Trap [29]
"we should almost be there..." Frisk heard Sans say, after many twists and turns later. Really, it felt like they had been walking for quite a while; perhaps it only felt that way because the sewers looked like they were never ending, that it was just an endless maze that they could end up trapped in forever. Hearing those words, it made Frisk feel somewhat relieved that they'd be leaving this disgusting, horrible smelling tunnel, while it also made her feel anxious as all hell, because it meant that soon everything would be happening.
Surprising to Frisk, they all seemed to come to a very large, black metal gate, which went from one side of the sewer wall to the other - there was no way to get under or over it. Well, this seemed problematic. How were they supposed to get through this? It's not like they had some stupid technology like you saw in the Sci-Fi movies, where they shrunk themselves down to small sizes with a ray gun, down to the size of a small insect. So, what now?
"How do we get past this?" Frisk asked, glancing towards the others. With the looks on everyone's faces, it appeared they all knew the answer to this question but her. Walking over to her, Chara grabbed Frisk's shoulders and pulled her back from the gate, which caused a bewildered expression to fall upon her face. What was going on?
"We're going to need to stand back." Chara explained, as everyone but that one monster with the backpack seemed to kneel in front of the gate, taking something out of it. To Frisk's shock, it looked like an explosive device that could be detonated by a button. That was complete madness!
"What?! Are you nuts? What if that causes the place to collapse in on us? Not to mention someone is likely to hear that." Frisk frowned. They'd give away their existence in a moment to the people whose base they were infiltrating. Sans grinned.
"that's what a distraction is for." Sans pointed out. Frisk rose an eyebrow towards him, as he lifted his sleeve close to his mouth and seemed to talk into it. To Frisk surprise, he had a small little microphone attached to it. Perhaps that was to communicate with the person in the car. Which it was. On the other end, the monster in the car had heard him, before deciding to dial a number into a phone he had that could not be traced.
"What? We have a distraction?" Frisk questioned, which caused Chara to exhale with annoyance.
"You see, this is why I said we should have just briefed Frisk on everything, that way she wouldn't be SO confused." Chara pointed out to Sans who rolled his eyes.
"Yeah, basically, what is going to happen is that the monster that we left in the car, who Sans just contacted - he is going to contact the CIA." Asriel explained, which caused Frisk's eyes to widen in shock. Papyrus was part of the CIA! As was that fish monster - Undyne. "He's going to tell them about the base and that there's some kind of threat, and while the CIA go in to sort out the situation upstairs, we let this bomb go off and we make our way in. Simple as that."
It didn't sound very simple. A plan like this must have took some thought. But wasn't Sans worried about Papyrus getting hurt if he was involved in this? These people could be extremely dangerous after all. Frisk would have pointed that out, but then she wasn't sure if everyone else was aware that Sans' brother was in the CIA, and she wasn't really up for spilling his secrets right now. It might cause an argument between the both of them; right now that was something they didn't need.
So, after hearing that plan, they all waited. They waited and they waited, just waiting for that monster that Sans spoke to to contact him back. Years felt like they had passed as they were all becoming impatient, until Sans finally heard "They're here." and that was when the plan was back in action. But first, Sans was just listening to the monster say that they were just getting ready to head into the building. "wait for it... wait for it..." Sans murmured, telling the other monster to wait before letting off the bomb. Out on the street, when the CIA had kicked in the doors of the base shouting "Don't move!" that's when the monster that Sans was talking to said it was time.
"now!" Sans commanded, and in that moment a button was pressed and a huge explosion was let off. Frisk could have sworn the ground slightly shook, as they all coughed and spluttered from the amount of smoke that was let off from the blast. Not to mention some of the brickwork in the ceiling and walls started to fall, causing a big lump of bricks to land on the floor. For a moment, they were getting over the explosion, still coughing messes until someone spoke.
"Is everyone okay?" Grillby questioned, seeming to get "Yes"'s from everyone. Luckily, it didn't seem like anyone was hurt. So far so good.
"let's get a move on." Sans motioned, and they all followed him, climbing over the debris to get to the other side where the gate had once stopped them from bypassing. As expected, they found a ladder attached to the wall, right at the end of this tunnel. It seemed to be leading upwards, to a small hatch that could be opened from the inside. They all glanced at each other, knowing this was likely where they got into the building.
Considering it could be dangerous, it was no surprise that Sans motioned for one of the other monsters to go first. Frisk wasn't really one to appreciate that kind of tactic, risking someone else's health for his own. Then again, he obviously wanted to survive for Gaster. Still, he was a leader. The fact that he didn't mind putting someone else's life in the balance for his own kind of disgusted her. But then this was the Mafia, wasn't it? It's not like morals really mattered very much when you were living a crime filled life like this.
