Chapter 1
The small town of Skaia in the Hope Kingdom almost never got new people moving in, as they were hidden in the middle of the forest with nothing but a small road that lead into the town. There were only about 60 people that lived in the area, along with a few houses out in secluded areas of the forest, only coming into town to but supplies before disappearing once again. That's why when a cloaked figure wandered into the town, with nothing but a bag on her back, no one thought much of it. People glanced at the figure and then went about their own business. No one noticed the small white cat trotting beside them, her paws a light brown from the dusty ground.
You glance around at all of the buildings as you walk past, only stopping when you come across a bar. You mentally prepare yourself before walking up to the large wooden door and pushing it open. All of the patrons stop talking and turn to look at you when you walk in. Your shiver as you feel several pairs of eyes on you and your nose crinkles at the strong scent of alcohol. You slip off your dark cloak and walk up to the bar, sitting your bag at your feet. The small white cat jumps up onto your lap, laying down for a rest after a long day of travelling.
"Hi, how can I help you?" the lady standing at the bar asks.
"Um, could I have an ale please?" you ask, petting Rose gently.
"Of course." She chimes and walks over to grab a cup.
She fills up the wooden cup and sits it down in front of you, the pale drink drips down the side of the cup, pooling on the bar.
"So, what're you doing around here?" the bar lady asks as she cleans a cup.
"Oh, I've been travelling," you shrug, "Rose and I have been looking for a new home."
The lady at the bar looks slightly surprised, but nods. She sits down the now clean cup and picks up another and continues to clean.
"A home, you say." A voice beside you speaks.
You jump slightly and look beside you, where a man sat. He looked to be a few years older than you, around 26 or 27. He had slicked back blond hair and calm blue eyes.
"Yes," you nod, "the town I lived in didn't appreciate magic, so they kicked me from the town."
"Ah, so you know magic," the man grins, "magic is welcomed here."
You smile, "finding a place that allows magic is always a comfort."
"We have an old home on the outskirts of town you could buy," he explains, "we could work out a price."
You looked at the man, shocked. No one had ever offered you a home so quickly and kindly. Your face then changes to one of confusion, what did he mean by 'we'.
"Oh, I'm sorry," the man smiles apologetically, "I'm Henry, the mayor of this small village."
"(Y/n)." you tell him your name.
"Well (y/n)," Henry smiles, "how about finish off these drinks and then go to my office to work out a price."
You pause for no more than a second before nodding, "sounds like a plan."
After a while you both finish your drinks, you give the lady at the bar, who you learnt was called Lucinda a few silver coins before standing from your seat, Rose had slunk around your neck and sat there comfortably as you pick up your bag and follow the mayor to his office, which was only a few buildings away.
"I'm back Anna," Henry says as he walks past a small front desk, where a woman with dark hair and bright eyes sat, "and I've brought a guest."
"Welcome back sir," Anna smiles, "and hello..."
"(Y/n)." you tell her.
"(Y/n), nice to meet you." The woman smiles welcomingly.
"Nice to meet you too." You say as you continue walking into the mayor's office.
Henry was already sitting at his desk, a few papers in front of him. He gestures for you to take a seat and you oblige. The seat was wooden and sort of uncomfortable, not that you minded, you had sat on much more uncomfortable things.
"So, the house is up for sale for 150 gold." Henry explains.
You cringe slightly; you only had 114 gold and 7 silver left.
"But we can bring it down to 100." Henry smiles when he sees your slightly pained expression change into a happy one.
"Really!" you exclaim happily.
"Yes, of course," Henry smiles, "we're always happy to have more magicians in our village."
"More?" you ask.
"Ah, yes," Henry says airily, "we have a magic alchemist by the name of Eridan."
Your eyes light up when you her 'magic' and 'alchemist' together. You had never met a magic alchemist before.
"Wow, I've never met a magic alchemist!" you exclaim.
"Well I'll have to try and get him to visit you some time." Henry nods.
You smile and nod. You open up your bag, which was sitting beside your feet. You pull out a small satchel; you open it and pour out 100 coins and give them to Henry.
"Well Ms (y/n), you are now a resident of the village of Skaia!" Henry cheered and gave you a key.
"Anna!" he called out and a moment later Anna walks into the office.
"Yes, sir." Anna speaks.
"Could you please take (y/n) to the house on the outskirt of the west of town," Henry says, "I have to go and check in with some things."
Anna nods and gestures for you to follow her. You close put your small satchel back into you bag and shut it, swinging it onto your back. You stand up and follow Anna out of the building. The both of you were quiet, neither of you really having anything to say.
Eventually you both get to a decent sized house. It seemed quite old and a bit run down.
"Well, this is the house," Anna finally speaks up, "if you need anything; feel free to visit the office."
"Thank you." You smile and with that Anna leaves.
You turn back to face the house.
"Well I guess we should get cleaning this place up, huh Rose."
