Chapter 18:
*Third POV*
Sans and Frisk were both silent as they drove through the city, each looking out a different window to avoid looking at each other.
The tension in the air wasn't helping anything, and Frisk could hear their soft breathing and almost stopped from how loud she thought it was.
As Sans drove, Frisk thought of how they could possibly find Johnathan.
She already knew that the bar tender was their target, yet she didn't understand how that man could possibly know where one of Cortex's most elite assassins would be.
Even if he did, how would they capture him?
It angered her to look at Sans, who appeared to know exactly what he was doing.
Frisk was supposed to be the one that knows everything.
He shouldn't know more than she did.
Frisk almost laughed at these thoughts and clenched her jaw to keep it down, aware that Sans was right next to her, waiting for her to do something.
However, she was waiting for him to do something, so they both sat in silence with the awkward tension just growing in the air.
Finally, Sans couldn't take the tension anymore, and he said quite loudly, "So ready to interrogate a bar tender, dolly?"
At the sound of his voice, Frisk jumped and looked at him with surprise, a hand at her chest. She let out a sigh of relief and her eyes turned cold with annoyance.
"Gosh Sans, warn me next time you speak."
"To warn ya I've gotta talk kid," He chuckled and looked at her with a smug grin, "And you didn't answer my question."
Frisk growled and thought to herself, 'Will he ever change?'
Yet she didn't say it out loud, and she replies sharply, "Yes, I'm ready. Except we don't even know if he knows anything! How will we even catch Johnathan? What's our plan Sans?"
"Geez dolly don't get all technical with me. Gabriel is one of the greatest information finders on the planet. The only problem is he doesn't like working with teams, everything he does comes with a price."
Sans glanced at Frisk from under his fedora, and she looked out the front window at the other cars ahead of them, mumbling softly, "So your plan is to pay him?"
"No. We're doing this my way kid, and money's got nothing to do with it."
Sans shifted gears and began driving his way around the cars, making his way through traffic with slick speed. Frisk gasped and fell back in her seat, watching him and listening to the cars honking at them.
She decided she didn't need to say much about it so she stayed silent as they drove through the city.
Soon, a large rickety building came into view, the sign broken and flickering, the words reading: "Card's Tables."
Frisk repeated the words, and Sans paid no attention to her as they parked in front of the brick building, other cars around them.
When they got out of the car, Sans shoved the keys into his pocket and began walking to the door, Frisk close behind.
She glanced to her left and could see the Avalon Library only a few blocks away. It sickened her to think of how close a bar was to a library, and she gulped down her disgust and questioned, "How come I never noticed this bar here before..."
Sans shrugged and placed a hand on the metal handle of the door, grinning at her as he replied, "Don't ask me. I'm not you."
When he turned the handle and opened the door, Frisk already hated the place.
Out of the door flowed the smell of cigarettes, liqueur, and something that smelled like burnt rubber. Blaring loud music was sunk in the deep water of laughter and yells, flirtatious words and quiet whispers. Sans seemed to be right at home, and Frisk had to gulp down more disgust as he casually walked in.
"Um... How about I just stay out here..." She gulped again, her throat suddenly feeling dry as she stared at the lights from inside.
Sans grinned at her sick behavior and glanced behind him as he commented, "You can read a lot of books dolly, but you'll never learn something unless you do it." He continued his walk inside, and Frisk felt the blood drain from her face as she thought of following after him.
However, they didn't have much of an option at that point, so she took a deep breath, and walked in behind him.
Once she was inside, she realize she was holding her breath, and she kept it held as she followed Sans, trying desperately to keep her hands to herself, not willing to touch anything.
A few people glanced at her and scoffed, others drinking and winking as she crossed their path.
For once, she felt more comfortable with Sans than anyone else in the room; which is why she walked a bit closer, just behind him.
Sans seemed to know exactly where he was going, and continued leading the way.
They approached a bar counter, the bar tender a tall gruff man with a large scar across his right eye. His grin looked like a snarl, and his yellow teeth rotted with holes and stench.
Frisk cringed.
"Ah! If it isn't Sans the Skeleton!" The bar tender (Frisk assumed was Gabriel) laughed, looking at Sans with a crooked snarl.
Sans smiled and sat on one of the stools as he said, "Heya buddy. Just came to check up on the ole place. How ya holding up?"
