Old scars

It had been a few days since Elijah had managed to smuggle the note out of his library confinements. He had spent those days sitting at the desk flipping through the books that he had been ordered to read through and writing down notes. The only thing that kept Elijah sane the entire time was when Liliana had secretly worked with Josephine to sneak Dorian into the library to be with Elijah for a few hours.

Elijah had become agitated with how many days he had been locked up, anxiety began clouding his mind as his annual commitment was getting closer and closer yet there was no sign of a reply from his note.

"This is rather a lot of secrecy for a romantic reunion" At hearing that familiar fancifull voice Elijah turned quickly to the source. A familiar blonde haired elf was casually laying on the windowsill, a smirk across his face.

"Always the show-off aren't you Gabriel?"

"We can't all be mages, now can we?" Gabriel swung his legs into the room standing window. "Now, what kind of trouble have you gotten yourself into this time?" Elijah rolled his eyes at this.

"I'm not in trouble" Elijah pouted.

"Uh, huh so there just so happens to be guards outside all the doors for what? Fun?" Crossing his arms a small blush of embarrassment spreading across his face.

"Okay, so I'm in trouble" Gabriel smiled at hearing this.

"Ah, Elijah still getting up to no good? I'm so proud!"

"Look can you get me out? Please?" Gabriel walked to one of the shelves, examining the books.

"Hmmm, why not?" Gabriel turned to face Elijah. The elf walked to the window.

"So what's the plan?" Elijah stood beside Gabriel looking out over the mountains.

Gabriel looked at Elijah and smiled, placing a hand on his shoulder.

"You trust me?" Gabriel asked, without hesitating Elijah nodded.

"Always" Elijah didn't notice as Gabriel turned him so his back was to the window.

"Good" without warning Gabriel moved his hand from Elijah's shoulder to his chest and shoved him.

Elijah screamed as he fell, only stopping as he landed in a large mound of snow. Elijah took a moment to compose himself, and make sure nothing was broken, before sitting up. A moment later Gabriel landed gracefully a few feet away from him, jumping out of the snow and brushing himself off.

He walked over to Elijah, offering him a hand. "You planned that from the start didn't you?" he said as he took Gabriel's hand pulling him up.

"Now all we have to do is get Bruno and we can head off, know where they're keeping him?" At hearing the demon's name Elijah's heart stopped slightly before aching, remembering his best friend's death. Gabriel must have noticed the change in Elijah's demeaner. "What's up?" Elijah grabbed his arm, it almost looked like it hurt Elijah to talk about Bruno.

"Bruno's gone, Gabriel" the elf's eyes widened slightly.

"What happened?"

"There was an attack, he sacrificed himself to make sure I got out alive"

"Oh... Anyway, where are we going?"

Several years prior

Elijah stares up at the blonde haired elf, the dead bodies still strewn around the two rain pouring heavily drenching the both of them. Elijah watches the elf open his mouth but before he could get a word out, the sound of loud thumping approaching. Looking towards the sound Elijah see's Bruno charging towards the downed Qunari, his fists raised above his head ready to bring them down on the elf. Colliding down on the floor Elijah watches, surprised as the elf seemingly disappeared into thin air. Bruno turned back to Elijah and quickly but gently nuzzled him affectionately helping him off the ground. Looking around and without wasting any time Elijah turned to Bruno.

"We should go." Elijah held his head where he was hit and cast a healing spell as the two began quickly walking through the woods. As hours passed by the rain had subsided and the two had come to a stop in a small clearing in the woods. Surveying the area Elijah nodded. "This seems like a safe spot to rest for a few hours" He turned back to Bruno. "Bruno, can you go and check the area to make sure no-one has been following us?" Bruno let out a low growl before walking off into the forest. Elijah let out a small sigh as he sat down on a fallen log as he rubbed his face in exhaustion. The young Qunari couldn't remember how many days it had been since he had a good night's rest. The sound of branches moving above him made him quickly lift up his staff and aim it at the noise. His eyes widened in surprise slightly at the sight of the same blonde haired elf. "It's you, were you following us?!"

"You left before I could get your name!"

"I left because you vanished into thin air"

"I left because a monster the size of a windmill tried to kill me" Elijah waves his hand, brushing the comment away.

"Oh that was just Bruno"

"What's a Bruno?!" The elf asked, exasperated, before Elijah could answer the tree the elf was on began to shake as Bruno returned his hand resting against the tree resting his full force on it.

"That's a Bruno" The elf swiftly makes his way up a few branches.

"You have no idea how little that narrows it down" Elijah stands up still holding his staff up at the elf.

"Now are you going to come down, or am I going to have to get Bruno to shake you out?" After a few seconds of silence the elf responds.

"A fair deal I suppose" The elf quickly makes his way down the tree branches before gently landing on the forest floor.

