Chapter 1:

*Frisk's POV*

Hugged between my arms and chest were large books and files I needed to return, and already I was a day late.

The books were long, and I had exactly three of them. Each of them were about psychology and the process of the mind, the way it could be helped, or controlled.

Each of them were overdue at the library, and I knew that the librarian would ban me the next time I showed up late with his books.

It was the next time I showed up late.

I felt my stomach sink with the worry of what he could say.

Except when I entered the large library of the city I softened to the empty silence and checked myself from inhaling the musty smell before walking to the librarian's desk.

"All three," I declared as I slammed them down on his desk, my hand on the top one to keep the balance steady.

The old librarian looked up at me with wise eyes, his face a cold scowl and his glasses hanging off the end of his nose with the suspense they might fall off. His wrinkled face wasn't something pleasant to look at, and the sagging skin made me gulp down my disgust.

Jeeves was a good librarian, though he wasn't a kind man.

Instead of letting people off the hook for one day of missing books, he would fine them a lot of money and make sure they pay it the day after, or he sent the cops looking for them. He liked to scowl, and it was his resting face when he worked on his computer or helped check out books.

It was his face then when he was looking up from his work and at the large books I had slammed onto his desk.

I tried to think of something to say, but instead I let the silence build, and the wait push him into speaking.

"Miss... Frisk..." Jeeves creaked in his old tired voice, pushing his glasses back a bit to have them a little more balanced, "This is the last time I warned you to turn your books in on time."

"I understand sir," I said, knowing he enjoyed that title, "But I had only finished my notes when I realized the date and I-"

He stood up and took the books slowly, placing them on a cart next to his desk and grabbing out a slip of paper to write down my fine.

Quickly, I continued, "And I rushed here as soon as possible!"

Jeeves seemed to be ignoring me after he had given me the fines. He took the cart and began walking through the musty library, putting back overdue and on time books.

"Besides," I continued, following him with desperate movements in my arms, "They are large books and psychology is difficult to understand. You couldn't expect me to read these three books and take notes in two weeks!"

"Miss Frisk I did not tell you to take notes or check out three books on psychology. That was your own decision. It was your own fault for turning in those books late," Jeeves pointed out in a grumble as he placed a book on a shelf, still walking and facing away from me.

With my shoulders sinking, I continued to follow him and prayed I could some how convince him to let me keep my library card.

"Yes, I suppose that is true. But sir, I only turned them in one day late and I am sure no one else is waiting to read, 'The Psychology Of Persuasion', so it wouldn't even matter if I-"

"Miss Frisk! I have had enough of your late fees and your babbling mouth! Now I suggest you leave before I call the police," Jeeves shouted as he turned to me, anger crinkling his eyes more then usual.

At shock from his outburst, I hardly knew what to say.

Instead of my mind flicking to emotions, it turned to logic, and I pointed out softly, "Actually, the police couldn't do anything to me considering I gave back the books without any damage and I have the money to pay so I can-"

"I am done, with you borrowing books from my library," He growled in a building voice that seemed to be hanging from a thread, "I want you to leave this instant. And this time, do not, come back."

Though his words stung, I could only blink and take a deep breath before sighing and looking at him with determined eyes.

There was no way I was giving up this library.

This was the only one in the city that could erase my searching records, leaving my book trail and knowledge hidden from those who could abuse it.

I had already asked Jeeves if he could help me on this, and once he agreed I knew I would always be on the edge with him.

At first, I had thought it was worth it.

But now, I am guilty for everything I had ever asked him.

Except it didn't stop there, and I looked him in the crinkled eyes as I requested, "Sir... I understand your anger, but I am willing to negotiate. Something I can do, something I can help with just ask! Please sir, this library is like my home... I need it."

Jeeves studied my honesty for a moment of hesitation, and I thought too hopefully on his actions before he turned away and growled, "I will give you three seconds to state your deal, and it will be final."

Joy seeped into my heart and I had to hold myself back from smiling so I looked as if I was taking this seriously.

Straightening my posture quickly and holding my head high, I stated my deal.

"I only check out one book and bring it back the moment I finish, obeying the dead line. This way, I won't forget or take a long while to read them. And you will have your books twice as fast for others to enjoy and read. That way, there is no long waits."