"Oh ya know... Living the dream in a darn brick! Haha!" Gabriel's eyes moved to Frisk and he seemed to perk up, raising an eyebrow as he added, "Ooh~! Now who might this be Sans? Another doll?"
Sans chuckled and glanced at Frisk who's lips were tight with rage. "Ya, shes a dolly alright."
Sans grinned more and wrapped an arm around Frisk, but she hit it off sharply with a furious glare, "I am NOT your dolly!"
Gabriel looked to Sans, and Frisk could see something in the skeleton's eyes that she didn't notice before.
Was he nervous?
It didn't seem a likely thing to Frisk, but Sans had that small glint as he quickly said, "Oh we joke on that all the time! Ain't that right, doll?"
His eyes gave her a warning as he put his arm around her again, and as she hesitated she thought of what he could possibly be doing.
The risk of safety was worth taking, so she nodded quickly and snuggled close (although it practically killed her).
"Mhm... I'm a dolly..." She choked out, wishing she was a better actor suddenly.
Gabriel lowered his eyebrow and smiled again, boasting, "Great! If you didn't have her, I would of called dibs! Quite the looker ya got there."
Sans chuckled again and Frisk could feel him relax as he kept his arm around her, replying, "Yeah, I know."
Her face heated up hearing Sans say those words, but she stayed silent, knowing Sans had a plan.
She already put together that he was only protecting her from the creeps in the bar, pretending she was his.
It was actually quite smart, she had decided, and she gave him little credit for her safety.
"Alright," Gabriel continued, washing the counter with a dirty rag, "So what brings you here Sans? Got another case to crack?"
What Sans said next shocked Frisk out of her skin, and she would have slapped him if she wasn't pretending to be his-
"Na. Just here to check up on my old pal," Sans replied with a lazy smile.
Frisk looked at him sharply and exclaimed quite loudly, "I thought we were-"
Sans covered her mouth with his hand and her eyes widened at his audacity to do so.
He finished for her, "Ah we'll get library books some other time dolly! Right now, we're saying hi to ole Gabriel."
Frisk tried to think logically on this, but it wasn't coming out right, and she tried to be patient for what Sans was planning.
Was he really planning anything?
Or was this the reason Asgore wanted her with him?
Gabriel began talking about himself and how the bar was holding up, Sans listening closely.
"Ah, ain't nothing interesting been happening. Girls come and go, men stay here getting wasted, and I'm stuck getting nothing but lousy whiners and chicks." He cleans a glass cup with the same rag, and Frisk narrows her eyes at it, listening as well.
"Aw that's too bad buddy. What are those whiners and chicks whining about?"
"Nothing much... got one man saying he had to clean his mama's basement. I mean we all gotta do that once and a while! Another one said he needed books from the library... something about physiology and-"
Sans cut him off casually and said, "Great, know any by name? If you tell me, I might be able to find them."
Frisk, still curious to what he was planning, kept herself snuggled against him and ignored her quickened heart as she listened.
"Yeah... I think the first one was uh... Carlson? And the second Johnathan."
Frisk jumped up with a gasp, and suddenly realized exactly what Sans was doing.
He was only trying to get the name, and then it was her turn to come in.
"Great," She said sternly, "That's exactly who we're looking for..."
Sans' eyes widen and he stands up too, trying to pull her back as Gabriel growls, snarling.
"Oh really? Hmph. Well I gave you enough information already. What do I get in return? By the looks of it, you ain't got no money on ya! So I'll take my prize another way..."
Frisk realized her mistake a bit too late as Gabriel smiled and reached out for her.
However he didn't get to far because suddenly Sans grabbed his wrist, twisted it back until there was a loud crack and yelp, then he grabbed Gabriel's head and slammed it on the counter, grabbing an empty bottle and shattering it on the bar tenders head.
He was out cold, and all Frisk could do was stare in disbelief at what Sans had done.
The worst part is that when people noticed, they only shrugged and continued what they were doing, not willing to get involved.
Sans grabbed Frisk's wrist roughly and began dragging her out of the bar, his anger clear to see. His grip caused Frisk to flinch, and Sans growled, "Great kid. Now we have to work off only one bit of information."
Frisk looked at him puzzled, and Sans groaned, explaining, "Johnathan was going to a library. That's all we have to work with. Nice going."
At that moment, Frisk thought that she should probably leave Sans to do this thing next time.
After what she saw in the bar, she wasn't willing to cross paths with him again.
