Why [31]

For a long time, the human girl felt like she was probably going to be haunted by this day. It would forever blacken her dreams with terrible, fearful nightmares, that were likely there to try and swallow her up whole. She couldn't believe how much her life had changed, how she used to be a normal teenage girl; now she was just a teenage girl who was a murderer. However, even though that what she did was wrong, that it was something she should not have done, a pair of skeletal arms were wrapped around her, seeming to hold her in an embrace as she sobbed her heart out. This was strange to her. How all of a sudden, Sans was comforting her as if they had always gotten along, as if he had never hated her for the whole first part of knowing her. He wasn't telling her to shut up, he wasn't making fun of her for being shaken up. No, he was just quiet, allowing her to cry.

Slowly, she pulled away to look at his face - he had a small frown upon his skull, as the two white dots in his eye sockets stared into her bright blue tearful eyes. Frisk could have sworn for almost a moment he looked apologetic, almost like he felt sorry that she had to do such a thing, even though he had been pushing her to get used to firing a gun. "ya alright, kid?

"Um... Could be better..." She tried to joke with a sad smile. She was almost ready to speak again, until she heard the door behind her screech open once more, and in came Grillby and all the others. Chara let out a shocked gasp, seeing the bodies of the people who had tried to attack them.

"What the hell happened in here?!" Chara cried.

"we got ambushed." Sans said. Chara rose an eyebrow towards him, seeing that he was sitting on the ground, with his arms still wrapped around Frisk. A small smirk fell upon her lips.

"Oho~! What is this? Don't you think you're getting a little handsy there, Sans?" She mocked. When Sans instantly got what she meant, he growled and went to move his hands away from around Frisk. She felt saddened at the loss of his embrace, as it had actually been comforting her some since she had been crying. But now his arms that had been around her were gone.

"shut it, it's not like that. she was just shook up, is all." He grumbled. Chara chuckled, not seeming so convinced, but the conversation was interrupted by the two when they heard Grillby gasp as he had taken his attention away from one of the dead bodies, and his eyes had landed on Gaster who had been lying in the cell. He practically raced over, his hands grabbing hold of the bars.

"Gaster!" Grillby called, before looking towards the door of the cell, to see that it had some kind of lock. It wasn't an ordinary key lock though, it was something that required a four digit code, as there were four numbers that needed to be turned to make some kind of code.

"We don't have a code!" Asriel pointed out, when he noticed the combination lock on the gate. However, without even answering him, Grillby seemed to grab hold of the lock and using his fire magic, the lock began to melt to the heat, making it easily come off in one fell swoop. Well, at least that solved that problem.

Once he got it unlocked, Grillby swung open the door, before kneeling down beside Gaster. "Gaster? Can you hear me?" He frowned. He obviously wasn't dead, otherwise he would have been dusted by now, right? Though, he couldn't help but feel fearful when the man wasn't answering him. "Gaster?" He repeated, his voice a tad shaky that he still wouldn't answer. But to his and everyone's shock, the battered up skeleton quietly began to grumble and groan, seeming like he was waking up.

"U-Ugh... W-Who...?" Gaster quietly seethed, weakly opening his two eye sockets, squinting as if the room itself was too bright, even though it was quite the opposite of that, being a dirty, dusty,  dark mess. But then there was the glow that was coming off of Grillby's flames, so that did cause some light to shine into the darkness. "G-Grillby?" Gaster stammered, shocked to see him there. Not to mention when his pupils went to glance around at a low pace, he saw that some of the others were there too, including a human girl he didn't quite recognise. He had likely never seen her before, he thought to himself.

"dad! you're alive!" Sans made his way over as quick as his body would let him, kneeling down beside his dad's figure, seeming so relieved that he was among the living. Gaster spoke a small comment of "Not so loud..." as Sans had probably spoken a little too excitedly, but he couldn't help it. He was just so glad that his dad wasn't dead, that he was actually here. They had actually found him. He wanted to cry tears of joy, but found it hard to do that with all these people around.

"We have to get out of here. People probably heard those gunshots you let off up on the higher floors. It's only a matter of time before the CIA come down here and discover us. And that's something we don't want." Grillby said, earning a small nod from everyone. Grillby went to slowly help the aching Gaster up, wanting to be careful with him, considering he could probably be so delicate with all the possible abuse he had to take. He put Gaster's arm across his shoulders, letting him lean his weight into him. Asriel also went to help, going to take Gaster's other arm and doing the same, so he didn't have to walk all alone.

"What about you, Sans? C-Can you stand?" Frisk questioned towards the skeleton as she had gotten up, offering a hand out to him to help him up off of the floor. Sans rolled his eyes.

"i'm fine, frisk. ya don't have to worry about me." Sans commented, going to pull himself up, but the moment he got up, he stumbled slightly, right into her. Frisk seemed to smile knowingly, knowing Sans had been lying that he could manage it, while he growled. "shut up, ya don't need to look so damn smug.

"You need help walking though, right?" Frisk asked, earning an exhale of annoyance from him.

"...yeah, yeah. fine, whatever." He said, which Frisk didn't mind at all. Like they had done for Gaster, Frisk just allowed Sans to lean on her for support as they walked, seeing as his body was quite weak at the moment from the over usage of magic. "guys, make sure to keep us covered." He said mainly towards the other monsters, and towards Chara who wasn't holding onto anyone to help them walk. They all nodded.

