were now covered in wet tears.
"I didn't notice." You mumble.
"What were you remembering?" Eridan asks.
"My siblings and I visiting my aunt." You tell him.
There's a short pause between the both of you.
"You must have loved your siblings." Eridan smiles, glancing at you.
"Of course, they were my family," you chuckle, "I loved everyone in that village; it was like one big family."
Eridan hums as he looks forward at the seemingly endless grassy plains.
"I wish I had something like that," Eridan confesses, "my father and brother were always busy, until the day they died."
"Oh geez, I'm sorry to hear that." You say, placing a hand on his shoulder in an attempt to comfort him.
"Either you two kiss or hurry up!" Karkat yells back at you.
You jump back, your hand flying back to your side.
"We're almost at the village." He adds on.
Well, he kind of ruined that moment, whatever that moment was. You reach your hand up and pet Rose. She begins to purr as you continue run your fingers through her soft fur. Your mind had now trailed off once again. Unknown to you, Eridan was looking at your dazed face.
"There's the village." Karkat says, pointing towards the small spot that seemed to get bigger with every step you took.
"Oh thank heavens." You sigh.
Your hand which had been brushing Rose with, was now back at your side.
'Hey, don't stop.' Rose complains, pushing her paw against your cheek and nudging it.
"But my arm is tired," you groan, "I'll brush your fur tonight."
That seemed to please her as she dropped her paw.
As you got closer to the village, you noticed that it was significantly smaller than the last village you had been in. But as long as there were supplies you didn't really care.
Eventually you reach the village, where there were quite a few people walking around the streets. You look up at the signs on each of the stores until you found the general store. The three of your walk in and begin looking around for any supplies you needed. Eridan went to look for preserved food, Karkat went looking for bed rolls and you went to look for a second tent. Your eyes trail along the shelves until they fall onto the tent. You pick it up and look it over. It seemed to be similar to yours, packed small but when it's undone it is much bigger. You nod to yourself and go to look for Eridan, who had all of the money.
"Ah, there you are." You smile as you walk up to the taller male.
"So you found the tent?" Eridan asks.
"Yep, you got the food?" you reply.
"Yes, now let's go find Karkat." Eridan tells you.
You nod and the both of you find Karkat, who had a bed roll in his arms.
"Okay, let's get this paid for and leave."