He was thinking about my offer, and I smiled slightly to myself as I thought of how silly it was of me to come up with this deal now, instead of earlier.

Yet just in case, I slid two fingers into my jean pocket, touching my library  card to make sure that it would stay there.

Finally, Jeeves let out a long grumble and continued on with his cart as he said, "We have an agreement, Miss Frisk, you pay your fines today and we shall start a new. Though I will keep a sharp eye on you."

With his warning noted, I tried not to leap for joy as I handed him the money and we walked our separate ways.

I had won over the old librarian, and I let my smile shine as I investigated the books, searching for something that would keep my mind distracted and occupied.

When I had sat down at a circular wooden table, a book in my hands, I smiled more and let my eyes drift across the words on the page, drinking in every sentence and thought that came into my mind.

That's when I suddenly felt a presence behind me, and my smile fell into a blank gaze as I continued to stare at the page. Even though I was looking over the words, I wasn't reading them, and I had the sudden urge to turn around and face Jeeves, yet I didn't, and I set my open book down and asked, "Can I help you?"

Except instead of Jeeves's raspy voice to answer me, there was an oddly familiar one that replied, "No, well... Not now that is. Perhaps some other time."

Recognizing the voice I whipped around to face a toothy grin and the white bones of Sans.

Sans!

That sick rascal who had gotten me punished so many times in Cortex!

I could never pin my information on him, and The King Of Cortex, (Or so they call him) would order my punishment to be more brutal than the last, all because I could never figure out Sans's plans or weakness.

He was just too unpredictable, and as I saw him behind me in the library after I had only escaped about sixth months ago, I had the sudden urge to deck him in the white skeleton nose.

"You again!" I stated with shock and anger guiding my voice, my mind suddenly reeling with memories of when he tried to get into Cortex and steal away their business plans.

The ones I created.

Though he only chuckled in a response and tipped his fedora to me as he winked and said, "In the flesh. Well- Bones. I'm all bones if you haven't noticed."

Growling at him with complete disgust, I thought of the times I would try and put his information together, try and figure things out about him, yet it would never work because the information would never make sense!

I would study recorded conversations given to me by spies.

I would study photographs given to me by guards who claimed The King Of Cortex ordered me to solve them.

I would study documents and files all on his name because he was the one monster I couldn't figure out!

Yet there was was in front of me, making cringy jokes about skeletons.

Though I didn't work for Cortex anymore, and I remembered my place in putting that all behind me.

I could never go back to that torture, to that abuse.

Instead, I was looking to the future, looking for knowledge I could keep to myself, without any orders or stress.

"If you want this book, then it's too late," I claimed as I twisted back forward in my chair, trying to ignore my interest on his mystery, "I've already checked it out. Come back in one day and it's yours."

"One day?" Sans said with surprise as he walked to the side of me, his perplexed eyes on the book, "That short? Then how come you're always turning in your books late dolly?"

Shocked with the nickname and the question, I acted without thinking and scolded, "Jeeves told you! He wasn't supposed to do that he was supposed to erase my records!"

That's when I realized what I said and my face burned pink and sheepish as Sans chuckled and clarified, "Well, no actually. I overheard your conversation. But thanks for the extra knowledge."

I fought another urge to growl, and I narrowed my eyes in a glare, unsure of what I could say to this fool.

Lucky for me, I didn't need to say anything because he continued, "And as much as I would like to learn about and read-" He paused for a moment and lifted the cover of my book to peek at it, then read it slowly, "-'The Pythagorean theoremand more', I was more interested in the reader than the actual book."

Yanking the book away from him and slamming it shut I stood up and gave him a sarcastic smile with narrowed eyes as I teased, "Well aren't you a charmer? Sorry, but I'm not interested in anything you have to say."

Though it was a lie.

I was very interested in this character, mostly because I truly knew nothing about him, and spending most of my time in Cortex studying him and his younger brother, I had grown used to them as my entire life's work.

Pulling away from that was harder than expected, and I was still struggling with it as I grabbed my black purse and swung it over my shoulder.

