Chapter 1
It's dark. An endless abyss of night. The only light is coming from the people surrounding her. They all nod at her and everyone looks forward. A feeling of dread flows through all of them, but also determination. This is their last chance to save this world and possibly many others too.
"Are you ready?" One person asks.
The girl in the middle nods and takes a step forward, with everyone following behind her. Lights snuff out one by one until they are in full darkness. An evil presence moves closer to the group and then, she wakes up.
The sound of the alarm blares through the small room. Under a large pile of blankets, a figure stirs awake. With hair tangled up and dark circles beginning to show up, she makes her way to the bathroom to try to make herself look presentable for the day.
After her shower and getting dressed, the girl makes her way to the kitchen to make some breakfast. She tries to cook, but her midlength hair and bangs kept on getting in her face right when she needed to look down. Sighing, she finished making the food, let her plate down, and grabbed a beanie to tuck her hair into the perfect position.
Coming back to her food, she took the plate and turned the television on as she began to eat.
- and another crash has happened on the freeway, just the latest in this bizarre string of accidents. As usual recently, You might want to take a side street to get to work today, as there will be delays. Now, back to you Jim."
"Thank you tom. Recently the crime rate around the world has been rising, including in our own town. More break-ins and robberies are being reported than ever before. We have the local sheriff here today to explain to us how to protect our homes and businesses.
By that time the girl zoned out from the news. Talk about rising crime rates have been covered multiple times over the past month, and the sheriff already gave the same talk at her local college. Nothing on the news caught her interest until she left to clean herplates. Then, on the news, a story about some sort of cosplayers causing trouble in the local park began. It was such a minor one that she barely missed it. It was interesting, to say the least, but not one that would affect her life. At least it was different than the recent doom and gloom stories.
After the news was over, The girl turned off the television, grabbed a backpack that was on the couch, and walked out the door, locking it behind her. The cool autumn air was blowing a strong breeze, but not strong enough for the girl to close her jacket and hide her favorite turtleneck. It was slightly stronger than the day before, and the way before that. In fact, the weather has been a bit off for the time of year. Usually there is only a faint breeze and the trees would just start to change color. Now they are all in reds and oranges and yellows. This is not normal, but no one is complaining.
With hair still slightly wet, the girl walks in a relaxed manner to the college, that is a half hour walk away from her house. She found the walk fairly quiet with few people passing by. The park was louder than the rest, but unlike the news story, there are no strange cosplayers. Just families and pets playing together.
The walk ended when The girl got to the campus. Inside would be the normal classes and the normal stresses, but at least out here she can have one last moment of piece. At least that is what she thought. Running in front of her were a couple of people around her age. All wearing some sort of leather or black clothing or something like that. They all have some sort of what the girl thinks are weapons, but she couldn't be too sure about that. They looked like they were running away from something. Some turned back and held a toy gun, or their hands out, but after a few seconds they would return running with the rest of the group. The breeze grew stronger after the group ran past, as if something large and fast was just behind them. But, she couldn't see anything. So the girl just shrugged it off and tried to regain her composer before classes started.
The classes were the usual boring lectures, but they were important for being able to do more than entry level jobs. Taking notes were important as well, since if the girl didn't take notes she would most likely begin to daydream in class.
The girl finished most of the classes that she had and was walking to her last one when she stopped. The hallway here isn't how it's supposed to be. It looks the same, but it feels off. The ground feels more uneven, and it seems like she is the only one there even though dozens of students take this hall at this time of day. In fact, it seems like most are subconsciously avoiding this hall and are taking a different route to their classes. The only people here are those that she saw before. Those punk emo whatever they are people.
The girl tried to walk past the group. They looked like they were in a conversation and she didn't need to bother them if she could help it. But, one of them noticed her and got the attention of the others. The all began staring at her while whispering among themselves, which was making the girl feel uncomfortable. Then, as she was about to walk past, one of them grabbed her shoulder.
"Hey," The guy stated. "What are you doing here." He spoke in a hushed tone that sounded both urgent and threatening, causing the girl to feel slightly scared.
"I'm, I'm trying to get to class. Is there any reason why I shouldn't be here?"She responded.
The guy pushed her away as he took his hand off of her, causing the girl to stumble back. He spoke again in no softer of a tone, but with less of a threat because of the lessened contact. "Your not supposed to be here. What's your name?"
"I'm Miriam."
Another one from the group began to speak, this time a girl. "Do you have strange blood, see things that aren't there, been attacked by an unknown entity, or have strange visions?
"No, I don't think so." Miriam responded, confused by all of the questions.
The girl that spoke put a finger to her mouth as if she is thinking, and then spoke again. "Have you noticed anything strange lately? It could be anything at all. Some thing that's happened to or around you maybe?"
This time it was Miriam's turn to think SHe could tell them about the rising crime rates and the weather, but they probably already know about that. She could tell them about her dreams, but they are just normal dreams, aren't they? Well, they said anything, and they might not have noticed the weather and the crime rates, so she might just tell them everything.
The group stayed silent as Miriam thought. Some were getting impatient, but most of them were just waiting for her to be ready to share.
"Well, um... The weather has been off. There has been more crime than usual. I've been having more weird dreams than usual. Other than that, not really?"
The girl that spoke took her turn to pause. Miriam was wondering if it was possible to get away from them when she finally spoke again.
"Oh! I forgot, classes are about to start. You should get there. Don't want to be late. But, we would like to talk more with you. Here, This card has our number on it. If you call, at least one of us is sure to pick up."
One of the people, what was in the background till now, held out a business card that had a couple of different phone numbers, but with one what pops out more than the rest. Miriam took the card reluctantly, and placed it in her coat pocket.
Walking away, Miriam knew that she would probably never calls those people, even if there's an emergency and they are the only ones that can help. She knew, because that is the way she is. So, she left the card in her pocket and forgot all about it as she walked down the hall to her final class.