Gabriel and Elijah had been traveling for over a week traversing over rough terrain and avoiding the sight of any Inquisition agents. If they needed to stop for supplies Elijah would pull his hood over his head, hiding his face. As they continued to travel the two shared stories of their adventure's since they had last seen each other. Gabriel didn't know why or where Elijah needed to get to so desperately all he knew was that Elijah needed assistance in his travels and he would help his friend in any way he could.

The two soon arrived at a small farm land, the main building nothing but a burned down ruin. As Gabriel looked over to Elijah he noticed a sad look on his face as he walked towards the building. In front of the building were two crosses buried into the ground where Elijah stopped in front of looking down. Gabriel had gone into what was left of the house and was looking around when he felt the floor shift underneath his foot.

"What is this?" He asked before pulling the floorboard up. "Well would you look at this." Elijah looked up and saw a very expensive looking bottle of alcohol. His eyes widened at the sight he remembered the night he accidentally saw his adopted dad hiding it under the floorboards and when the dad noticed Elijah he explained it was for a special occasion. Gabriel noticed the new sad look in his friends eyes. "So care to explain why we're here?" Elijah let out a sigh.

"This was my adopted parent's home, this is where they raised me until the Templar's killed them when they protected me." Gabriel's eyes widened slightly before he made his way over to Elijah still holding the bottle before handing it over to him. Elijah took it and ran his thumb over the worn label. "Care for a drink?" As the night began to set the two set up a small campsite in the house and as they drank they shared stories of their youth.

"You mean to tell me you never left this farm?" Gabriel asked, surprised.

"Well, there weren't any other children around who wanted to be friends with the scary thing with horns" This made Gabriel raise an eyebrow at this. "Well what about you? You said you were raised in a Dalish clan, right?" Gabriel nodded his head.

"Yeah, I had one friend in the clan, more than a friend actually she was like a sister to me. But we aren't close anymore"

"How come?" Gabriel shrugged.

"Our personalities just clash. I sometimes just can't stand her anymore" The conversation died down after that Gabriel noticing Elijah's tired eyes took first watch. The next morning after waking up Elijah stood in front of his parent's grave.

"I'll go check around make sure no-one's around" Gabriel said realising Elijah needed a moment by himself. As Gabriel left Elijah let out a sigh and slowly squatted down in front of his adopted parent's grave.

"Hey Ma, Hey Da it's me Elijah"

Since Elijah had met Gabriel they had hit it off and had started travelling together, Bruno at first being apprehensive of the elf travelling with them. As they travelled things started to escalate between the two and one thing led to another and they ended up waking up in the same bed. Elijah was happy to find someone who he cared about and he believed that Gabriel would be thinking the same thing. However, Gabriel was worried at how fond he was getting towards the young Qunari. He had a troubled past he didn't want Elijah to get caught in the middle of. Due to this he ended things between the two and admitted he had to leave. This broke Elijah's heart and seeing the sadness in the Qunari's eyes made Gabriel want to stay but he knew that he had to do this to protect Elijah. However, he made a promise to his closest friend that if he should ever need him he only needed to send him one letter and he would come running.

"I knew I wasn't crazy" The new voice made Elijah quickly stand up and spin around, seeing a young male human. The man was wearing a Templar outfit and was glaring at Elijah with a violent look in his eyes. "Everyone thought I was crazy but I knew you were real!" Elijah raised his eyebrow at the man before raising his eyebrow.

"I'm sorry do I know you?" That question seemed to anger the man even more.

"Know me?! Know me?! You butchered my parents, you monster!" Elijah's eyes widened as a sudden memory hit him of the small child holding the dragon teddy bear looking up fearfully at the demon who stood above his dead parents. "I told the guards about you, but no it must have been the boy's imagination and bandits must have been the cause! I was an orphan because of you!" Elijah held his hands up.

"I'm so sorry, honestly, I was a different person back then. I regret every action I made when I was that person"

"Sorry doesn't bring back my parent's back demon!" The man swiftly drew his sword aiming at Elijah who still held his hands up.

"Please we don't need to do this" but the man didn't seem to want to talk.

"I've waited years for this moment once I've killed you I can show everyone that I wasn't crazy!" The man charged at Elijah, who dodged the blow pulling out his staff and blocking a blow aimed for his head. After a few blind swings the man had managed to catch Elijah a few times leaving a few cuts across his body. Elijah the entire time didn't want to fight the man still feeling bad for hurting him and killing his parents. But eventually he knew there was no talking this man down. After another swing Elijah blasted the man back making him skid across the floor he got back up and charged at Elijah who stepped aside and again blasted him with magic slamming him against a tree. After a few more charging attempts the man was flung back one more time. As he got to his knees he glared up to Elijah who's eyes were ignited with purple flames. "Your....a.....monster....." The man panted out but Elijah just looked down at the man as his hand ignited.

"I know" a blast was released at the man slumped down dead.

"Elijah!" The Qunari snapped his head to the voice seeing a concerned blonde elf. Gabriel, with his bow equipped, ran towards his friend. "What was that all about?!" shaking his head he let out a sigh.

"I'll explain on the way back to Skyhold"
