Chapter 49 (I)
The estate was quiet and dark.
The guards were outside but at a distance so as to not disturb the master and mistress of the house.
The maids had retired to their quarters. The whole estate was deadly silent. Even the sound of the whistling wind could be heard. There weren't any crickets around seeing as the estate was in the middle of an island in the sea.
Slowly, the gentle taping of soft footsteps could be heard as they made their way down the large staircase.
It was darkness all around her and she never thought that the absence of light would ever be so comforting.
So soothing.
So comforting.
She never thought that the darkness could be so inviting.
And what was darkness?
Just the absence of light?
Or rather, the absence of everything that mattered.
But this darkness was nothing compared to the darkness that was inside her mind.
All that lurked in the deep cavernous of her shattered psyche was one single thing now.
Her body was rigid, back stiff, shoulders squared and stride confident as she made her way to the main area of the lounge. Slowly, she entered the kitchen. It was dark and she didn't bother with opening the lights.
With stealthy steps, she proceeded towards the stove. Her eyes roamed around. Opening one of the closest drawers, her lips twitches up when she finally found what she was looking for.
Slowly, she ascended up the stairs and back into her room. One hand carried the object that she got from the kitchen while with the other, she uncapped a spray can that she had found in the bathroom and she stepped into the walk in closet.
Almost immediately, the waft of his powerful cologne lingered to her nostrils when she approached the portion where Shehryaar's clothes were hanging.
All in dark colours.
Black, grey, charcoal, deep royal blue.
Just like his personality. Dark and deep and complex.
Carefully, she touched the material of the suits. They were so soft and rich to the touch: so in opposite contrast to his course and tough personality.
She opened a glass drawer that held all his ties and wrist watches.
When her eyes fell on a silver grey silk tie, all the memories came flooding back to her when she remember how he had bound her with it and taken her like a savage.
"You're real parents didn't even want you."
And it was true. Her real family gave her away just because she was a girl; That was perhaps her first sin.
"Your uncle and aunt whom you've been protecting all this time gave you away to me after a listening to a fucking sob story."
Yes, they got rid of her because she was nothing but a burden to them- a pitiful burden that they had taken in to green their own laps; this was her second wrongdoing.
"Everyone got rid of you."
Yes, they got rid of her because she was troublesome.
Her eyes snapped up and she caught the sight of her reflection in a large gold framed mirror on the wall. slowly, she walked towards it as her eyes remained fixed on the reflection of the woman who was staring back at her with a dazed look in her eyes.
"Because you are unwanted."
She set the objects that she was holding down to the vanity of the mirror and touched her pale face.
"Undesirable,"
Yes, this ugly face is indeed undesirable. she thought to herself as she inspected her features. Her eyes that held so much light and confidence now stared at her with numbing emptiness.
"Not needed by anyone."
Why would anyone need me? I tried my best, I did. But it just wasn't good enough.
She thought as her fingers ran down her cheeks, her nails scratching hard into the delicate skin of her face. But she just didn't care anymore.
She just didn't care!
And that was the end of her calm switch.
The seeds of discord were sown too deep.
The doubt.
The fear.
The dejection.
The anger.
The frustration.
The hurt.
The pain.
Her world shattered and broke.
Her soul forever lost.
SNAP!
Her mental stability collapsed.
And all clarity was gone as pure red hot hatred and anger took its place.
She entered an emotional haze.
"Do you really think that a woman like you has any respect?
Someone who was tainted and stripped of her purity before marriage?"
Yes, I have no respect. No dignity. Nothing. She thought bitterly.
Taking the objects in her hand, she headed towards Shehryaar's side of the closet. Directing all of her emotions towards Shehryaar, she brought the lighter that she was gripping in her left hand and clicked on the button that flicked out a small flame at the end of the nozzle and she directed it towards the glass drawer. And with the spray can, she pushed the spray button down, the pressurised liquid air hitting the flame of the lighter and causing a huge flame to burst as a resultant.
From the drawer, she set fire to the cloths that hung above in neat rows.
The flames grew wildly upon the delicate fabrics of the ties and the suits, expensive wrist watches melted, their own batteries exploding inside, increasing the fire.
She stood at a distance as she saw the flames engulf the objects. She smiled coldly at them.
Unwanted.
"He said that I'm wanted. I'll show him." She said to herself as she headed inside the bedroom and strode towards the bed. All the memories can back of heater had come to pass on this same bed.
"Who'd want a frigid woman like you anyway?"
"I'm frigid am I?" She screamed as she set the bed on fire as well. The white sheets caught the flames so quickly.
"I'll show him that he can't take me for granted. I'll show him.". She hissed venomously.
"Undesirable."
"You said that I'm undesirable?"
Complete and utter disgust filled her. Not even the fire around her could dissipate the aching of her heart or her broken soul.
She felt all her pent up anger and frustration come out.
And all she wanted now was relief and to be rid of each and everything.
"A poor abandoned girl."
His words kept reverberating inside her head.
"No one cares about you."
The suffocation of it was killing her.
"Not me and not even you're fucking family for whom you've been suffering all this time."
Nothing mattered anymore. Nothing.
Not her family.
Not the consequences of her actions.
No one.
Nothing.
All that her mind focused on was the suffocating anger and the emotions that came with it and it caused her to focus solely on herself. What she cared about was herself. And right now all she wanted was to let out everything. And let go.
Stop it Ainnie! Think about the baby that you're carrying! her conscience screamed at her as her mind battled with the various emotions storming inside her head. But his words were stronger as the caught a strong grip of her mind.
"You should be considering yourself lucky that I accepted you and married you."
Get a grip on yourself Ainnie. Her conscience tried to intervene once again but she blocked it out.
The flames had increased so much that the fire alarms were set off and the water sprays on the ceiling began to sprinkle.
But she was wasn't about to stop.
She hadn't even realised that someone was pulling her out to the fire as the smoke and the water began to overcome her surroundings.