Anyway, doing as he said, the monster was the first to climb up, going to reach his hand up towards the hatch. To Frisk surprise though, Sans was actually the second one to step towards the ladder before he had even opened the hatch. If she was honest, she had expected him to go last. Perhaps he wasn't being as scummy as she thought he would be. He seemed to wait patiently as the monster slowly opened the hatch, and slowly went to peak his head out. For the moment, it appeared clear, and he let everyone know that.
Sans climbed up straight after him, being the second one to arrive up the ladder, before being followed by Chara, Asriel, Frisk - as Grillby had allowed her to go before him and then Grillby and the last few monsters followed. "alright, some of you stay around here, keep an eye on the hatch and make sure our way out doesn't get blocked." Sans said. Surprisingly, this room was completely empty, apart from the fact that it had a few shelves attached to the walls. Perhaps it had been a storage room of some sorts, or something.
"let's move." Sans motioned his hand for them to follow him, as they all nodded, doing just that. Frisk had a really bad feeling now that they were actually inside. Perhaps that was just her nerves making her extremely nervous.
It had to be her nerves.
As they were slowly making their way through the lowest floor of the base, they could all hear the commotion of what was going on up above. They could even hear the sounds of gunfire, and people yelling. To Frisk, that was pretty scary. She couldn't help but notice that Sans seemed pretty quiet for now as well. Was he worried about Papyrus being up there? Being a part of it all? Probably. But with everything going on upstairs, that might have been the reason why down here it was so quiet.
Though, opening another door, the group appeared to be met with a quite narrow hallway, which had a number of doors to go through. Asriel frowned. "Any of these could lead to the cells!" He pointed out. Sans had to admit, it was an issue. And it's not like they brought the map they had gotten with them, and memorising the structure of this building completely had been pretty difficult. Sans knew it just had to be one of the last ones.
"we should split up." Sans suggested. Chara groaned.
"I was hoping you would NOT say that. That's a terrible idea." Chara complained, earning a small nod from Asriel. Sans rolled his eyes with frustration.
"well, that distraction up there isn't goin' to last forever. it's only a matter of time before someone realises we're down here. we gotta cover as much ground as we can. so we HAVE to split up and look in all these rooms." Sans told them. "now, asriel, ya go with chara. grillby, ya go with the others, includin' ya frisk."
"Wait, you're looking by yourself?" Frisk questioned. At his nod, Frisk continued. "No way! Let me go with you!"
"so i can get my head accidentally blown off by a little kid? i don't think so." Sans grumbled. Frisk narrowed her eyes at his "little kid" comment. She wasn't even that much younger than him and he was calling her a little kid?! He could be so damn infuriating sometimes!
"Sans, we're a team! We all came here together for a reason! You don't have to go by yourself, that's why we're here to help. So, I'll go with you while Grillby goes with the others. And I'm not changing my mind!" After all, what if Sans got himself into trouble and he couldn't handle it alone? Frisk wanted to try and help if she could. Growling, Sans thought for a moment, before giving in.
"oh for... fine..." Sans exhaled. "you'll come with me, frisk. just... don't get us into trouble."
"Oh, shut up." Frisk sighed, before they all went to split up, going to check through the different doors. To their discovery, a lot of the rooms appeared to just be storage rooms, nothing more. At least until Sans and Frisk were the ones to arrive upon the last door they were going to open - it was slightly different looking to all the rest. More metallic, and rusted. The two glanced at each other, Frisk seeming more nervous than Sans.
Slowly, Sans pushed on the heavy door to open it after grabbing the handle and it screeched open. The skeleton almost couldn't believe his eyes when he saw that this was in fact the room they had been looking for. The cell room. And on the other side of it was several cells - but one could be seen holding a figure, who was just laying on the floor, his eyes closed. Sans recognised that face anywhere. How could he not recognise the face of his skeletal father? Even if it had a few added features to it - like the cracks in his face since they last saw him. That must have been something those bastards had done to him. He didn't look in very good condition.
"dad!" Sans was the first to rush in, wanting to be at his father's side to help him. Frisk's eyes widened in how quick Sans was suddenly in that room, before she quickly went after him. There might have been a trap or something in here, and it was as if for a second Sans had gone from being a leader in the Mafia, to being the son that missed his father.
"Sans, wait!" Frisk shouted after him, before hearing the door close behind them. Sans' eyes widened, as did Frisk's and the two quickly turned around to see four people suddenly standing there, weapons in their hands.
"Don't move." They ordered.
They had been led into a trap.