They were making their way to the hatch, where they had to go down the ladder, until Asriel decided to point out they had a bit of a problem. "How is Gaster going to get down?" He wondered. Grillby shook his head, as if he knew the most simple solution in the world.

"Simple. Gaster, do you think you'd be strong enough to wrap your arms around my neck, so I can climb down and you can hold onto me?" He suggested to the injured man who thought for a second, before slowly nodding.

"Yeah... I can manage that." Gaster agreed. Asriel was the one who still supported Gaster as Grillby let go of his other arm for a moment. Grillby turned around, facing his back towards the skeleton, who Asriel helped Gaster put his arms around to help him get down the ladder. "Okay, I think I'll be... Alright." Gaster told him and Grillby nodded.

With that said, Grillby was the first to begin climbing down the ladder, then it was Asriel, the other monsters and then it was Chara following afterwards. Just as Chara reached the bottom of the ladder however, Sans felt alarmed when he could hear the sound of someone's yelling from what sounded like a couple of doors away, and they were on the same room as them. Yelling from a strong sounding female voice. Not just that. He heard a voice that was all too familiar to him.

"WAIT UP, UNDYNE! YOU SHOULD BE MORE CAREFUL! THESE ARE DANGEROUS PEOPLE WE'RE DEALING WITH!" Holy shit, that voice belonged to Papyrus!

"frisk, ya go next. NOW!" Sans demanded, not even giving her a chance to answer. He could manage to go down the ladder himself, but he just needed Frisk to head down, so he could go after her. He couldn't have Papyrus seeing him. Not now. Not here. Not ever - if he could help it. Nodding in panic, Frisk went to climb down the ladder, as quick as she could manage; Sans went to follow.

Just as the door swung open, Sans managed to duck just in time on the ladder, closing the hatch as he did. He gritted his teeth, hating to push his body past what it physically felt like it could endure right now. But he couldn't get found out by his brother. Otherwise Papyrus would question why he lied to him, he would probably be angry. Dammit, with how Gaster was, getting away quickly was going to be too difficult. They'd probably be shot in the back of the head before they even got out of these sewers.

Was he really thinking of risking trying to teleport all of them out of there? His body and soul had gone through enough with just trying to protect them in that cell room. But if they didn't get away now, it was over. All of this was for nothing, and they'd probably all be arrested. He glanced towards Frisk - it was clear she was still full of fear, that she was likely mentally scarred from what she had to do. She practically risked her own mentality just to save his life. Right now, he could return the favour and save hers. Not just her life - once again, but everyone else's.

"everyone, grab each other's hands, now!" Sans shouted. "don't ask any questions, just do it!" He demanded. Seeing how serious he was, everyone did as they were told, going to link hands in slight confusion, wondering what Sans was up to. Just as Sans went to grab hold of Frisk's hand, the hatch was screeching open, and someone was already going to climb down the ladder.

It was Papyrus. And just as Sans was about to teleport away in a blue flash of light, his little brother had seen him.

Pain seized his entire body as he felt his soul crack slightly, just as he teleported them all away, causing them to land right outside, just where the cars were parked, and that single monster that they had left to keep watch was waiting. The moment they arrived, Sans had collapsed to the floor, his body full of agony as he had pushed himself more than he could manage. That was also pretty evident by the fact that his bones were slightly shaking from the pain.

"Sans!" Frisk cried, instantly kneeling down to the floor at his side, going to stare down at him with wide eyes. "What did you do? What's wrong?!"

"heh... i teleported us outta t-there... r-r-remember what i told ya? my s-soul is... kinda already damaged... so i c-can only take usin' so m-much magic..." Sans mumbled, managing a weak, pained smile. "just get gaster into the car... m-make sure he's okay.

"That's what we're doing, Sans!" Chara called, just as she, Asriel and Grillby were trying to help Gaster get into the car. They were all also worried about Sans, but seeing as Frisk was currently focused on him, they felt they needed to focus their attention on Gaster.

"You're going to be okay, right? You'll be okay?" Frisk asked, sounding desperate when she said that. She didn't want anything to happen to Sans. Yeah, he could be the most infuriating person she had ever met. He could be so up his own ass, he could complain and he could be irritating and he could just be so unappreciative... But then there was also many times where he was anything but that. She... She cared about him! She was a friend to him! An important friend! He was the first person she had really come to know when it came to being in the Mafia. He could never die on her!

"eh... i don't know... i k-kinda... cracked my soul a l-little bit more..." He admitted, which caused Frisk to gasp. "h-hey. ya don't need to worry about me, frisk. if anythin' were to happen t-t-to me, ya should be happy... all i ever d-do is give ya a b-b-bad time... i don't see why ya c-care so much.

"Shut up." Frisk growled down at the skeleton, as she began to cry once more. Why? Why did she care so much about him? Hell, whenever he went to save her, or protect her, he never thought that he did it out of his own free will, but rather he did it because he didn't want to anger Toriel. He wanted to believe that was the case. With Frisk, she had no reason to protect him. No one to please. No one to make happy if she kept him alive. So, why did she do it?

Because it made her happy? He still didn't understand. He wasn't a good guy, was he?

"You'll be okay." Frisk repeated, just as the skeleton painfully chuckled again, before slowly closing his eyes. Frisk's eyes widened in horror, as she noticed this, and she wanted Sans to stay awake, to know for sure that he was alright. "Sans, stay with me. Don't do this! Please!" Frisk said to him in a pleading tone.

But everything had gone black.
