Happy For Others [80]

Not being able to sleep well was just another problem that had to arise for the helpless human, and he woke up the next morning, feeling terribly exhausted. It didn't help that he had to head back up to Grillby's bar through the elevator, as he agreed while he was staying here that he might as well do something. And that was working. He just hoped that if he stayed quiet cleaning glasses behind the bar, no one would point out the dark circles underneath his eyes. Thankfully, Grillby seemed to be too distracted as he was conversing with two familiar faces sitting at the bar. Those two familiar faces being Gaster and Sans. As if it wasn't unnerving enough to be around Sans. Now he had to try extra hard not to make Sans glare at him when he was hiding a secret from him he didn't want him to know about. If the skeleton knew he was helping the fox, Sans might just kill him.

"So, you never told us how your date went with Frisk." Gaster decided to speak up towards his son with a smile, while the younger skeleton simply rolled his eyes at his father. He knew the man just likely wanted to be supportive of his son. But did he really need his dad treating him like he was still a little teenager? Maybe it just felt awkward to be asked that question when he knew what he and Frisk had got up to on the date. It wasn't exactly personal details that he wanted to share, not with that human - Andrew, standing nearby. Part of him thought maybe it would be fun to rub it in his face, the other part of him just thought: "I don't want to tell this guy such personal shit".

"none of your business, dad." Sans murmured in response to Gaster who rose his eyebrows in surprise at the response. With a roll of his eyes, Sans smirked back towards his father. "i mean, the date was great. but i don't always wanna talk about mine and frisk's relationship whenever people ask me about it. i'd rather just see what happens. i got with frisk just because it meant a lot to me, not so i had to share the details with every person i know. ya wouldn't like it if i said somethin' like, i don't know. how goes askin' out your boyfriend grillby?" The smaller skeleton mocked, and the moment he finished that sentence, Grillby suddenly dropped a glass, catching the attention of the three others who were startled from the sound of broken glass.

"Sorry! Sorry, that was me." Grillby apologised, feeling stupid for being such a klutz. In his own bar too. He felt so stupid that even Andrew was looking at him as if he had grown two heads. He had just been surprised by what Sans had said, that he had dropped the glass in shock. Why did Sans even say something like that anyway? It was silly. That was made more evident by Gaster's laugh and the shake of his head.

"Boyfriend? What on Earth are you talking about?" Gaster questioned, while his son just shrugged. Honestly Sans just said it as a way to mock him and Grillby for continuously asking about his and Frisk's relationship. The skeleton and the flame monster were good friends after all, pretty close ones at that. Sans wouldn't exactly be surprised if they were to have a thing between them.

"Y-Yeah... That's silly." Grillby added, just as he finished picking up all of the broken pieces of glass from the floor; then he proceeded to go and throw it away in the trash. The skeleton with the cracks in his face frowned a tad towards his best friend, noticing that all of a sudden he seemed to be acting strange. He had firstly dropped a glass out of the blue, and he suddenly seemed nervous. Was he okay? Even Sans couldn't help but notice the worried glance from his father, and the seemingly anxious flame monster. Welp...

"guess i better be leavin' then. apparently i've made things uncomfortable." He chuckled, and when Grillby tried to tell him that wasn't true, he went on. "no, clearly i have. it's fine, i'll probably just drop by frisk's to say hi anyway. so... laters." Sans waved, getting out of his stool to go and leave, leaving Grillby, Gaster and Andrew by themselves. When outside, the shorter monster couldn't help but smirk to himself. He wasn't exactly blind (unless it came to him being blind towards Frisk's feelings when he had tried to ignore them and his own), but if he didn't know better, he would say that perhaps the man made of flame might have had a little thing for his dad.

After all, when going to save Gaster, Grillby had been seemingly desperate to come along on the mission to get him back. Not to mention he had the expression of utter and upmost relief when it turned out Gaster was still alive. (Obviously Grillby hadn't been the only one). Sans always assumed that perhaps they were only super close best friends. But... Maybe from that reaction from Grillby at what he said suggested he had been incorrect? He didn't really mind if the two were into each other. When his mother passed away when he was little, Gaster had been utterly torn up about it. He was distraught for the longest time. He tried his best to cheer his father up, alongside his tiny little brother Papyrus. However, they could only do so much.

If anyone helped him when he went to work and they were babysat at home, (until they were old enough to be in the house alone), it was likely Grillby. Those two had been friends for years. For years and years. Grillby was an amazing guy. If anything was able to make Gaster happy, if Gaster felt the same about him, it was Grillby.

Sighing, after throwing away the broken pieces of glass, Grillby returned back to his usual spot behind the bar, and couldn't help but feel uncomfortable when he saw the skeleton still giving him a look of wonder and worry. Really? Just because he broke a glass? And was acting a little weird? Okay, perhaps he had a good reason to be concerned. But he didn't want Gaster to worry. "I'm fine. Just a little tired, that's all."

"You don't look very tired. If anything he looks tired." Gaster murmured, glancing towards Andrew who felt on edge when he felt the monster's eyes land on him. Andrew didn't really want to be brought into whatever they were talking about, so after putting another glass he cleaned down, he headed out from behind the bar to pick up some more empty plates from the tables in the hope it would keep him away from their conversation. "So what is really wrong?" Gaster questioned.

"Really, I'm okay." Grillby beamed the most convincing smile he could towards his best friend. Truth be told, it stung a little when Gaster acted so clueless towards what Sans had said. Just because it clearly showed how Gaster saw him, and he was the foolish guy who had began to no longer see Gaster as just his best friend but... Something more. He had actually felt that way towards him for quite a long time. It was... Actually during their teenage years to be more exact that the skeleton had managed to capture his soul. However, the man had appeared to have fallen in love with another skeleton monster - a girl who was later to become Sans' and Papyrus' mother.

When that happened, he just had to accept that he would never be able to be with the person he cared about. Even if he would never stop loving him, he never dared to make a move. Gaster had been happy with her, and even when she passed away, Grillby did not want to take advantage of the situation or his upset friend. That would have been such a terrible idea. And even now, he would never dare to say anything. Because the skeleton was likely straight anyway.

"Hmm..." Gaster stared back at Grillby with that usual poker face of his, so Grillby couldn't even tell if he was convinced or not. He was hoping that he was convinced. He couldn't tell Gaster the truth, ever. Ending up with the person you cared about just wasn't for everyone. He couldn't be lucky like Sans or Frisk had been. "I'm not sure if I believe you. But I won't pester you about it." Gaster simply said, catching him off guard. "But if you change your mind about whatever it is, feel free to let me know." Gaster smiled once more, before getting up from his seat and taking a gulp of the last of his drink. Then like Sans, he also took his leave.

Blinking, Grillby couldn't tell... Did he know something?
