Trust Is Scary [22]

"Okay, Sans. I'll help you." Hearing those words come out of Frisk's mouth, Sans smiled widely. It was probably the brightest and most genuine smile Frisk had ever seen on the skeleton's face. Of course he would be happy, this was a possible lead to finding his dad. She wanted nothing more than to help him, if it helped him and it made him happier, she knew she wanted to help him. She just felt awful about having to betray James, but if the Mafia had somehow heard from a reliable source, or did their own research on him, then there was the chance he was someone who was guilty. Yeah, she hadn't known James as long as she had known Sans, and already Sans was someone who she felt was a big deal to her - she cared about him. But then a length of a friendship shouldn't have determined her loyalty, she didn't believe that one bit.

Because to her it didn't even matter that her and Sans hadn't known each other for ages and ages, they knew each other for a decent amount of time, but it's not like they were childhood friends or anything. Frisk just knew that she wanted to make a positive impact on him, that she wanted to gain his respect, and that she wanted to be his friend. He caused her to think about him a lot, she always thought about how he was doing when they weren't with each other; if he was okay. Even if Sans never really thought of her that often, she was always thinking of him.

"Alright, so if I'm helping, what do you want me to do?" Frisk questioned in wonder. They had to come up with some form of a plan if they were going to somehow capture James. Sans stood, crossing his arms thoughtfully.

"well... firstly we're gonna wanna capture him out of the view of everyone else. somehow you've gotta get him alone..." Sans murmured. That might have not been too much of a difficult task, but then if James was smart he might get suspicious if Frisk just suggested to walk down a dark alley way. Maybe... "alright, how is this? ya lead him back here, to your room." Sans said.

"Huh? Why?" Frisk looked at him like he was insane. She wouldn't want James to get the wrong idea. Especially if this task was going to have to be done at night time. Then again, James didn't strike her as that person, but then she was forgetting that his kind personality was likely an act.

"i just said we're goin' to need to get to him when no one's lookin'. and he ain't an idiot, probably. he won't just say yeah to ya sayin': let's go down this alley way so we could get him there. ya just bring him back here, knock him out, i'll be waitin' outside in the car--"

"Wait, you want ME to knock him out?" Frisk asked, sounding fearful of that. Of course she would be frightened. He sighed.

"well, he trusts ya, so he'd let his guard down around ya. i'm a monster, if i was there too he'd probably feel somethin' was up. 'specially considerin' ya already told him i'm not a people person. it would be weird for me to suddenly be hangin' out with the both of ya." He explained.

"B-But..."

"frisk." Sans stepped towards her, placing his hands on her shoulders as he looked at her seriously. "i believe ya can do this, 'k? i KNOW ya can. ya want my respect? then please just prove to me that ya can do this. that i'm not just wastin' my time on askin' ya." Sans spoke, a frown upon his face. "this means so fuckin' damn much to me, i won't lie. and if ya don't do this, it'll just be another damn guy you'll let get away with this whole thing."

Oh yeah, the first guy she had chosen to save that had gotten her into this whole mess... How could she forget? Really, she wasn't capable of the whole Mafia scene. She didn't feel confident to harm another person. The thought horrified her. Causing physical harm to another person... Could she really do that? To someone with such a kind face? The personality was fake, she had to remind herself. But could she really do this?

This was important to Sans though. She could see just how clearly, how badly he wanted this. Right now, he was relying on her to help; if she did, he'd like her more. But then if he told her to jump off a bridge, would she do it? Just because he was someone she felt like she cared about, she didn't want to do as he said whenever he said something just to get him to like her. However, this was the only chance she might get to actually getting closer to knowing Sans more. This could be the only chance to finding Gaster. They might not get another. She agreed to help. She promised.

You have to do this, Frisk, her mind told her. You don't have a choice.

"Fine. I'll do it." Frisk gulped, feeling like saying those words alone left a bad taste in her mouth. Sans, on the other hand, smiled, glad to hear her say that.

"i'm glad. don't look so worried, okay? when ya knock him out, just make sure ya don't kill him. i'm trustin' ya with this, ya know? and if ya fuck it up..." Sans narrowed his eyes, before sighing and shaking his head. He knew in a nutshell he'd lose hope again to being able to get his dad back, and he'd probably lose faith in Frisk. But she was all he had right now. The only one who appeared so damn loyal to him. He could have asked Grillby, but right now the guy had a busy schedule, and Sans could not be bothered to go over everything that was going on. At least Frisk already was briefed on the whole situation with James. So, he had to use her if he could to get to his goal of saving Gaster. "no, ya know what? i don't think you'll fuck it up." Sans said to Frisk's surprise. "i have high hopes for ya. ya can do it, i know ya can." If he kept just crushing her hopes and telling her not to fuck up, it probably would only make her feel more nervous about the whole situation. Maybe, if he just put his absolute... Genuine trust in her... She would be able to do this task.

"Really?" Frisk quietly wondered.

"really, really." Sans agreed with a nod. "oh! also..." Frisk rose an eyebrow as Sans appeared to shove a hand in one of his pants pockets, going to go and grab for something. Gasping in surprise, Frisk was shocked when she saw Sans pull out a phone, holding it out to her. "i got this last night for ya when i thought about askin' for ya help. it'd be easier to contact ya this way.

"You got me a phone?" Frisk murmured, carefully taking it from him, staring down at it in her hands for a moment before she looked towards Sans. She knew he had only got it for her because it was related to work and the whole task at hand. Even so, she was still extremely grateful. "Thank you."

"yeah, yeah. listen, this whole thing will go down at the end of the week. just keep gainin' his trust, and then on the friday, bring him back here. text or call me if anythin' happens, i already put my number on there for ya, as i also put yours on mine." Sans explained. "on friday, just keep him busy, until i text ya, and then do bring him back to this house and take care of him. alright?" He said. Frisk nodded. "thanks, kid." Sans actually went to go and ruffle her hair, which caught her by surprise, but she managed a small smile as he then waved and proceeded to take his leave.

Climbing into the car, Sans couldn't help but exhale at what he'd gotten himself into. Trusting Frisk with such an important task was truthfully terrifying to him. Putting his trust and faith in people was something that scared him, as trust was something that could be so easily broken by people. He'd know. But just for once he had to try and push past that damn fear if it was going to get them back the one everyone so truly missed. If he and Frisk worked together, it'd all go according to plan.

Failure was not an option.