"Aw ya ain't?" Sans mused as he walked to my other side, standing in front of me so I couldn't leave so quickly, "Ya used to be. Always interested in what I had to say."

"Not anymore Sans," I grumbled under my breath as I turned the other way to leave, ignoring his flashing grin.

Yet there he was again, blocking my way around the chair with his stupid grin and his infuriating eyes.

Finally I decided to move the chair out further as he asked, "Why's that dolly? Don't have any use for my information?"

Letting out a sharp sigh and standing straight to look Sans in the eye, I claimed, "In case you haven't noticed, I don't work for Cortex anymore, and even though I don't, I still know better than to give you any information."

"What's wrong with giv'n me information? If ya don't work for Cortex anymore then there's no point in hiding it."

"Actually, there is," I argued as I moved away from the chair and table, finally out of his locking stance, "I don't want you to someday use it against me."

Sans continued to follow me, seeming to enjoy the conversation as it is.

I was just waiting for the exchange to end.

"Well I wouldn't need to use it against you if ya did nothing wrong," He said, trying to keep up with my speeding strides as I headed to the door of the library, "Which is why I was curious about why ya gotta hide your library history. Mind sharing that little slip of information?"

With a small growl, I ignored his taunts and continued walking.

Though suddenly he asked, "What's the matter dolly? Do ya like, read romance novels and sick crap like that, and ya don't want anyone knowing? Is that what it is?"

I stopped sharply, and felt my fist clench around the book and the other cling to the strap of my back so I didn't turn around and smack him.

Taking a deep breath to calm myself, I shut my eyes and clenched my jaw before asking, "Why do you want to know anyway?"

Knowing he was probably grinning from getting me to stop, I didn't need to open my eyes and look at him as he said, "Just curious is all. Nothing about it, I promise."

"Your promise is worth nothing," I growled under my breath as I continued walking, knowing that a crime lord could care less about his promises.

"Yeah," Sans said casually, "And apparently your library card is worth nothing too cause I see ya didn't need to use it to check out that book."

I stopped again, and looked down at the book in my hand, then remembered my deal and Jeeves. With an angry sigh I reached for my library card in my pocket, but instead of the stiff card, I felt nothing but the soft fabric of my jeans.

Then I turned to face Sans who was holding it between his two fingers like a playing card. I groaned in annoyance and demanded him to give it back.

"Nope. Not until ya tell me your reasons," He said, flipping the card between his fingers and looking at my picture on the front. "You can smile? Strange. All I see you do is scowl."

I reached forward to yank it back, but he pulled it from my reach just in time, causing me to growl and ask, "Why do you need to know anyway?! The information should be useless to you!"

Once again trying to grab it, I lunged forward but he spun away from me, making me stumble and catch myself quickly.

"If the information is useless, then you shouldn't mind telling me."

After what he said, I realized he was right, and I wondered for a moment why I wouldn't tell him.

Taking another deep breath, I turned to face him again and said, "It's because if Cortex comes looking for me, they will check sources of knowledge, knowing that's probably where I am. If they find my records on the library, they will know just how to find me. Does that answer your question?"

As I said it out loud, I realized it was quite useless telling an Underground member. They were enemies with Cortex, so why would Sans tell them where I am?

Feeling a little more at ease with the situation, I held out my hand and waited for him to give me back my library card.

With a small chuckle, Sans placed the card in my hand and said, "Yes, very. Now I know that Cortex is looking for you."

"And why would that be important?" I asked, keeping my face blank and my heart beat steady, suddenly wondering if I had made the right choice.

"Oh nothing... Just lucky you. Now we know to keep Cortex away from you at all times... We wouldn't want them getting a hold of you, would we doll?"

His words seemed to make sense, and I looked down at the library card in my hand, and at my young smiling face as I realized he had just pledged The Underground's protection for me.

Though I wondered if that was luck or not.

"I suppose you're right..." I mumbled softly as I looked up to face him.

Except when I did, Sans was already walking out the door with his hands stuffed in his pockets, and I could hear Jeeves returning to his desk, which reminded me about the book that was still in my hands.

Still, as I watched Sans finally leave, I continued to wonder if I had made the right choice.
